UTEP2011 NOTESMemphis and UTEP each bring 3-2 conference records into the back-to-back games this week-end. The Miners have won three-straight games over SMU, Marshall and East Carolina after dropping their first two C-USA matches to UCF and Tulsa. Overall, UTEP is 13-5 on the season.

The Miners are led by three powerful attackers. Jeane Horton (197), Xitali Herrera (199) and Bridget Logan (208) lead UTEP in kills, while Malia Patterson leads the squad with 657 assists. Stephanie Figueroa has anchored the back row with 322 digs, while Herrera (156), Marie-Therese Joyce (155), Patterson (146) and Victoria Valencia each have more than 100 digs.

LAST OUTING vs. Memphis (Nov. 21, 2010)MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis setter Hajnalka Molnar posted her team-leading eighth double-double with 32 assists and 10 digs, and the Tigers served up 11 aces to cruise to a sweep of UTEP on Senior Day, Sunday afternoon at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.

For the second consecutive match, the Tigers got off to a slow start in the opening set and fell behind 7-1. But Memphis weather UTEP’s initial surge and put together a five-point rally on the strength of kills by Cassidy Hawkins, Jovanovic and two from Kostic to get back into the set, 11-9. A service error stopped the run, but didn’t slow the Tigers momentum as they strung to-gether a four-point push to claim a 13-12 lead. One of seven first-set kills by Jovanovic evened the score at 12-all and an attack error by UTEP turned the lead over to the Tigers, 13-12. Behind the strong serve of Altrese Hawkins, the Tigers took control of the set by scoring seven-straight to go up 24-17. UTEP held off two set-point serves, but could not deny the Tigers a third shot at closing the set out as Molnar dumped in a kill to clinch the 25-19. Memphis hit a scorching .433 on 16 kills in the first. Jovanovic hit .545 with seven kills, WHILE Molnar set 13 assists.

In a closely contested second set, Memphis again used the serve of Altrese Hawkins to gain control of the set. A Miners ball-handling error broke a 13-13 tie and set the Tigers on a 6-0 run. Hawkins had three of her five aces in the rally that saw the U of M take a 19-13 advan-tage. That was all they needed en route to a 25-19 victory and a 2-0 lead heading into the intermission.

Memphis took early control of the finale, jumping out to an 11-5 lead. However, UTEP respond-ed with an 8-1 surge to take a one-point lead, 13-12. The Miners extended their cushion to 17-13 and threatened extending the match to a fourth set. But the Tigers answered by scoring on the next seven serves to turn the four-point deficit to a one-point advantage. Memphis got aces from Jovanovic and Katlin Inglish on its way to taking the lead. Altrese Hawkins broke a 19-19 tie with a kill that ignited the Tiger’s final push to clinch the sweep. She followed with an ace and a back row kill to put Memphis up 22-19. UTEP landed a kill to trim the Tiger lead to 22-20, but consecutive aces by Molnar salted the match away.

2010 in ReviewCoach Jauregui and the Tigers welcomed in nine newcomers from across the globe in 2010 and had a successful campaign while getting everyone adjusted to the Memphis way of doing things. The Tigers posted a 16-16 record, including a 9-3 non-confer-ence mark and won both the Memphis Tiger Invitational and Belmont Invitational pre-season tournaments. Altrese Hawkins was named to Conference USA’s All-First Team in addition to being a second-team performer in COBRA Magazine’s 2010 postsea-son awards. Senior Christine Bach accompanied Hawkins on the C-USA All-Academic Team (the second-straight selection for Hawkins and fourth-straight for Bach), while the Tigers earned AVCA’s Academic Team Award for the eighth consecutive season. Bach was also named to ESPN’s All-Academic District IV First Team, while Hawkins earned AVCA Honorable Mention All-America honors.

