Through a wedding of technologies, Fiocchi and Cyalumehave combined a high-quality target shotshell with a short,cool light stick called the ChemiTracer. That’s right, a smalllight stick emitting cold, chemical light right out there in themiddle of your shot column. There have been many attempts to develop a practicalshotshell tracer round. The last one I can recall was the “Tru-Tracer” shell that contained a highly reflective, metallic ballthat blew the choke tube right out of my Cutts Compensator.Fortunately, that won’t happen with Cyalume’s flexible,

chemical-light capsule. As loaded by Fiocchi, the light capsule is seated on top of the shotcharge and is activated by setback when the shell is fired. In flight, the illuminating capsuletracks the trajectory of the shot column out to 50 or 60 yards and is visible to the shooterand coach in daylight, and highly visible when shot against darker backgrounds like treesor during the early morning and evening hours.

The capsule is biodegradable once on the ground and may provide a splash of cold,chemical light should it strike a rock.

Initially, Fiocchi is introducing the ChemiTracer in a line of 12-gauge ammunition loadedwith No. 7-1/2 shot with No. 8 and 9 shot following. It will be packaged as part of Fiocchi’snew “Canned Heat” line, in which the ammunition is sealed in a air tight container to keepit fresh for long-term storage. This stuff is a hoot!

For at least the last three decades, waterfowl hunters in the United States have beenforced to use non-toxic shotgun shells. The “good old days” of shooting lead shot forducks and geese have been over for quite some time. Still, the search goes on for theultimate replacement for the knockdown power and performance that was available withlead shot. Sure steel shot has improved drastically in the past decades, yet it required amore open choke and it lost velocity and energy quickly once fired.

Thus, many hunters continued to grumble to industry experts about the possibility of anew, better material for non-toxic shot pellets. Well, it seems that Fiocchi USA listenedand put pen to paper so to speak. Quietly, they began to test numerous materials inhopes of developing a metal that would contain the pros of lead shot without being toxicto the environment. Several years were spent in research until finally they devised the keycomponent, a tungsten composite material, that they aptly named Tundra.

Once the material reached the prototype stage, the trials began. First, it had to be testedboth in the field and in the lab. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service conducts extensivetesting on all shot material to be used for waterfowl hunting and it is not a simple process.Fortunately, the new offering from Fiocchi passed the intensive evaluation with flyingcolors. In fact, the Tundra has one of the lowest concentrations among all non toxic

shot materials, making it just about the “greenest” shot on the market. Additionally,Fiocchi’s Tundra nontoxic shotgun shells are paired with non-toxic primers, unlike manycompetitors.

The benefits of Tundra are many. Obviously, it is an improvement over steel, but it comesas close to lead as any nontoxic material on the market. First and foremost, Tundra allowsthe hunter to utilize any choke constriction. By comparison, steel has warnings thatadvise hunters not to use full choke when shooting steel shot shells. Thus with Tundra,that old favorite, family heirloom shotgun with the full choke can now be safely fired inthe marsh again! Tundra retains its softness and does not get brittle like normal tungsten,bismuth or steel. Since it deforms (due to being soft) it will not damage barrels even thoseconstructed from Damascus steel no matter what the choke (even full turkey chokes).Now imagine using that old side by side shotgun of grandpa’s and crushing ducks atsixty to seventy yards.

Another by product of Tundra is that it is denser than all other shot material, thus it carriesmore energy and retains that down range as well. This makes longer “killing” shotspossible, a great option on late season educated birds. Besides having more energy orknockdown power, the density of Tundra shot helps create a more effective pattern inmost guns. Mike Love, Fiocchi area manager, gave a good example of the characteristicof Tundra shot. Mike explained that common steel shot is very brittle as are other non toxicshot materials. Yet, he advised that a Tundra pellet can be easily deformed by pressingon it with a common ink pen. No more damaged teeth when eating cooked meat shouldthe hunter miss a pellet when cleaning birds!

The engineers at Fiocchi knew they were on to a great discovery with the Tundra compositematerial. During the R & D process, they developed two different weights or densitiesof the material, 9.5 and 12.5 g. For comparison, the 9.5 g density is 123 % heavier thansteel, while the 12.5 g version is 160% heavier than steel and 115% heavier than lead!Now imagine the improvement that will have on your hunting success!

It goes without saying that since Tundra is denser or heavier in weight than steel, it will nothave the blazing muzzle velocity advertised by steel loads. Mike Love stated that typicalvelocity in the Tundra 9.5g, 2 ¾ inch, 12 gauge load will be approximately 1340 fps. TheTundra 12.5g version lists 1350 fps in the 2 ¾ inch 12 gauge shell. Moving up to a threeinch 12 gauge load, the Tundra 9.5g has a velocity of 1350 fps, while its denser brotherthe 12.5g offering lists 1280 fps velocity. The 12.5g is simply a purer material, thus moredense in composite than the 9.5g. Currently, only twelve gauge loads are offered, althoughtwenty gauge ammo is expected in 2011.

