Park University head softball coach Amy Reif enters her sixth season with the program and her squad will embark on its second season in the American Midwest Conference in 2011. Last season, Park went 7-9 in the conference and tied for seventh-place. This season, of course the Pirates would like to improve on that mark and Reif says with this year’s squad that is some-thing they can definitely accomplish. “We were very inconsistent last season in conference play, we split a lot of two game series with our AMC opponents, for instance we would lose a one run game in the first meeting with a team and then spread them the next. “So we have seen what it takes to be successful in our conference. We have seen all of the teams at least twice now and we know what the travel is like, so this season we will make the right adjustments and I believe our team is ready to make the next step in the conference.” Reif led Park to its first ever NAIA National Championship Tournament in 2009 and is Park’s all-time winningest coach at 110-99. Park features four players on this year’s squad who helped Reif lead the Pirates to the national Tournament. Those four players are junior pitcher Justine Riner, junior short stop Jennifer Cordell, senior catcher Emily Calder and outfielder Brittany Dortch. Those four returners will be key in Park’s success this season, Riner was a first-team AMC All-Conference perfomer last season with her team leading 13 wins and stellar ERA of 1.94. Cordell joined Riner on the first-team all-conference team last year with her team leading batting average of .406 and RBI’s with 36. Emily Calder has played in 123 games in her career and started all 40 games for Park at catcher last season. Dortch has apperared in 30 games in her career for Park and will see playing time in the outfield for Reif this season. This year’s squad also features plenty of returners from the 2010 campaign. Sophomore Mal-lory Jansen will return for Park after starting all 40 games for the Pirates in left field. The speedy left handed batter went 12-for-12 in stolen base attempts last season and scored 17 runs. Also returning for Park is sophomore pitcher Megan Walker. Walker was second on the team in wins with seven a year ago and pitched a perfect game in Park’s 9-0 win over Stephens College on Mar. 17. Walker will join Riner and freshman Kaily Purtle on the pitching staff this Spring. Purtle is a right hander pitcher from Smithville, Mo., and played for four seasons at Smithville High School for current Park assistant coach Steve Tingler. Park’s infield will be full of returners, as Brittany Hess returns to Park for her senior season. Hess started all 40 games for the Pirates at third base last season and was the third leading hitter, batting .325 on the year with two home runs and 22 RBI’s. She will again look for time at third base. Joining Hess in the infield will be Jenn Tanno and Lisa Fitzmaurice, both Tanno and Fitz-maurice split time at first base last season and Reif says Tanno could play a little at second base this season. Tanno started all 40 games for Park last season at first base and as the designated player, Fitz-maurice did the same and played in 27 games with 21 starts. Tanno was featured as the big bat in the middle of the lineup, leading the team in home runs with seven and was second on the team in RBI’s with 30. Her .310 batting average was good for fourth on the team in 2010. Fitzmaurice had a .968 fielding percentage at first base last year and drove in 10 batters at the plate. Freshman Brooke Clubine could also fight for playing time at second base this season. Clu-bine had a stellar playing career at Winnetonka High School and was a four-time all-conference player for the Griffins. Calder will start behind the plate at catcher again for the Pirates in her season, but she has some help this season as junior transfer Lacy Blevins comes to Park after transfering from Cowder Community College. Blevins will give Calder a break from catching from time-to-time and Reif says Calder may play some right field like she did her freshman season. In the outfield, Park will have a plethora of newcomers including Jessica Glenn who comes to Park after a stellar two-year career at Hutchinson Community College. Glenn will look to fill the center field spot after being named a junior college all-american at Hutchinson. Joining her will be transfer Kalla Jones, who comes to Park from a two year stint at Seminole State College in Seminole, Okla. Freshman Jacqueline Ramirez will also look for playing time in the outfield this season and returning sophomore Hannah Alpers will do the same. Alpers appeared in 18 games for Park last season and scored five runs on the base paths. Sophomore Kyla Tatum also joins the crowded outfield for her second season at Park. Tatum started all 40 games for Park last season in right field and hit .292 on the year and hit one home run on the year with 25 RBI’s. “I’ve been really impressed with the way our newcomers and returners have worked with each other in the offseason and we are fortunate enough to have many options in our lineup this season all over the field. Each position will have some depth to it and we are anxious to see how we play once we hit the field.”

Jenn Cordell led Park with a .406 batting average last season and will look to do the same this season as the team’s projected starting short stop.

Freshman Kaily Purtle joins Justine Riner and Megan Walker this season on the pitching staff and will also see time in the infield for head coach Amy Reif and assistant coach Steve Tingler.

the winningest head coach in the history of the softball program at Park University, Amy Reif has accumulated an overall record of 110-99 in five years for the Pirates.

