Giants History 2010 DIVISION SERIES: SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS VS. ATLANTA BRAVES

Friday, October 8 Braves 5 Giants 4 (11 innings)Game 2 at AT&T Park: Rick Ankiel splashed a home run into McCovey Cove in the 11th inning to help Atlanta rally from a 4-run deficit to beat the Giants 5-4 in Game 2 of the LDSAtlantas rally spoiled a strong postseason debut by Giants starter Matt Cain, who allowed 1 unearned run in 6.2 inningsPat Burrell hit a 3-run homer in the 1st frame to stake SF to a quick leadAtlanta came back with 3 runs in the 8th, including a game-tying 2-run double from Alex Gonzalez off Brian Wilson, who was trying to record a 6-out saveAnkiels drive, which came on a 2-2 pitch from Ramon Ramirez, was just the 2nd splash home run in the postseason at AT&T Park Game Notes: Pat Burrells 3-run home run gave Giants a 3-0 lead...according to Elias, the only other Giants player to hit a home run in the 1st inning of a postseason game played at home was Mel Ott in Game 1 of the 1933 World Series against the Washington Senators at the Polo Grounds...Matt Cain became the 1st Giants pitcher with a postseason RBI since Johnny Antonelli in Game 2 of the 1954 World SeriesIts a tough loss, no getting around it. You have to bounce back. They fought hard. We had a couple of chances to add on, but their pen shut us down.Bruce Bochy, Giants manager

San franciSco GiantS 2011

Sunday, October 10 Giants 3 Braves 2Game 3 at Turner Field: San Francisco rallied past the Braves 3-2 thanks in large part to 3 fielding errors by Atlanta second baseman Brooks Conradhis last error of the night occurred on a 2-out grounder in the 9th inning that gave the Giants the victorystarter Jonathan Sanchez limited the Braves to just 2 hits, however, Atlanta took the lead in the 8th when pinch-hitter Eric Hinske lined a 2-run homer off Sergio Romo, sending the standing-room crowd of 53,284 into a frenzyBraves rookie reliever Craig Kimbrel was within one out of a save before the Giants ralliedAubrey Huff tied it with a run-scoring single off Mike Dunn and then Buster Posey hit a grounder to Conrad, who allowed the go-ahead run to scoreBrian Wilson shut down the Braves in the 9th to give SF a 2-1 lead in a tense best-of-five series Game Notes: Jonathan Sanchezs 11 strikeouts were the most in a single game in the postseason by a Giants left-handed pitcher in franchise history (since 1900)...the only other left-handed Giants hurler to fan 10-or-more in a postseason game was Carl Hubbell, who struck out 10 batters on October 3, 1933 vs. the Washington Senators in Game 1 of the World Series...To come back like that after a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth, I mean, that can take the wind out of your sails. And these guys came right back and found a way to get it done. That is a great win.Bruce Bochy, Giants manager

Giants History 2010 DIVISION SERIES: SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS VS. ATLANTA BRAVES

Monday, October 11 Giants 3 Braves 2Game 4 at Turner Field: The Giants celebrated their 1st playoff series victory in 8 years and then honored the man whose career they had just endedGiants players and coaches tipped their caps to Braves manager Bobby Cox, who managed his final game, then the club headed off to savor a 3-2 victory that sent them to the NL Championship Series for the 1st time since 200221-year-old rookie Madison Bumgarner logged 6.0 innings, Cody Ross homered and drove in the go-ahead run in the 7th inning, and the Giants bullpen shut down the Braves to close out the best-of-five seriesBraves starter Derek Lowe blanked the Giants without a hit through the 1st 5.1 innings, before Cody Ross hit a line drive home run that barely cleared the wall in left field, tying the game at 1-1Atlanta took the lead again in the 6th after Brian McCann hit a solo home run. But, Lowe then ran out of gas in the 7th as Juan Uribe drove in the game-tying run with a fielders choice ground out off Peter Moylan and then Ross broke the 2-2 tie with a 2-out single to left Game Notes: The entire series was tight and tense as it was the 1st in postseason history in which all of the games were decided by one runthe score was tied or within one run over the final 22 innings, which according to Elias, was the longest such streak to end a postseason series in baseball historyMadison Bumgarner became the youngest Giants pitcher to win a postseason game, at age 21 Bumgarner also became the 2nd youngest pitcher to win a series clincher in postseason historyIf youre a baseball fan, you had to love this series, Bruce Bochy, Giants manager I watched the whole throw, every millisecond of it, watched Ishikawas foot, saw the umpire call him out and then pandemonium. Wednesday, October 20 Giants 6 Phillies 5Game 4 at AT&T Park: Juan Uribe put the Giants just one win away from the World Series after coming through with a walk-off sacrifice fly off Roy Oswalt with one out in the 9th inning to help the Giants take Game 4 by a 6-5 count and a 3-1 lead in the seriesSF pushed the Phillies to the brink of elimination after Aubrey Huff singled with one out in the 9th, then took 3rd when Buster Posey singled for his 4th hit of the gameUribe hit a medium-deep fly ball to left field where Ben Francisco had no chance to throw Huff out at homePosey not only starred at the plate, but behind it as well, as he made a great play to save a run earlier in the game, handling a short hop from center fielder Aaron Rowand and tagging out Carlos Ruiz at the plate in the 5thPosey had an RBI double in the 1st inning, a runscoring single in the 3rd and a 7th inning doublerookie Madison Bumgarner struck out 6 in 4.2 innings Game Notes: Buster Posey became the 1st rookie in the San Francisco era and 2nd in club history to record 4 hits in a postseason game (also Freddy Lindstrom had 4 hits on Oct. 8, 1924 in Game 5 of the World Series against the Washington Senators)only one other rookie catcher in ML history had 4 hits in a postseason gameon Oct. 10, 1946, Joe Garagiola had 4 knocks and 3 RBI to lead the Cardinals to a 12-3 win over the Red Sox at Fenway Park in Game 4 of the World Series (Elias)Posey also became just the 5th rookie ever with at least 4 hits and 2 RBI in a postseason gameI got butterflies. I got anxiety. I got a mini-ulcer developing, but its all worth it. We never lost focus. Brian Wilson

