Camille Trujillo scored two goals as Georgetown

beat Siena, 5-1, for its first-ever NCAA Tournament win.

Three other players scored goals, with Ingrid Wells,

Kaitlin Brenn and Colleen Dinn getting one apiece,

while Christina O’Tousa had two assists.

Goalkeeper Jackie DesJardin stopped three shots

from Maryland in penalty kicks as the Hoyas won the

shootout, 3-2, to advance to the Sweet Sixteen of

the NCAA Tournament.

Kaitlin Brenn converted one of three penalty kicks

for the Hoyas in the win over Maryland.

Playing in Minnesota, Georgetown’s players were

greeted with temperatures in the single digits and

huge snow banks on the side of the field after a

storm earlier in the week.

Samantha Baker scored the game-winning goal in

the 89th minute, lifting Georgetown to a 1-0 win over

the Golden Gophers and to the Elite Eight.

Baker’s goal came off a direct corner kick; it was

the fourth time in 2010 that she had scored a goal

off a corner.

The team’s dream of reaching the College Cup

ended in the Elite Eight with a 2-0 loss to Ohio State.

Georgetown finished the 2010 season with a

school record 15 wins.

Washington wears its history on its face. Historic settings abound. Major landmarks and national treasures are centralized and located minutes away from each other. Beyond its historical and national significance, much of Washington’s mystique can be attributed to its diverse cultural offerings. Enjoy opera, Broadway, dance, music concerts and other productions by visiting the Kennedy Center, National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Institute and multiple other venues. In addition to history and culture, visitors and native Washingtonians alike can enjoy professional sports. Home to the Washington Redskins, Nationals, Wizards, Mystics, Capitals and D.C. United, there is no lack of professional sporting opportunities within the District. Nestled within two hours of the Atlantic Ocean beaches in Delaware and Maryland, D.C. is also an easy drive to the major metropolitan cities of Philadelphia, New York and Baltimore.

UNIVERSITY MISSIONSTATEMENTGeorgetown is a Catholic and Jesuit, student-centered research university. Established in 1789 in the spirit of the new republic, the University was founded on the principle that serious and sustained discourse among people of different faiths, cultures, and beliefs promotes intellectual, ethical and spiritual understanding. We embody this principle in the diversity of our students, faculty and staff, our commitment to justice and the common good, our intellectual openness and our international character. An academic community dedicated to creating and communicating knowledge, Georgetown provides excellent undergraduate, graduate and professional education in the Jesuit tradition for the glory of God and the well-being of humankind. Georgetown educates women and men to be reflective lifelong learners, to be responsible and active participants in civic life, and to live generously in service to others.

for over three decades, John J. De-Gioia has helped to define and strengthen Georgetown University as a premier institution for education and research. Since graduating from the University in 1979, he has served both as a senior administrator and as a faculty mem-ber. On July 1, 2001, he became Georgetown’s 48th president. As president, Dr. DeGioia is deeply committed to sustaining academic excellence at Georgetown. He has helped to recruit intellectual leaders to the faculty and secured substantial funding for scholarly research and academic programs. Under Dr. DeGioia’s leadership, the University completed in December 2003 the largest fund-raising effort in University history, the Third Century Campaign. The $1 billion capital campaign benefited Georgetown’s Main, Medical, and Law Center campuses to secure endowment funds for curriculum and faculty support, increase student financial aid, and build and renovate facilities. In 2002-2003, Dr. DeGioia oversaw the largest expansion of campus facilities, with the Southwest Quadrangle - a one million square-foot complex of student housing; study, seminar and music rooms; and a new Jesuit Community Residence - at the forefront. Dr. DeGioia addresses broader issues in higher education as a Chair of the Board of Directors of Campus Compact and of the Forum for the Future of Higher Education. He also serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the National Association of Independent

