In 2005 Mike Blank, brother of Raymond Blank who Blank Children’s Hospital is named after, generously made a $5,000,000 bequest.

On February 23, 2012 Iowa’s first of it’s kind Children’s Developmental Center opened. Mike’s bequest will be used to help endow the center ensuring that it can remain open during a time when similar centers across the country are closing due to a shortage of funding.

In 2011, The Iowa Clinic, P.C. announced a gift of $1 million to support the Cardiovascular, Trauma and Critical Care Center to be built on the Iowa Methodist Medical Center Campus. This remarkable gift is the largest gift The Iowa Clinic, P.C. has made to Iowa Health — Des Moines and builds on 22 years of giving.

“As a leading provider of healthcare in the Des Moines area, we felt it was important to give back to the communities we serve. We are very proud of the meaningful work we have done to help build healthy communities. We are making great strides in living up to that mission.”

C. Edward Brown, FACHEChief Executive Officer, The Iowa Clinic, P.C.

In an emergency, when seconds can make the difference between life and death, it is important that the physicians, the nurses and the entire medical team have the best resources to provide the best care possible. How emergency medicine is practiced and the needs of patients and families have changed significantly in the last 10 years. The ambulances are larger, technology has advanced, and the types of emergency cases have grown significantly.

In response to these changes, in the Spring of 2013, Iowa Methodist Medical Center will begin construction to replace the existing emergency department with the Cardiovascular, Trauma and Critical Care Center. This new facility will be designed to respond to all levels of trauma from across the state of Iowa, and will continue our commitment to ongoing training and education for the next generation of medical professionals.

This leadership gift from The Iowa Clinic, P.C. represents not only their commitment to providing the best possible care, but also the significance of having state-of-the-art facilities ready to respond to members of our community at a critical time in their lives. Philanthropy will play a significant role in helping to make this project possible and we are extremely grateful for their commitment to the project.

In addition to this gift, The Iowa Clinic, P.C. has supported the construction of the Iowa Lutheran Hospital Emergency Department, the John Stoddard Cancer Center Rally Against Cancer, the Iowa Lutheran Hospital Westerberg Celebration, Blank Children’s Hospital Festival of Trees and Lights, and numerous other funds and projects.

The commitment of physicians and staff of The Iowa Clinic to improving the health of the community is evident in this very generous gift.

After 37 years dedicated to caring for children, Dr. Rizwan Shah, child abuse pediatrician, retired from clinical practice at the Blank Children’s Regional Child Protection Center. She’s dedicated nearly 4 decades of her life to caring and advocating for children who need us most.

When Dr. Shah first came to the United States from Pakistan in 1968 she found no openings in her medical specialty at the time--surgery. So she took a hiatus from medicine to stay home and raise a family with her husband.

After a few years, she returned to medicine and switched fields to specialize in pediatrics. She came to Des Moines in 1974 for a residency in pediatrics at Blank Children’s Hospital. Fortunately for the children of Des Moines, she stayed on, caring for them and becoming Medical Director of Blank Children’s Regional Child Protection Center.

Dr. Shah teaches child abuse training programs in both Iowa and nationally, as well as clinical teaching in medical schools and hospitals. She has served as President of the Iowa Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and Co-Chair of the Iowa Medical Society’s Public Health Committee.

Dr. Shah not only has been an amazing doctor but she has also been a dedicated donor to Blank Children’s. She is committed to the programs that have touched so many children’s lives and she and her husband are generous supporters of this program. It makes such a difference when the community sees the level of support coming from within our hospitals and are inspired in so many different ways.

“I’d like to be remembered as a physician who was not afraid to stand alone and speak for children; as somebody who addressed the social issues of their times,” Dr. Shah explains. “I couldn’t have hundreds of children of my own, but now in additional to my three children, I feel I have thousands of children. If I can make a difference in just one child’s life, I may help that child to grow up to be a capable parent and care for his or her own children and in that way break the circle of neglect and abuse in that family.”

A favorite Dr. Seuss quote of Dr. Shah sums it up: “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”

The annual Employee Giving Campaign kicked off in September again in 2011. Over 800 employees chose to support Iowa Heath – Des Moines and the community by pledging their support to our programs and services.