Giants History 2010 CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES: SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS VS. PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES

Thursday, October 21 Phillies 4 Giants 2Game 5 at AT&T Park: Roy Halladay, pitching with an injured right groin, defeated Tim Lincecum and the Giants 4-2 in Game 5 to send the series back to Philadelphiathe Phillies were sparked by a 3-run 3rd inning when Shane Victorino drove in the 1st of 2 runs that scored on a fielding error by 1st baseman Aubrey HuffVictorinos grounder bounced off Huffs glove and wound up in center field as a pair of runs scoredPlacido Polanco followed with an RBI single to push the Phillies advantage to 3-1the Giants had tying runs in scoring position in the 4th, 5th and 6th innings, but couldnt capitalizeSan Francisco struck 1st when Buster Posey plated Andres Torres on an RBI groundout in the games opening frameSFs only other run came on an RBI double from Cody Ross in the 4th to pull the Giants within one run, 3-2Jayson Werths solo home run in the 9th silenced the raucous crowd of 43,713 Game Notes: Tim Lincecum struck out 29 batters in his 1st 3 postseason games, the 2nd-most by a pitcher in his 1st 3 career postseason contests, trailing only Bob Gibson (31)the Phillies became just the 7th team in postseason history to defeat a multi-time Cy Young Award winner to avoid elimination in a postseason seriesWe just didnt play great fundamental baseball tonight. No doubt the error was big but we werent able to get the big hit with runners in scoring position. If youd have told us when the series started that we were going to be in this position I think wed all take it. But we have to go out there and play like weve been playing all year. Aubrey Huff

