LANSING TWP. - Itall started over 30 yearsago when Butch and PegSlocum moved here fromNew Jersey and boughtover-priced four-inch subsfor $6 apiece.
Figuring they could doa lot better for theircustomers, the Slocumsopened their own shop inEast Lansing inspired bythe food shacks on theboardwalk back home.
This year, Jersey GiantSubs won the People’sChoice Award by Delta-Waverly Community Newsreaders for the best subsin the area, thanks to theSlocums’ son, Britt, whoowns two local shops, onein Grand Ledge and one on
W. Saginaw near WaverlyRoad. He also owns athird in Woodhaven nearDetroit.
Family connections andsimple, good food are hisrecipe for success.
Homemade bread, white or wheat, is the cor-nerstone of each sandwich.
“Each one of thoseglorious 16-inch beautiesis made from scratchdaily,” Slocum said. “Whatwe don’t sell, we give toFood Movers, (over 6,000pounds last year alone.)”
Slocum likes to keepthings simple: lettuce, tomatoes, onions and hotpeppers, plus a varietyof meats including lower-sodium turkey and roastbeef. He’s in the process ofgetting lower-sodium ham, too.
He’s into localcompanies, too, as muchas possible. So he stocksFrito-Lay chips made fromMichigan potatoes and hispeppers are packed inKalamazoo.
With a blue and whitetiled floor and a hugemural of an oceansidescene, the W. Saginaw shopevokes memories of theJersey boardwalk. Lookclosely at the mural, though, and you’ll seesigns that depict family.
The “Butch and PegPavilion” says one.“Annie’s Beach,” saysanother. “Luke-Ken-Mags”says a third. Anne is Britt’swife; Luke, Ken andMaggie, his children, allof whom have worked forhim. Ken, in fact, is nowrunning his own Jersey
Giant shop in Kalamazoo. The Slocum family
actually stretches prettyfar: employees become apart of it and so do thekids at St. Vincent’s Home, who get party trays gratis
every Tuesday night. The customers sort of
fit right in, too, each onethanked by Britt as theywalk out the door.
So, if you’ve nevervisited Jersey Giant, check
it out and order a #8 withsalami and ham, Britt’sbest seller.
Jersey Giant also doesparty trays starting at$39.99 that feed 12-15people.

GRAND LEDGE — JasonBarclay and Bill Atkin, directors of the Holi-han-Atkin Funeral Home, follow a long-standing tra-dition of small townfuneral directors.
“One of us is always onthe premises,” said Atkin.Making that a little easieris the fact that he andhis family live across thestreet and Barclay and hisfamily live upstairs.
But that’s just the wayit is at the home at 406Bridge St., which wasnamed the favorite funeralhome by Grand Ledgereaders in the 2011 Peo-ple’s Choice.
The business itselfdates back to the 1940s.
Bill, a native of the eastside of the Detroit area anda graduate of Wayne StateUniversity, joined one of
the previous owners, NeilHolihan, in 1988.
“I moved here andnever looked back,” hesaid. “This is home.”
As for Jason, he grewup in town and attendedschool in Grand Ledgethrough middle schoolwhen his family movedto Perry. After graduation, also from Wayne State, hemoved back to join Bill inthe business.
“It was like comingback home,” he said. “It’sbeen great.”
Serving a small towncommunity is distinct, Billsaid. “It’s a lot more con-nected. You get to knowpeople on a lot closer level. It’s a much more reward-ing experience.”
Both directors areactive in the communitygroups and service clubs.
“We’re here primarilyministering to families, butwe’re involved in all parts
of the community,” Billsaid.
Both have had expe-riences in larger townsand bigger firms, butwouldn’t tradetheir current circum-
stances.“Here it’s all included,”
said Jason. “It’s all part ofwho are.”
Holihan-Atkin FuneralHome can be reached at(517) 627-2531.

Most romantic place:The ledges
Want to get romantic? InGrand Ledge, that placewould be the ancientledges, according to GrandLedge Ledge Independentreaders for the 2011 People’sChoice. The ledges, whichgive the city its name, aremade up of rocks whichwere formed more than250 million years beforedinosaurs walked the earth, according to Eaton Countynaturalist Jackie Blanc. Inaddition, some of the plantsgrowing on and aroundthe ledges do not growanywhere else in southernMichigan due to the unique“micro climate” whichresults from the uniqueclimate control caused bythe ledges. Of course, ifthe romantic day goes bad,it could go really bad...butlet’s not think about that.FILE PHOTO/LSJ

During those years he per-formed in many capacities, suchas a road sergeant, a detectiveand running the jail.
He retired there as a luetenant

as he reached retirement age,the job as chief in Grand Ledgeopened up.
“I always wanted to be a chiefin a town just like Grand Ledge,”he said. “When I got the job Istopped playing the lottery,” hesaid.
Underhill was voted the favor-ite police officer by Grand Ledge

GRAND LEDGE - He mayown the oldest photo studioin the area. He may be 85.But don’t let that give youthe impression that ErnstFloeter is retired. He’s stillon the job, taking pictures.
“As long as I am able, why not?” he said.
He was named thefavorite photographer andhis studio, Floeter Photog-raphy, is the favorite photostudio for Grand Ledgereaders in the 2011 Peo-ple’s Choice.

