Governor’s Message By 2010—2011 Rotaract Governor Cheryl J. Wong

This month I feel I have an added sense of excitement, enthusiasm, and love

for my relationship with Rotaract and Rotary and I wanted to share with you

what has lead to this. I have always loved Rotary, but a lot has happened

recently that really shows what we are all about. A couple of weeks ago, I was

giving a speech at a Los Angeles 5 Rotary meeting. As part of my speech, I

told the members a little of my history with Rotary; how I was in Interact in

high school, later I joined Rotary to become a Director of Youth Service, and

now I am a Rotaractor. I said that I would be returning to Rotary, because I

am a “LIFER.” This fact received a round of applause from the Rotarians, be-

cause many of them are “lifers” too as I hope that many of the Rotaractors

reading this message feel they are. I have been thinking a lot about why I am

a lifer, what is it about Rotaract that is so meaningful to me.

Well, I like to keep up to date on what is happening in the “World of Rotary”

in part, so I can also keep all of you up to date as well, and let me tell you, a

lot has been going on locally, nationally, and internationally. The biggest

being the 2011 International Assembly that took place in San Diego last week.

This is where all of next year's Rotary District Governors from around the world go to get new ideas, skills, and friend-

ships that will help them lead during the 2011-12 year. At the International Assembly, Rotary International (RI) Presi-

dent Elect Kalyan Banerjee announced next year's RI theme Reach Within to Embrace Humanity. Later in the week

current RI President Ray Klinginsmith elaborated with a quote that really resonated with me. “Service, fellowship, integ-

rity, diversity, and leadership are our core values, which I prefer to call our Rotary DNA," Klinginsmith said. "Those

traits are what distinguish us from other organizations. There is no doubt that we can help our club leaders to Reach Within to Embrace Humanity, and to make the world a better place, because we have been doing it for more than

100 years, and we do it better than anyone else in the world." The moment I read that, I thought to myself, that is

exactly it, this is what being a Rotaractor is all about. This is what we represent, it is in our Rotary DNA.

A local event took place yesterday that exemplified all of that. Westchester Rotary Club had the unveiling of their third

Rotary Home Makeover. Rotaract volunteers joined dozens of others to help renovate the home of a local woman who

has cerebral palsy and had to stop working some time ago as she battled cancer. Her home had fallen into disrepair,

much of the damage stemming from a leaking roof. After much planning, over the course of nine days her home re-

ceived a new roof, windows, floors, interior and exterior painting, landscaping, and furniture. You can read more

and being a part of something so great in my community filled me with pride that I can claim to be a member of this

great organization. I know that Rotaract and Rotary will always be a part of my life. I truly believe in what it stands

for. I hope that you have had moments where you have felt the same. If you would like an opportunity to get more

involved, I encourage you to apply to be on the District Leadership Team (see below). Being a Rotaractor and espe-

cially serving as District Rotaract Governor is extremely meaningful in my life and I am so glad I was given the oppor-

tunity.

World Rotaract Week - Water Pasteurization Indicators Project

A Water Pasteurization Indicator (WAPI) is a simple thermometer that indicates when water has reached pasteurization tem-

perature and is safe to drink. It was invented by Fred Barrett and Dale Andreatta.

Pasteurization destroys all microorganisms that cause diseases from drinking contaminated water and milk. A small polycar-

bonate tube contains a wax that melts when water or milk is heated enough to be pasteurized (65˚C/149˚F). This saves much

fuel by eliminating the need to boil water or milk to ensure that the pasteurization temperature has been reached.

Since water pasteurizes at temperatures well below the boiling point of water, WAPIs save time when solar pasteurizing, and

save fuel when using traditional fuels.

Every year, World Rotaract Week honors the chartering of the first Rotaract club in 1968. World Rotaract Week is a time for

Rotaractors and Rotarians around the world to come together to celebrate the success and importance of the Rotaract program.

This event is also an excellent opportunity to inform members of your community about the amazing work that Rotaract clubs

do, and give them an opportunity to get involved.

Heifer Revisited

During the entire 2008-09 Rotaract year, clubs in District 5280 raised money for Heifer International. They are a

non-profit organization that helps communities become self-sustainable and self-reliant through improved animal

and agricultural management. With the help of a Rotary Matching Grant, we were able to donate $30,000. Then

in 2010, Rotaractors from the District had the opportunity to visit the site of the Heifer project we helped sponsor in

Quevedo, Ecuador. Since that trip, Rotaractors have also volunteered at the Heifer booth at the Orange County Fair

and District Governor Cheryl has spoken to Whitney High School's Key Club about her personal experience in Ec-

2011 - 2012 District Leadership Application

Each year the Rotaract club members and select Rotarians of District 5280 elect a leadership team from

within the ranks to carry out all aspects of the Rotaract program. This team works all year long with Rota-

ract club members, Rotary cubs, and Rotary district leadership closely to produce a world class program.