In 2010, Park finished the year 24-16 and 7-9 in the American Midwest Conference, which was good for seventh-place in the conference standings. Reif helped lead four of her players to the 2010 AMC All-Conference team and three of her student-athletes were named to the 2010 Academic All-Conference team. Coach Reif led the 2009 softball squad to its first NAIA National Tournament in the history of the program and a 27-13 record, which was the most wins by a Park team in the Reif era. Reif ’s Pirates had a season for the ages in 2009, winning the MCAC Tournament Championship for the first time and posted a winning percentage of .675. The Pirates also fared well in the NAIA Softball National Championship going 1-2, by defeating Hastings College, 6-1, while only losing, 2-0, to eventual National Champion, California Baptist and narrowly lost to Friends University, 6-5. The 2008 MCAC Coach of the Year led the Pirates to one of their most successful seasons, guiding the Pirates to a 10-2 confer-ence record and a 23-23 overall mark in ‘08. Park earned its first MCAC Regular Season championship in its history and came within one game of qualifying for the NAIA National Tournament. In the 2007 season, Reif led the Pirate softball team to an overall record of 18-28 and finished 7-7 in the MCAC. Park con-cluded its 2007 season appearing in post-season action in the MCAC Tournament. This was the second time in school history that the softball team participated in the tournament. Despite suffering early elimination in the tournament, Reif produced eight players who received conference recognition. One player earned All-MCAC first-team honors, four players earned second-team honors and three players were honorable mention. Two players were named NAIA Scholar-Athletes for their work in the classroom. Reif came to Park with more than seven years of experience as a player and assistant coach at NCAA Division I Auburn Uni-versity. She served as a full-time assistant coach at Auburn for three and a half seasons, including the 2002 campaign when she was a member of the NCAA South Region Coaching Staff of the Year. In 2002, Auburn qualified for the school’s first NCAA Regional with a 37-28 overall record and a 15-15 mark in the Southeast-ern Conference. During Reif ’s tenure at AU as a full-time assistant from 2000-04 and one season as a graduate assistant from1999-2000, the Tigers reached the 30-win plateau on three occasions. As a player, Reif spent three seasons as an infielder at Auburn for head coach Tina Deese (1996-99) and still ranks among the school’s career leaders in sacrifice hits (2nd, 28) and games started (10th, 173). As a junior, she was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll for her efforts in the classroom. A native of Kansas City, Kan., she started her playing career at Johnson County (Kan.) Community College in 1994, where she played one season, earning first-team all-conference honors. Reif, who worked at ESPN as a production assistant before coming to Park, received her bachelor’s degree in communications from Auburn in 1998, before obtaining her master’s degree in communications from AU in 2000. Amy and her husband, Derek, who played baseball at Auburn from 1997-2000, have two sons, Storm and Cash.

Emily Calder has started 80 straight games for Park behind the plate at catcher. In 2010, Calder drove in 28 batters and committed only three errors on the field.

Jenn Tanno slammed seven home runs last season, a team high, and drove in 30 RBI’s. Tanno will split time at desig-nated player, first base and second base this season.

Park began the 2010 season red hot winning its first five games, by •sweeping Haskell and Baker in two game sets and split with Missouri Valley. Then swept York College after the loss to Mo Val. Park then traveled down to Mobile, Ala. to take part in a five games against some of the stiffest competition in the country. The Pirates began the Spring Break trip by defeating No. 18 ranked University of Mobile, 5-4. Then Park took on No. 10 ranked St. Gregory’s losing to the Cavaliers, 8-2. They followed that up with a 3-2 victory over No. 30 ranked Belhaven University and dropped the final two games of the trip, 9-3 to Thomas University and 8-1, to No. 22 ranked Auburn University Montgomery.Park then embarked on their first season in the American Midwest •Conference under head coach Amy Reif. The Pirates swept Stephens College to open up conference play, 4-0 and 9-0. And in that second game, freshman Megan Walker pitched a perfect game. Then Park split a tough two game series with AMC perennial power Columbia College and swept rival William Jewell at home to bring their overall record to 14-5.Park then hit the road again for a two game set with KCAC oppo-•nent Ottawa University. Justine Riner picked up her seventh win of the season in the 12-0 win over the Braves in game one and Megan Walker improved her record to a perfect 5-0 in game two, as Park defeated Ottawa, 5-0. Then the meat of their conference schedule was up next for Park.William Woods came to the Park Softball Complex on March 30 and •split with Park, something that would happen to the Pirates in con-ference play many times in the next few week’s. Park then traveled to Walnut Ridge, Ark., to take on AMC foe Williams Baptist. Park’s bats went quite in Arkansas and Park was swept by the Eagles, 5-0 and 12-2. After another successful non-conference series with Rockhurst on April 8, Park traveled to Missouri Baptist on April 12 and split with the Spartans, losing 5-1 and winning 2-1. Then Harris-Stowe traveled to Park and split with Park.

Park did have many athletes receive awards in the 2010 postseason, •as Jennfier Cordell, Justine Riner and Mandi Dennis were named to the 2010 AMC First-Team All-Conference and Megan Walker was named to the AMC Honorable Mention All-Conference team. Emily Calder was named a 2010 NAIA-Daktronics Scholar-Athlete and was a member of the AMC Academic All-Conference team. Justine Riner and Jennifer Cordell joined her on that list as well.

