SOFTBALL • COACH MIKE RAPPL

Mike Rappl enters his 32nd season as the Golden Griffins’ head softball coach, making him the senior-most member of the Canisius College athletic department staff. In his time at the helm of the program, the seven-time MAAC Coach of the Year has compiled an overall record of 751-420-2 to go with a 298-88 career mark in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. Under Rappl’s direction, the Griffs have earned 13 MAAC regular season crowns, 12 MAAC

Tournament championships and 11 trips to the NCAA Division I Softball Tournament, with the program’s most recent national postseason appearance coming at the end of the 2009 season. In November 2009, it was announced that Rappl will be first active head coach in Canisius College history to be inducted into the school’s Sports Hall of Fame when the Class of 2009 was officially enshrined Jan. 24, 2010. Rappl is one of 26 active Division I head coaches to reach the 700-career win milestone, an honor he picked up March 21, 2009 when the Griffs defeated Idaho State by a score of 6-0. He is the first coach in the MAAC to reach the 700-career win plateau, and he has led his program to the MAAC Softball Championship Tournament a total of 20 times in the last 21 years, with the team advancing to the championship game 17 times. The 2010 edition of the Canisius softball program earned a share of the MAAC regular season championship after the Blue and Gold went 34-19 overall and 13-3 in league play. The Griffs earned the No. 1 seed in the 2010 MAAC Softball Championships, which the program hosted in Buffalo, before falling to Iona in the championship game - the program’s fourth-straight trip to the conference’s championship round. Seven Griffs were named All-MAAC after the 2010 season, and Michelle Fridey left the program as an

all-regional honoree for her play on the field and as an Academic All-American for her work in the classroom. In 2009, the Griffs advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third-straight year after beating long-time rival Niagara 10-0 in the MAAC Championship game. On the national postseason stage, the Griffs played in the Columbus, Ohio Regional, where the team faced the host Ohio State Buckeyes and the Kentucy Wildcats. By claiming the 2009 MAAC championships, the Canisius softball program earned its 11th NCAA Tournament berth in the last 16 years, which stands as the most for any program at Canisius College. The 2008 edition of the Canisius softball program set single-season school records with 39 overall wins and 15 regular season conference victories.

SOFTBALL • COACH MIKE RAPPL

At the Hofstra Regional in Hempstead, N.Y., Rappl helped lead the Blue and Gold to a 3-2 win over Long Island, the school’s fifth national postseason victory and first since 2000. Rappl holds the distinction of being the only softball coach in MAAC history to claim a win in the NCAA Tournament on his all-time record. Rappl became the first softball coach in the history of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference to reach the 600-career win mark, a feat he accomplished March 3, 2006, when the Griffs beat Memphis 2-0. The softball team posted a 28-23 record in 2006 en route to the program’s 10th MAAC regular season title and 16th appearance in the MAAC Tournament. Under Rappl’s direction, the Griffs recorded 14 straight 20-win seasons from 1989-2002, eight 30-win seasons and 22 consecutive winning campaigns from 1981-2002. Rappl’s 751 career wins ranks him in the top-30 among active Division I softball coaches and his .640 winning percentage ranks in the top-20 among active Division I coaches. In his time as head coach, Rappl’s student-athletes have received numerous national, regional and league accolades as well. Since 1980, 11 players have earned national recognition for their play on the field and work in the classroom, 13 have received regional honors and 50 players have been honored as All-MAAC selections. Of those 50 all-league honorees, five have been named the MAAC’s Player of the Year, five have been named the conference’s Pitcher of the Year and two players have been recognized as the MAAC Rookie of the Year. Additionally, 12 Griffs have been recognized as the MAAC Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. After the 2007-08 academic year, former player Katie Miranto was recognized as the MAAC Female Student-Athlete of the Year, making her the first Canisius student-athlete to receive the conference’s highest individual honor. Since joining the MAAC, Canisius is the only team in conference history to come out of the loser’s bracket to claim the league’s title, having won three games on the final day of the tournament in 2002, 2004 and 2005. On the national stage, Canisius has played the No. 1 ranked team three times, meeting Arizona in Tuscon, Ariz., 1994, UCLA in Los Angeles in 2000 and Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich., in 2005. In 1994, the veteran skipper coached Canisius to an overall mark of 36-8 record and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Canisius lost to top-ranked Arizona in the first game before coming back to drop Rutgers in an elimination contest. The Blue and Gold saw their season come to an end after falling to Texas A&M. Rappl’s 1993 squad set a then-NCAA record by winning 35-straight games, en route to a 36-3 record and the best single-season winning percentage (.923) in school history. From 1986-93, Rappl coached the Canisius women’s basketball team to a 93-94 (.497) record and served as the World University Games Venue chair for women’s basketball in 1993. Additionally, the Buffalo native coached the Western Region softball team to gold medals at the 1997, 1998 and 2002 Empire State Games and silver medals in 1995, 1996, 2000 and 2003 with a bronze medal in 2001. He also served on the National Fast Pitch Coaches Association/USA Today Poll for the 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2005 seasons. Rappl previously served as associate athletic director for facility operations at Canisius. He is an active clinician and softball speaker and served three years (1995-97) on the NCAA Northeast Region Softball Ranking Committee. In the summer of 2005, he was honored by his high school alma mater, as he was inducted into the St. Mary’s High School Athletic Hall of Fame and in November 2007, he was inducted into the Western New York Softball Hall of Fame. A native of Lancaster, N.Y., Rappl earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Canisius in 1977 and a master’s degree in 1980.