“It’s still a black boxwith a hole in the front,”he said during an inter-view in his home, built in
1871 at 513 S. Bridge St.,which has also served ashis studio since 1960.
“The parlor is mystudio,” he said. The livingarea, where he and his latewife, Barbara, raised theirthree children, begins inthe next room and extendsto the kitchen and a cozy

Groesbeck Golf Course is Lansing’s choice as the favorite golf course. The 5,950-yard,par 71, 18-hole course, has been named one of the top 10 municipal courses in all ofMichigan. Tucked in the heart of Lansing, the course offers challenging shots and funfor just about every skill level. Local residents love the course. Dominic Olivett, 85, hitsa tee shot on the back nine at Groesbeck Golf Course as he plays his regular roundwith friend Jack Perrone, 80, in Lansing .. It all started with a pictureframe.
When Kathy Holcombdecided to learn how to mat andframe a picture instead of payingsomeone else to do it, she discovereda lifelong passion.
Today, she is in the eighth year ofowning Absolute Gallery where shesells a wide variety of art and offersmatting and framing service.
The gallery was the winner of thethe People’s Choice for an art galleryin Lansing.
The gallery is based on thephilosophy that every customershould be able to afford to own art, even if they don’t have a lot of money.
Holcomb curates a constantlyevolving collection of sculpture, jewelry, prints, textiles, greetingcards, and even toys.
“My nieces are ten and four, andthey know they’ll inherit the store,”says Holcomb, “so I like to havetoys and games and kids’ stuff. Plus,it’s fun!“
The items sold at the gallery aremade by artists from all over theworld, and at least 100 of the artistsshe represents are local.
One of the most popular artistsis John Balks, a 95-year-old Latvianimmigrant who lives in Kalamazoo.
In addition to selling art andframing, Holcomb branches out intomusic, offering chamber concerts atthe Gallery on Friday nights duringthe winter months.
The concerts feature world-classmusicians and food from localrestaurants..
Her pet project is an annual showof art by students with autism, towhich she devotes her time and spaceevery February and March.

The M.S.U. Dairy Storeis known for generousscoops of fresh, rich, icecream made daily at theDairy Plant next door.
“I’m a big ice creamguy, and it’s the best icecream I’ve ever had” saysthe store’s supervisor, JohnHolderbaum.
He may be a littlebiased, but the small storenestled in the lower levelof Anthony Hall attractscustomers from acrosscampus, the Lansing area, and the state. There isoften a line out the door onhot, summer days.
It is the People’s Choicefor best ice cream in Lan-sing and East Lansing.
According to Holder-baum, the Dairy Store is apopular destination for stu-
dents and faculty duringthe school year, and oftenhosts field trips where stu-dents can watch ice creamproduction in the DairyPlant.
In the summer, the storeserves more families; it’snot uncommon to seegrandparents, parents andchildren discussing theirselections over the glasscases.
The most popular flavor,by the way, is somethingcalled SesquicentennialSwirl.
Created to celebrateM.S.U.’s 150th birthday, itfeatures cake batter icecream, cake pieces and agreen frosting swirl.
If you want a littlelunch with your dessert, the Dairy Store also servesa legendary grilled cheesesandwich, hot and colddrinks and a variety ofcheese made in the DairyPlant, including bags ofcheese curds and theintriguing ChocolateCheese Confection.

Kositchek’s , a men’s clothier on North WashingtonSquare, was voted the People’s Choice for best men’sstore. The retailer celebrated its 145th birthday lastNovember and has been providing top of the lineservice and clothes for four generations. It takes theold-word approach to service and providing qualityat a range of prices. Talk about longevity amongstaff; the newest member of the store’s 15-memberstaff has been with retailer for 15 years. When Fabiano’s Candies callsitself a “family business, they aren’tkidding.
The store has been operationsince 1924, when present ownerMadeline Fabiano Blair’s father con-vinced his own father to buy a candyshop in Holland, Mich..
Since then, the business has beenrun by Blair’s father, then by Blairand her sister; and is now in thecapable hands of Blair and her sonSteven.
The sweet shop moved to Lansingin 1935, and it’s been a local fixtureever since.
The store was named the bestcandy shop in Lansing and East Lan-sing.
Candy is made in the kitchenbehind the Michigan Avenue store-front, and there are a dizzyingnumber of options including creams, nuts, truffles, cordial cherries, seafoam, Peanut Butter Melt-A-Waysand caramels. Many flavors areavailable in a sugar-free version, andthe almond toffee, Pecan Turtles and
peanut clusters are customer favor-ites.
When asked who shops at thestore, Blair says “everyone! Men buyas much chocolate as women do, andmoms come in to buy our candyfor their children because it doesn’thave preservatives in it.”
Fabiano’s Candies is knownthroughout the state, ships acrossthe country, and once made a choco-late Oldsmobile for Willard Scott.
At the end of the day, though,Blair says people love it because it’s“really just an old-fashioned candystore.”
