HUSSON EAGLES LACROSSE

2011 Season PreviewThis season the Eagles will compete in 17 regular season contests the first of which will be played on February 27th against the University of New England in Biddeford, ME. The schedule is highlighted by strong non-conference games against some of the top teams in the Little East, NESCAC, Pilgrim, Commonwealth Coast, and Great Northeast conferences. The end of the season features seven games against tough North Atlantic Conference opponents.

The first week of the season is bookended with road trips to the University of New England and Rivier College. The measuring stick for the season will come quickly for the Eagles when they take on the Nor’easters for the first time in program history. The following Saturday Husson will look to improve their overall record against Rivier to 2-0.

While spring break will offer time off from academics, it will be anything but, in terms of lacrosse, as it will be the toughest stretch of the non-conference season. Over a stretch of eight days, the Eagles will play four games; three home and one away.

The first home game of the season will be against the University of Southern Maine on March 12th at Boucher Field. Three days later the Eagles will take on Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston, hoping to even the record against the Beavers at 1-1. Husson will wrap up their spring break with two home games for the 2011 season and will be great tests for the young squad.

On March 23rd Husson will play a home game against Norwich University at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland, ME, giving their fans in the southern part of the state a chance to see the Eagles in action. Husson is looking forward to the rematch at “Fitzy” where it lost to Norwich 9-5 in 2010.

The following Saturday, Husson will host in-state rivals St. Joseph’s College at Boucher Field. That Saturday, March 26, will also be the inaugural Junior Day for the men’s lacrosse program, when prospective student-athletes are welcome to attend an Open House in the morning before the game. In the afternoon the Eagles will look to extend their win streak to three against the Monks.

The final game before the conference portion of the season will fittingly be against New England College who will join the North Atlantic Conference in 2012. The new rivalry will begin Thursday night, March 31st at 6:00pm, when Husson will play NEC under the lights in Henniker, NH.

The conference opens with tough home games against two in-state rivals; University of Maine-Farmington and Maine Maritime Academy. Husson was victorious last year in the only meeting between them and the Beavers, while the Eagles and Mariners will look to break the series tie of one game apiece when they meet in Bangor on April 5th.

April 9th and 10th the Eagles will host two of the four conference teams from Vermont on consecutive days. On Saturday the defending North Atlantic Conference Champion and proven powerhouse, Castleton Spartans, come to town. Sunday’s match will exhibit Green Mountain College in the “Clash of the Eagles.”

HUSSON EAGLES LACROSSE

The following weekend Husson will travel to Vermont for another round of back-to-back contests. Saturday, April 16th the Eagles look to make it three straight against Lyndon State, then Sunday, April 17th Husson will look to improve on their 2-1 record against Johnson State.

In the last week of the regular season the Eagles will make two trips to Waterville, ME in three days when they will play Colby College on April 21st and Thomas College on April 23rd to round out the regular season. The Eagles are looking to even the series against the Terriers of Thomas College at 2-2 and renew a conference rivalry in the last game before the conference tournament.

The 2011 schedule will be the strongest in the Husson University men’s lacrosse program’s history. After going 10-8 overall, holding a 7-2 conference mark, and making a trip to the NAC Tournament semi-finals last season, the Eagles hope that the strength of their schedule in 2011 will better prepare them for the challenging conference tournament at the end of April.

Six of the ten non-conference schools on Husson’s 2011 schedule went to their respective conference tournaments last year (Colby, Curry, MIT, NEC, St. Joseph’s, Wheaton) with two teams reaching their conference final (NEC, Wheaton).

Program History and DirectionLast year, in only the second season as a varsity sport, the Eagles experienced their first winning season finishing 10-8 overall, 7-2 in the conference, and made a trip to the NAC Semi-Finals. We offer a unique opportunity to incoming freshmen as we are a young program where you can experience a significant amount of playing time right away, and also experience success at a high level while helping build a strong program. The NAC has an automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament, awarded to the winner of the North Atlantic Conference Tournament.

The 2011 season is sure to be the most exciting in the program’s short history. After graduating no seniors and returning the 2010 leading scorer in all of NCAA Division III lacrosse, our expectations have been raised to a new level. The addition of some strong non-conference opponents will provide an added competitive edge that the Eagles hope to benefit from in the conference tournament.

HUSSON LACROSSE COACHES

Tim Murphy1st SeasonHead Men’s Lacrosse CoachDirector of the Swan Center

Email: [email protected]: 207-941-7155

Husson University is pleased to announce Tim Murphy as the head coach of men’s lacrosse. Murphy will serve as the second head coach in the history of the program and will use his experience and passion for the game to continue to build the young Eagles.

“We’re delighted to add Tim Murphy to our staff,” stated Director of Athletics Bob Reasso. “As a Maine native, Tim has strong ties to the state and will bring a great deal to our community. As a coach, Tim has the necessary enthusiasm, integrity and knowledge of the game to build upon what we feel is already a successful program. We are expecting big things for our lacrosse program and we feel that Tim is the coach that can make that vision a reality,” continued Reasso.

Murphy replaces Jeremy Mattoon and inherits a young and talented program. Last season the Eagle achieved a trip to the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) semifinal game and the program’s first winning record. In addition to their accomplishments, the 2009-10 team saw an increased strength of schedule that will persist this season. With no graduating seniors from last season and the 2009-10 NCAA Division III scoring leader, Ben Landry, the Eagles are poised for continued success.