Colleges and Universities; the Board of Directors for the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities; the Executive Committee of the Council on Competitiveness; the Business-Higher Education Forum; the Steering Committee of the Talloires Network; the Big East Conference Executive Committee; and is a Commissioner on the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics. To prepare young people for leadership roles in the global community, Dr. DeGioia has expanded opportunities for intercultural and interreligious dialogue, welcomed world leaders to campus, and convened international conferences to address challenging issues. He represents Georgetown at the World Economic Forum, the Council on Foreign Relations, and the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO, where he recently served as Chair of the Education Committee. Dr. DeGioia has enhanced Georgetown’s relationship with the many political, cultural, corporate, and economic resources of Washington, D.C. He serves on the Greater Washington Board of Trade and the Federal City Council. Dr. DeGioia is also a strong supporter of Georgetown’s social justice initiatives that seek to improve opportunities for Washington’s underserved neighborhoods. As the first lay president of a Jesuit university, Dr. DeGioia places special emphasis on sustaining and strengthening Georgetown’s Catholic and Jesuit identity and its responsibility to serve as a voice and an instrument for justice. He has also been a strong advocate for inter-

religious dialogue. He is a member of the Order of Malta, a lay religious order of the Roman Catholic Church dedicated to serving the sick and the poor. Dr. DeGioia is a Professorial Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy. He earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Georgetown University in 1979 and his PhD in Philosophy from the University in 1995. He has most recently taught “Ethics and Global Development,” “Human Rights: A Culture in Crisis,” and a seminar on “Ways of Knowing.” Prior to his appointment as president, Dr. DeGioia held a variety of senior administrative positions at Georgetown, including senior vice president, responsible for university-wide operations, and dean of student affairs. In 2004, he was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Academia from the Sons of Italy. And he was named a Washingtonian of the Year by The Washingtonian magazine in 2008. Dr. DeGioia was raised in Orange, Connecticut, and Hanford, California. He and his wife, Theresa Miller DeGioia, a Georgetown alumna, and their son, John Thomas, live in Washington, D.C.

lee reed was named the 17th director of athletics (Francis X. Rienzo chair) at George-town University in April 2010. As director of athletics, Reed will oversee the operations of all Georgetown University intercollegiate athletics programs, which includes 29 sports and more than 750 student-athletes Reed takes over for Daniel R. Porterfield, Ph.D., Georgetown’s senior vice-president for strategic development who served as interim director of athletics during the 2009-10 academic year. Reed comes to Georgetown after serving as the director of athletics at Cleveland State University in Ohio for eight years. A former basketball standout at Cleveland State, he joined the Vikings Athletics Department in the summer of 2002. “Lee is committed to educational excellence and competitive success and I am confident that with his leadership we will continue to recruit and support first-rate coaches and student-athletes who maintain the University’s tradition of academic and athletic success,’ Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia said. “This has been a thorough search process and we look forward to the contributions he will make to our athletics program and the lives of our student-athletes.” Under Reed’s leadership the Viking athletics program moved into the upper ranks of the Horizon League and was recognized as one of the top programs in the state of Ohio. Reed oversaw a department that captured 11 Horizon League Championships, as well as six runner-

up finishes in the last three years. In addition, Cleveland State University has been represented at the NCAA Championship 15 times during that span. Reed’s plan and vision led the Vikings to claim the James J. McCafferty Trophy during the 2007-08 season, an honor recognizing the Horizon League’s all-sport champion. It was the first time that CSU captured the award. CSU won the league’s Men’s All-Sports Award, while the Vikings finished third in the Women’s All-Sports Award. The Vikings, who had never finished higher than fifth place in the McCafferty standings, became just the fourth current Horizon League school to win the award. Reed is well-respected nationally, having represented the Horizon League on the NCAA Management Council and as the president of the NCAA I-AAA Athletic Director’s Association in 2007-08. He is also a member of the NCAA Basketball Academic Enhancement Group, a working group composed of presidents, chancellors, head coaches, commissioners, athletic directors and faculty athletic representatives, which was established to develop strategies to enhance the academic performance and graduation rates of NCAA Division I men’s basketball. Reed has served as chairman of the John McLendon Memorial Minority Postgraduate Scholarship Awards committee, which is operated through NACDA, Reed also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission. In March

