Kazbek Tambi enters his fifth season at the helm of the women’s soccer program after being named head coach in January of 2007. Tambi, who served as the assistant men’s soccer coach for nine seasons prior to being named to his current position, is just the second head coach of the programs 14-year history.

Tambi brings a wide range of soccer experience to the women’s program. He was the Head Coach for the U16 Women’s National Team from 2005-09, guiding them to several domestic and international competitions. Further, has also coached in the New Jersey Olympic Development Program, and served as the head coach for several prominent club teams, such as the Arsenal World Class Women’s Team, which developed several national team players, including Yael Averbuch, a Herman Trophy Finalist (top honor in collegiate soccer), and the ACC player of the Year. In addition, he has served as the head coach of the New Jersey Stallions women’s team in the USL W-League. Tambi holds a USSF “A” License, the highest level in the country.

In February of 2008, Tambi coached the Unites States National Under-17 women’s soccer team to a 3-0 record. Along the way, Tambi’s team defeated Australia, host nation New Zealand, and Germany en route to winning the Future Stars Tournament Championship. Following that victory, the same squad led by Tambi won the CONCACAF Championship in July of 2008 to earn a berth into the 2008 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

On the heels of the CONCACAF Championship, Tambi led his team back into New Zealand in November of 2008 where the U-17 Women’s

Christina Reuter comes to South Orange after serving one season as an assistant coach for the women’s soccer program at Rutgers-Newark.

Reuter, the 2007 America East Goalkeeper of the Year, was a two-year starter and a four-time letterwinner for the Terriers who made three consecutive NCAA Division I Championship Tournament appearances (2005-2007). Boston University won American East championships in 2005 and 2007 with Reuter as the starter in goal after a shoulder injury erased all but three matches of her junior season. She recorded 13 career shutouts.

The Dumont, N.J., resident played on Terrier squads which compiled an overall mark of 51-22-12 while notching an impressive 24-5-4 record in American East play. She currently is tied for third in career saves (147) and ranks fourth in career goals against average (0.77) in the Terrier record book. Her 0.60 goals against average in 2005 is the fourth lowest mark in BU history. Her 14 saves against Stony Brook in 2007 ties the second highest single match total in school history.

Reuter earned First-Team All-Conference honors as a senior by recording five shutouts in 15 matches with a 0.66 goals against average. She allowed two goals in a game to Stanford in the season opener and to Wake Forest in the NCAA Tournament while holding the opponents to a goal or less in the other 13 matches. As a sophomore, Reuter highlighted a personal 8-2-3 record between the pipes by posting five shutouts - including a 1-0 overtime over Connecticut in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. She never allowed more the one goal in any of her 14 appearances.

The Madison, Wisconsin, native currently serves as a youth coach for the Arsenal World Class program.

She earned her Bachelor of Arts in psychology with a minor in business administration from Boston University in 2008 and then helped F.C. Slovacko in the Czech Republic to a second place finish in the nation’s top women’s professional league.

Head coach Kazbek Tambi saw his team take a step in a positive direction last season, but he is far from satisfied. The 2010 season saw the Pirates win seven

games, including three in BIG EAST conference play, a total that eclipsed their combined output from the previous two seasons.Entering his fourthseason at the helm, team identity has been at the core of his off-season message. Tambi is looking establishing the Seton Hall women’s soccer program as competitors on both a BIG EAST conference and national stage and believes that his team has the mentality to become a perennial threat on both levels.

“This year we have placed an emphasis on playing an improved, excellent brand of soccer,” said Tambi. “We are looking to take steps towards challenging for a league championship and turning Seton Hall women’s soccer into a national power. Our kids have shown that they understand the hard work that needs to be done and that with commitment, these goals can become a reality.”

The 2011 season sees the Pirates welcome to new faces to the coaching staff that are no strangers to success. Rick Stainton and Christina Reuter have been tabbed as new assistant coaches, bringing a wealth of high level experience to the fold. Aviv Volnerman also returns to the bench for the Pirates, entering his second campaign as a volunteer assistant coach.

