For almost 20 years, Island Harvest has served as the bridge between those with excess food and those who need it. At a time of greater need it is so important to close this gap and ensure that all available resources are put to good use. As Long Island’s largest hunger relief organiza-tion, our mission, to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island, is the driving force behind everything we do.

In 2011, we collected and distributed 7.44 million pounds of food, supplementing 6.2 million meals. Had we not intervened, much of this good, nutritious food might have ended up wasted rather than helping to feed people who are in need.

As the country continues to struggle with the shaky economy, more and more Long Islanders are coming forward seeking food assistance. We at Island Harvest are doing all we can to meet the increasing demand. As such, during 2011, we embarked on an expansion initiative that included the acquisition of a new, centrally located, 24,000 square foot warehouse; two mobile food pan-tries that target vulnerable segments of our population: seniors and people with disabilities; and military veterans and their families; and specialized programs that support advocacy, SNAP (food stamp) outreach, and more.

Our core Food Collection and Distribution Program remains our largest program, and lies at the heart of our mission; our Childhood Nutrition Initiatives reach well over 2,000 children, and include the Kids Weekend Back-pack Feeding Program and the Summer Food Service Program. Education, advocacy, and hunger awareness are critical components of our work and helps to inform the public about the issue of hunger and its devastating effects, as well as offer suggestions, guidance, and tools for people who are struggling.

By relying on our dedicated corps of volunteers, and in-kind donations including warehouse space, office space and professional services – and of course donated food – Island Harvest devotes more than 95 cents of every contributed dollar to programs.

dear Friends,

We’ve all been affected by this devastating economy, some more than others. Most of us were taught that if we worked hard, we would be able to achieve the ‘American dream,’ with a roof over our heads, food to eat, and enough money to pay the bills and live a com-fortable life. the ongoing recession has shattered these beliefs for far too many.

the new reality is that for thousands of our neighbors, friends, and colleagues, not having enough to eat is a daily occurrence, and often very well disguised.

For many Long Islanders who have spent years work-ing hard, accepting emergency food assistance is their reality now, and for the foreseeable future. In fact, many of the community service organizations in our network of member agencies reported that demand for food has tripled over the past few years.

Our response has been consistent: to get nutritious food, services, and referrals to those who need it. to state it another way, we at Island Harvest are mission centered, focused, and strategically aligned.

to ensure that we have the infrastructure to sustain this increased need, we leased a significantly larger ware-house, one that will enable us to effectively and effi-ciently move larger quantities of healthy food. We also drastically ramped up our support services, to include increased education and advocacy. In addition, we launched two mobile food pantries to ensure that the most vulnerable members of our community – people with disabilities, seniors, and veterans – have access to food and services.

It is because of your belief in our mission, to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island, that we have been, and continue to, offer support to so many. thank you!

Sincerely,

randi Shubin dresnerPresident and cEO

through our unique business model that emphasizes in-kind food, other donations and services along with robust volunteerism, we provide food and support services to nearly 300,000 Long Islanders who struggle with hunger. You will find some of our robust programs discussed throughout the report.

Our Food Collection and Distribution Program is at the core of our mission to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island, and remains our largest program.

through this integral activity, volunteers and staff col-lect good surplus donated food from about 800 local supermarkets, wholesalers, distributors, farms, caterers, hotels, manufacturers and restaurants. to supplement these collections, we help hundreds of local companies, schools, civic groups, individuals, and faith-based organi-zations conduct food drives – 957 in 2011.

Specially trained ‘food run volunteers’ assist us with weekly food rescues using their own vehicles. In addi-tion, Island Harvest’s professional drivers are on the road every weekday collecting and transporting larger loads. Nearly all the food recovered through this program is donated, with the remaining product being underwritten by grants and partners.

All of this collected food is distributed to our network of nearly 570 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, residences, day care and senior centers, and other community-based non-profit organizations where those who need it can get it. Our network of agencies then provides this food to hundreds of thousands of families, children, and individuals who are at-risk of hunger.

through our membership with Feeding America, our country’s leading domestic hunger-relief organization, we are able to secure large loads of donated food from national partners that we bring to Long Island. We don’t pay for this food, just its transportation.

THE HEART OF ISLAND HARVEST HAuppAuGE DISTRIBuTION FACILITY

FOOD COLLECTION AND DISTRIBuTION

As 2011 progressed, we knew that for the unforesee-able future, our services would be in high demand. Our primary concern was (and still is) ensuring that everyone who needed our help would receive it. As a result, we spent several months searching for a larger facility to accommodate the collection and distribution of higher quantities of food and the expansion of our support services. In december, we opened our 24,000 square foot facility in Hauppauge NY. With three loading bays; ample warehouse space; room for volunteers to sort, assemble, and pack food; and offices for Island Harvest’s operations and program staff, this facility provides for the collection, receipt, short-term storage, and offload-ing of a much greater volume of food.

