WEEK 13 NEWS AND NOTESLAST TIME OUT Southern claimed Stump Mitchell’s first signature win by upsetting Alabama State’s hope of a return trip to the SWAC Championship with a 26-23 road win Nov. 12. Led by QB J.P. Douglas, the Jaguars raced to an early 19-7 lead, but needed a 10-play, 73 yard TD drive to hold on. Meanwhile, Grambling enters 38th Bayou Classic having won five straight, including a 29-25 win over Texas Southern.

SOUTHERN U. vS. GRAMBLING ST. SERIES HISTORy Southern and Grambling meet for the 69th time overall on Saturday with the series tied at 29. Grambling, however, holds a 19-18 series lead in the Bayou Classic which began in 1974 with a 21-0 Tiger win led by current coach Doug Williams. Southern is looking to snap Grambling’s 3-win streak. The Jaguars last in win in the Bayou Classic came in 2007 with a 22-13 win. The most consecutive wins in the series stands at nine by Grambling from 1970-78, but Southern’s own 8-game streak from 1993-2000 includes Pete Rich-ardson’s perfect 5-0 mark against legendary Grambling coach Eddie Robinson. For his career, Williams is 1-5 against Southern.

WHAT 2 WATCH 4 True freshman QB J.P. Douglas has emerged as the Jaguar’s go-to-guy in the clutch. De-spite being 1-2 as a starter, Douglas has embraced his role as the Jaguars closer leading the team two wins in four appearances. Douglas first win as a starter came in the form of a 30-14 homecoming win against Alcorn State. Despite passing for over 200 yards three times in 2011, he has yet to throw for 300 yards.

SMOKE REACHES 1000 yARD MARK Southern WR Smoke Evans surpassed the 1,000 receiving yard mark after posting 12 yards in the Jaguars’ 22-21 loss to UAPB. The Mansfield, La. native has 1,196 career receiving yards, puncuating a career that began with 2 catches for 31 yards in 2008 but has exploded every season since. This year, Evans leads the Jaguars in receptions (42), yards (670), TDs (6) with a 72.4 yards per game average. Evans will be playing in his final Bayou Classic where he is 1-3 against Grambling.

SWAC’S POW TIMES FOUR True freshman J.P. Douglas became the four Jaguar this year to earn Player of the Week honors. The SWAC dubbed Douglas the conferences Newcomer of the Week after pass-ing for 192 yards and two TDs in the Jaguars 30-14 homecoming win over Alcorn State. THE STUMP MITCHELL FILE

Stump Mitchell Head CoachSouthern University Jaguars2nd season

Lyvonia “Stump” Mitchell returns for his second campaign as head football coach at Southern University.

Offering more than 20 years of NFL experience, Mitchell has made crafting eager young people into productive, civic-minded men his top priority as leader of the Jaguar program. His commitment to the academic success of the student-athletes under his watch has been evident since the day he accepted the position of head coach.

In Mitchell’s 2010 debut, he led the Jaguars to a 37-27 comeback win over Delaware State in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge in Orlando, Fla. The Jaguars finished with a 2-9 record in Mitchell’s inaugural season.

Prior to his arrival on “The Bluff,” Mitchell served as the running backs coach on the Washington Redskins’ coaching staff in 2008 and 2009, adding a fresh perspective to the Redskins’ talented group of running backs. He arrived at Redskins Park from the Seattle Seahawks, where he had spent the previous nine seasons coaching the running backs.

In each of his first seven seasons in Seattle, Mitchell, a member coached a 1,000-yard rusher (Ricky Watters for two years, Shaun Alexander for five years).

Mitchell joined the Seahawks following three years as head coach at Morgan State University. He originally joined the MSU staff in 1995 as offensive coordinator, earning a promotion to head coach the following year. Under Mitchell’s tutelage, the Bears boasted a strong rushing attack that averaged 148.9 yards per game in 1997.

Mitchell’s coaching career began in 1991,

when he served as an assistant coach on the World League of American Football’s San Antonio Riders’ staff. He then accepted a position as the head coach at Casa Grande (Ariz.) High School (1991-94), where he led the team to a playoff berth in his second year.

Mitchell played nine years in the NFL as a standout running back with the St. Louis/Phoenix Cardinals. He was a ninth-round draft choice by the Cardinals in 1981 and would go on to become one of the great running backs and kick returners in Cardinals history.

Mitchell is the Cardinals’ all-time leader in combined yardage with 11,988 yards and ranks second with 4,649 yards rushing on 986 attempts and 32 touchdowns. His 177 kickoff returns for 4,007 yards are both franchise records. He posted 14 100-yard games and finished with a 4.7-yard rushing average, second-best in the franchise history.

During his collegiate days at the Citadel, Mitchell was the Southern Conference Player of the Year in 1980 and rushed for 1,647 yards in a single season. Mitchell earned third team Associated Press All-American honors his senior year. He holds many of the school’s rushing records today including the record as Citadel’s all-time leading rusher with 4,062 yards.

Mitchell is one of only six former Bulldog football players who have their jersey retired at The Citadel.

Mitchell was honored with the Chuck Drulis Award for community service in 1982 and the Byron “Whizzer” White Humanitarian Award for charity work in 1984. He was born on March 15, 1959, in Kingsland, Ga.