Stainton comes to Seton Hall on the heels of a stint with Sky Blue FC of WPS during which time he was responsible for a wide range of team activities. Stainton served as an assistant/goalkeeper coach in addition to being charged with the responsibility of developing training programs, identifying prospects and coordinating camp instruction.

“I believe Rick’s experience at the professional level the last few years will be a tremendous asset to our program,” Tambi said.“In the professional world he’s been exposed to the latest in tactical, technical and physical training. We hope he can impart some of that knowledge onto our group and that the

implementation of these techniques will give us a competitive edge.”

Reuter joins the Pirates following one season as an assistant coach for the women’s soccer program at Rutgers-Newark. A four year letter winner at Boston University, Reuter started two years in goal for the Terriers, winning the 2007 America East Goalkeeper of the Year award. In a distinguished career, Reuter was a part of three NCAA tournament appearances, and ranks third all-time in school history in saves and fourth in career goals against average.

“Christina was a very high level collegiate player,” stated Tambi.“She has proven that she knows what it takes to get to the top. I think that her first-hand experience will be a vital part of establishing the championship atmosphere and mentality that we are looking to develop.”

Aviv Volnerman brings a familiarity with the program to his second season as a part of the Pirates staff.

“All three are extremely dedicated and have a passion for the game,” noted Tambi. “Already in a short time… I think they have had a tremendously positive impact on our group.”

The Pirates will once again face a schedule filled with challenges. The non-conference portion includes home dates withFordham, Lehigh and Princeton which alternate with road tests at Monmouth and Iona. Sandwiched in the middle is a West Point Tournament engagement that includes hosts Army and Colgate.

The schedule also features five home games against BIG EAST opponents Georgetown, Syracuse, St. John’s, Notre Dame, and DePaul. The Pirates will take to the road for six contests against conference foes Villanova, West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Louisville and Rutgers.

“The BIG EAST is routinely one of the most difficult conferences in the country,” stated Tambi. “Our players came here knowing they would be facing top level competition and I think they relish the opportunity to go out and compete with the best game after game.”

Between the pipes, Tambi and the Pirates welcome back two of the most distinguished goalkeepers in program history. The combined experience ofElizabeth Bond and Jennifer Pettigrew will serve as an asset as the team looks to build on a defensive effort that yielded just over one goal per game last season.

Junior tri-captain Jennifer Pettigrew enters her third season having already etched her name on a number of the Pirates’ career record lists. Sitting fifth in school history in both saves and goals against average, Pettigrew looks to follow up a solid 2010 season in which she started 16 games and posted a 1.28 goals against average in over 1,400 minutes for the Pirates, earning her All-BIG EAST Third Team recognition.

Red-shirt senior Elizabeth Bond enters her fourth year of action for the Pirates. In three years, Bond has climbed to fourth on the school’s career shutout list and ranks sixth all-time in saves. Her career 1.30 goals against average is tied for second best in program history. In 2010, Bond appeared in three games and did not concede a goal, also earning her eighth career win in the process. She will be leaned on to provide depth in goal as well as act as one of the team’s tri-captains.

“We’ve got two very experienced goalkeepers who are both very talented and extremely dedicated to the team and the game of soccer,” said Tambi.“Their work ethic, confidence and their ability to direct from the back will be instrumental in our team’s

success this season.”

The Pirates return a stout backline that includes a number of players with extensive experience. Experience at the back is a fundamental part of Coach Tambi’s vision for his team this season.

“The fact that we brought back a number of players who got a lot of on field experience last year is key,” noted Tambi. “We are really excited to field a squad with a number of players that have BIG EAST level experience. This group is battle tested and should play with a confidence that yields an improved level of organization and communication, ultimately elevating our play as a team.”

