Ua Ao Hawai‘iWords by Larry Kimura Chant melody by Kalena Silva

Kau e ka wena o ke ao i ka laniThe announcement of dawn appears as a glowing streak upon the heavens,

He wekeweke i ka pö pilipukaIt is a narrow opening in the darkness heralding the day,

He ‘elele o ka poniponi hikinaIt is a messenger of purple glimmer from the east.

Kau ke kähe‘a wana‘ao i ka ‘äla‘apapaStreaks of red stain long cloud formations,

La‘i ana i luna o ke kükulu o ka lani läReposing serenely upon the pillars holding up the heavens;

‘O ka‘u ia e huli alo nei i ka ulu ëI turn to gaze upon this, focusing on growth and the rising of a new day,

‘Ae, ua ao ë.Yes, day has arrived.

Hö mai lä kö mälamalamaBestow upon us your radiant light

I ka honua nei i ka mauli olaHere upon the earth, filled with the spirit of life.

Ua ao Hawai‘i ke ‘ölino neiHawai‘i is in the brightness of day, it shines, brilliant

Mai ka pi‘ina a ka welona a ka läFrom its boundaries from the east to the west.

Kähiko ‘ia i ka ‘ike manomanoIt wears as its finery a myriad of knowledge,

Ka ‘ike köli‘u mai o kikilo maiOf deep insight from the depths of antiquity.

‘O ka‘u nö ia ‘o ka pülamaMy sole duty is to embrace and to cherish,

A pa‘a ma ka ipu o ka ‘ike ë.So it may be firm in the repositories of enlightenment.

‘Ae, ua ao ë.Yes, day has arrived.

He mele no Hawai‘i ua ao.This is a poem for Hawai‘i which has seen the light of day.

A Message from the Student Association President

Kelson T. Ho‘omano Pakele President University of Hawai‘i at Hilo Student Association

Hana mao ‘ole ka ua o Hilo.“Endlessly pours the rain of Hilo.”

We, the students of UH Hilo, are the heart and soul of our campus. We look forward

to the sunny skies while we are instead welcomed with the rainy days of Hilo. It never

weighs down our spirit; we welcome the rain that falls gently upon our faces because we

understand that the campus is held together by our spirit and fortitude.

We have flown through hurricane winds and battled thunder and lightning. Throughout the

struggles of our journey the rain continues to pour and we continue to presevere. We have

accomplished so much through soul and spirit at UH Hilo. No matter what the forecast of

our futures may be, our rain will never let up. Our rain will never die.

The Star-Spangled BannerPoem by Francis Scott Key Music by John Stafford Smith

Oh, say, can you see by the dawn’s early light

What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?

Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,

O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?

And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.

Oh, say, does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Hawai‘i Pono‘iMusic by Henri Berger Lyrics by David Kaläkaua

Hawai‘i pono‘ï Hawai‘i’s very own,

Nänä i kou mö‘ï Look to your sovereign lord,

Ka lani ali‘i Your chief that is heaven-born,

Ke ali‘i. Who is your king.

Hui:

Makua lani ë Protector heaven-sent,

Kamehameha ë Kamehameha great,

Na käua e pale To vanquish every foe

Me ka ihe. With conquering spear.

Hawai‘i pono‘ï People of Hawai‘i’s land,

Nänä i nä ali‘i Look to your native chiefs,

Nä pua muli kou Your sole surviving lords,

Nä pöki‘i. The nation’s pride.

Hawai‘i pono‘ï People of Hawaiian stock,

E ka lähui ë My nation ever dear,

‘O käu hana nui With loins begirt for work

E ui ë. Strive with your might.

English Translation by Kauanoe Kamanä, Kalena Silva,

Kenith Simmons, William H. Wilson

Lehua blossom flames leap high above Hilo,

Hilo, proud bearer of the torch of wisdom, light for all to share.

I shall always cherish the Kanilehua rain;

Hilo, lush with vegetation, a lei reaching to the highest peaks.

Chorus:

Rise up, O Hilo, wear proudly the mantle of enlightenment;

Let us stand united in purpose, mind and heart.

Academic RegaliaThe academic costume worn by faculty during commencement comes from an old tradition dating from the Middle Ages. At that time all students were clerics. Academic regalia was worn to keep students warm as well as to identify the religious order to which the student belonged.

In America, academic costumes were established based on the intercollegiate code of 1895. Each aspect of the costume, such as gown color, mortarboard tassel, and sleeve shape, indicate something about the wearer and the highest degree received.

Most gowns are black, but some schools use brightly colored gowns. The color of the tassel indicates the highest degree earned by the wearer; a doctor’s cap frequently bears a tassel of gold. Sleeves that are pointed are worn by holders of a bachelor’s degree, oblong sleeves by holders of master’s degrees, and bell‐shaped sleeves indicate the wearer holds a doctorate or specialist degree. The doctor is distinguished by the three bars that adorn the sleeves of the gown.

The brightly colored hoods are the outstanding feature of the academic costume. They represent both the field of study and the university from which the degree was earned, as represented by the colors of both the border and the lining.

Here at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo, we also continue the tradition of marching in academic regalia. Indeed, the colorful procession of faculty is marked by distinctive caps and gowns from universities worldwide. Similarly, the color of the tassel worn by today’s graduation candidates reflect their major.
