Win the Sunshine State Conference, winthe South Region, win the NationalChampionship. These are the goalsyear in and year out for head coachMike Perez and the Lynn Universitywomen’s tennis program. And in 2011, itis not any different. After dominating theITA South Region in the fall with six play-ers in the Elite Eight and an all-LynnFinal Four, the Fighting Knights have as-sembled an extremely deep team withan NCAA-high six players ranked in thetop-22 in the nation.

“Although winning the national champi-onship is our ultimate goal every year, you cannot look past your first goals:they build on each other,” said Perez.

The Fighting Knights feature a senior-laden team with four seniors but are alsobuilding for the future with five talentedfreshmen on the roster.

Heading the senior class are MagdalenaEkert and Eleonora Iannozzi as well asJessica Yanoff and newcomer IsabellRaich.

After finishing with an 18-6 record whileearning All-America honors in both sin-gles and doubles in 2010, Ekert willlikely see the most time at No. 1 as asenior. The Gdansk, Poland, native alsohad a tremendous Fall advancing to theFinal Four in singles while falling in theDoubles Championship with Raich.

“Maggie has had an incredible career atLynn with a lot of experience playing intwo national championship finals andwas a point away from a third. She hada great fall season and if she believes inherself this will be her year to shine.”

Iannozzi continued in the fall right whereshe left off in the Spring. Closing out2010 on a 15-match winning streak with

a 24-1 overall record, the Italian won theSouth Regional to move to the SmallCollege National Championships.

“With Eli, it will be a matter of consis-tency and confidence as she had a goodcareer and an even better fall. We willalso be expecting her to take a leader-ship role with this group since she isteam captain this year.”

Like Iannozzi, Yanoff also carried hermomentum from the end of 2010 into thefall. After winning her final eightmatches in 2010 and finishing with a 20-4 overall mark, Yanoff fell to Iannozzi inthe South Regional Championship.

“This is the best I have ever seen Jes-sica play but she has always shown thepotential to do so. She had an amazingfall and has a terrific hard-court game.”

A Third Team All-Conference USA selec-tion as a junior at Marshall University,Raich went 24-12 in singles and 20-12 indoubles primarily out of the third posi-tion. A native of Klaus, Austria, Raichalso advanced to the Final Four in theSouth Regional.

“Izzy [Isabell Raich] has had three yearsof Division I experience playing at Mar-shall University and her game has evenimproved since she stepped onto cam-pus in the fall. She is a tremendous ath-lete with incredible fitness and I expectgreat things from her this spring.”

Freshmen Ioana Ivan (Snagon, Roma-nia) and Andrea Berkova (Jihlava,Czech Republic) lead a solid group ofnewcomers after having great successoverseas.

“Ioana and Andrea both have tremen-dous skill and have a lot of credentialsand experience as Junior players. Like

most international competitors, the keywill be working on a faster court thanthey are used to.”

Adding depth to the Fighting Knights thisseason will be redshirt freshman RoxanaAlexandru as well as first-year playersAlexandra Vukadinovic and Sydney Put-nam.

Once again, the Fighting Knights willtake on one of, if not the most difficultschedules in the country. Among the op-ponents are seven programs that areranked in the preseason Top-10, includ-ing No. 1 Armstrong Atlantic in the regu-lar season finale at the Perper TennisComplex on April 9.

“In order to see where you are and whatlevel you need to be at, you need to playagainst the very best,” said Perez.

The SSC is consistently the best tennisconference in the nation and once againwill prove a stiff test for the FightingKnights with Barry, Rollins and FloridaSouthern all nationally-ranked.

When not facing the top teams in theNCAA, the Blue & White will take onFresno-Pacific and Auburn-Montgomerywho are ranked No. 1 and 2 in the NAIA.

The Fighting Knights open the seasonon the road against conference oppo-nents Saint Leo and Florida Southern onFebruary 5-6 while the home opener isscheduled for February 9 against North-wood (Fla.).