Led again by hospital administration, employees contributed a record-breaking $729,000. These funds will support programs at the Iowa Health Foundation, Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Iowa Lutheran Hospital, Blank Children’s Hospital, Methodist West Hospital, John Stoddard Cancer Center, Taylor House, United Way and Variety - The Children’s Charity.

With a theme like the “Employee Giving Fair,” we found ourselves watching the butter sculpting contest, voting in the ugliest cake contest, enjoying lemonade, corn dogs and other fair food. The employees always look forward to a fun-filled Employee Giving Campaign and the 2011 campaign did not disappoint!

Page 11: 2011 IHF Annual Report

Carolyn and Les’s cancer journey began in the spring of 1974 when Carolyn was diagnosed with stage IV Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. They were in their 20s with a two and four year old, cancer was about the furthest from their minds. Throughout that time Les was beside Carolyn as much as he could be, caring for her and supporting her through the tough days.

They knew how serious her diagnosis was and their prayer was that Carolyn would live long enough for the kids to remember her. By the fall their prayer had been answered, and Carolyn was declared cancer free.

While cancer was always in their minds, it faded over time and it was not until a cold day in March 2009, when they heard what they had always feared, cancer was again part of their lives. After seven months, in spite of all of the chemotherapy and radiation, Carolyn was not getting better.

Both Les and Carolyn were tired and frustrated, “we knew something wasn’t working. We wanted answers and no one seemed to be able to give them to us. “

It was at that point the Peltz’s were introduced to Carissa Thompson, a Care Coordinator at John Stoddard Cancer Center. The coordinators are specially-trained oncology nurses that help guide and provide support to both cancer patients and families through their cancer journey.

What struck Carolyn and Les the most was that Carissa truly cared about them and their experience. She not only wanted to make sure that Carolyn was comfortable and receiving the proper services she needed, but Carissa was also there to help support Les in his role as the caregiver. As Les recalls:

“Being a caregiver was lonely. I was so focused on making sure everything was right, that everything was working. Just knowing that I was not there by myself was very important to me. She gave me the support I needed to help Carolyn. She cared for both of us.”

On December 13, 2009, Carolyn lost her fight against cancer. Among the many faces at the visitation, Les remembers Carissa. He didn’t expect her to be there and was moved by this small act of continued support of him and his family. She was there not because she had to be, it was because she cared.

That is why Les supports the Care Coordinator Program. He wants to make sure that those having to go through the journey have the opportunity to work with Carissa and the other Care Coordinators to make the journey easier and more comfortable for all patients.

Comfort Therapies

Comfort therapies are non-medical, non-invasive approaches to providing comfort that work side-by-side with the hospice teams. Their use in hospice environments is growing and research has shown them to be effective tools for increasing comfort and personal wellness while reducing stress, anxiety and pain.

Animal-Assisted TherapyDogs have been long recognized as being a positive force in the healing process and have become miracles with paws.

Research demonstrates that animal assisted therapy decreases pain, serves as a diversion from illness, reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, increases communication and bring smiles to patient’s faces.

Animals are tools for therapy because they can make people feel safe. It can be especially useful in the hospice setting for patients who have withdrawn from the people around them. Family and staff also benefit from the unconditional love and affection from animal assisted therapy.

Music TherapyMusic Therapy is the use of music by professionally trained, board certified music therapists (MT-BC) in their care for people living with advanced illnesses. Research provides support for music therapy to increase quality of life, alleviate spiritual suffering, provide pain management, and promote relaxation in end-of-life care.

Music therapists are an integral part of the hospice interdisciplinary team (nurses, social workers, chaplains, bereavement counselors, physicians, and volunteers) who work to develop and provide the best care possible for each patient.

Massage TherapyPatients cope with illnesses that often lead to increased pain and discomfort, that can distance the connection they share with caregivers through touch. The gentle and individualized care of a highly trained and certified professional massage therapist can restore the experience of touch as a point of connection, comfort, and nurturing. Massage therapy helps ease pain, lower anxiety levels, alleviate sleeplessness, lower blood pressure, reduce muscle tightness and reduce isolation by utilizing non-invasive interventions to meet each patient’s unique needs.