of 2005, he was named one of the 50 Most Powerful African-Americans in Sports by Black Enterprise magazine. Reed rejoined the Vikings after spending the previous seven years (1995-02) at Eastern Michigan University, the last four as associate athletic director for internal affairs. As associate athletic director, Reed oversaw all internal affairs of the department, including compliance, operations and facilities. He had administrative oversight for seven Olympic sports, coordinating fund raising, budget development and the hiring and evaluation of coaches. He administered the athletic department’s $3.5 million grant-in-aid budget that covered 21 sports. A four-year letterman in men’s basketball at Cleveland State, Reed played on teams that compiled a 61-47 mark, serving as team captain for the 1982-83 season. Reed then served as an assistant men’s basketball coach at the University of New Mexico from 1984-86. He later received a master’s degree in sports administration from UNM in 1994.

THE vISION OF GEORGETOwN SPORTS PERFORmANCE as-pires to promote the core principles of discipline, dedication, honesty, integ-rity, hard work, and accountability. We do this while following the guidelines of our certifying bodies the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association. The Hoyas train out of the 4,700 square foot weight room located in Yates Field House. Student-athletes are trained in proper Olympic lifting technique along with speed, agility, core, and power training by highly quali-fied strength & conditioning coaches. Student- athletes are given sport spe-cific programs along with an individualized program to fit their own specific needs. Student-athletes undergo an athletic evaluation preformed by the strength & conditioning staff before stepping into the racks in order to see where their physical status stands and in which areas they need to improve. A scoring scale is given and the student-athlete works throughout the year to improve that score. The equipment was upgraded during the summer of 2011 to enhance the student-athlete experience and improve performance.

For Georgetown University Women’s Soccer Head Coach, nothing in life comes without hard work. It is what drove him when he played the sport as a youth in Ireland, and it is what drove him when he played in

four NCAA Tournaments and won two BIG EAST Championships in college. Hard work is also what he says is one of the main reasons the Georgetown Uni-versity women’s soccer team has reached the highest levels of success in its 18-year history. Nolan enters his eighth year as head coach for the Hoyas in 2011, but his 13th overall on the Hilltop, having been an as-sistant for five years prior to being named head coach. In his time at Georgetown, Nolan has guided the Hoyas to national promi-nence over the most successful period in program history, highlighted by the team advancing to the Elite Eight of the 2010 NCAA Tournament. Within the past four seasons, the team has set records for most wins (15 in 2010), most regular season wins (14 in 2007), most BIG EAST wins (8 in 2008), highest BIG EAST finish (2nd), most shut-outs (10), and a program-best start of 7-0-0 last season after starting the 2008 sea-son with an 8-0-2 record. In 2010, the Hoyas were selected to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history and advanced to the Elite Eight after wins over Siena, Maryland and Minnesota, posting the best record in school history at 15-7-2. The team earned its first-ever NCAA Tournament appear-ance in 2007 and had the best overall regular season finish in program history – 13-3-2 in 2008. Last season, Georgetown started the year with a 7-0-0 record and finished the regular season with a 13-6-1 mark, reach-ing the BIG EAST Championship Tourna-ment for the sixth time in the last seven seasons with a first round bye. Led by BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year and First Team All-American Ingrid Wells, the Hoyas boasted an offense that ranked second in

