Record-breaking crowds flooded the Rock Island and Davenport riverfronts for Red, White & Boom, Street Fest and River Roots Live.

The bi-state Red, White & Boom 4th of July festival brought thousands of people to downtown Rock Island and Davenport.

Schwiebert Park celebrated its one-year anniversary at Red, White & Boom. Bill Nelson, Executive Director of Rock Island Parks & Recreation Board noted that the event “was a good opportunity to remind everyone of the progress both communities have made toward RiverVision.”

BixBrai – the nickname given to the biggest sporting event the state of Iowa has ever seen – brought widespread

attention to the Quad Cities as 18,000 bikers dipped their tires at Marquette St. landing while 19,000 runners braved Brady St. hill in the Quad-City Times Bix 7. It didn’t stop there; 25,000 stayed for the party with live music, festival food and family activities at Street Fest.

Just three weeks later, the Quad Cities welcomed the Grammy award-winning band Blues Traveler and multi-platinum album sellers Gin Blossoms to headline River Roots Live. The annual two-day music festival hosted a record-breaking 30,000 people in LeClaire Park.

Ken Croken, Chair of the downtown Davenport events committee, said “Each of these events is a significant display of cooperation and enthusiasm. These events bring together civic, non-profit and business organizations to put on quality events that members of our community can enjoy with their family.”

The Downtown Davenport Partnership, a division of the Quad Cities Chamber, coordinates each of these festivals alongside community partners to provide the community with quality events, and showcase the strength of our downtowns.

WHAT ARE YOU READING?I read an industry trade magazine called Convenience Store Decisions along with an email version and National Association of Convenience Stores. I also read Cigar Aficionado and Cigar Insider.

WHAT DO YOU WATCH?I like to keep up on current events and political issues so I watch different cable news shows.

WHAT ASPECT OF WORKING AT TOBACCO OUTLET PLUS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?Tobacco Outlet Plus is part of LaCrosse, WI-based business Kwik Trip, Inc. The one thing I am the most proud of is working for a company that is innovative and always improving operations. Tobacco Outlet Plus stores started about 15 years ago in Wisconsin and Iowa.

Our most recent store, at 4619 Brady St. in Davenport, has expanded offerings for our guests. What many people may not know is that we have our own dairy in Wisconsin, and items from our dairy are shipped to our store twice a week. Producing our own items helps us keep costs down and provide quality products.

Kwik Trip, Inc. is family owned, shares 40% of its profits with its employees, and lives by its mission statement“to serve our customers and community more effectively than anyone else by treating our customers, co-workers and suppliers as we, personally, would like to be treated and to make a difference in someone’s life.”

If you were at the Quad Cities Chamber’s annual meeting recently, you had the rare opportunity to hear from the golden boy.

More than 700 business leaders listened intently to this White House-advisor and financial industry-expert.

Richard Davis, President & CEO, U.S. Bancorp, didn’t spend his time on stage focused on the economy or the banking industry. Instead, he urged Quad Citians to appreciate the amazing community we live in. Davis asserted that the Quad Cities is well-positioned to succeed because the business community is unified, aggressive and enthusiastic about its goal to add jobs and increase prosperity.

“I left the meeting really encouraged by what I heard Davis say, because he gave us a pat on the back, saying we had a great start and great goals, but he also made us see that we are in a perfect position to move our community faster, farther,” said Tracy Schwind, Northwest Bank & Trust Company.

“It’s energizing to have someone from the outside help us see that. When you look at

the merger of the Chambers, that we were able to get that accomplished, and then immediately move forward with this nice cohesive plan,” Schwind continued.

Davis encouraged guests, “Why five years? Why not now?”

“The Quad Cities Chamber is here for businesses in their expansion, creation and retention needs, but it’s important to know that it’s the companies here, in this room, that will create the jobs and the prosperity. We’re your resource to accomplish this,” said Tara Barney, Quad Cities Chamber CEO.

Guests not only heard from keynote Davis, they also recognized the Volunteer of the Year, Lisa Sievert with OnMedia.

1,000 volunteers supported the Quad Cities Chamber last year. These volunteers helped implement the programs and events, garner support through membership and sponsorship sales, set the strategic work plan and carry out events valued by members and the community.

The Quad Cities has landed one of its biggest economic development deals in over a decade – the announcement of the $300 million Alcoa expansion.

