ATHLETICS POINTS OF PRIDE

Page 6: 2011 Lynn University Softball Media Guide

The 2011 edition of the Lynn Universitysoftball team returns its top two hitters andpitchers but after that, a virtually all newsupporting cast will have to contribute forthe Fighting Knights to return to the NCAATournament. Among the returners is sen-ior All-American Brittany Gross, who hadarguably the greatest offensive season inLynn history as a junior, while newcomerMandi Brown will add some much neededspeed, power and defense to the Blue &White’s lineup.

“We possess a lot of speed from top tobottom and should be much better defen-sively this year,” said third-year headcoach Mandy Harris. “With more depththan in recent years, we have a lot of com-binations that we can use and that is reallyexciting as a coach.”

OutfieldA pair of seniors, Brittany Gross and Kat-rina Lavadan, will anchor the outfield withfellow senior Jordan Angel and freshmanMegan Mayfield fighting it out for the finalspot.

An All-American as a junior, Gross will setthe table offensively for the Fighting

Knights at the leadoff spot. Last seasonshe hit a program-record .435 with 83base hits, both of which led the SSC.

“Brittany has been a sparkplug for us of-fensively the last three years. She hasgreat speed and tracks down everythinghit to her in right field.”

Lavadan should see the bulk of her timehitting just behind Gross in order to ad-vance the runner. Last season she didjust that leading the Knights with 14 sacri-fice hits, but she also hit for power and av-erage batting .378 with a team-high .451slugging percentage.

“Trina had a great year last season com-ing off an injury. She is fully healthy nowand we are excited to have her back incenterfield and hitting behind Brittany.”

Mayfield comes to Boca after earningthree letters at Jensen Beach HighSchool, the same school that producedGross. As a senior, the lefty slapper ledthe Falcons to the State Semifinals.

“Megan will see most of the time in leftfield but she has the ability to play rightfield as well. She is very quick and willlearn a lot from Brittany and Trina on thebase paths and in the outfield.

A multipurpose player, Angel can playevery position on the diamond except inthe battery. Last season, Jordan was con-sistent with the bat and showed good platediscipline hitting .288 and drawing 18walks.

“Jordan allows us to have many combina-tions defensively with her versatility. Sheis a great leader on the field, does every-thing that she is asked and is just a joy tocoach.”

InfieldThe Fighting Knights will feature an en-tirely different infield from last season butshould be much better defensively. Up themiddle, junior transfer Mandi Brown willlead the Blue & White at shortstop withfreshman Anne Marie Van Casteren atsecond.

A transfer out of Santa Fe CC, Brown wasa pain for opposing pitchers, hitting .324

and earning All-Mid Florida Conferencehonors as a sophomore. She will hit pri-marily from the third spot and should get alot of RBI opportunities batting behindGross and Lavadan.

“Mandi comes from a great winning tradi-tion at Santa Fe and knows what it takesto be successful at this level. She fieldseverything that is hit in her direction, has agood eye at the plate and puts the ball inplay.”

Another local product out of Palm BeachCentral High School, Van Casteren batted.406 as a senior and was named an All-County selection. For her efforts, she wasalso picked to play in the Florida StateSenior All-Star Game.

“Anne Marie had a great fall season mak-ing the transition from third to secondbase. She has good speed and with herimprovement in the weight room sheshould be able to provide some pop withthe bat.”

Kasey Murray will handle the hot cornerwhile Callie Darlin will be at first basewhen they are not in the circle.

Murray is another newcomer that can hitfor both power and average. In her seniorseason at Land O’Lakes, the right-handerbatted .390 and hit a home run in the ASANational Championship Game.

Freshmen Marcella Carrozza and CarisaCook can play both corner infield posi-tions as well and should see time when ei-ther Murray or Darlin are pitching.

PitchersAfter being thrown into the fire last seasonas a freshman, Darlin will lead a trio ofpitchers for the Fighting Knights as asophomore. Returning from injury insidethe circle will also be redshirt junior Mari-anne Johnson while Murray will also hurlfor the Blue & White.

Darlin was the ace of the Fighting Knights’

staff last season with a 2.37 ERA in 180.1innings. The flamethrower completed 22of 26 of her starts and posted fourshutouts.

“Callie is super competitive and has im-proved significantly since stepping ontocampus. With injuries last season, shepitched in several big games for us andthat experience will only help her thisyear.”

More of a control artist, Johnson madeone appearance before a season-endinginjury but threw in 91 innings as a sopho-more in 2009.

“We are so glad to get Marianne backfrom injury and it is great to have herhealthy. She had several good games be-fore going down and her experience willbenefit our young pitching staff.”

A strikeout pitcher for the Fighting Gators,Murray fanned 160 batters in just 126 in-nings of work and earned All-Conferencehonors. Murray features a lot of spin onall of her pitches but also has the ability tothrow one by hitters.

“Like Callie, Kasey is very versatile andshe comes from a great summer program, the Tampa Mustangs, who won the clubNational Championship last year. Sheknows how to win and that will help us getto the next level as a team.”

CatcherProviding some power and leadership be-hind the plate will be junior-transferDanielle O’Rourke. Out of Endicott, N.Y.,O’Rourke led Tompkins Cortland CC to itsfirst-ever National Championship in 2009.That season, she was named a JUCOFirst-Team All-American with four homeruns and 33 RBIs while hitting .388.O’Rourke holds the TC3 record for careerhome runs, RBI and walks.

“Dani is very solid behind the plate andthe pitchers really like throwing to her.She also blocks really well and has a

strong throwing arm as she threw outevery base runner in the fall.”

SchedulePrior to going through the rigors of atough SSC schedule, Lynn will take onseveral of the nation’s top teams, includ-ing North Georgia who was ranked No. 1in the final regular season poll.

“We made this schedule on purpose inorder to prepare us for our conference, which is among the toughest in the coun-try. Playing teams like North Georgia, who advanced to the Elite Eight last year, will be a great test for our team before en-tering SSC play.”

The Knights open the season at PalmBeach Atlantic on Feb. 9 before headingnorth for the Hughston Sports Clinic Clas-sic in Columbus, Ga. from February 11-13. There the Knights take on the Saintstwice, as well as Ohio Valley and Colum-bus State.

The epicenter of the Fighting Knights Athletics Department, the Count & Countess de HoernleSports and Cultural Center sits in the heart of the Lynn University campus. Completed in 1993, thecenter is the home court for the Lynn University volleyball and men’s and women’s basketballprograms. Lynn’s 18 National Championship banners hang proudly from its rafters.

Housing four team locker rooms and one officials locker room, two athletic training rooms andlaundry facilities, the de Hoernle Center also contains offices for all of Lynn’s coaches andadministrators.