COACHING STAFF • SOFTBALL

Long-time high school coach Pete Scott is in his sixth season as an assistant coach on Mike Rappl’s staff. Scott coached softball at nearby Depew High School for a total of 26 years, with 17 of those seasons as the school’s head coach. For the 2010 season, he will work directly with the team’s outfielders, while also assisting with the development of the Golden Griffins’ team bunting and slapping offense.

A life-long resident of western New York, Scott received his bachelor’s degree from Canisius in 1972, and then earned his master’s degree at the College in 1975. He retired from teaching English at Depew High School in June 2005 after 33 years of service. In addition to teaching and coaching, Scott also served as the Student Senate Activity Advisor at Depew for 25

years.

Scott helped lead the Wildcats to five sectional titles and nine divisional crowns, and was twice named the Section VI Coach of the Year. He served as the ECIC Softball Chairman for 13 years and the Section VI Softball chair for 12 years. In 2005, Scott was honored for his work to promote the game by being inducted into the Western New York Softball Hall of Fame.

Scott and his wife of 36 years, Joan, have three children and four grandchildren.

Kim Griffin is entering her fourth season as an assistant coach on Mike Rappl’s coaching staff. The 2007 graduate of Mercyhurst College is no stranger to Western New York, having earned four varsity letters as a softball player at nearby Cleveland Hill High School. This season, she’ll work directly with the team’s catchers while also serving as the Blue and Gold’s first base coach. She joined the Canisius staff before the 2008 season as a volunteer assistant coach and helped guide the Golden Griffins to a school-record 39 wins and an NCAA Tournament appearance.

Griffin assists with the day-to-day operations of the program, including recruiting, scheduling, practice planning and on-field instruction. She also helps coach Rappl plan and supervise various camps and clinics throughout the year.

Griffin closed out her collegiate playing career at Mercyhurst having played in 130 career games. As a senior, she hit .264 with three homer and 18 RBIs, while ranking third on the team in on-base percentage (.346), fourth in runs batted in and fifth in total bases (46).

She also served as on of the Lakers’ pitchers, starting 16 games in 2007 where she posted a 6-8 record with a save and a 3.52 ERA.

A three-time GLIAC All-Academic Team honoree, Griffin was also honored as a 2006 All-GLIAC Honorable Mention award winner after she hit .322 with six doubles and 22 runs batted in.

Mary Ann Hopkins returns for her second season on Mike Rappl’s coaching staff, where she works with the team’s pitching staff. In her first year back with the program in 2010, she was able to help guide Canisius pitchers Caroline Main and Amanda Baun to all-conference honors, while the Griffs’ staff led the MAAC in strikeouts and posted the lowest team ERA in the conference. A member of the Western New York Softball Hall of Fame, Hopkins previously served as a volunteer pitching coach with the Golden Griffins in the early 1990s and was on the staff when the 1993 team set the then-NCAA record for consecutive wins with 35-straight victories.

Hokins is a grad of Medaille College where she earned a degree in elementary education. She taught at St. Joseph’s in Buffalo for 30 years. “Hoppy” has served a volunteer pitching instructor at Canisius softball camps and clinics for more than 20 years and has coached many outstanding high school pitchers in Western New York. During her playing days, she was a stand-out pitcher for the North Tonawanda Shamrocks, where she played for Canisius Athletic Hall of Fame member Larry O’Connor.

AdministrationJohnJ.HurleyPresident

John J. Hurley was appointed the 24th president of Canisius College on Monday, October 19, 2009 by the college’s Board of Trustees and assumed the position on July 1, 2010. He is the first lay president in Canisius College’s 140-year history.