SEASON OUTLOOK

Season after season, Lynn University men's and women'stennis coach Mike Perez has shown he is able to do one thing:produce champions. Now in his 22nd season in Boca Raton, the man with seven national titles to his credit has shown con-sistency in not only producing champions on the tennis courts, but also in the classroom. Academically, Perez's teams rank ator near the top of the LU Athletic Department's grade point av-erage listing year after year. Perez's tennis programs have become synonymous with suc-cess with nearly 800 career wins. Boasting an overall recordof 778-202 (.794), Perez has notched 445 victories with thewomen and 333 on the men's side. Under his tutelage, thenumber of honors is downright staggering as 49 different All-America players have donned the Blue and White for a total of132 separate honors.

This past season, the women’s team won its 14th consecutiveRegional Championship and got as far as the NCAA Semifi-nals. The trip to the Final Four was the fifth-straight for Perezand the Blue & White as they fell to NCAA Runner-Up BYU-Hawaii. For the first time since 2008, under the tutelage ofPerez, two Fighting Knights, Magdalene Ekert and KaterinaJiskrova earned All-America honors in both singles and dou-bles. The duo, as well as Eleonora Iannozzi, all received SSCFirst-Team honors in singles, the first time that has happenedsince 2000.

On the men’s side, Perez led Lynn University to its third-straight 19-win season. Like the women, three FightingKnights: Tomas Racak, Alessandro Sarra and Willi Wolfer, allreceived SSC First-Team honors in singles. Wolfer also be-came just the second Lynn player to win the SSC Freshman ofthe Year award. The trio of men also all-received All-Americahonors in either singles or doubles, the sixth-straight year LUhad three All-America selections.

Reaching the NCAA finals with the women’s squad for the sec-ond consecutive season and seventh time overall in 2009, theFighting Knights kicked off the season on a 28-match winning-streak. Perez’s Blue and White squad took down a pair of top-ranked teams, Armstrong Atlantic State and BYU-Hawai’i, enroute to setting the program record for wins. Going undefeatedin league play and winning a record ninth Sunshine State Con-ference championship, Perez was recognized for his efforts bybeing named SSC Coach of the Year an unprecedented eighthtime and tabbed South Region Coach of the Year.

On the men’s side, the 2009 Knights put together their bestSunshine State Conference season with its first undefeatedleague season. Although bowing out in the NCAA quarterfi-nals, the Blue and White finished the season ranked third inthe country while senior Julien Carsuzaa was named SSCPlayer of the Year, South Region and National Senior Player ofthe Year while breaking the school records for both singles anddoubles victories.

The 2008 Fighting Knights women’s squad reached the NCAAfinals for the sixth time before bowing out to Armstrong AtlanticState. Lynn won 26 matches while sweeping through Sun-shine State Conference player for yet another undefeated sea-son and an eighth league championship.

In 2007, Perez brought the Fighting Knights to new heights bysetting program-bests in victories for the men with 24 and athen-best 25 with the women. The men's squad earned its firstnational title with a 5-1 victory over defending champions Val-dosta State, the school that knocked off the Knights in the titlematch the year before.

Winning the Sunshine State Conference title on the men's andwomen's side in 2007, Lynn became the first school to winback-to-back titles with both teams in league history. Perezwas named SSC Coach of the Year for both squads, earninghim a record sixth time with the women and the second con-secutive with the men.

Honors abounded for Perez in 2007 as he picked up ITASoutheast Region Coach of the Year accolades with the menand women. He was also named the Division II NationalCoach of the Year for the men, the first time he has won theaward in the NCAA.

Also impressive was Perez's inclusion as Top Coach on theFirst 25 Years on the SSC's Women's Tennis Silver Anniver-sary Team. Lynn represented a league-best five players, in-cluding Top Player Monika Mastalirova, despite only being in the conference for eight years.

6

Page 9: 2011 Lynn University Women's Tennis Media Guide

During the 2006 fall season, Lynn swept the ITA Southeast Re-gion Championships on both sides. The doubles pair of Den-nis Riegraf and Julien Carsuzaa also won the ITA ‘Super Bowl'of Small College Tennis, a first for Perez, and won their firstround match at the ITA National Indoor Championships againstthe defending Division I champions from Pepperdine Univer-sity. Carsuzaa would again win the Division II doubles title twoyears later as a senior in 2008, teaming with sophomoreAlessandro Sarra to achieve the feat.