Senior captain Ashley Beamish and junior Cristina Barthel have combined for 75 career appearances while sophomore Meghan Hayes was a starter in all 18 games during her first season with the program. Junior Taylor Mims also brings over 30 games of experience in her first two seasons with the team to the rotation.

Vying for time at the back will be a pair of freshmen defenders Mikayla Hickey and Kristina Meier.

The Hall also brings back a veteran midfield, however, with a new season comes new responsibilities. The loss of senior Nicki Gross, who long served as an engine for the Pirates machine, births new opportunities for a number of players returning to Seton Hall’s midline.

“Losing Nicki was a big loss for our team but my hope is that all the players that played with her learned a little bit about the passion and dedication it takes to be successful at this level,” Tambi said. “We bring back a number of girls who were a big part of what we did last season and I think our kids are excited about the opportunity to embrace new roles and show how much they have improved.”

Senior Taylor Wilson looks to bounce back from a 2010 season

that was shortened by injuryin which she still managed to tally two assists, tied for the third highest total on the team. Wilson will be joined in the midfield by a strong sophomore core that includes Brittney Albrecht, Ashley Clarke, Marie Klemme, and Aime Ruhe. As freshmen, the four combined for 66 appearances, five goals including two game winners and six assists.

“We had a great group of freshmen last year who to their credit pushed themselves to the limit last year,” noted Tambi. “They played a big role in a number of battles with top teams and gained invaluable experience that will only help them moving forward. Over the spring, they worked extremely hard to improve themselves based on what they learned last season and I think they are all primed to take major steps not only in their individual game but in their contribution to our team as we look towards the new season.”

Solidifying the midfield will be senior Caitlyn Milazzo and junior Rebecca Warrington, as well as newcomers Rachel Friedman and Alyssa Stipcak.

Beamish, Barthel, Kosch, and Mims will also occasionally assume midfield roles, as will freshman Angie Shehaj.

The 2011 edition of the Pirates will feature the dynamic 1-2 combination of red-shirt junior Stephanie Soma and sophomore sensation Katie Ritter.

Soma enters the season with three goals and three assists to her credit over her first two years of action after missing her freshman season with an injury. Her running mate Ritter looks to build on an impressive freshman campaign in which she led the team in points, netting seven goals and adding one assist. Her exploits earned her a spot on the BIG EAST All-Rookie team and her seven goals tied for the most goals by a freshman in school history and are tied for the seventh highest single season tally overall.

Soma and Ritter will team primarily with senior Wiebke Balcke who has tallied six points in her career up top in what coach Tambi hopes will be an improved attack.

“Scoring at every level is the most difficult job,” noted Tambi. “Over the last several years, teams at the collegiate and professional level have increased the emphasis on improving group defending and limiting goals against. We spend a fair amount of time in our training focusing on attacking, creating and finishing in the offensive third and our hope is that this work will translate into more goals for us. We learned a lot of tough lessons last season and I expect us to be more proficient in finishing our chances this season.”

Klemme and Shehaj will split time between midfield and forward positions while Cinelli and Hayes will do the same between defense and the attack to provide added depth.

The Pirates forge ahead into the upcoming season with two words in mind: consistency and results. Head coach Kazbek Tambi believes his team is ready to take the next step in transforming Seton Hall women’s soccer into a venerable force.

“Our kids and our staff realize that in order to close the gap between us and the top of the league,” Tambi stated. “We need to work extra hard. With added effort in training comes increased proficiency and confidence. While all of our players work extremely hard individually, ultimately if we are going to be successful it is because everybody understands how important adapting a team mentality is in winning tough games and reaching our goals.”

SETON HALLUNIVERSITY

Welcome to

Our focus is ethical leadership. Increasingly, using a strong moral compass to direct your lifestyle and work ethic is an important component in forging a successful career. This is why we offer classes in ethics and, beyond that, education guided by Catholic ideals and universal values.

Seton Hall provides a values-based education. Service learning is an intrinsic element of this. Value-neutral learning is like a ship at seat with no rudder.