Art TherapyArt therapy, which can be assisted by professional artists or volunteers, is intended to revitalize and enrich the lives of patients, visitors and staff through visual and/or literary art. It assists and enhances the healing process and reduce the stress and anxiety often associated with healthcare settings while fostering creative expression for adults and children coping with illness or injury.

In 1971, the Helen Powell Convalescent Center, a 150-bed facility connected to Iowa Methodist Hospital opened. The original thought of the center was to provide extended treatment to patients recovering from stroke, heart, fractures, arthritis, and surgical patients whose recovery required considerable time.

As healthcare needs in the community changed, the third floor of Powell opened as an alcoholism treatment center in 1973, later providing oncology facilities. Internal medicine occupied Powell 4. Orthopedics originally occupied Powell 5 and remains there today. Powell Chemical Dependency Center is now located at Iowa Lutheran Hospital.

Mr. and Mrs. Powell announced their substantial gift for the construction of the facility in 1970. Helen and Watson were co-founders of the American Republic Insurance Company whose national office is headquartered in Des Moines. Their historic gift provided services and treatments for the community that were only available in a few areas.

Arts for Healing

At Iowa Methodist Medical Center, the majority of our patients come into the hospital with a one-time health issue that is treated and patients are able to go home. However, some patients must come to the hospital for an extended stay or are experiencing chronic health conditions that require frequent trips to the hospital.

The hours and days spent in a hospital can be slow and anxiety filled days. The Arts for Healing program brings a local artist regularly to the hospital to greet patients with a cart full of art supplies and helps patients explore artistic expression. Since it began, the program has continued to grow in popularity among our patients and recently expanded to other Iowa Health – Des Moines hospitals.

Recently, a soft spoken bright-eyed 73 year old patient who had multiple, chronic and eventually fatal health issues, expressed his desire to try his hand at painting.

Having never painted before, he didn’t really know what he wanted to paint or how to go about it. After sharing stories of his time in Hawaii, his fondness for country landscapes, and his love of his farm, the volunteer artist sketched a mountain scene with sail boats on the ocean, and a country barn with silos, trees and large round hay bales on a hillside.

Before he began painting the sketches, they talked a bit about color, the concept of lights to dark and especially about enjoying the experience of expressing himself through his own creativity. He mentioned perhaps giving the pictures to his grandchildren.

This program, supported through philanthropic dollars, does more than help patients pass the time. The Arts for Healing program was developed from evidence based research which has demonstrated that art sessions in hospitals not only help in times of healing but actually helps with healing. The outcomes we expect based on earlier research studies are an increase in patient satisfaction, an increased sense of control, a decrease in length of stay, and a decrease in healing time.

Patients who have participated in the art program have enjoyed the activity in addition to reporting improved mental and physical well-being such as a reduction in pain, anxiety, and tension.

“I can’t imagine a bigger joy than to be part of helping a patient find peace and contentment in his final days.”

Volunteer Artist

Blank Children’s Hospital is a staple in the Iowa Health – Des Moines family. Designed specifically with the needs of children in mind, Blank Children’s offers unique, personalized care provided by outstanding pediatric specialists. But behind the building block exterior and crayon-box colors lies the story of what made Blank possible.

Blank Children’s Hospital is named in honor of Raymond I. Blank, son of A.H. and Anna Blank. Raymond attended Roosevelt High School and completed his undergraduate degree at Brown University. He was a participant in the Geneva Peace Conference, and there, President Roosevelt appointed Raymond to lead Iowa’s Polio Foundation. This sparked his interest in children’s health, and he genuinely cared about their well-being.

Feeling compelled to contribute toward a pediatric program at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Raymond helped arrange for a children’s polio unit at the hospital. Raymond died unexpectedly in 1943 at the age of 33, and in his memory, his parents built Iowa’s first children’s hospital in 1944.

The construction was done amidst World War 2. Blank was the only civilian hospital built in the country during this time due to the polio outbreak.