Along with the women's program's six national titles, Perezalso boasts the third best all-time record in NCAA Division IIpostseason tournament play for active schools with a 60-13(.822) record. Always clutch on the big stage, his teams havemade 14 consecutive championship appearances and 13 finalfours since becoming a D-II institution in the 1997 season.Only traditional powerhouses Armstrong Atlantic and BYU-Hawaii have better winning percentages, but both have lostNational Titles at the hands of Perez's Fighting Knights.

On the men's side, Perez's squads have reached the postsea-son 12 times since beginning NCAA play in 1997. The Knights'26-11 (.703) overall championship record is sixth best all-time

and the Blue and White are 17-4 in the past five seasons, reaching the final match both 2006 and 2007.

An accomplished high school and collegiate baseball player inArizona, Perez moved to Florida in 1988 and joined the LU ath-letics family as an assistant tennis coach. One season later heassumed the reigns of both the men's and women's program, putting into motion what has proved to be a tradition of suc-cess, excellence and domination. His first women's nationaltitle came in 1993 as the Knights captured the NAIA NationalChampionship. The team would win it all again at the NAIAlevel in 1995 and 1996 before the school decided to move tothe NCAA and eventually the Sunshine State Conference.

The move up to the NCAA did little to slow down the successof the women's program as the Knights took home the hard-ware in 1997 and 1998, both times at the expense of Arm-strong Atlantic. Perez won four national titles in succession, afeat normally reserved for coaching legends. Lynn added an-other national title in 2001 with a 5-3 victory over BYU-Hawaii,the Seasiders' first Division II loss after a 103-match winningstreak. As a Division II program, the Knights also have four ofrunner-up finishes and 12 semifinals appearances.

For his efforts on the women's side, the 1987 University of Ari-zona political science graduate was named NAIA NationalCoach of the Year in 1993, 1995 and 1996. The SunshineState Conference bestowed the same honor upon him in 1998,1999, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and most recently the 2008 sea-son. The Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame named himtheir Coach of the Year in 2002, while the NAIA named himCoach of the Decade for the 90's.

Perez's coaching acumen isn't just confined to the women'sprogram as his men's team has been a player on the nationalscene as well. The 1993 NAIA District 25 Coach of the Year,Perez's teams finished in the national top 10 every seasonfrom 1993-1997. Their success didn't stop once LU decided tomake the move to the NCAA ranks, as the Knights have fin-ished in the Top-25 every season.

Michael Steven Perez was born on Sept. 17, 1965 in New-burgh, N.Y. He has been married to the former Melissa Nacesince July of 1998. They are the proud parents of MadelineElizabeth who was born on Sept. 13, 2001. The Perez familycurrently resides in Lake Worth. Away from tennis, Perez is al-ways working to lower his handicap around the greens andalso enjoys maintaining his garden and engaging in lively politi-cal discussions.

The epicenter of the Fighting Knights Athletics Department, the Count & Countess de HoernleSports and Cultural Center sits in the heart of the Lynn University campus. Completed in 1993, thecenter is the home court for the Lynn University volleyball and men’s and women’s basketballprograms. Lynn’s 18 National Championship banners hang proudly from its rafters.

Housing four team locker rooms and one officials locker room, two athletic training rooms andlaundry facilities, the de Hoernle Center also contains offices for all of Lynn’s coaches andadministrators. During volleyball and basketball games fans can relax in the retractable chairbackseating on one side or sit close to the teams on the retractable bleachers. The combined seatingcapacity is 1,000.

The front lobby is home to the Michael & Julie Chadwick Wall of National Champions, a spacethat has plaques recognizing the Fighting Knights National Championship teams, and six trophycases which hold the many NAIA and NCAA individual and team honors of Lynn’s 11 programs. The de Hoernle Center is not just used for athletics; the gym floor is converted at the start of eachacademic year for Orientation and at each year's conclusion for Commencement.

A new addition was welcomed into lobby of the de Hoernle Center in 2008, the Athletic Hall ofFame. Thirty former student-athletes and administrators are honored on the wall for theiraccomplishments while with the Blue and White.

The first basketball game held on the floor came on Dec. 28, 1993, as the LU women downedMichigan-Dearborn 99-72.