A 1978 alumnus of Canisius College, Hurley has served as executive vice president of Canisius College since 2007 and vice president for college relations since 1997. In these roles, Hurley is the designated senior administrative official, re-sponsible for the college’s strategic planning, integrated marketing, legal and compliance issues and athletics marketing. He also oversees the college’s advancement operation, which includes development, public relations, creative and Web services, alumni relations and government relations.

Hurley currently directs all phases of the college’s current campaign, A Legacy of Leadership, which has a $90 million goal. He also led the college to the successful conclusion of its Imagine Canisius fund-raising campaign (1997 – 2000), which surpassed its $30 million goal by $8.8 million. The Imagine Canisius capital campaign was the most successful fund-raising effort undertaken by Canisius College and was recognized in 2001 as the top fund-raising accomplishment among the nation’s 28 Jesuit colleges and universities.

Hurley played a significant leadership role in the college’s $142 million capital investment in the campus, and negotiated the college’s acquisition of the Health-Now building on Main Street. Plans are underway to convert the building into a comprehensive state-of-the-art interdisciplinary science center at Canisius. Hurley is the architect of the college’s innovative Employer Assisted Housing program, which offers incentives to Canisius employees who purchase homes in neighborhoods surrounding the college. He also led the branding initiative that developed the college’s positioning statement Canisius College: Where Leaders are Made.

A native of Buffalo, Hurley graduated from St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute in Kenmore and earned a bachelor of arts degree, summa cum laude, in English and history from Canisius College. He was awarded a full scholarship to the University of Notre Dame School of Law, where he earned a juris doctor degree in 1981.

Prior to Canisius, Hurley practiced law for 16 years, including 13 years at the Buffalo firm of Phillips, Lytle, Hitchcock, Blaine & Huber. He concentrated his practice in the areas of secured lending, bankruptcy and insolvency, creditors’ rights and acquisitions of troubled companies.

Hurley was appointed by Bishop Edward U. Kmiec to serve on the Fidelis Care New York Board of Directors, a health maintenance organization that serves the poor in New York State. He is also chair the Bishop’s Council on the Laity for Bishop Kmiec. Hurley is a past member of the city of Buffalo’s Charter Revision Commission and past president of the St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute Board of Trustees.

He is the recipient of the 2002 Canisius College Distinguished Alumnus Award, which recognizes alumni who have distinguished themselves in their chosen careers. Hurley is also a recipient of the college’s LaSalle Medal (1996), the highest honor conferred upon an alumna/us for service to alma mater, and was inducted into the Signum Fidei Society of St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute (1998).

Hurley is the son of Doris Y. and the late Paul B. Hurley. He is married to Maureen O’Connell Hurley, executive vice president and chief administrative officer of Rich Products Corporation in Buffalo. They have three children: Caroline, Brian and Millie.

Dr.EllenConleyVicePresidentforStudentAffairs

Ellen O. Conley, PhD, a member of the Canisius Community since 1970, was named vice president for student affairs in 1998. One of her many accomplishments in her role as vice president includes spearheading the upgrade of the athletics program at the college.

Dr. Conley earned a bachelor’s degree from Slippery Rock State College (1967), advanced education degrees from the University of Pittsburgh (1968) and Buffalo State (1973) and a doctorate in higher education from the University at Buffalo (1981).

During her tenure as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Conley supported the formation of the School of Education and Human Services, developed a mentoring program for new faculty, initiated the development of majors in criminal justice and environmental science and guided the initiative to implement a Master of Science in Organizational Communication and Development. She also established the Fine Arts Department and facilitated the development of MusiCanisius, which has since evolved into the ArtsCanisius program.

While acting dean, she coordinated the promotion of the school’s graduate education program to the Canadian market and guided the implementation of the Master in Sport Administration.

From 1987-89, Dr. Conley was the assistant director of athletics for women’s sports and financial aid, and from 1987-90, she was the athletic scholarship coordi-nator. Under her direction, the women’s athletic program was formed and grew from one club level team to seven varsity teams. In addition, she implemented and monitored an athletic scholarship program for men’s and women’s non-revenue producing sports.

From 1982-1990 Dr. Conley served as chair of the undergraduate Physical Education Major Program and Coordinator of the Physical Education Graduate Pro-gram. In 1989, she developed alternative curricular tracks for physical education majors to enhance enrollment, and in 1986, she co-wrote the New York State Professional Preparation Council’s position paper for “Strengthening Teaching in New York State.”
