Coaching Staff

Former University of Virginia standout Elaine Jones enters her 10th year as head coach for the UC Davis women’s lacrosse program. While at the helm, she has led the Aggies to five winning seasons – three of which have taken place during and since the university’s transition to NCAA Division I status. Most recently, Jones led the Aggies to a 12-6 record in 2010, marking a 28-point jump in LaxPower’s power ratings and earning that site’s nod as the most improved Division I program in the country.

Under Jones’ guidance, eight Aggies have earned All-America honors and 12 have garnered spots on all-conference teams.

The Baltimore, Md. native immediately made an impact on the UC Davis program upon her arrival in 2002, earning Warrior/Inside Lacrosse Coach of the year honors and guiding the Aggies to a No. 3 final national ranking. A year later, UC Davis posted a 7-1 mark against Division II competition, narrowly missing a berth in the NCAA Championships. Most notably, however, was the Aggies defeated both that year’s national champion (Stonehill) and national runner-up (Longwood) during the regular season.

In the seasons that followed, UC Davis made the transition from NCAA Division II to Division I membership. Although the team was not eligible for NCAA postseason due to the reclassification rules of the time, the Aggies finished second in the final Inside Lacrosse Division II Power Poll in 2004. A year later, UC Davis played its first predominantly Divi-sion I schedule, posting a solid 10-9 record. Jones has deftly guided the program as it competes through an increasingly tough Mountain Pacific Sports Federation field.

Before arriving at Davis, Jones served as head women’s lacrosse club coach and assistant director of compliance at the University of Southern California. In her two-year career at USC, she coached seven Western Women’s Lacrosse League All-Star selections and led the Trojans to their first WWLL playoff berth in five seasons.

Jones also was an assistant coach at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst from 1993 to 1995, and has served on the staffs of numerous camps and clinics on both coasts.

As a player, Jones was a two-time NCAA Division I All-American at UVA, leading the Cavaliers to four straight national postseason appear-ances, including the NCAA title in 1991. She later played four years on the Elite Squad of the U.S. National Team.

Jones earned her B.A. degree in English from Virginia in 1992, then completed her master’s degree in sports management at Massachusetts in 1997. Jones then took a hiatus from coaching to earn her juris doctor from the University of Miami School of Law.

In the spring of 2004, Jones was selected as one of four inductees to the augural class of the Friends School of Baltimore Athletics Hall of Fame.

Former New Hampshire standout and assistant coach Katie Leland joined the UC Davis women’s lacrosse program as the top assistant during the fall of 2010. She previously served in two-year stops at American University and her alma mater of UNH.

Originally from Timonium, Md., Leland enjoyed a record-setting Wildcat career from 2003 to 2006, setting four school records and earning postseason honors every year. After claiming America East All-Rookie honors as a freshman, she posted 60 goals with 30 assists to set a UNH season mark of 90 points. She also ranked eighth nationally in that cat-egory while finishing 15th in goals and 17th in assists. Along the way, Leland led the Wildcats to a school-record 15 wins, garnering IWLCA All-Region and All-America East first-team accolades.

In 2005, Leland struck again, compiling 51 goals and 21 assists to repeat her all-conference nod and earn a spot on the All-Region second team. She also added America East Student-Athlete of the Year acclaim. As a senior, she again led UNH in goals (53), assists (29) and points (82), ranking among the national leaders in each. Leland capped her career by capturing a third All-America East first-team award and making the IWLCA All-America squad.

For her career, Leland set school records with 179 goals and 270 points. She also held the UNH standards in single-game goals (9).

After graduating with a degree in kinesiology (emphasis in sports studies), Leland took a position as an assistant coach at American Uni-versity. She helped guide the Eagles to a share of the Patriot League title in her second season, then returned to Durham to rejoin UNH for the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

Four-year starter Molly Peterson will serve as an undergraduate assistant for the 2011 season. She finished among the Aggie leaders in career caused turnovers (84) and ranked 38th nationally in that category as a senior, averaging 1.65 per contest. She also posted offensive career highs of 20 goals and five assists in 2010.

Peterson, a wildlife, fish & conversation biology major, previously starred at Acalanes High School, garnering team MVP distinction in both lacrosse and basketball.

Powering UpUC Davis was rated as the most improved Division I program from 2009 to 2010 based on the computerized “power rating” at LaxPower.com. The Aggies went from 6-12 against D-I competi-tion two years ago to 10-6 (11-6 overall) in 2010, jumping 28 places to No. 46 (76.75 to 85.44).

Aggie Stadium Home of UC Davis Lacrosse Aggie Stadium, whose primary funding came from students in 1999 with the Facilties And Campus Enhancement Initiative, serves as the home field for both women’s lacrosse and football

Women’s lacrosse had the historic first athletics event on April 1, 2007 in a 17-5 win over Saint Mary’s (shown above right). Foot-ball hosted its opener on September 1 of that fall.

The stadium is a $31 million facility featuring many state-of-the-art amenities including Sportexe all-weather synthetic turf, a mammoth scoreboard and video display, a modern pressbox, locker rooms and concession facilities. Additionally, the Bruce Edwards Club Room provides space for special events and recep-tions, both during games and in the offseason.

On May 30, 2008, the facility reached a new milestone when 180 metal halide lights, affixed to four steel poles, flickered on for the first time. In its current design, Aggie Stadium seats 10,743, com-bining both the fixed seating and end zone berms.

Kelly AlbinNCAA Woman of the Year • NCAA Today‘s Top VIII

On October 31, 2004, three-time All-American Kelly Albin was selected as the 14th recipient of the annual NCAA Woman of the Year award, becoming the third UC Davis student-athlete to capture the prestigious honor. She joins Aggie track & field standouts Jamila Demby (1999) and Tanisha Silas (2002).

Then on December 14, less than two weeks after ESPN2 aired the NCAA Woman of the Year ceremony, Albin completed a rare exacta by being named as a recipient of the NCAA’s Today’s Top VIII Award.

Both awards recognize student-athletes for their outstanding achievements in athletics, academics and community service. The Today’s Top VIII Award originated in 1973 as the Today’s Top V Award, then later became the Today’s Top VI Award in 1986. In 1995, the honor expanded to eight recipients. Past Top VIII honorees include five Heisman Trophy (football) and four Naismith Award (basketball) winners.

Albin is the seventh student-athlete to win both the NCAA Woman of the Year and the Today’s Top VIII Award.

Besides an impressive list of scholastic and community achieve-ments, Albin finished her career as one of the Aggie lacrosse program’s all-time greats. She earned a total of six All-America awards, including “consensus” first-team accolades as a senior in 2004.
