(Sept. 15, 2006) - Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Bury posted 10 kills and 15 digs to lead Memphis to a sweep of Central Arkansas, and Ashley Liford downed a match-high 18 kills and added 11 digs to guide the Tigers past Murray State, 3-0 in the nightcap. Memphis improves to 11-1 with the pair of wins.

The second match of today’s double dip pitted a pair of one-loss teams against each other after both teams earned sweeps in their early matches. Memphis emerged as the stronger of the two behind Liford’s double-double and 18 kills from Bury. Setter Laura Côté dished out a match-high 49 assists.

Christen Clayton led Memphis with 15 digs, while Shelby Burton contributed with six blocks. Bury fell one dig shy of a double-double with nine digs.

Memphis raced out to a 30-24 win in game one, but struggled in game two. Trailing 29-27, the Tiger staged a furious comeback and scored the game’s final four points to take a 2-0 lead into the break.

The Memphis defense held MSU to a .140 attacking clip in the final set to clinch the victory.

Bach was also named to ESPN’s All-Academic District IV First Team, while Hawkins earned AVCA Honorable Mention All-America honors.

Like a HawkAltrese Hawkins continues to rake in the honors, as the redshirt-junior was named to Conference USA’s All-Preseason team. The selection comes after her selection to C-USA’s All-Conference First Team following the completion of the 2010 season. Hawkins also earned All-Freshman honors after her first season in 2009. Hawkins was selected to COBRA Magazine’s All-Preseason First Team. She earns the award after a stellar sopho-more season in which she downed 483 kills and held a team-best hitting percentage of .305. Memphis fell behind early in the first set, trailing 12-8 before battling back to take the lead 19-18 on a kill from Altrese Hawkins. The Lions came out firing in the third set, going up 10-5 early and extending the lead to 14-7. Memphis battled back to within five when a service ace from Aleksandra Petronijevic narrowed the deficit to 19-15. Columbia would then call a timeout and regroup, however and finish out the set with a 25-17 win.

Columbia started the fourth set hitting a perfect 1.000 for the first 14 points and opened up a 10-4 lead. The Lions then pushed the lead to 17-11 before three-straight kills from A. Hawkins narrowed the gap to 17-14. The Lions then went on a 6-3 run to extend the lead to 23-17, but Memphis refused to go away easily. The Tigers scored four consecutive points before a service error from Vesna Jelic gave the Lions a 24-20 advantage.

CONFERENCE USA

After marking its 15-year milestone during the 2009-10 season, Confer-ence USA is still going strong. From the beginning, dedication to excel-lence has been the league’s guid-ing principle and remains today a common thread for a promising fu-ture. C-USA is home to 12 nationally prominent, tradition-rich members in East Carolina, Houston, Marshall, Memphis, Rice, SMU, Southern Miss, Tulane, Tulsa, UAB, UCF and UTEP. This combination enhances men’s and women’s programs that are immersed in athletic success and academic prowess. Together, we are committed to excellence, integrity and leader-ship in athletics, academics and in our communities. All C-USA institutions sponsor Divi-sion I-A football, along with several other men’s and women’s athletic pro-grams, many of which compete regu-larly for NCAA Championships. C-USA sponsors competition in 20 sports - nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and indoor and outdoor track and field) and 11 for women (bas-ketball, cross country, golf, rowing, softball, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field and volleyball). The league sponsors numerous academic awards, including the Com-missioner’s Honor Roll and the Com-missioner’s Academic Medal, indica-tive of outstanding achievement in the classroom. C-USA annually awards 12 post-graduate scholarships, along with the Sport Academic Award, Scholar Athletes of the Year and the Institu-tional Academic Excellence Award. Conference USA also added a Spirit of Service Award, recognizing stu-dent-athletes three times a year for a combination of significant community service efforts, good academic stand-ing and participation in their elected sport.