Although named specifically after Raymond, Blank Children’s Hospital represents the entire Blank family. Through their generous giving and support, Blank Children’s Hospital has advanced over the years and is truly a gem in Iowa Health – Des Moines.

Since 1965, thousands of Iowa children and adolescents have been served through the behavioral health programs at Iowa Health – Des Moines. Children and adolescents face many obstacles while trying to grow and find their identity. For some, the obstacles — whether they are at home, at school or in the community — are so great that they are better served in a therapeutic environment under the supervision of mental health professionals. For these children and adolescents, the inpatient unit at Iowa Lutheran Hospital is one of the few places in Iowa where they can receive appropriate treatment, learn coping skills and other positive behavioral tools and continue their school work.

Since being built nearly four decades ago, only minor cosmetic updates had occurred on the behavioral unit. In 2011, with funding from the “I love ILH Capital Improvements Fund,” Iowa Lutheran Auxiliary and others, the unit was renovated into a more tranquil environment. The updated décor has created a calming and healing environment that will reduce the anxiety of patients. New flooring, improved lighting, plants and furniture have all added a calm and comforting environment making the patients feel welcome and at ease. In addition, newly installed windows that are safe for mental health patients are providing natural light which is an important element of good health.

“The changes in the department have been significant,” says Julie Cronk, RN, BS, manager of the Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health Department. “The environment is much more comfortable and inviting, and the staff is happier and proud to be a part of this department.”

By partnering with the Iowa Health Foundation and Iowa Lutheran Hospital Auxiliary on fundraising projects, a new awareness of the behavioral health department’s needs have been communicated and new donors are being directed their way.

Wishes

Star light, star bright, I wish I may I wish I might, get the wish I wish tonight. Wishes. Dreams come true. A secret whispered in the night. Wishes.

A simple childhood fantasy and a twinkling star take on a whole new meaning when your child is sick. Suddenly the wish is no longer a flight of fancy, but instead a heart’s deepest cry into the night.

At Blank Children’s Hospital, we know those wishes. Because they’re ours, too. We work tirelessly to make them come true. Every day. Every child. They are our life’s work. They can be your life’s legacy.

In February 2012 the first of it’s kind Children’s Developmental Center in Iowa opened. How is it possible for a center in Iowa to open at the same time similar centers across the country are closing?

It is because of three people’s legacy, three people’s last gift to Blank Children’s Hospital. Two of these people never had children, yet it was their fondest wish to help children. Three people who never met, who will never know any of the children helped, who never had any idea of how their last gift, their bequest, would be used by Blank Children’s Hospital.

Yet these three people helped make possible the dream of a Children’s Developmental Center by including Blank Children’s Hospital in their wills. Their bequests were put into an endowment that will generate a dependable, flexible source of income that is critical to the long-term strength and stability of programs like the center.

But there is more to be done. New treatments to offer. New equipment that will save lives. New laws to fight for. New techniques to teach. And over the horizon there is a world of medicine that we cannot fathom. But we must be ready. The children who come to us hurting and scared are counting on it.

Who knows what groundbreaking event your gift could be part of. Everyday we ask our donors to help us answer the quietly whispered wishes of parents for generations to come.

“Please let me hear him laugh again.”

“Please let her live through the night.”

“Please just let them find the answer.”

Virginia Thompson dedicated her life to helping others and left a mark on Iowa Health – Des Moines.

Virginia was instrumental in opening the doors of the medical profession to women. In 1933, she graduated from the University of Iowa medical school. After graduating, she spent three years as an anesthetist on the University of Iowa Hospital staff before she left Iowa City in 1940 to join Iowa Methodist. “Doc Tommy,” the nickname Virginia quickly received, became Methodist’s chief anesthetist and held this position for the rest of her career. Upon her death, Virginia left a bequest to Methodist, and Thompson Auditorium is named in her honor.

Virginia is a shining example of commitment and generosity to Iowa Health – Des Moines. We are grateful and humbled for her work and thoughtful giving throughout the years.

