SOUTHERN MISS2011 NOTESThe Golden Eagles enter the weekend with a 6-8 overall record, including 0-2 in C-USA play. Southern Miss dropped back-to-back five-set road match-ups last weekend with Houston (25-22, 21-25, 11-25, 25-18, 13-15) and Rice (25-20, 24-26, 25-19, 18-25, 8-15). Halie Ecker leads the Southern Miss attack with 160 kills (3.08 k/s), while Lisa Knecht has anchored the defense with 251 digs (4.74 d/s).

LAST OUTING vs. Memphis (Nov. 14, 2010)HATTIESBURG, Miss. -Altrese Hawkins led all players with 20 kills, but Memphis could not overcome 17 service errors in a 3-1 loss at Southern Miss, Sun., afternoon at Reed Green Coliseum. The loss was the third-straight for the Tigers, who fall to 15-13, 6-10 in C-USA ac-tion. Meanwhile, Southern Miss improves to 18-10 overall and 11-6 in conference play.

With the exception of the opening set, the match was a closely contested one throughout. Southern Miss routed Memphis, 25-11 in the first, but the Tigers bounced back for a 25-23 victory to even the match at 1-1. With the contest knotted at 1-all, Memphis squandered a sizeable lead in the third to fall 28-26. The Tigers never recovered, dropping the fourth and final set.

Memphis got off to a slow start, both offensively and defensively, in the opening set. The Tigers hit just .091 with seven kills, while giving up 17 kills and a .469 hitting percentage to the Golden Eagles. USM broke a 6-6 tie with scores on four-straight serves to take a 10-6 lead. Memphis was never able to make up the deficit. A kill by Altrese Hawkins make it a three-point game, but Southern Miss answered with a 5-0 rally to stretch its lead to eight, 16-8.

A five-point push by USM put Memphis behind 6-2 early on. But the Tigers regrouped and chipped away at the Golden Eagles lead until kills by Altrese Hawkins and Vesna Jelic helped them claim a 14-13 lead. After USM tied the set at 14-all, Hawkins ignited another three-point rally that put the Tiger up 17-14. Cassidy Hawkins knocked down a kill to break the tie and Hawkins landed a kill to seal the game two victory.

One of the Tigers’ 17 service errors cost them the advantage serve and gave USM a 27-26 lead. The Golden Eagles followed with a kill to take game three.

Southern Miss ran off six-straight scores to take a commanding 11-5 lead midway through the fourth set. Memphis countered with a 3-0 run and later put together another three-point rally to trim the deficit to 12-11. Jovanovic sandwiched two kills around a strike by Altrese Hawkins to even things at 16-16. Hawkins landed another kill to make it 17-all. But USM then rattled off the next three points to go up 20-17. That was all it needed to seal the match.

TULANE2011 NOTESTulane brings a 5-8 record into this weekend’s match-up, having dropped back-to-back four-set decision, to Rice (22-25, 19-25, 26-23, 22-25) and Houston (25-20, 16-25, 24-26, 14-25) on the road. Cori Martone leads the Green Wave attack with 114 kills (2.78 k/s), while Nikki Osuna has anchored the defense with 221 digs (4.60 d/s). Both Lilly Wolfe (200) and Mel Mad-elbaum (249) have over 200 assists.

LAST OUTING vs. Memphis (Nov. 12, 2010)NEW ORLEANS, La. - Memphis setter Hajnalka Molnar set 34 assists and added 10 digs for her team-leading seventh double of the year, but Tulane got a combined 25 kills from its middle blocking tandem to take the Tigers down 3-0 in Conference USA action, Friday night at Fogelman Arena.

Tulane hit a scorching .640 on 17 kills in the opening set and finished the night hitting .352.

Marija Jovanovic landed a team-high 14 kills and Altrese Hawkins connected for 12 kills and hit .391 for the Memphis offense.

The U of M hit .385 in the opening set, but was unable to an early run by the Green Wave. Tu-lane used a four-point push to break an 8-8 tie and extended the lead to 19-12 late in the set. Memphis managed to close the gap to four points three times, but did not help its cause with three service errors in a 25-19 loss.

Tulane jumped out to a 5-1 lead to start the second set and never trailed. The Wave main-tained the four-point cushion until Memphis put together a 4-1 surge midway through the set. Consecutive kills by Hawkins trimmed the Tiger’s deficit to 16-15, and Jovanovic drilled a kill to knot the set at 17-all. However, Tulane came back with scores on six of the next eight rallies to grab a comfortable 23-19 lead. Memphis forced three-straight Tulane offensive errors to get within one, at 23-22. Jelic downed a kill to make it 24-23, but Memphis could not find the equalizer as Tulane took a 2-0 lead into the intermission.