We are grateful to the following individuals and com-panies for their generous in-kind donations of time, services, and merchandise: the Advantage group, tom Attivissimo, Bank of America, cPI Aero, John castellane, crate & Barrel, d’Amato Landscaping Inc, diFazio Electric, divine Electric, the Empire State regional council of carpenters, Stephen Fling, John Franta, garafalo carting, Hall’s carpet, Kevin M. For more than 100,000 children, a school meal is their primary source of nourishment each and every school day, and when there is no school – on weekends and during the summer – they lose this essential source of food. during 2011, Island Harvest partnered with 36 schools and community-based programs through-out Nassau and Suffolk counties to provide nutritious meals to more than 2,800 students through our Kids Weekend Backpack Feeding Program and the Sum-mer Food Service Program. restricted funds from in-dividuals, corporations, foundations, New York State, and Nassau county helped to fund these programs.

the Kids Weekend Backpack Feeding Program helps children who rely on school lunches and break-fasts but are not guaranteed a solid meal on Satur-days, Sundays, and holidays. Each Friday afternoon, students receive our special food packs to take home during the weekend. the packs contain four nutritious and ready-to-eat meals, two snacks, and two servings of milk. they also contain quarterly newsletters that include age appropriate, multi-lingual games and puz-zles to encourage healthy eating and information for parents regarding local food resources. “this program is a blessing for my family,” a parent recently noted.

during the 2010-11 school year, the program distributed over 50,000 food packs to nearly 1,600 kids at-risk of hunger in 19 schools. the program has more than tripled in scope since its inception six years ago.

Our Summer Food Service Program helps children in similar situations by providing free lunches at camps and recreation centers when school is out for the summer. In July and August this program provided more than 24,600 daily lunches to 1,266 children at 17 sites throughout Long Island, in areas not covered by counties or other summer lunch programs.

We thank Asofsky Family Foundation, Feeding America, geico Philanthropic Foundation, Howard E. Stark charitable Foundation, Marcie Mazzola Foundation, Newsday charities, Paul W. Zuccaire Foundation, St. John of Lattingtown, the rona Jaffe Foundation and the turan Family Foundation for their generous support of these important programs.

COMBATING CHILDHOOD HuNGER SENIOR MOBILE FOOD pANTRY

TARGETED HuNGER RELIEF pROGRAMS

A disturbing trend on Long Island is the increasing num-ber of senior citizens who are living in poverty. Many have seen their retirement savings wiped out from the ongoing economic recession. Still others live solely on Social Security or other assistance programs.

As a response to the growing need for assistance, in the Spring of 2011, Island Harvest launched a Senior Mobile Food Pantry, which brings food directly to senior citizens and persons with disabilities who need food assistance but may have difficulty reaching local pantries or other feeding programs. the Senior Mobile Food Pantry itself is a specially designed vehicle equipped to handle the distribution of food. to help avoid clients feeling stigmatized, the Pantry operator arranges the food in the appearance of a farmers market, and clients “shop” for what they need.

the Senior Mobile Food Pantry makes consistent weekly visits to three subsized housing facilities located in central Islip, Freeport, and East Hampton, and serves senior citizens and people with disabilities. during 2011, 4,805 senior citizens and those with disabilities received nearly 25,000 pounds of food, which supplemented more than 20,800 meals.

In addition to supplying nutritious food, a trained volunteer or a staff member from a partner organiza-tion accompanies the Senior Mobile Food Pantry to provide information and offer assistance on such topics as benefit eligibility, tax preparation, and fall prevention. Nutrition counseling and cooking demonstrations are also offered through the pantry.

4,805 SENIOR CITIZENS AND THOSE WITH DISABILITIES RECEIVED NEARLY 25,000

We believe that awareness is the first step toward ending hunger on Long Island, and work with a wide variety of individuals and organizations to educate and advocate on the issue of hunger.

Island Harvest offers Education Programs for our network of member non-profit organizations to ensure that we can holistically help people in need. Financial literacy, budgets and nutrition education are just a few of the topics presented. through this we seek to raise awareness of hunger among the broader Long Island community, advocate for public policies, train feeding program personnel to assist their clients beyond the emergency provision of food and news that they can use along the way with many other tips throughout the year.