the league in goals per game (2.04) and ranked among the top-30 in the country. Five players earned All-BIG EAST honors as the Hoyas advanced to the NCAA Tour-nament and beat Siena in the first round (5-1) before toppling No. 1 seed Maryland in the second round in penalty kicks. A thrilling 1-0 win at Minnesota in the third round advanced the Blue & Gray to the Elite Eight, where the season would end with a 2-0 loss at Ohio State. The Hoyas ended the 2010 season ranked No. 18 in the country in the National Soccer Coach-es Association of America poll. In 2009, Georgetown reached the BIG EAST Championship Tournament for the fifth time in six seasons behind one of the top offenses in the nation. The Blue & Gray averaged 2.25 goals per contest and were led by BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year Sara Jordan and fellow First Team All-BIG EAST member, Ingrid Wells. The duo combined for 15 goals and 18 assists in leading the Hoyas to their third consecutive season of 10 wins or more. In 2008, a high-powered offense (2.54 goals per game) was complemented by a talented defense (0.59 goals-against per game) that led to the Hoyas finishing the regular season with a 13-3-2 record and hosted the BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinals for the first time in program history. Nolan led the program to one of the best turnarounds in the country in 2007, as the Hoyas rebounded from a 5-9-5 re-cord the year before to finish the regular season with a 13-6-0 mark. Georgetown advanced to the BIG EAST Tournament Semifinals for the first time in program history after beating No. 23 Connecticut on the road in the quarterfinals on Nov. 4, 2007. This success earned Georgetown its first NSCAA/adidas #1 Regional Ranking and a series of first National Top 20 rank-ings by the NSCAA/adidas (#17), Soccer America (#16), SoccerBuzz Magazine (#19), and TopDrawerSoccer.com (#20) in addition to a number of national, re-gional, and BIG EAST individual honors, highlighted by two All-Americans and the 2007 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year (Ingrid Wells). While a Hoya assistant, Nolan coor-

dinated recruiting, developed goalkeepers and worked closely with head coach Di-ane Drake in all aspects of preparing the team. He brings a wide range of coaching experience to the Hilltop, having played and coached at various national and inter-national levels. Nolan came to Georgetown in 1999 after spending the 1998 season on the Seton Hall women’s soccer staff, serv-ing as the goalkeeper coach. Prior to his coaching stint at Seton Hall, Nolan was an assistant coach at Farleigh Dickinson Uni-versity during the 1997 fall season. In addition to coaching at George-town, Nolan has helped to develop players for the U-16, U-17, U-19 and U-21 U.S. National teams. Nolan also coaches at the Bethesda (Md.) Soccer Club and currently coaches the U-15 Bethesda Freedom 95. His U-18 Bethesda Excel team made an unprec-edented three-consecutive national cham-pionship appearances. Bethesda Excel was also the Region 1 Champions from 2003-05 and has been ranked among the top club teams in the nation during the stretch. Nolan just finished a four-year stint with the Bethesda Dragons, culminat-ing with a No. 6 national ranking this year. In 2008, Nolan was invited to work with the U-17 Women’s National Team. He traveled to their camps in Vancouver and Seattle and helped with instruction and overseeing daily practices. A member of the National Team Pool in Ireland at the youth level, Nolan came to the United States and played soccer at Seton Hall. A four-year starter, he led the Pirates to four-consecutive NCAA tourna-ment berths and two BIG EAST Confer-ence championships. Selected to the 1987 BIG EAST Conference Tournament team, Nolan was named the BIG EAST Conference Student-Athlete of the Year in 1991. He earned his bachelor’s degree in finance in 1991 and later earned a master of business administration in 1993, also from Seton Hall. Nolan holds a premier national li-cense from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and a United States Soccer Federation “A” li-cense.

Mike Calabretta, entering his seventh season on the Georgetown staff, brings knowledge and coaching experience to the program. His duties include recruiting, scouting, player development, training organization and assisting in all aspects of team preparation. In his time with the Hoyas, Calabretta has helped transform Georgetown into a nationally-respected program and one of the best in the conference. Calabretta holds a USSF National “A” License and a Premier Diploma from the NSCAA and has been involved at the youth level since 2000. Working with the Bethesda Soccer Club, Reston Football Club, and McLean Premier Soccer, Calabretta established himself as a prominent young coach, collecting a record of 81-17-10 in his first two years, highlighted by a European Championship, the world’s third-largest youth tournament. In 2003, Calabretta helped start the Reston Football Club girls program and two years later was ranked as the No. 1 club in Virginia and No. 4 in Region I. During that time, Calabretta led his RFC teams to state and tournament championship titles and top 10 national rankings. Calabretta’s McLean MPS Dragons team was the 2010 USYS Region I Champion and his current squad, Bethesda Dragons, is a 2011 ECNL National Finalist. A member of the Region I Girls Olympic Development Program staff, Calabretta was involved with the Maryland ODP boys serving as a coach from 1999-2000. At both the ODP and club levels, he has helped to develop players for the U.S. youth national and regional teams. Additionally, he was named an associate staff coach for the NSCAA in 2009. Calabretta holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering management from the University of Maryland and a master’s degree in sports industry management from Georgetown. Calabretta and his wife, Anne, currently reside in Clarksburg, Md., with their son and daughter twins Brayden and Brynn.