When a patient arrives in the Emergency Department there are often many unknowns — the cause of the pain, why the skin is swollen, and why that bruise just does not look quite right. It is up to the Emergency Department physicians, nurses and medical team to utilize all of their training and resources to diagnose, and provide treatment as quickly as possible.

For the Emergency Department at Methodist West Hospital, thanks to the generosity of Derek and Rhonda Hill and The Kenyon Family, they have one more tool to use to solve the unknowns, the M-Turbo ultrasound system.

The M-Turbo ultrasound system is a light-weight, portable ultrasound system that allows physicians to visualize details in the abdominal, nerve, vascular, cardiac, and superficial areas. It allows physicians to obtain immediate clinical information, improve patient safety, increase efficiency, and decrease complications.

This is especially important when the patient is too critical to be moved. The M-Turbo ultrasound system can be brought to the bedside to conduct a quick scan to better understand next steps in treatment.

“Being a physician in the Emergency Department is much like an investigator, sometimes we have very few leads on what is causing the problem. The M-Turbo ultrasound system is an important tool for us to use at the bedside. It can provide us with a quick scan, which in turn, can provide us with much needed direction in providing the best care possible.”

Larry Baker, DO, Medical Director

It is through the generosity of our donors that we are able to provide advanced technology when it is needed. Thank you for your generosity.

RALLY AGAINST CANCER WESTERBERG CELEBRATION

The 2011 Rally Against Cancer, a benefit for John Stoddard Cancer Center, was held on Saturday, January 29. More than 550 guests attended the sold out event and raised $175,000 to support the programs and services of John Stoddard Cancer Center.

The featured speaker was former Ohio State and Detroit Lions linebacker, Chris Spielman. In 1998, Chris’s wife Stefanie was diagnosed with breast cancer. Throughout their journey both publicly talked about breast cancer in order to raise awareness about the importance of education and prevention. Even though Stefanie tragically lost her fight to the disease in November 2009, Chris remains committed to the fight against cancer.

The proceeds from this event will be used to support the Cancer Care Coordinator Program and the Varian TrueBeam STx™.

The 20th Annual Westerberg Celebration was held April 28, 2011. More than $78,000 was raised in support for Iowa Lutheran Hospital. Proceeds benefited the “I Love ILH” Capital Improvements Fund.

Physicians, administration, employees, nurse alumni, volunteers, Auxiliary members, community friends and our business partners come together and celebrate the uniqueness of Iowa Lutheran.

In addition, we honor a philanthropist of the year. The Coskery Award is given each year to an individual or organization who has supported Iowa Lutheran Hospital through their ongoing financial gifts. In 2011, the award was presented to Dr. Tim and Jane Hart. Their support over the years clearly exemplifies their outstanding spirit of commitment and generosity to Iowa Lutheran Hospital and the Iowa Health – Des Moines family.

The 2013 Rally Against Cancer will be held January 26. Watch for details.

The 2012 Westerberg Celebration will be held April 19. Watch for details.

Rachel Younker made a significant gift to provide the seed money for the Younker Rehabilitation Center. Rachel Younker was a sister to the Younker brothers who opened the department store in downtown Des Moines. Her gift was the second largest ever received by Iowa Methodist at that time. Only A. H. Blank had given a larger gift.

When Younker Rehabilitation Center opened in 1959, Iowa Methodist Medical Center was considered a pioneer in retraining or rehabilitating injured muscles and bodies ravaged by disease and injury.

Younker Rehabilitation Center serves patients who need 24-hour rehabilitation nursing care in an inpatient setting, three or more hours of intensive physical and occupational therapy and 24-hour availability of a physician who specializes in physical rehabilitation. Since opening in 1959, the center has led the way in providing rehabilitation to the community. A wide variety of injuries, illnesses and congenital diagnoses are treated at the center.

Patients with stroke, brain injury or spinal cord injury, as well as many other specialized diagnoses, are cared for thanks to the generosity of Rachel Younker.

The 28th Annual Blank Children’s Hospital Festival of Trees and Lights raised just over $407,000 to support the Child Life Program and Center for Advocacy & Outreach.