“Hunter reaction so far has been favorable,” advised Mike. Sales initially exceededproduction, thus production has been increased at the Fiocchi plant in Ozark, Missouri.

Although, demand is still high Fiocchi has met the sales quotas, so that Tundra is currentlyavailable from coast to coast. Obviously, the Tundra shotgun shells are not in the sameprice category as steel shot. Yet, when a hunter compares the various premium non-toxicshotgun shells, i.e. bismuth, tungsten, etc… Tundra shells are competitively priced. Stillwhen a hunter compares performance b etween the competition and Fiocchi Tundra,everything else falls by the wayside! Impress your hunting partners and your Lab, shootsome Tundra this season!

Fiocchi Ammo - An Interview with Carlo Fiocchi

The Godfather. The Sopranos. Pop culture’s presentation of Italian family businesses here in the US – particularly ones thatsomehow involve firearms - isn’t always flattering or glamorous.But is this presentation realistic? Or could the reality of a multi-generational Italian family business actually be better than themovies? Better yet, is there one that could even be called a true

American success story? To answer those questions, the folks atLuckyGunner.com recently caught up with Carlo Fiocchi, a 4thgeneration Italian ammunition manufacturer. What we learnedsurprised us…and if you’ve watched either The Godfather orThe Sopranos like we have, then his answers about Fiocchi Ammo will really surprise you too.

In this article, Mr. Fiocchi opens up about his family’s historyduring the allied bombing of the Fiocchi’s family plants innorthern Italy during World War II, how the Fiocchi family thinksabout business and ammunition, and even what Mr. Fiocchithinks about his American competitors like Remington andWinchester. . . . so let’s get started, capisci?

Italian Heritage

Through gatherings like the annual family Christmas dinner, which they still observe tothis day, Carlo Fiocchi was steeped in family legend and reared in the vocabulary of smallarms ammunition from a very young age. “My first memories of life are i n the ammunitionbusiness, from as early as 3-4 years old,” Mr. Fiocchi, now 54, warmly recalls through athick Italian accent. Fiocchi Munizioni, the 100% privately held Italian parent company, hashad its share of setbacks since it was founded in 1876 by Giulio Fiocchi.During World War II, he explains, “we were basically occupied after 1943 by the Germansand the plants suffered tremendously f rom air raids.” Thankfully, as the 2nd and 3rdgeneration of Fiocchi’s have told him, “the family decided to reach into what was left of their savings, pour it back into the business, and rebuild – which was not atypical for otherEuropean family businesses at the time,” recounts Mr. Fiocchi.While the destruction wrought during WWII almost eliminated the Fiocchi family fromthe ammunition business, their resilience and desire to rebuild created somewhat of anopportunity for them: new factories, new technology, new equipment.

Engineers at Heart

Mr. Fiocchi explains that while his passion is in sales, marketing, and building his brand inthe marketplace, his family has traditionally been one of engineers: “My family membersare almost all engineers. We produce or design the vast majority of our own machines inour internal design shop. Our engineering department creates the specs, the dies, andthe prototypes.”The customers, he points out, are ultimately the benefactors of this product-centricapproach. For example, Fiocchi is NATO-certified which means they can supply all theNATO militaries and police forces: “This is an advantage for us because our factory canproduce ammunition that is proven.” When asked if that means ammunition sold to theUnited States civilian market is of similar quality, Mr. Fiocchi responded, “Yes, they areran from the same production lines. It makes no sense [to split them up] if you considerthe costs between making it well and not so well.”

Fiocchi America

In 1983, Carlo Fiocchi and his family decided to bring the Italian heritage and NATO-specquality of Fiocchi Ammunition to the American domestic market. From 1983 until 1996 Mr.Fiocchi worked to create a beachhead in America for their product before taking a breakto consult for third-parties in the firearms and optics markets. As the reigns passed in2005 from the 3rd generation (who still consult for the company from retirement) to the4th generation, Mr. Fiocchi’s younger cousins called him back into the business to leadthe US market sales.

Since that time Mr. Fiocchi has been a busy man: “We have grown over 500% since 2005.” At a time when many employers are cutting their payrolls, this growth has been good for Americans in Ozark, Missouri where Fiocchi America employs about 90% of their workforce (the rest are in Nevada). We asked what percentage of Fiocchi ammo that is solddomestically in the United States is actually loaded here, the answer to which you cansee in the breakdown over on the right. In a nutshell, more than 75% of the ammunitionsold by Fiocchi in the U.S. is loaded here in the U.S., a statistic not widely known in thearms industry.