Naomi Meiburger enters her ninth year with the Hoyas and she was named associate head coach in January 2011 after coming off the most successful season in program history with GU posting a 15-7-2 overall record and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. Georgetown finished the season ranked No. 18 in the country by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Meiburger specializes in working with the Hoya goalkeepers and the defenders. In addition to her on field duties Meiburger also oversees recruiting coordination, travel, equipment, team academics and compliance. Along with Head Coach Dave Nolan and Assistant Coach Mike Calabretta, Meiburger helped secure two NSCAA top 25 recruiting classes (2008, 2010) and one NSCAA top 50 recruiting class (2007). Meiburger was instrumental in training Hoya goalkeeper Jade Higgins (2004-07) and most recently, NSCAA/adidas Mid-Atlantic Region All-American, and Third Team All-BIG EAST selection, Jackie DesJardin (2007-10). During her sophomore season in 2008, DesJardin broke her own school record for season shutouts (11) as she helped Georgetown set the single-season record for fewest goals allowed (14). In 2010 DesJardin led the Hoyas in the NCAA tournament over then-No. 2 Maryland in the second round as well as a shutout of Minnesota in the Sweet Sixteen to give the Hoyas a place in the Elite Eight. Upon graduation DesJardin left for Iceland to continue her career in the professional league there. In addition to coaching at Georgetown, Meiburger has worked with several area club teams including McLean Soccer Club and Reston Football Club. She is currently coaching alongside Calabretta in the Bethesda Soccer Club. Meiburger graduated in 2003 from George Mason, having been a four-year varsity letter winner in women’s soccer. During her time at Mason, she was a NSCAA Regional All-American, SoccerBuzz Regional All-American, First-Team All-Virginia and First-Team All-CAA as well as CAA Goalkeeper of the Year in 2002. Meiburger played in the Women’s United Soccer League from 2000-05 for teams in Virginia and Maryland. Graduating from Mason in 2003 she earned her B.A. in English, was a CAA Scholar-Athlete all four years and received the CAA Commissioner’s Academic Award as a senior. In 2010 Meiburger was a recipient of the BIG EAST Senior Women Administrators scholarship for coaching education which she used to earn her NSCAA Premier Diploma. Currently, Meiburger resides in Reston, Va., with her husband Joe who is an engineer for a local consulting firm.

identity forever.

The BIG EAST has gone through member-ship changes since its birth, but the 2011-12 year marks the conference’s seventh straight with the same 16-member group, making for the nation’s largest Division I-A conference. The BIG EAST Conference’s goals have always been the same. The outstanding perfor-mances of the student-athletes at BIG EAST schools are evidence of the league’s proud tradition of success. The league has always been able to boast that many of its best students are

also its best athletes. The 2010-11 year was no different. Seven BIG EAST student-athletes were named NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners, while 22 earned Capital One Academic All-America recognition. Maya Moore, Connecticut’s women’s basketball standout, won the NCAA Honda-Broderick Cup as the nation’s top female student-athlete and was chosen as the Capital One Academic All-America of the Year. In the athletic arena, BIG EAST student-athletes again enjoyed success on the national stage. The Connecticut men’s basketball team won its third national championship, completing a magical run through five games of the BIG EAST Championship and six wins in the NCAA tournament. The Villanova women’s cross country team won the NCAA title for the second straight year and the ninth time overall. The Notre Dame women’s soccer team won its third NCAA title, while BIG EAST teams reached national cham-pionship games in women’s basketball (Notre Dame) and men’s soccer (Louisville). The BIG EAST placed two teams in the NCAA Women’s Final Four for the second time in the last three years as Connecticut joined Notre Dame in Indianapolis, capping a season in which the Huskies extended their NCAA-record winning streak to 90 games. Individually, BIG EAST student-athletes won five NCAA championships, including an unprec-edented four by Villanova’s Sheila Reid. Reid was the 2010 individual cross country champion, a member of the Wildcats’ winning indoor distance medley relay team and won the 5,000- and 1,500-meter titles in outdoor track & field. Louis-ville’s Matt Hughes, meanwhile, repeated as the