Like a HawkAltrese Hawkins continues to rake in the honors, as the redshirt-junior was named to Conference USA’s All-Preseason team. The selection comes after her selection to C-USA’s All-Conference First Team following the completion of the 2010 season. Hawkins also earned All-Freshman honors after her first season in 2009. Hawkins was selected to COBRA Magazine’s All-Preseason First Team. She earns the award after a stellar sophomore season in which she downed 483 kills and held a team-best hitting percentage of .305. She was one of only two Tigers to compete in all 122 sets during the 2010 campaign, highlighted by a 29-kill performance against Southern Miss on Oct. 29. The 29-kill showing ranks eighth in the Memphis record book for the most kills in a single match. Hawkins lived up to the hype, as she was named the Memphis Invitational’s MVP and also tabbed C-USA’s Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Aug. 29.

800-win MilestoneThe University of Memphis Volleyball program, entering its 40th year in 2011, col-lected its 800th program victory with a 3-1 victory over SEMO on August 26. The Tigers are currently 28thon the all-time NCAA Volleyball wins list.

This is Your Captain SpeakingAltrese Hawkins and Hajnalka Molnar have been anointed the 2011 captains for Tiger Volleyball. Each returns after standout campaigns in 2011. Hawkins was named a member of the 2011 C-USA All-Preseason Team in addition to being tabbed a First Team performer by COBRA Magazine. The junior downed 483 kills and had a team-best .305 hitting percentage in 2010.

Fresh FacesThe Tigers welcome Lauren Hawkins (Rowlett, Texas), Alexis Wesley (Silverdale, Wash.) and Veronica Zimmerman (Toledo, Ohio) to the program this season.

Juniors RuleWith no seniors of the 2011 roster, the Tigers will rely heavily on their talented junior class of Altrese Hawkins, Cassidy Hawkins, Vesna Jelic, Marija Jovanovic, Maja Kostic, and Hajnalka Molnar, which includes five starters from last year’s squad.

Memphis Drops C-USA Road Opener to Southern Miss, 3-0HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Despite a double-double effort from Marija Jovanovic and 14 kills by Altrese Hawkins, the University of Memphis volleyball team (13-3, 2-2) dropped a 3-0 decision (18-25;23-25;18-25) to Southern Miss (7-8; 1-2) in its Conference USA road opener.

Southern Miss jumped out to a 5-2 advantage early, but a kill by A. Hawkins and an error by the Golden Eagles allowed Memphis to claw back to make it 5-4. Southern Miss then went on a 5-1 run to make it 10-5 and force Memphis to call a timeout.

The Tigers fought back to close the gap 13-9, but the Golden Eagles attack, which registered 18 kills in the set, proved to be too much. Southern Miss went on to close the set out 25-18. Hawkins led the Tigers in the set with three kills, while Jovanovic, Lauren Hawkins and Katie Meyer all registered two.

Memphis came out strong in the second set, opening up a 4-1 advantage behind two kills from A. Hawkins and the first career solo block by Alexis Wesley. The Tigers extended that lead to 7-2 behind two errors from Southern Miss and a kill by Jovanovic.

The Golden Eagles responded with a 5-1 run to make it 8-7 before Memphis went on a 6-2 run to make it 13-9 and force Southern Miss to take a timeout. The Golden Eagles tied the set for the first time after a block netted the score at 15 and would take their first lead on a kill that made it 18-17. The two teams traded points before Southern Miss took the lead for good 22-21.

With Memphis trailing in the set 24-21, the Golden Eagles made two-straight errors to make the score 24-23. Southern Miss put it away on the next point, however, taking the set 25-23. A. Hawkins led the Tigers in the second set with eight kills in 17 attempts, while Hajnalka Molnar contributed 14 assists.

The third set proved to be a battle that featured 14 ties and two lead changes. Southern Miss took an early 3-1 lead, but back-to-back kills from Jovanovic net-ted the set at three.

The Tigers used a kill from L. Hawkins and an ace from Vesna Jelic to tie the set at 15. A kill from A. Hawkins again netted the set at 16 before back-to-back blocks from Southern Miss put the Golden Eagles ahead for good. Leading 18-16, Southern Miss closed the set on a 7-2 run to win the set 25-18 and the match, 3-0.