The expansion will result in the creation of 150 new permanent jobs, the retention of 200 existing jobs, as well as 150 construction jobs at the Riverdale plant. The new and retained jobs have a starting wage of $20 per hour with benefits. Once completed, Alcoa will have more than 2,300 high value jobs in the Quad Cities.

While the project is valued at $300 million, the ripple effect of the additional salaries in our community increases the value to $500 million.

The Quad Cities facility was in competition with four other Alcoa sites for this production expansion.

“The Quad Cities Chamber is committed to ensuring that our local businesses have the resources and support they need to not only remain a part of this community, but to expand,” says Tara Barney, CEO, Quad Cities Chamber of Commerce. “This expansion is a perfect example what an economic development organization is supposed to do, which is be a known resource to our business community, to enact our knowledge of incentives and align the correct people and resources to get our businesses the tools they need to expand,” Barney continued.

The Quad Cities Chamber of Commerce economic development team began working with Alcoa several months ago to help identify cost advantages of the Quad Cities as the location for the expansion. Three key factors helped land the expansion in the Quad Cities: a highly productive workforce, access to reliable and affordable utilities and relationships with state and local agencies that understand and can accommodate growth.

“It’s a fabulous facility. It’s a pillar for our aerospace business,” said Kevin Lowery, director of corporate communications for parent company Alcoa, Inc. of the Quad Cities facility. “There’s not a plane flying in the world that doesn’t have metal coming out of that plant. Now, it will be the hope that there won’t be a car driving on the road in the United States that won’t have metal coming out of that plant,” continued Lowery.

Once Alcoa decided to pursue the expansion in our region, the Chamber’s economic development staff began to help with financial incentive packaging with the State of Iowa and local communities. Ultimately, Alcoa was awarded a $3 million state incentive package.

“No ifs, and or buts, it was a big help in making sure that it was secured here,” Lowery said of the Iowa Economic Development Board’s approval of a forgivable loan and other incentives for the project.

Alcoa is expanding to meet the increased demand of aluminums among auto makers. A study of automakers by Ducker Worldwide projected automakers will increase their aluminum use from 327 pounds in 2009 to 550 pounds in 2025. Aluminum use already has reached an all-time high of 343 pounds per vehicle in the 2012 model cars – a five percent increase over the 2011 cars.

New jobs are big news these days, and the Chamber has its eye on local business expansion.

In the Chamber’s plan to facilitate the addition of 5,000 new jobs in our region, the lion’s share of those jobs, 3,500 of them, are anticipated to develop from the expansion of local businesses.

The Chamber’s new committee, the Business Growth Council, is set to oversee business expansion efforts to ensure the Chamber is doing all it can to support companies already invested in our market. Made up of 10 local business owners, the group will assist the Chamber in identifying needs, concerns, obstacles and opportunities to grow local companies.

Similar to the way the Quad Cities First board oversees activity related to business attraction, the Business Growth Council will oversee business expansion efforts.

“The Council’s focus will be to leverage the skills and power of the Chamber staff and membership to help locally-owned businesses flourish and grow. We’ll be looking to Chamber

members to help determine exactly what tasks are most critical, but we expect advocacy and business climate issues to be some of our top priorities,” says Kelli Grubbs, co-chair, Business Growth Council.

FIRST ARMYRELOCATIONCOMMONALITIES

WITH THE QC BUSINESS COMMUNITY

The first three-star general ever to be stationed on the Rock Island Arsenal, Lieutenant General Mick Bednarek, addressed the business community for the first time at a Quad Cities Chamber breakfast. There, the commanding general likened developing soldiers to building a staff.

“We are in the same business of developing and shaping our community and the Nation’s future leaders, regardless of profession,” Lt. Gen. Bednarek stated at the meeting. “You and I know that as we train, build and strengthen the core of our workforce, whether it’s a soldier in the Army or a worker in a warehouse downtown, we are building stronger citizens, and ultimately a stronger America,” Bednarek continued.

First Army relocated approximately 300 soldiers and Department of the Army civilians from Fort Gillem, GA to the Quad Cities this summer. The command is responsible for mobilizing, training and deploying all Army National Guard and Army Reserve forces around the world. First Army ensures America’s reserve component (RC) Soldiers have the skills necessary for success in combat.

First Army was officially established on August 10, 1918 in France, and has consistently answered the call to defend freedom and democracy around the world. Led by Lieutenant General Bednarek, First Army has been nationally recognized for its roles in spearheading disaster relief for Hurricane Katrina, training and mobilizing soldiers for the first Gulf War, and being the first soldiers to enter Paris during World War II.