Thank you to Honorary Chairs, Cyndi and Ken Bonus, the committees, underwriters, tree decorators and hundreds of volunteers who generously donated their time to make this event such a success. A special thank you to Iowa Realty, who has continued to support us at the presenting sponsor level and first time donors, Iowa Select Farms/Jeff & Deb Hansen Foundation, for naming the performance area.

The Gala Committee, led by co-chairs Chris Irvine and Jenny Ferrari, secured unique auction items, both live and silent, the Gala Event raised more than $92,000.

Volunteer decorators show their flair and creativity shines each year. Visitors and underwriters never leave disappointed in their unique designs and clever uses for decorations.

FESTIVAL OF TREES & LIGHTS

The year 2011 marked the first annual Love Lights Celebration at Taylor House Hospice.

On November 30, over 80 family members and staff gathered to “Light up Taylor House”. Everyone gathered in the family room to share thoughts of the upcoming holidays, enjoy the warmth of Taylor House and sing carols.

The group moved to the front yard, where the Stadtlander family assisted with the lighting of the trees. The central location of the ceremony made it possible for current patients and families to watch from their patios. Each patio had been decorated with lights and added to the warmth of the evening.

Special thanks to the volunteers, both young and old, who spent several hours preparing for the lighting ceremony by stringing lights and decorating Taylor House.

In March 2011, four-year-old Hannah Geneser died when a screen gave way and she fell through an open, third story window. In response to her untimely and tragic death, the Hannah Geneser Foundation was founded by her parents, Jamie and Shanda.

Window accidents are completely preventable. No parent need suffer the pain and heartbreaking loss of a child from a window fall. Hannah’s Hope is the window safety outreach program sponsored by the Hannah Geneser Foundation in collaboration with Blank Children’s Hospital Center for Advocacy & Outreach to help educate parents and other child caregivers on the dangers posed by windows and the actions that can be taken to prevent window accidents.

By partnering with Blank Children’s to advocate for child safety with an emphasis on window safety, Blank Children’s will launch the Safety Store in 2012 where all types of childhood safety devices and equipment will be sold to parents, including window safety devices.

With their pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters the children of the Evergreen Church of Christ are helping to make the tough days on the inpatient oncology unit a little better by supporting the Coffee, Cookies and Conversation program.

Each week the children bring a special offering to church and for the past three years they have made this special program possible. The kids love cookies and they know better than most how much happiness a cookie can bring during a tough day.

With their gifts and offerings they help to provide the cookies and coffee for our volunteers to deliver to patients and families on the Adult Oncology floor. These cookies are a sweet treat on days that are very difficult, helping to bring smiles and laughter at a time when it is needed most. Without those pennies, nickels and dimes this program would not be possible.

John Stoddard was an engineer by training and a real estate developer and entrepreneur by profession who amassed a large fortune and gave most of it away. He often said that the reason he worked so hard to make money was to have more to give away.

Before John’s own brief fight with cancer and death in 1998, no member of his family ever had cancer. Still, in 1990, his keen interest in medical care and compassion for others compelled him to support Iowa Methodist Medical Center’s new cancer center with a $4 million gift. In recognition of his generosity, the center was named the John Stoddard Cancer Center.

John was always a fervent ambassador for the center, spreading his enthusiasm for the new and emerging technology, expert cancer researchers and care givers, and personalized family-centered care. Shortly before his illness, John said, “Once you see the center, once you see the remarkable work that’s being done, that’s what really motivates you to give. There’s such an attitude of hope.”

While John Stoddard never mentioned it, his friends, business associates and family saw his gift as a transformational experience for John. While visiting the cancer center, patients and their family members would hear staff greeting Mr. Stoddard. Upon hearing his name they would approach Mr. Stoddard and thank him for his gift that made the cancer center possible. These were very touching moments as John would talk one on one with families facing cancer.

Taylor House Hospice was built to provide care and comfort to terminally-ill patients and families as an alternative to receiving hospice care in a facility like a hospital or nursing home, and can provide respite care and pain management. Taylor House serves as a patient’s place of residence while he or she receives care. Part of that care means providing a “home-like” setting for patients and families while they are here.