FOR THE MINDWe offer more than 60 majors and concentrations taught by 860 full-time faculty, in five undergraduate schools - with practical, real-world emphasis.

FOR THE HEARTWe offer a compassionate, divers and collaborative environment that focuses on academic and ethical development.

FOR THE SPIRITOur faith and spiritual commitments inspire faculty to educate students to become servant leaders in their personal and professional lives, in their community and in their global society.

In our valued-centered curricula, programs and extracurricular activities, we focus on academics and devleopment of the individual. Our graduates continue to prove themselves as leaders in their professions and communities. Seton Hall gives you all the resources you would find in a large university. But, with only 5,200 undergraduates and a 15:1 student-faculty ratio, you get the personal attention of a small liberal arts college.

ON CAMPUS

We encourage ongoing, across-the-curriculum discussions on the ethics of business, medicine, teaching and other disciplines and urge you to use your personal morals and values in debating issues and making decisions. Underscoring our national prominence in emphasizing service learning and nurturing the spirit, the John Templeton Foundation has named Seton Hall as one of the country’s leaders in developing the character of its students.

Seton Hall is about caring and sharing - to pass a torch to students that is burning brighter than the one passed to us.

“Tony Lovisick, PH.D.

Chair, Finance and Legal Studies Stillman School of Business

Our faculty comprised of a distinguished group of scholars that have earned advanced degrees both in the U.S. and abroad. You will study alongside these learned men and women collaborating with them in developing new concepts and researching meaning-ful topics. And don’t think they won’t be involved in your academic careers - personal attention is at the heart of academic excellence.

I give the highest importance to my contact with students ... they are the school’s most important asset. “

Combine a student-discounted New Jersey transit ticket, with 30 minutes train-time, and you’re at Penn Statiion in Midtown Manhattan. From there, train, bus or walk to the neighborhood of your choice. Time Square’s Theater District: plays and musicals. Upper Fifth Avenue, dubbed Museum Mile; venerable institutions like the Metropolitan and the Guggenheim. Head Downtown and check out the financial district including the New York Stock Exchange. Besides the cultural and entertainment opportunities New York’s burrough of Manhattan provides, many students take advantage of internships with museums, nonprofit and government agencies, law and accounting firms, television and print media - the list goes on and on.

The Hall’s campus expands dramatically when you include the surrounding areas. Hop the train to the next town west, Maplewood, for a slice of pizza, or two stops and you are in Millburn with great sushi restaurants or just a few more and your are in Summit where you can do shopping at clothing stores like Benetton or Roots, Inc. And don’t forget about the Jersey Shore or skiing in Northern New Jersey in the winter.

Under Lyons, the Iona athletics department has seen unprecedented growth and success both on and off the fields of play. The men’s cross country team continued its storied success earning a second straight national runner-up finish at the NCAA Championship in November 2008. The program has finished in the Top-10 at the national championship in each of the last nine years. Along with the University of Wisconsin, no other program has seen the same success. The men’s and women’s basketball programs have established a reputation for being one of the top programs in the MAAC. The women enjoyed their most successful five-year stint in program history and have made three postseason appearances in the last four seasons. The men’s program earned an NCAA Championship appearance in 2006, won 21 games in 2009-10 and has continued to rank among the leaders in the MAAC and the New York Metropolitan Area.

Other Gael programs that saw success under Lyons tutelage have been the women’s cross country team with five straight MAAC Championships, the softball program earning its first ever bid to the NCAA Championship in 2010, the men’s soccer program with a MAAC Regular Season Championship in 2009 and a MAAC finals appearance in 2010. The volleyball team reached the NCAA Championship in 2004 and returned to the MAAC finals in 2010. In addition, Iona’s women’s lacrosse and women’s water polo programs continued to excel in 2009-10.