First Army has trained and mobilized over 700,000 servicemen and women since 9-11 and is projected to train approximately 69,000 soldiers in 2012.

“The Quad Cities and Rock Island Arsenal are gaining a notable reputation for their manufacturing, logistics, and contracting expertise,” says Paul Rumler, Executive Vice President, Quad Cities Chamber of Commerce. “The soldiers mobilized, trained and deployed by First Army rely upon the unique synergies present at Rock Island Arsenal to protect our freedom around the world.”

The defense industry continues to be an integral part of the region’s workforce. The most recent unemployment figures released by the Illinois Department of Employment Security indicated that the Quad Cities has the lowest unemployment rate in Illinois, with defense being a contributing factor to that rate.

“The Quad Cities is seeing increased interest from private companies that want to partner or do business with the Rock Island Arsenal’s many commands. This helps create jobs and build economic strength for the entire region,” Rumler said.

GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER

Aaron TennantVice President, Tennant Truck Lines, Inc.

Brigadier General Kendall PennDeputy Commanding General, First Army

WHOM I’D INVITE TO DINNER: Ronald Reagan, 40th president of the United States

WHY: He was my childhood hero. I’d love to hear what he would say about our economic situation now.

WHAT I WOULD SERVE: I’d serve a simple Midwestern meal with filet mignon and a baked potato. A weak Orange Blossom for the former president (sweet vermouth, orange juice and a little gin) and a Crown Royal on the rocks for me.

WHOM I’D INVITE TO DINNER: I’ve got a whole list of people that I’d like to invite, but if it came down to a single choice, I’d have to pick my deceased grandmother, hands down!

WHY: I’d like to listen just once more to some of the oral history of our family that I heard when I was a boy but have since forgotten. Maybe this time, I’d be smart enough to write it all down or record it.

WHAT I WOULD SERVE: I’d serve fried chicken, purple hull peas, fried okra, fresh tomatoes, cornbread, and sweet tea. And to tell the truth, I’d probably try to arrange for her to come over a little early. She loved to cook and would probably run me out of the kitchen. Then, not only would I be able to have her over for dinner, but I’d be able to eat her cooking just one more time!

WE ASKED TWO QUAD CITIES CHAMBER MEMBERS WHOM THEY WOULD ASK TO DINNER (HISTORICALLY OR MODERN DAY) AND WHY. AND JUST FOR FUN, WE ASKED WHAT THEY WOULD SERVE THEIR GUESTS.

In a nod to our region’s entrepreneurial know-how, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)

recently announced the designation of Iowa’s Davenport Public Library as a Patent and Trademark Resource Center (PTRC).

This center will be the only one of its kind serving western Illinois and the entire state of Iowa. The next closest center is located in Chicago. The Davenport Public Library was chosen due to the high volume of patent and trademark information from the Quad Cities region. The former host of the network, Des Moines, received more requests from western Illinois and Eastern Iowa than from any other region in the state of Iowa.

“The addition of the PTRC to our area will be incredibly useful not only to individual inventors and entrepreneurs, but also to our area businesses that are regularly creating and patenting new and improved products. The selection of the Quad Cities for this resource is an affirmation of our strong entrepreneurial heritage,” says Chad Stamper, Executive Director of the Quad Cities Chamber NewVentures Center.

USPTO’s Patent and Trademark Resource Center is a nationwide

network of public, state, special and academic libraries authorized to disseminate patent and trademark information and to support inventors, intellectual property attorneys, business people, researchers,

entrepreneurs and others.

Currently there are 81 centers in the country, and the Davenport

library will be the first to house an all-electronic database.

Natalie Linville-Mass, president of Rock Island based advertising agency Media Link, Inc., is a perfect example of a Quad Citian patenting new and improved products.

Media Link recently announced the nationwide launch of its own web-based media buying system, Media Link Software (MLS).

“This new software not only gives the companies we serve precise information, it also is designed to save advertising agencies a tremendous amount of time,” says Linville-Mass.

“There are similar products that do similar things, but not one that does everything MLS does,” Linville-Mass continues. “Arbitron and Strata are the only two databases that come close in functionality.”

When Natalie began this venture, Chad Stamper was the first person she went to for consultation.

“He immediately saw the big picture, and got me connected with Joel White of the Illinois Small Business Development Center, as well as Anne Hutchison of the Iowa Small Business Development Center. That connection, and the work that the Small Business Development Centers did, helped me get the backing I needed to make MLS a reality.”