The purpose of our Rotaract district is to provide an opportunity for young men and women to enhance

the knowledge and skills in the areas of personal development, addressing the physical and social needs

of their community, promoting better relations between all peoples worldwide through a framework of

friendship and service, and whose goals are:

a) To develop professional and leadership skills

b) To emphasize respect for the rights of others, and to promote ethical standards and the dignity of all

useful occupations

c) To provide opportunities for young people to address the needs and concerns of the community and

our world

d) To provide opportunities for working in cooperation with sponsoring Rotary clubs

e) To motivate young people for eventual membership in Rotary

Meredith K. Olson Scholarship Application

The Meredith K. Olson Award was created in 2003 in honor of our Past Rotaract Governor Meredith

Olson. The award is a $1,000 scholarship which can be applied to assist with tuition at an accredited

institution of higher education, or to offset the cost of Rotary/Rotaract sponsored events.

Meredith Olson worked with a passionate spirit to set the foundation of our Rotaract District, and

strongly believed in the ideals of Rotaract. A qualified candidate for this award will hold these

ideals equally as high and demonstrate it through their commitment to their club and to service.

The El Camino College Rotaract Club, Hawthorne Rotary Club, and Hawthorne High Interact Club celebrated Rotary Cares Day

by working to improve Eucalyptus Park in Hawthorne. The clubs spent the day planting trees, shrubbery, and cleaning up at

the park. The first ever eucalyptus trees at Eucalyptus Park were planted on Rotary Cares Day. The park was sparse, dull, and

uninviting prior to Rotary Cares Day. Due to the hard work of Rotarians, Rotaractors, and Interactors, the park is now a beauti-

ful and welcoming beacon to the community.

The South Bay Rotaract Club and Carson Gardena Dominguez Rotary Club celebrated Rotary Cares Day by cleaning up the

cactus garden at the Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum. The two clubs spent the early afternoon cleaning up debris and re-

moving old, dead cactus, palm frawns and other plants from the garden. Due to their hard work they were able to fill a whole

dumpster and then some. Before they had arrived the garden wasn’t in the best shape but after just a few hours it looked re-

freshed, almost like it had just been planted. After working in the garden the two clubs had lunch on the patio. This was a

great opportunity for members of both clubs to strengthen their relationships and get to know more about each other. South

Bay Rotaractors can’t wait to get back out and serve with their fellow Rotarians!


Toys to Tecate District Service Project Recap

Six Rotaract clubs all joined together at a delicious restaurant in downtown San Diego called Miguel's Cocina. Among the

clubs included Rotaractors from UC San Diego Rotaract Club, Downtown San Diego Rotaract Club, South Bay Rotaract Club,

West LA Rotaract Club, UCLA Rotaract Club, and Santa Monica College Rotaract Club. It was a successful social event with a

great turnout for networking. Rotaractors were spread out mingling with different members from different clubs. This made the

dinner table lively with intelligent, funny, and informative conversations. It seems like a bright future ahead for all the Rotaract

Clubs that participated in this social event.

The morning following the social event in San Diego, was Toys to Tecate. Nine Rotaractors from District 5280 joined together

and met at the Tecate, Mexico border. There were several Rotarians, Rotaractors, and other volunteers there to welcome us. As

soon as everyone was checked in, we all walked through the boarder pedestrian entry way and loaded on to two buses that

took us to the Tecate Sports Stadium. Upon entry, there were hundreds of Tecate families cheering in the bleachers. All volun-

teers reported to their stations and sooner than later, we were passing out bags of toys, candy, hygienic supplies, fruit, etc. The

Toys to Tecate staff were very friendly and organized for families to come in single file lines to collect their goods. District 5280

Rotaractors were in charge of the hygienic station in which we passed out tooth paste, tooth brushes, and candy canes. District

Governor Cheryl Wong received a generous donation of one hundred toothpastes and toothbrushes for next month's District

5280 Humanitarian Trip to the Dominican Republic. The event lasted approximately 4 hours. As soon as the last family exited

the stadium, we were on our way home to Los Angeles. Toys to Tecate was a very special event leaving us warm hearted.

of goodies, discovered something -I can hardly

guess what- made him leap into the air,

screaming: '¡¡Orale!!'

It's always nice to share holiday spirit with

kids, especially with the underprivileged ones.

Helping to distribute toys and toiletries is

always worth a weekend and a long drive.

South Bay Rotaract Club hosted a Wine Tasting last Friday January 28th at Lido's di Manhattan Ristorante & Bar in Manhattan

Beach. The evening brought Rotaractors, Rotarians, and guests together to taste Argentinean wines. Over 30 attendees came

out to the event. Between the tasting, 50/50 raffle, and a portion of the food and wine sales going to the club, South Bay Rota-

ract raised about $400 for service projects. Special thanks to Lido's owner Lisa Hemmat for all her support to our club!

Rotaract is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young men and women ages 18 to 30.