NCAA champion in the 3,000-meter steeple-chase at the NCAA outdoor meet. Moore and Reid joined Notre Dame soc-cer standout Melissa Henderson as winners of Honda Sports Awards as the top performers in their respective sports. Moore also became the first three-time winner of the Wade Trophy as the nation’s top women’s basketball player and joined Villanova lacrosse player Brian Karalunas as winners of the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. BIG EAST football maintained its national

profile as a competitively balanced group. Con-necticut claimed the league’s Bowl Champion-ship Series bid for the first time as the Huskies shared the conference title with Pittsburgh and West Virginia. Six of the league’s eight squads went to bowl games and helped the BIG EAST post a 4-2 bowl record for the second straight year. The BIG EAST became the nation’s largest Division I-A conference in 2005-06 when five new members began competing – the University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, the University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida. BIG EAST institutions reside in nine of the nation’s top 35 largest media markets, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Tampa, Pittsburgh, Hartford, Cincinnati and Milwaukee. With its newest members, BIG EAST markets contain almost one-fourth of all television households in the U.S. When Texas Christian University joins the conference in the 2012-13 academic year, the conference will have a footprint in 30 percent of the nation’s television households. Since opening its doors in 1979, the league has won 31 national championships in six differ-ent sports and 133 student-athletes have won individual national titles. In 2003-04, Connecticut became the first school in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball titles in the same season. In ’02-03, the BIG EAST became the first conference in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s titles in the same year when the Syracuse men and the Connecticut women captured their respective national championships.

In men’s basketball, BIG EAST squads have won four of the last 13 NCAA championships. BIG EAST women’s teams have taken seven of the last 12 NCAA titles. Proactive movement has been a signature strategy for the conference that was born in 1979. The BIG EAST continually turns challenges into opportunities to become stronger. The con-ference currently crowns champions in 24 sports. The BIG EAST became a reality on May 31, 1979, following a meeting of athletic directors from Providence College, St. John’s, Georgetown and Syracuse universities. Seton Hall, Connecti-cut and Boston College completed the original seven school alliance. While the membership has both increased and changed, the focus of the BIG EAST has not wavered. The conference reflects a tradition of broad based programs, led by administrators

and coaches who place a constant emphasis on academic integrity. Its student athletes own sig-nificantly high graduation rates and their record of scholastic achievement notably show a balance between intercollegiate athletics and academics. Any successful organization has had the good fortune to have outstanding leadership. The BIG EAST primarily was the brainchild of Dave Gavitt, who was the conference’s first Com-missioner. Michael Tranghese, the league’s first full-time employee, and for 11 years the associate to Gavitt, became Commissioner in 1990. In his first year, he administered the formation of The BIG EAST Football Conference. John Marinatto, who had served as senior associate commissioner, moved into the Commis-sioner’s chair in 2009 and has continued to steer the conference on its path of success. The league has long been considered a leader in innovative concepts in promotion and publicity, particularly regarding television. Those efforts have resulted in unparalleled visibility for BIG EAST student athletes. The conference has enjoyed longstanding relationships with CBS, ESPN, Inc. and ABC. BIG EAST men’s basketball games are regular sellouts at campus and major public arenas, including the annual men’s BIG EAST Championship in Madison Square Garden. The women’s basketball championship has led all conferences in attendance for the past eight years. Attendance figures also are significant in soccer and baseball. The BIG EAST has its headquarters in Providence where the conference administers to more than 5,500 student-athletes.

THE 2011-12 ACAdEMIC YEAR IS THE 33Rd IN THE HIS-TORY OF THE bIG EAST CONFERENCE AS THE UNIqUE CONSORTIUM MARCHES ON COMPETING AT THE HIGH-EST lEvEl WITH INTEGRITY ANd SPORTSMANSHIP.