Last season Tim Murphy served as the assistant coach at Franklin Pierce University. Murphy helped the Ravens to the most wins in program history, as well as a winning home record. Working primarily with the defense, Murphy helped the Ravens cut their goals against average from the previous season by more than six goals and the 2010 man down defensive unit was ranked second best in the Northeast 10 Conference. One defenseman was named to the Northeast 10 All-Rookie Team under Murphy’s tutelage.

Before coaching at Franklin Pierce, Murphy was an assistant coach at St. Andrews Presbyterian College. While at St. Andrews he served as the defensive coordinator in 2008 and the offensive coordinator in 2009 and coached six all-conference players and a Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year.

Previous to his time at St. Andrews, he served as the top assistant for the 2006 season at his alma mater, Merrimack College. That year Merrimack finished ranked 8th nationally and second in the Northeast 10. During that season Murphy coached three all-conference players and one All-American.

Following his career as a four-year starting attackman for the Warriors, Murphy spent the 2005 season as an assistant coach at the University of Southern Maine as well as Kennebunk High, his former high school.

“I would like to thank Mr. Reasso and the Husson University family for the opportunity to lead the Eagles men’s lacrosse program. Husson University has the perfect combination of academics and athletics for its student-athletes, and I look forward to work with them,” stated Murphy. “This is an exciting time to be part of the men’s lacrosse program at Husson University as we will continue to build on the program’s early successes and strive to match the accomplishments that the other Eagles’ programs have experienced through the years,” furthered Murphy. A native of Kennebunk, ME, Murphy lives in the Bangor area.

During his time at Merrimack the Warriors played in two Northeast 10 Conference Championships, winning the second in 2010. In the 2009 season he played on a Warrior team that made it to the Division II Final Four. The teams which Coach Foley played on were ranked as high as fourth nationally.

Coach Foley graduated from Kennebunk High School in Kenne-bunk, Maine in 2006. In his senior season, Foley was selected as a US Lacrosse High School All-American. John P. Boucher FieldThe John P. Boucher Field, home to our lacrosse program, was built in 2001 through a generous donation by Husson alumnus John Boucher ‘66.

In 2007, the field underwent a face lift. Once again, with Mr. Boucher’s generous support, the field lost its natural grass and was converted to field turf. The $650,000 renovation made the John P. Boucher Field one of the finest collegiate fields in New England.

Granite and iron fences surround the field and bench enclosures giving the complex that “old world” feel which makes it a very special place to play.

John Boucher played three sports at Husson: baseball, soccer, and golf. He has been inducted into both the Husson Sports Hall of Fame and the Husson Alumni Hall of Fame and is very involved with Husson as a member of the Board of Trustees.

A soccer coach for more than 20 years, John began his coaching career as the coach of a premier under-12 team in the Granite State Girls Soccer League. He became President of that league and during his tenure, the league grew to 1,800 players (ranging in age from 8-19) with more than 100 teams. He went on to coach girls soccer at Souhegan High School located in Amherst, New Hampshire. Under his direction, Souhegan High School Girls Soccer won eight state championships in a row. The school holds a national record for consecutive state championships with 10 in a row (two coming prior to Coach Boucher’s arrival). Boucher finished at Soughegan High School with a career record of 175 wins, 15 losses, and 5 ties.

John graduated from Husson in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. After a successful career with Exxon, he went into business for himself. He owns and operates a retail motor fuel and convenience store business located in southern New Hampshire called Stalee and JPB Fuels. He and his wife Judy are the parents of two daughters and live in New Castle, New Hampshire.

The President As a Division III institution, Husson’s programs represent the best in collegiate athletics – teamwork, competitive spirit, integrity, discipline and fun! The importance of the integration of athletics and academics in our students’ lives is evident in our approach to athletics. For all of us at Husson, developing that true competitive experience while delivering a top quality academic experience is critical to creating an integrated student experience.

Husson University student athletes rise to the occasion in the classroom and on the playing fields. They welcome the challenges of a rigorous academic curriculum and a competitive schedule with their team. We are proud of their efforts and the efforts of their coaches and the athletics staff. We are confident that the 2010-2011 season will bring more victories and more pride to our University. Bob Clark President

The Provost The academic programs at Husson University are designed to prepare students for fulfilling professional careers. Each major has been carefully designed to include a strong foundation of general education coursework combined with professional courses that connect theory to practice. Husson prioritizes quality classroom instruction and personal student attention from professors and advisors. The fact that several Husson coaches teach courses in our professional programs also demonstrates the integration and balance between academics and athletics all students can experience at Husson University. We are proud of our

expanded academic services and our new career center which provide students with the critical support needed to excel academically and explore professional opportunities.

At Husson, our students are encouraged to engage in all aspects of the college experience. We believe our athletic teams provide all students with valuable lessons related to leadership, teamwork, organization and self-discipline. These opportunities serve to enliven student participation in the Husson community and classroom.

The Athletic Director As we embark on a new academic and athletic year, there could not be a more exciting time for Husson University. I have been here for just four months, and two as Director of Athletics, but have found a very warm and engaging campus and academic environment, outstanding coaches, and highly competitive teams. Our goal for the athletic department is to take all of that to the next level and for our student-athletes to be better students and more competitive on the playing field. We are determined as a group to establish a standard both academically and athletically to which Husson, our alumni, and the greater Bangor community can continue to be proud.

I am honored to begin my first year as Husson’s Director of Athletics and look forward to working with a talented and motivated staff, and a wonderful group of student-athletes. I speak for the entire athletic department when I say that we are excited and determined to achieve our goals.