Where Lyons truly made his mark at Iona has been in fundraising and improvements made to athletics facilities. The Iona Gaels Capital Improvements Fund was created by Lyons as the first capital fundraising effort in the department’s history. Among several enhancements, the most dramatic and impressive changes were the opening of both the Hynes Athletics Center and the Judge Student-Athlete Academic Center in January of 2006. Lyons also oversaw the complete renovation of the varsity locker rooms - where each program now has its own space for the first time in school history, the addition of a video screening room for its athletic programs as well as the resurfacing of both the Hynes Center basketball/volleyball arena floor and the surface of Mazzella Field, home

of the soccer and lacrosse programs. In addition, Iona created Rice Oval Softball field, the first on-campus home for the softball program.

Before elevating to his current role, Lyons was the Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs. In that role, he was responsible for all revenue generation by the athletics department with primary oversight of the department’s fundraising arm - The Goal Club. This included, but was not limited to, all fundraising activities and marketing for the department including the annual golf tournament, sponsorships, and the annual fund.

Prior to that role, Lyons served as Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance. He oversaw all NCAA, MAAC, and institutional policies and regulations, as well as team scheduling, student-athlete financial aid, the student-athlete advisory committee, and payroll for all staff as well as student-workers. Lyons also coordinated the NCAA certification process, from the self study to on-campus visits.

As a coach, Lyons led the Iona golf team to its most successful four-year span. At the helm of the Gaels from 1998-02, he directed the squad to three MAAC Championships and earned a berth in the NCAA Golf Championship in each of his three full seasons.

A native of Providence, R.I., Lyons was a two-sport standout in hockey and golf. One of the most prolific scorers in school history, Lyons tallied 80 goals and 90 assists during his 86-game career and led all of NCAA Division I hockey in goals per game during the 1995-96 season. He captained the golf team during his junior and senior seasons and in 1996, received the Joseph O’Connell award, given annually to Iona’s most outstanding student-athlete.

In 1999, Lyons earned his master’s degree in teaching from Iona and earned an MBA from the Hagan School of Business in 2004. Lyons has also served as an adjunct professor in both the Biology department at Iona and the Sports Business Management program at Manhattanville College.

Lyons has served on several committees at the national and conference level. He is a member of the NCAA Division I Championships and Sports Management Cabinet where he serves as a liaison to the men’s and women’s ice hockey committees. Lyons served as the Chairman of MAAC Cross Country Committee and previously as chairman of the MAAC Committee on Athletics Administration. He also serves on the MAAC Marketing and Strategic Planning Committees.

Lyons is married to the former Rachel Cintolo, a pediatric nurse practitioner and clinical faculty at Columbia University.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS

MEMBERS OF THE BIG EAST CONFERENCE

THE BIG EAST CONFERENCE

The 2011-12 academic year is the 33rd in the history of The BIG EAST Conference as the unique consortium marches on competing at the highest level with integrity and sportsmanship.

The BIG EAST has gone through membership changes since its birth, but the 2011-12 year marks the conference’s seventh straight with the same 16-member group, making for the nation’s largest Division I-A conference.

The BIG EAST Conference’s goals have always been the same. The outstanding performances of the student-athletes at BIG EAST schools are evidence of the league’s proud tradition of success. The league has always been able to boast that many of its best students are also its best athletes. The 2010-11 year was no different.

Seven BIG EAST student-athletes were named NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners, while 22 earned Capital One Academic All-America recognition. Maya Moore, Connecticut’s women’s basketball standout, won the NCAA Honda-Broderick Cup as the nation’s top female student-athlete and was chosen as the Capital One Academic All-America of the Year.

In the athletic arena, BIG EAST student-athletes again enjoyed success on the national stage. The Connecticut men’s basketball team won its third national championship, completing a magical run through five games of the BIG EAST Championship and six wins in the NCAA tournament. The Villanova women’s cross country team won the NCAA title for the second straight year and the ninth time overall. The Notre Dame women’s soccer team won its third NCAA title, while BIG EAST teams reached national championship games in women’s basketball (Notre Dame) and men’s soccer (Louisville).