Tigers Down Tulane in Straight Sets

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The University of Memphis Volleyball team defeated Tulane in straight sets (25-19;25-19;25-17) behind a double-double of 34 assists and 11 digs from Hajnalka Molnar. The Tigers improve to 14-4 and 3-2 in Conference USA play, while Tulane falls to 5-10 and 0-4 in C-USA.

Tulane opened the first set strong, going up 3-1 before Memphis settled into its routine. The Tigers fought back to tie the set at five behind back-to-back kills from Vesna Jelic and Marija Jovanovic. The teams traded points before Memphis took the lead for good at 10-9 after a service ace from Hajnalka Molnar.

Two kills from Jelic and an ace from Altrese Hawkins pushed the Tigers lead to 13-10 and powered an 8-2 run that gave Memphis a 17-11 advantage. Tulane called timeout and regrouped, however, going on a 5-1 run to make it 18-16 and force Memphis to call timeout. The Tigers responded with a 5-0 run of their own to make it 23-16, and a powerful kill from A. Hawkins sealed the set for Memphis, 25-19.

Set two began much like the first, as the Green Wave opened up a 3-2 advantage behind attack errors from the Tigers. Tulane maintained its advantage for the first half of the set and led 14-13 after an attack error on A. Hawkins, but back-to-back kills by Jovanovic gave the Tigers their first lead of the set at 15-14.

Memphis extended its 3-0 run into a 7-1 rally and extended its advantage to 20-15 Two Tulane errors and an ace from Lauren Hawkins allowed Memphis to take a commanding 23-17 advantage, and the 12th kill by Altrese Hawkins put the set away, 25-19. A. Hawkins led the Tigers in the second set with seven kills while hitting at a .500 clip. Molnar registered 13 assists in the set, while Aleksandra Petronijevic came up with five digs on the back row.

The Tigers jumped out to an early 6-2 lead behind a kill from L. Hawkins, blocks from A. Hawkins and Katie Meyer, and a service error from Molnar. Memphis extended that advantage to 8-4 after a kill down the middle from Katie Meyer and a service ace from A. Hawkins. Three-straight attack errors by Tulane gave the Tigers a 12-6 lead, and Memphis would never lead by less than four points for the remainder of the set. Kills from Meyer and A. Hawkins clinched the set, 25-17 and the match, 3-0.

CONFERENCE USA

After marking its 15-year milestone during the 2009-10 season, Confer-ence USA is still going strong. From the beginning, dedication to excel-lence has been the league’s guid-ing principle and remains today a common thread for a promising fu-ture. C-USA is home to 12 nationally prominent, tradition-rich members in East Carolina, Houston, Marshall, Memphis, Rice, SMU, Southern Miss, Tulane, Tulsa, UAB, UCF and UTEP. This combination enhances men’s and women’s programs that are immersed in athletic success and academic prowess. Together, we are committed to excellence, integrity and leader-ship in athletics, academics and in our communities. All C-USA institutions sponsor Divi-sion I-A football, along with several other men’s and women’s athletic pro-grams, many of which compete regu-larly for NCAA Championships. C-USA sponsors competition in 20 sports - nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and indoor and outdoor track and field) and 11 for women (bas-ketball, cross country, golf, rowing, softball, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field and volleyball). The league sponsors numerous academic awards, including the Com-missioner’s Honor Roll and the Com-missioner’s Academic Medal, indica-tive of outstanding achievement in the classroom. C-USA annually awards 12 post-graduate scholarships, along with the Sport Academic Award, Scholar Athletes of the Year and the Institu-tional Academic Excellence Award. Conference USA also added a Spirit of Service Award, recognizing stu-dent-athletes three times a year for a combination of significant community service efforts, good academic stand-ing and participation in their elected sport.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEKKIRIANA HIRINI, UAB // 6-1, RS FR., MB // TAURANGA, NEW ZEALAND Hirini was a major factor off the bench for the Blazers at the middle blocker position, as the New Zealand native averaged an impressive 2.60 blocks per set for the weekend. Two days after posting five blocks, two solo, in a five-set victory at Tulane, Hirini made even more of an impact on the road at Southern Miss. Of the eight blocks tallied, three were solos, which she totaled in just two sets of game action.