Trailing 14-10 in the third, Hawkins struck for a kill to ignite a Memphis rally that ended with a kill by Jelic for a 20-19 Tiger lead. An attacking error by the Green Wave extended the U of M lead to two-points. But Memphis was unable to maintain the advantage. Memphis held two match-point serve, but Tulane connected on kills on both occasions. An Tiger hitting error gave Tulane a 26-25 advantage, which they never relinquished.

UAB Blocks Tigers From Victory

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Despite two players with double-digit kills, the Memphis women’s volleyball team fell in three sets to UAB (17-25, 14-25, 20-25) Tuesday night to open Conference-USA play. The loss snaps a six-match Tiger win streak and gives Memphis an 11-3 overall record this season while UAB improves to 11-2.

Junior Marija Jovanovic led the way for the Tigers with 14 kills while fellow junior Altrese Hawkins recorded 10, moving her past current Tiger head coach April Jauregui and into 18th place all-time in the Memphis record books with 1,019 career putaways. Junior Vesna Jelic led the Tiger defense with 14 digs, but Memphis could not overcome 10 UAB team blocks, hitting just .104 in the match.

The Tigers jumped out to early 5-2 lead in set one, thanks in part to three kills from Hawkins, but a 7-0 Blazer run soon had Memphis on its heels trailing 9-5. Jelic finally ended UAB’s streak with a kill down the middle, leading to a back-and-forth battle on the scoreboard. However, a clean attack kept UAB in front as the Blazers hit .364 for the set with just one error to record a 25-17 victory.

Set two was tight from the start as Memphis went toe-to-toe with its conference rivals. The Blazers were finally able to eek out a 10-7 lead after a 4-1 spurt punc-tuated with a solo block. The Tigers fought back and had two chances to tie the set but were plagued by hitting errors, which allowed UAB to string together an 11-2 run. Trailing 17-10, Memphis simply didn’t have enough left in the tank to overtake the charging Blazers, falling 25-14.

Hawkins pounded home a crosscourt kill to begin set three and set the tone for the Tigers, who were soon leading 5-2. However, despite two more kills from Hawkins, UAB strung together a 7-2 run to pull ahead at 9-7. Back-to-back put-aways from Jovanovic soon knotted the score, but the Blazers continued to do just enough to stay in front, capitalizing on Memphis miscues and continuing their offensive assault to take a 17-12 lead.

However, energized by an enthusiastic crowd, the Tigers refused to go down without a fight and put together a 7-2 run capitalized by their first block of the night to tie the score at 19-19 and force a UAB timeout. But it was all Blazers out of the break as they quickly put away six of the next seven points to end the Tiger comeback and the match with a 25-20 win.

Memphis Volleyball Sweeps Marshall In C-USA Action

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A strong defensive presence helped the Memphis volleyball team improve to 2-1 in Conference USA play and 13-3 overall with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-21) win over Marshall on Sunday.

The Tigers held Marshall to .227 hitting thanks in part to five team blocks and 40 digs. Junior Vesna Jelic posted a team-high 10 digs while junior Marija Jovanovic and freshman Aleksandra Petronijevic each tallied nine. Junior Altrese Hawkins paced the Tiger offense with 14 kills. Senior Cameron Yoho led the Thundering Herd with a double-double of 11 digs and 10 kills.

Memphis got off to a strong start in set one with the first three points going to the home team. Hawkins had two early kills to help the Tigers jump out to a 7-3 lead. However, Marshall scored five of the next seven points after finding its offensive rhythm and was finally able to tie the score at 11-11. But the Tiger defense came up big with a powerful block from Lauren Hawkins and Hajnalka Molnar to prevent the Herd from taking the lead. The two teams stayed tight from there with Memphis maintaining a slight advantage but feeling constant pressure from the Herd. That pressure finally paid off for Marshall as it took the lead 19-18 after three straight kills. But the advantage was short-lived as Altrese Hawkins took over the set and powered home four kills in the final seven points to give Memphis the 25-22 win. Hawkins finished the frame with seven kills on .455 hit-ting.

Set two began the same way as set one, with an early Memphis lead and a pow-erful attack led by Hawkins. But Marshall quickly got into sync and scored three straight points to go up 5-4. After falling behind, 9-6, the Tigers began making their move, putting together a 5-1 run featuring two aces to regain the lead at 11-10. The Herd tied the score once and had several other opportunities to even the tally, but Memphis stayed strong and took the set, 25-21.

With the Tigers sensing victory and Marshall trying to stay in the match, set three was tight from the opening serve. The Herd used a 3-0 spurt to go in front 9-6 only to see Memphis respond with a 7-1 run to build a 13-10 lead. The advantage quickly became 18-12 as the Tigers stayed on the attack, eventually scoring the 25-21 victory.
