The Schertz Chamber of Com-merce was established on June 28, 2005 with 29 found-ing Member businesses, but its roots began in 1974 with the Schertz Business Associa-tion. The evolution from the SBA to the Schertz Cham-ber was necessitated by the incredible growth the city of Schertz has experienced over the past 10 years.
The Schertz Chamber of Com-merce is not a department
of the City, county, state or federal government, but a non-profit 501C-6. We are fiscally supported by our Members, who in doing this, are investing in the local community.
A volunteer Board of Direc-tors consisting of owners and managers of local businesses have hired a President who di-rects the staff according to the policies and procedures set by the Board through the Cham-ber’s Bylaws. The Board also convenes yearly for a strategic planning session which reviews the passing year and sets new goals for the coming year.
Benefits to being a Chamber Member include opportuni-ties for business promotion, networking and building com-munity among local and area business men and women, as well as having an advocate in the progress and growth of your business.

Our Mission is to engage in projects that have a positive economic impact on the citizens of the Schertz area and/or Members of the Schertz Chamber of Commerce. We do this through our Monthly Lun-cheons, After Hour’s Mixers, Business Expo, Taste of the Town and Golf Classic. The Schertz Chamber of Com-merce Ambassadors Committee is designed to not only uphold and support the Mission of the Schertz Chamber of Commerce but also to serve as a link between the Cham-ber board, staff and the general membership.
The Ambassador Committee provides opportunities for you to meet local business people and build lasting relationships. Through surveys, networking and interact-ing, the Ambassadors help the Chamber gather feedback that will help to develop the programs and initiatives our members need and will support.
By attending events, Ambassadors can facilitate not only the Cham-ber’s connection to members but develop relationships for their own businesses as well. The Ambassador’s Committee offers the opportunity to meet the newly opened businesses that join the Chamber and also make sure that the needs of our current members are being met.
Ambassadors serve the Chamber through participation in events such as Business Expos, Taste of the Town, Mix-ers, Ribbon Cuttings, Ground Breakings and Chamber Luncheons.

Schertz has grown from a small frontier town once called
“Cut Off,” into a bustling, urban area. We are a unique city that blends

The first settlers came to Schertz, then known then as Cibolo Pit, around 1843. It soon be-came known as “Cut Off;” for when the Cibolo Creek flooded, the settlement was cut off from contact with others until the waters receded. Wheat, oats, and corn were the crops that were first planted by the settlers, but in later years cotton was planted and proved to be a very productive, cash-producing crop. This, in turn, created a need for two cotton gins in Schertz at one time. In 1870, the first gin was built by the Schertz family. The now vacant post office on Main Street is where the gin was located.
In 1876, one of the largest boosts to Schertz came when the Galveston, Harrisburg, and San Antonio Railroad was built through the town. Sebastian Schertz owned and operated a general store when the railroad was con-structed. In 1882, soon after the railroad ar-rived, the first post office was established. Still known as Cut Off, the town officially became
Schertz, Texas in 1899.
Many of the original buildings are still standing from when Schertz first began. One of the oldest business buildings in Schertz is the red brick building on Main Street. It was built by Mr. Willie Schertz and was the first mercantile store. In later years it housed Sippels Hardware Store.
In March of 1916, nurse Cora Karbach, who had been serving the health needs of Cibolo Valley, purchased an acre of land from Ferdinand Schertz and contracted for a hospital to be built. It was in opera-tion until 1938. In March 2009, it was dedi-cated as a Schertz historic landmark.
Schertz was incorporated as a City by the State of Texas in 1958.

Two major thoroughfares, IH-35 and IH-10, run along the City’s northern and southern corpo-rate limits, and no point in the city is more than 4 miles from an interstate. All three of the city’s industrial and business parks are within 1.5 miles of Interstate 35.
