Defiance College, founded in 1850, is a private liberal arts college affiliated with the United Church of Christ, providing outstanding academic programs and co-curricular activities for a student body of nearly 1,100 students. Building on a strong foundation of more than a century of educating citizens for lives of leadership and service, Defiance College pro-vides opportunities for its students to make a meaningful impact on society in the twenty-first century with an educational experience of engagement.

The Princeton Review features Defiance College in Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community In-volvement. Defiance College has been named for five-consecutive years to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service, and for the past two years DC has been named a Military Friendly School for providing significant benefits and services to veterans. Defiance College is also one of 119 U.S. colleges and universities selected by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to receive its Community Engagement Classification.

The McMaster School for Advancing Humanity was created to pro-vide opportunities for DC undergraduate students and faculty to more closely examine global issues and how they affect the hu-man condition. Faculty and students conducted projects during the 2010-2011 year in Belize, Cambodia and New Orleans. The School serves as the umbrella for the Service Leadership Program de-veloping leadership communication, conflict resolution and cultural awareness; the Carolyn M. Small Honors Program providing op-portunities for students to participate in an honors curriculum; and Project 701, a student-run nonprofit organization.

Defiance College offers students a world of opportunities to en-hance their academic experience, from cultural visits in world-class cities across the continent, to international trips through the DC Global program, all of which open minds to new ideas and cultures and provide insights to help in competition for jobs and graduate school placement.

Defiance College is also home of the Hench Autism Studies Pro-gram, an innovative, multi-faceted program designed to specifically address the late adolescent years and the transition of individuals with autism to adulthood.

Student life is an important part of a Defiance College education. Activities include student government, musical and theater groups, religious organizations, intercultural organizations, honor societies, special interest groups, intramural athletics, and four Greek chap-ters including a service fraternity.

As a national leader in the field of service learning and engage-ment, DC teaches students to take the knowledge they have gained and use it to change lives for the better – in their communities, in distant villages, and in their careers. Approximately 10,000 men and women across the globe claim Defiance College as their alma mater, and they excel in all walks of life.

John Hartpence enters his fifth season at the helm of the Defiance College cross country program, and has seen steady improvement from both the men’s and women’s teams since his arrival in July, 2007. Last season, the DC harriers were honored with four All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference performers, two HCAC Runner-of the-Week awards, two All-Academic HCAC and two All-HCAC Sportsmanship awards winners.

Hartpence came to Defiance after serving as the head track and field coach at Dickinson College for seven years, where he guided the women’s team to six Cen-tennial Collegiate Conference championships, and saw the men’s team earn five runner-up finishes.

In addition to the teams’ success, Hartpence guided his Red Devils to 65 individual conference champion-ships during his tenure at Dickinson, and was voted as the USTFCCAA Mid-East Women’s Indoor Coach of the Year in both 2002 and 2003

Hartpence earned his undergraduate degree in physi-cal education from Cortland College, before complet-ing a master’s of science degree in health and human performance from the University of Montana in 1996. He is certified as a Level II Track and Field Coach for throwing and jumping events.

GRANT RUSSO Assistant CoachGrant Russo joined the Yellow Jackets’ coaching staff as a graduate assistant for the cross country and track and field teams in January, 2010, and is entering his second season working with the Defiance College runners.

Russo graduated from Denison University in 2009 with a degree in biology, and spent four years as a member of DU’s cross country and track and field teams. He was a four-year letterwinner and standout performer for the Big Red, earning four-consecutive All-North Coast Athletic Conference selections. Rus-so was named the NCAC Runner of the Year in 2008, after setting the conference’s championship meet re-cord in the 8k and qualifying for the NCAA Div. III National Championships.

As a member of the Yellow Jackets’ coaching staff, Russo works with athletes primarily in mid to long-distance events, while pursuing a master’s degree in business administration with a concentration in lead-ership.