After only a short time, anyone who speaks with Mr. Fiocchi can tell that he has acommanding grip on the domestic ammunition market; his prestigious Italian speechalmost melts into boyish excitement when he starts discussing new product development,the speed at which markets currently change, and the measures Fiocchi America employsto meet those changes head on. However, his tone of voice became almost reverentialwhen he spoke about his American competitors like Remington and Winchester, “who Irespect immensely.”

Many Americans may not realize it, but Fiocchi actually has a long-standing partnershipwith Hornady. “We have a great relationship with Hornady. They are a family business alsoand I think our cultures of honor and integrity are a great match. We both have a familyreputation to uphold and besides, they just make a top notch product.” While Fiocchicurrently loads Hornady projectiles into a variety of cartridges, Mr. Fiocchi recalled howthey started by loading the Hornady V-max bullet into the 5.7x28mm cartridge for FNHerstal and quickly moved the partnership into more product lines. Additionally, Fiocchiloads Sierra projectiles into a number of their center-fire rifle cartridges.

The Future of Fiocchi

When we asked Mr. Fiocchi where he wanted to be in 10 years, he said with a laugh, “At thebeach, but that is never going to happen because it isn’t in my nature.” When we asked Mr.Fiocchi to tell us where he envisioned Fiocchi USA in ten years, he proceeded to launchinto a long list of initiatives and product launches, centered mostly around the non-toxicmarket, that he estimated will keep him busy for at least seven to ten years. Here is a brief overview of what to look for from Fiocchi:

Law-Enforcement Product Line - Fiocchi has developed a frangible FMJ round with acompound core (instead of lead) that is approved by the Fish & Wildlife Service which theyplan to build a law-enforcement ammunition line around.

Reloading Guide for Non-Toxic Ammunition - Fiocchi is currently developing a thoroughat-home reloading guide for non-toxic ammunition because working with non-toxic primersrequires unconventional combinations of components and assembly processes. Look forthis to be released to the US market in the next 6-12 months.

Cowboy Action Product Line - Fiocchi plans to release a complete line of cowboy actionproducts by 2011, starting with 45 Long Colt, 44 Special, 32 S&W Long, and 30-30.

When asked about the future of Fiocchi as a family business, he disclosed, “Since it is a100% family business, matters are always politically delicate. . . . but the upside is that

instead of focusing on the next quarter, we focus on the next generation when it comes toinvestments, strategies, and marketing.” He seemed convinced that their current productlines, combined with their cutting edge non-toxic innovation, will keep the next generationof Fiocchi’s with plenty of work on their hands, “We actually have 5th generation Fiocchi’sworking externally right now, even though none of them currently work in the familybusiness” (which is apparently part of their secret formula to holding the family businessin tact across generations).Oh . . . . and Mr. Fiocchi’s answer to our question of how he spends his days? Remember,this is a 4th generation Italian ammunition manufacturer who fits the part: tall, dark,handsome, thick accent, and an expensive pin-stripe suit. We expected to hear about latemeetings in cigar-filled rooms with fellow international arms dealers, leisurely flights onprivate planes to private yachts, or perhaps even skydiving and driving Formula-One cars.Instead: “I don’t sleep a lot,” he replies and then proceeds to layout a schedule that usuallystarts with emails at 6am in his office and ends around 1am with phone calls to his cousinsin Lecco, Italy discussing component production, supply chain management, and newproduct innovations. As the interview drew to a close, it began to make more sense. Thisis a man on a mission – a man with his name on the box.

Introduced first in 9mm, the 93 Grain EMB bullet is made from an alloy of copperand bronze. The bullet is one piece, so there is no core-jacket separation. As such,penetration is good and consistent. The light-weight bullet has very high velocity andimpact energy. The combination of impact at high velocity, engineered expansion, andhigh weight retention (no fragmentation and no core/jacket separation) translate toreduced over-penetration and high energy transfer. The Fiocchi EMB would make anexcellent choice where over-penetration is a concern. The projectile and primer are alsolead and heavy metal free.

Fiocchi Frangile Non-Toxic Line: Our cutting edge line utilizes SinterFire™ frangible, lead free bullets. Of particular interestfor use in indoor ranges, steel plate shooting matches, and by police departments fortactical training, these bullets literally crumble to dust upon impact with hard surfaces.The copper/tin composite SinterFire™ bullet (containing no jacket or plating) yields theproven benefits of functional reliability (due to the bullet’s molded-in taper crimp), uniformdimensions, weight, superior accuracy, and repeatable performance.