The BIG EAST placed two teams in the NCAA Women’s Final Four for the second time in the last three years as Connecticut joined Notre Dame in Indianapolis, capping a season in which the Huskies extended their NCAA-record winning streak to 90 games.

Individually, BIG EAST student-athletes won five NCAA championships, including an unprecedented four by Villanova’s Sheila Reid. Reid was the 2010 individual cross country champion, a member of the Wildcats’ winning indoor distance medley relay team and won the 5,000- and 1,500-meter titles in outdoor track & field. Louisville’s Matt Hughes, meanwhile, repeated as the NCAA champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA outdoor meet.

Moore and Reid joined Notre Dame soccer standout Melissa Henderson as winners of Honda Sports Awards as the top performers in their respective sports. Moore also became the first three-time winner of the Wade Trophy as the nation’s top women’s basketball player and joined Villanova lacrosse player Brian Karalunas as winners of the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award.

BIG EAST football maintained its national profile as a competitively balanced group.

Connecticut claimed the league’s Bowl Championship Series bid for the first time as the Huskies shared the conference title with Pittsburgh and West Virginia. Six of the league’s eight squads went to bowl games and helped the BIG EAST post a 4-2 bowl record for the second straight year.

The BIG EAST became the nation’s largest Division I-A conference in 2005-06 when five new members began competing – the University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, the University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida.

BIG EAST institutions reside in nine of the nation’s top 35 largest media markets, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Tampa, Pittsburgh, Hartford, Cincinnati and Milwaukee. With its newest members, BIG EAST markets contain almost one-fourth of all television households in the U.S. When Texas Christian University joins the conference in the 2012-13 academic year, the conference will have a footprint in 30 percent of the nation’s television households.

Since opening its doors in 1979, the league has won 31 national championships in six different sports and 133 student-athletes have won individual national titles.

In 2003-04, Connecticut became the first school in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball titles in the same season. In ’02-03, the BIG EAST became the first conference in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s titles in the same year when the Syracuse men and the Connecticut women captured their respective national championships. In men’s basketball, BIG EAST squads have won four of the last 13 NCAA championships. BIG EAST women’s teams have taken seven of the last 12 NCAA titles.

Proactive movement has been a signature strategy for the conference that was born in 1979. The BIG EAST continually turns challenges into opportunities to become stronger. The conference currently crowns champions in 24 sports.

The BIG EAST became a reality on May 31, 1979, following a meeting of athletic directors from Providence College, St. John’s, Georgetown and Syracuse universities. Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College completed the original seven school alliance.

While the membership has both increased and changed, the focus of the BIG EAST has not wavered. The conference reflects a tradition of broad based programs, led by administrators and coaches who place a constant emphasis on academic integrity. Its student athletes own significantly high graduation rates and their record of scholastic achievement notably show a balance between intercollegiate athletics and academics.

Any successful organization has had the good fortune to have outstanding leadership. The BIG EAST primarily was the brainchild of Dave Gavitt, who was the conference’s first Commissioner. Michael Tranghese, the league’s first full-time employee, and for 11 years the associate to Gavitt, became Commissioner in 1990. In his first year, he administered the formation of The BIG EAST Football Conference.

John Marinatto, who had served as senior associate commissioner, moved into the Commissioner’s chair in 2009 and has continued to steer the conference on its path of success.

The league has long been considered a leader in innovative concepts in promotion and publicity, particularly regarding television. Those efforts have resulted in unparalleled visibility for BIG EAST student athletes. The conference has enjoyed longstanding relationships with CBS, ESPN, Inc. and ABC.

BIG EAST men’s basketball games are regular sellouts at campus and major public arenas, including the annual men’s BIG EAST Championship in Madison Square Garden. The women’s basketball championship has led all conferences in attendance for the past eight years. Attendance figures also are significant in soccer and baseball.

The BIG EAST has its headquarters in Providence where the conference administers to more than 5,500 student-athletes.