With the conference season quickly coming to an end and Park hold-•ing ground in the middle of the conference standings, Park had a big AMC series with McKendree coming up. The Bearcats split with Park losing to the Pirates, 5-1 in game one and rebounded by defeat-ing Park, 7-4 in game two. The Pirates then traveled to Hannibal-LaGrange in the final AMC series of the regular season and laid an egg by losing to Hannibal twice, 3-2 and 6-5. Park finished the regu-lar season, 7-9 in the AMC and were the No. 7 seed in the AMC Tournament and had to travel to Walnut Ridge, Ark., for a second time to face No. 2 Williams Baptist. The Pirates played with much intensity in game one, defeating the •Eagles, 2-0, with a brilliant pitching performance by Justine Riner, who picked up her 13 win of the year. In game two, both teams couldn’t get the bats rolling and WBC won, 2-1, forcing a third game to decide the AMC Quarterfinal series. In a thrilling game that went nine innings, Williams Baptist prevailed, 7-6, and ended Park’s sea-son with a record of 24-16.

Park University

Park University calls Parkville, Mo., and the Greater Kansas City Area home, offering students the features of both small-town life and the flashing lights of the big city.

With a population of just more than 4,000, Parkville allows stu-dents the small-town lifestyle and tightly knit community often times associated with small college athletics and the NAIA. Originally a trading post on the Missouri River, Parkville grew as Kansas City boomed in the late 1800s, which included the founding of Park University. Both the University and the city get their names from Col. George S. Park, who played a key role in the early develop-ment of the area. Today, Parkville’s historic downtown district coupled with new shopping areas to the north and east gives Park University students two great entertainment opportunities within the area. Parkville sits within the Northland of the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area, which encompasses 15 counties, nine of which are in Missouri and six across the state line in Kansas. The Northland is locally referred to as “north of the river”. Contained wholly within Missouri, it encompasses portions of Clay County including the northern half of Kansas City, Mo., and the cit-ies of Parkville, Liberty, North Kansas City and Gladstone. As a whole, the Kansas City Metropolitan Area is situated at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers, often referred to as Kaw Point, straddling the state border between Missouri and Kansas. The Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area, anchored by Kansas City, Mo., is the 27th largest in the United States, with an estimated population just shy of 2 million.

A tradition-rich city known for its barbecue and storied sports history, Kansas City is currently home to Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals, the Kansas City Chiefs of the Na-tional Football League, Major League Soccer’s Kansas City Wiz-ards and the Kansas Speedway, which hosts several NASCAR and IRL events throughout the year including one Sprint Cup Series event in the fall. Kansas City is also home to the Kansas City T-Bones inde-pendent league baseball franchise and the Kansas City Explorers of World Team Tennis. The Sprint Center and the Power & Light District in the downtown area is one of the region’s top entertainment areas. The Sprint Center also houses the College Basketball Ex-perience, which includes the College Basketball Hall of Fame. A few blocks away sits Municipal Auditorium, home to the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. Additionally, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athlet-ics moved its offices downtown in the summer of 2007. Kansas City is also known for its historic shopping dis-tricts, including Westport and the Country Club Plaza, which is one of the world’s largest outdoor shopping areas designed for motor-vehicle traffic. Commonly referred to as “The Plaza,” it is home to one of the nation’s largest holiday light displays between Thanksgiving and January. In the Northland, Zona Rosa has become a popular shop-ping district, while Town Center and The Legends at Village West keep shoppers occupied in the Sunflower State.

English was honored at the national tournament with the Charles A. Krigel Award for outstanding sportsmanship, while his team was awarded the Dr. James Naismith-Emil S. Liston Sportsmanship Award for the team recognized as most sportsmanlike at the tourney. After a stellar collegiate playing career for Christian College in Dallas, Texas, and the Univer-sity of Rhode Island, English was selected in the NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers where he played the 1970-71 season. Right to Know/NAIA

The purpose of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is to promote the education and development of stu-dents through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member institutions, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and to the principle that participation in athletics serves as an integral part of the total educational process. The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recognizes the importance of the individuality of each member institution, the value of the conferences and Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) structure, and the benefits of membership in a national association. The NAIA supports gender equity. Gender equity is an atmosphere and reality where fair distribution of overall athletic opportu-nity and resources, proportionate to enrollment, are available to women and men, and where no student-athlete, coach or athletics admin-istrator is discriminated against in any way in the athletics program. That is to say, an athletics program is gender-equitable when the men’s sports program would be pleased to accept as its own the overall participation opportunities and resources currently allocated to the women’s sports program and vice versa. The NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes participating at nearly 300 member colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 25 conferences and the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.), the NAIA offers 23 championships in 13 sports. Since 1937, the NAIA has continued a long tradition of pushing the envelope and making a positive difference in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Character program is the latest cutting-edge addition to the NAIA’s proud history of in-novation. Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator are committed to the true spirit of competition through the five core values: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