Generalizations on Pellet Lethality and Pattern DensityBallistic Products “Statistics and Pellet Ballistics”

“Generalizations that years of experience and laboratory and fi eld testing support” Assumes that the pellets in a given load are the same size and fired at same velocities

1) Most lethal short-range pellet is soft lead shot- Chilled lead shot, .5 to 2% antimony- Deforms upon impact delivering more energy to target- Reduces over penetration (passing through target)- Deforms upon firing (setback) creating better short-range patterns due to fliers- Retains sufficient velocity at short-range for adequate penetration- Poor mid to long-range patterns- Deforms upon firing (setback) creating a poor ballistic coefficient- Patterns are less dense and inconsistent at mid to long-range due to fliers- Loses velocity quickly due to poor ballistic coefficient- Poor mid to long-range penetration

Fiocchi Golden Pheasant Line

The best we can make for pheasant hunters-that is our Golden Pheasant. With along-standing history of successful bird hunts, our Golden Pheasant loads combinehard, nickel-plated shot with powder and primer combinations to ensure consistentperformance in the most demanding hunting conditions. We go the extra step with nickelplating. To nickel plate the shot, it must first be copper plated to get the nickel to stick.So, nickel-plated shot is like copper plated shot, but harder so the benefits are greater.The major benefit of nickel-plated shot is increased surface hardness which means thepellets stay rounder, fly truer at longer range to deliver good patterns, cut through feathers,and penetrate deeper for quick, humane kills. To you, that means better, tighter patterns and better penetrati on. Fiocchioffers high-velocity (1325 f.p.s) buckshot loads i n 00 and #4 buck for hunting, homedefense, or law enforcement. Fiocchi Aero Slug Line

Fiocchi’s use of the distinctive attached wad makes sure our slug arrives on target. Theywork well in smooth and rifled barrels to deliver excellent accuracy. Al l of our slugsare full-bore for maximum impact. Our heavy-hitter is a 1 oz. at 1560 f.p.s., 2 ¾”. Wealso have two lower-recoil slugs (both also 2 ¾”), a 1 oz. at 1150 f.p.s. and a 7/8 oz. at1300 f.p.s. Any of these would be perfect for hunting, law enforcement, and three guncompetitions.

Fiocchi Wads

Only the best wads from Baschieri & Pellagri and Gualandi are used i n our Exacta Targetshotshells. These wads contain plastic elastomers that help absorb recoil and sealgases to help ensure that the shell is softer shooting and that patterns are optimized (noblow-by). 7/8 Ounce LoadsWe have been loading 7/8 ounce target and training loads for many years. Many shootersare surprised to see how well the loads pattern and break targets. They expect thelow recoil, and Fiocchi delivers. This load performs well even in the semi-automaticgas-operated shotguns. With velocities similar to many heavier loads, you won’t have toworry about adjusting your leads.

1 Ounce Loads

Fiocchi is an industry leader in the one once loads. Long before many shooters wouldconsider them, we pioneered the load and shooters began to experience the lower recoiland new-found confidence in the lighter loads. Fiocchi offers a wide selection of 1 ounceloads from our economical Shooting Dynamics selections to the Interceptor Spreader.Velocities from 1150 to 1400 f.p.s., Fiocchi offers a solution to any target problem.Cushioned shot cup wads, clean powders, magnum hard shot, and reli able primerscombine to make sure you and your gun keep breaking targets all day long.

1 1/16 Ounce Loads

For those shooters not quite ready to move to 1 ounce, you may find a sweet spot inbetween the 1 and 1 1/8 ounce you are used to shooting. With less recoil than a 1 1/8but more pellets than a 1 ounce load, this might just be what you are looking for. We areconfident you will find excellent patterns and broken targets as the reward for trying thisinnovative load. Thorough research and development resulted in 93% patterns with animproved-modified choke at 32 yards.

1 1/8 Ounce Loads

Long the standard for target shooting, Fiocchi offers many favorites you may well befamiliar with for Trap and Sporting Clays. You may have already shot our well-known WhiteRino at 1250 f.p.s.-great for handicap trap and many sporting clays presentations. Manyshooters tell us that our heavy 1 1/8 ounce loads kick less than the other brands. If lesspower will do the trick, try our Light White Rino, still 1 1/8 oz. but with less velocity (andrecoil) at 1175 f.p.s. You expect the hard shot, shot cup cushioned wads, clean powders,and reliable primers in our best target loads and the Rinos deliver.

For serious Olympic Trap, Double Trap, and Skeet shooting, our International loads are theright tool for the task. The best components combine to deliver the consistent, optimumperformance these shooters expect. 24 grams of hard magnum shot at 1350 f.p.s.

Low Recoil Training Loads

Used by militaryre-enactors, in ceremonies, for training exercises, in theatrical productions and huntingdog training, blank ammunition provide the report and realism of conventional ammunitionwithout projectile. Fiocchi’s popper Blanks (offered in 1,000 round bulk packaging) arethe most popular and successful loads on the US market for use in hunting and dogtraining competitions. Our Rubber Buckshot and Rubber Baton rounds are an idealresource for LE use in the less than lethal field as they are for game management whenthe objective is to deter the presence of an animal more than the elimination of the same.