Our Finding Solutions workshops are offered at no charge for staff and volunteers of the members of our network. these workshops are offered in a ‘train the trainer’ format so that attendees can go back to their organizations and train others who provide direct sup-port to people in need. Workshop topics include food safety, SNAP (food stamps), cooking demonstrations, and children’s health. thanks to videoconferencing technology, workshops were held simultaneously in multiple sites across Long Island.

Our advocacy work strengthened considerably with the acquisition of the Mobilized Interfaith Coalition Against Hunger (MICAH) last year. the coalition consists of 400 community leaders that represent 270 different congregations, with a goal to remove barriers to food security on Long Island through letter writing cam-paigns, workshops, town-hall meetings, and information sharing. On May 17th Island Harvest held an all-day MICAH conference, Combating Hunger on Long Island: Addressing the Obstacles, at Hofstra university. the Key Note speaker was Kevin concannon, the under Secretary for Food, Nutrition and consumer Services, uSdA, who spoke about the Farm Bill and its importance to nutrition programs.

those that have served our nation in combat often face exceptional obstacles readjusting to civilian life. these may range from severe physical injury to post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as the challenge of beginning a new career in a weak economy. In the worst cases, veterans whose needs go unaddressed risk facing issues of hunger and food insecurity.

to help the many that are struggling and in need of food assistance, Island Harvest launched Operation: HOPE – a mobile food pantry specifically designed to assist veterans and the families of active duty personnel.

A volunteer team comprised of veterans deliver “HOPE packs” of food and necessities to the homes of veterans and military families in need. In addition, Operation: HOPE volunteers assist them in accessing information about medical benefits, counseling, SNAP (food stamp) assistance, and other benefits that can help.

We are grateful to NBtY Helping Hands for underwriting the Operation: HOPE mobile food pantry.

Love and Quiches desserts– the company’s cakes for Kids® program began partnering with Island Harvest in 2009 by donating birthday cakes to bring joy to less fortunate children on Long Island and now also includes the a generous donation of a portion of the company’s profits to help combat hunger in children.

these cakes not only nour-ish children’s body but also their souls as they celebrate another birthday.

For more than 15 years, Island Harvest has partnered with the National Association of Letter carriers and the united States Postal Service for the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food drive. collectively this is the largest one-day food drive in the country, and on Long Island.

Every year, thousands of Long Islanders leave bags of food by their mailboxes on the Saturday before Mother’s day. Letter carriers pick up the food and deliver it to a donated warehouse, where hundreds of volunteers sort and pack the food for immediate distribution to our network of member agencies.

the 2011 Stamp Out Hunger Food drive carried nearly 450,000 pounds of food for our neighbors in need!

NBtY, a leader in the community. For many years, NBtY Inc., a prominent manufacturer of nutritional supplements located in ronkonkoma, generously donated protein bars, nutritional beverages, and vitamins to Island Harvest. three years ago and every year since, NBtY Helping Hands, through its foundation, has contributed substan-tial funds and continued to surpass donated product. NBtY Helping Hands Foundation generously underwrote the purchase of our Operation: HOPE van, and donated the majority of the racking system currently utilized in our new Food distribution center.

Island Harvest would not be able to function as effec-tively as we do without our volunteers. they donate food, contribute funds, host food drives, conduct food runs, visit schools and community groups to speak about the issue of hunger, and assist with accounting, graphic design, and general administrative tasks.

Our corporate volunteer program is especially robust. As a senior-level executive recently noted, “team based volunteerism is a wonderful experience…Our company benefits as they (our employees) learn lead-ership, communication and team-building skills. As the employee continues learning, they remain highly sought after skilled employees to the company.”

Our volunteer corps, more than 5,000 strong, includes people from all walks of life: students, senior citizens, concerned individuals and families, teams of company employees, and civic groups. All of our volunteers believe in our mission and the work we do – they are our greatest ambassadors!

during 2011, our volunteers contributed 74,700 hours of service…a value of more than $1.3 million!

VOLuNTEER OVERVIEw VOLuNTEER pROFILE

Volunteer Pat Bonelli first learned about hunger on Long Island from a speech Island Harvest President and cEO randi Shubin dresner gave seven years ago. Pat was so moved she immediately became a volunteer and has become an integral member of the Island Harvest team. As

Pat recently noted, “All of the volunteers that I work with are great and it’s because when you’re volunteering, you want to be there. these are people that are really giving of themselves and they really want to do good. It’s giving of yourself and it’s giving back to the community and that’s what’s important. If you give a little of yourself, it’s an act of kindness and everybody really needs to help each other in this time, in this economy. It definitely has made me a better person.”