Every one of Taylor House’s rooms has access to a private outdoor patio, yet some of the patios had benches, and others did not. A group of Taylor House supporters wanted to rectify this, and raised funds to purchase benches for all of Taylor House. The benches were donated by the families of Taylor House patients Ruth Deardorff, Nancy Smalley and Evelyn Hill.

On a sunny fall day in October, a dedication ceremony was held at Taylor House to unveil the new benches. Attendees brought brightly colored mums to decorate the patios and Taylor House. The beautiful new benches signify the level of attention and care that goes into ensuring patients and families truly feel at home during their hospice journey at Taylor House.

Iowa Select Farms not only supported the Blank Children’s Festival of Trees & Lights at the $25,000 level, but also wanted to find a way for their employees to give back during the holidays. Guests of the annual holiday party were asked to bring items off the Blank Children’s Hospital wish list.

When guests started to arrive they were overwhelmed with the generosity of their company leadership, farm management teams and special guests. Employees walked in with shopping bags and boxes of toys and activities, and others took a more practical route – dropping packages of much-needed batteries while others quietly left $100 and $200 gift certificates on the gift table without leaving a trace of the donor’s identity.

“We had naively brought two plastic totes to transport the gifts from the party to the hospital. Within minutes those were full and we were pulling out tables to accommodate the piles of bags and boxes of brightly colored toys and games,” said Jen Holtkamp, Communications Director for Iowa Select Farms.

Blank Children’s Hospital was thrilled to receive this very generous toy donation during the holidays.

“Why fit in, when you were born to stand out?” - Dr. Seuss

A dream many years in the making to serve children with developmental, behavioral and physical disabilities is now a reality — thanks to the generous support of many donors in our community that helped us raise $3 million dollars for the capital campaign.

The Blank Children’s Developmental Center is a centralized place for kids with developmental delays and physical limitations to be diagnosed and treated. Our goal is to provide all patients with the opportunity to receive care early in their development to maximize their potential. The specialty-trained, multidisciplinary team of medical specialists and therapists develop a unique , comprehensive program and appropriate treatment plan for each child.

Hospital leaders consider it “the most comprehensive developmental center in the state.” Commonly treating patients with autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, birth defects, Down syndrome, genetic anomalies, hearing and vision impairments, learning disorders, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and brachial plexus.

The Foundation has also raised endowment dollars for the new center that will cover planned operational losses each and every year.

The School of Nursing building at Iowa Lutheran Hospital was completed in 1922. This building alleviated the need for nurses’ quarters which had been sorely needed since the hospital had opened in 1914. The new nurses’ home intentionally was built larger than necessary for a dormitory. The first and third floors were constructed for nurses’ use, but floors four and five floors were built as patient areas. This building increased the hospital’s capacity from 100 to 150 beds and increased the size of the nursing school from 50 to 75 students. A swimming pool was also built into this facility.

This grand old building had deteriorated through the years and changes to fire and patient codes forced administration to choose the most cost-effective option and tear the building down. Demolition occurred in July 2011. For the time being, green space will occupy the area.

The history and legacy of Lutheran School of Nursing will remain. Iowa Health – Des Moines will treasure the memories and work the School achieved, and even though the loss is difficult, Lutheran can look forward to a new future will more years of success to come.

In 2011 the National Breast Cancer Foundation provided a grant to John Stoddard Cancer Center to provide free mammograms, and the necessary follow-up screenings, for up to 150 women who are under insured or who do not have insurance.

Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death among women in the United States and at John Stoddard Cancer Center it is the most common diagnosis for women. Two of the most important tools in the fight against cancer are awareness and early detection.

For women who are uninsured or underinsured, access to preventative health screenings is either limited or nonexistent. For these women, when cancer is present, it is not typically discovered until it has reached late stages. The ramification of a late discovery compounds the cost of treatment and will directly impact her ability to care for family, to work, and to pay bills. This, in turn, increases the need of support from community resources.

Through this partnership we will increase access to mammograms which will help improve the likelihood of detecting breast cancer early. In addition, it will also help to raise awareness about the importance of breast health among a segment of the population for which it is more difficult to deliver health messages.