San franciSco GiantS 2011

Saturday, October 23 Giants 3 Phillies 2Game 6 at Citizens Bank Park: The Giants won the pennant for the 19th time in club history and for the 1st time since 2002 with their 3-2 victory over the Phillies at Citizens Bank ParkJuan Uribes 2-out, tiebreaking solo home run in the 8th inning off Ryan Madson lifted the scrappy Giants and put them in position to win their 1st-ever World Series in San Francisco historyPhillies slugger Ryan Howard looked at a called 3rd strike from closer Brian Wilson with runners on 1st and 2nd to end the Phillies seasonWilson notched the final 5 outs for his 3rd save of the seriesthe Giants overcame a 2-0 deficit in the 1st inning, but tied it in the 3rd after Jonathan Sanchez and Andres Torres opened the frame with singlesFreddy Sanchez sacrificed them over to 2nd and 3rd before Aubrey Huff put the Giants on the board with a single to center, scoring Sanchez, however, Shane Victorino threw out Torres at the plateHuff advanced to 2nd on the throw home and scored the tying run when 3rd baseman Placido Polanco made a throwing error to 1st on Buster Poseys slow rollerJ. Sanchez worked just 2.0 innings, allowing a pair of runs on 3 hits, before handing the ball to the bullpen, which combined for 7.0-scoreless innings, including 2 each from Jeremy Affeldt and Madison BumgarnerUribe, who hit a game-ending sacrifice fly to give the Giants a 3-1 series lead in Game 4, drove an opposite-field homer that barely cleared the right-field wall in the 8th, sending the Giants dugout into a frenzyWilson entered the game after Tim Lincecum allowed consecutive one-out singles in the 8th inning Wilson got Carlos Ruiz to lineout into a double-play to escape the frame and then he made it interesting in the 9th, issuing walks to Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley, before striking out Howard to end the game Game Notes: Cody Ross was named the MVP of the NLCS, becoming just the 4th player in Giants history to take home NLCS MVP honors (also Jeffrey Leonard in 1987, Will Clark in 1989 and Benito Santiago in 2002)Juan Uribe became the 1st Giant to hit a go-ahead home run in the 8th inning or later of a postseason game since Benito Santiago in the 2002 NLCSthose are the only 2 players to do that since the team moved West in 1958Uribe also became just the 7th player to record a pair of winning RBI in the same postseason series, with both coming in the 8th inning or laterthe Giants became the 3rd team to win a Game 6 or 7 by one run on the road to clinch a postseason series, joining the 1986 Mets and 1997 Indians (Elias)We had such a diversity of contributions from everybody. Not bad for a bunch of castoffs and misfits. Bruce Bochy, Giants Manager Im speechless, just breathless. Its a great opportunity to see what we can do on a bigger stage. 2010 WORLD SERIESSAN FRANCISCO GIANTS vs. TEXAS RANGERS(Giants win series, 4 games to 1) Wednesday, October 27 Giants 11 Rangers 7Game 1 at AT&T Park: San Franciscos bats were on fire as they battered Cliff Lee and the Rangers bullpen with an 11-7 victory in the opening game of the 2010 World Series what looked to be a pitchers duel between Lee and Tim Lincecum turned out to be an offensive outburst by both teamsFreddy Sanchez finished with 4 of the Giants 14 hitsAubrey Huff went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Juan Uribe capped a 6-run 5th inning with a 3-run home run, which set off the fog horn and blasts from water cannons out in right fieldthe Giants had gotten through the 1st two rounds of the playoffs with their dominant pitching and their ability to win close, low-scoring games, however, it didnt happen on this nightLincecum was touched for 4 runs on 8 hits in just 5.2 innings, his shortest start of the postseason Lee had entered the game just one win shy of matching the record for the best start to a postseason career, however, was tagged for 7 runs on 8 hits in 4.2 innings Game Notes: Freddy Sanchez became the 1st player to hit a double in each of his 1st 3 Series at-batshis 4 hits matched a World Series single-game record, done 8 times previouslythe last time the Giants had scored 6 runs in an inning during the postseason was in the 1937 World SeriesSFs 11 runs were tied for 3rd-most in Giants World Series historyBuster Posey became just the 2nd rookie catcher in World Series history to bat 3rd in the lineup, joining Yogi Berra, who hit 3rd for the New York Yankees as a rookie in the 1947 World Series against BrooklynYou never think youre going to have success against a pitcher (Cliff Lee) like that. Hes one of the best pitchers in the game, been unhittable in the postseason. Freddy Sanchez

Giants History 2010 WORLD SERIES: SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS VS. TEXAS RANGERS

Thursday, October 28 Giants 9 Rangers 0Game 2 at AT&T Park: Matt Cain stymied the Rangers offense and Edgar Renteria homered and drove in 3 runs as the Giants took a commanding 2-0 Series lead with a 9-0 victory in Game 2San Francisco improved to 11-0 against Texas at AT&T Parkof the 51 teams to take a 2-0 lead in the World Series, 40 have won it all, including 13 of the past 14 occasionsCain, who pitched 7.2-scoreless innings, allowed only one unearned run in 21.1 innings over his 3 postseason starts to join Christy Mathewson (1905) and Carl Hubbell (1933), the Yankees Waite Hoyt (1921) and Detroits Kenny Rogers (2006) as the only pitchers to allow no unearned runs in 20-or-more innings in a single postseason...Renteria smacked a solo home run into the left-field bleachers off LHP C.J. Wilson to break a scoreless tie in the 5th inning and then added a 2-run single during a 7-run 8th inning after the Rangers bullpen lost the strike zone and issued 4-straight 2-out walks in the 8th inning which let the game get out of control Game Notes: The 9-0 shutout was the largest in a World Series game since the Royals 11-0 win over the Cardinals in Game 7 of the 1985 World Seriesit was also tied for the 2nd-largest by an NL team...the Giants scored 7 runs in the 8th inning, all with 2 outsaccording to Elias, only one other team has scored at least 7 2-out runs in an inning in a World Series game (Red Sox in Game 1 of the 2007 World Series scored 7 in the 5th inning)Weve put ourselves in a good situation. Weve just got to take that confidence and some of the good approaches that weve had in these last two games and take them down to Texas with us. Matt Cain, who didnt allow an earned run in the postseason.

I was numb at first because you understand how hard this is to do. As long as Ive been fortunate enough to be in this game, you know, you dream about this. And last night, I didnt sleep, to be honest. I was thinking about it, youre on the verge, you know how close you are, and you put this on such a pinnacle, you get butterflies.
