At the midway, fairgoers can expect some new ride options this year, including “Gravitron,” a quick-spin-ning ride that holds riders by centrifugal force. A tractor parade is scheduled to regularly en-tertain the crowds through-out the week, and compe-tition in the talent contest is Monday and Tuesday nights. The top two winners in each of the three age cate-gories of “pre-teen,” “teen” and “open” will qualify for the finals Saturday night; all shows begin at 6 p.m. Following tradition, the grandstand events promise noise and excitement, be-ginning Monday at 7 p.m. with the motocross show. Demolition derbies are the scheduled as grand-stand shows at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Fri-day and Saturday nights. Catering to popular demand, the Wednesday night demo derby event will also include a lawn mower

derby. Drivers of the custom-ized rider mowers are al-lowed three tips before they are disqualified from the derby and are out if they lose a wheel during the event. “Last year was our first time doing it, and it was a big hit with the fans,” said John King, a director with the Agricultural Society that runs the fair. On Thursday night at 7 p.m., the tractor pull re-turns to the fair, and if

enough registrations are re-ceived, a powder puff demo will be held Sunday. A 5K race is scheduled Sunday at 8 a.m. The cost is $17 for runners ages 17 and under and adults pay $25. Races will begin and end at Ahlberg Hall, with run-ners traveling on a path that goes through multiple terrains and has many twists and turns. Runners will be awarded first-, second- and third-

Stage acts and the arts are major draws for the Da-kota County Fair, and this year that will be even more the case as a new group has a slate of performers and artists prepared to enter-tain. The Dakota County Re-gional Arts Collaborative, a collection of area residents banded together to promote the arts, will have its first major project – Showcasing the Arts in Dakota County – in action during the fair. The lineup includes sev-eral performers from talent-ed young singers to a Mark Twain impersonator ready to entertain visitors at Da-kota City Heritage Village. In addition to the per-formances in the gazebo and the Free Entertainment Tent south of Ahlberg Hall in the 1900s-era village, there will be a range of art-

ists with easels and canvases set up throughout the fair-grounds creating art. “Our goal is to nurture the arts in all Dakota Coun-ty communities so they can better serve our diverse residents, and to create the highest possible level of eco-nomic growth and the most robust cultural environment possible,” LaDonna Boyd, the group’s chairperson, said. The collaborative was formed after a few brain-storming meetings were held last fall. With a grant from the Metropolitan Re-gional Arts Council, it tar-geted a showcase at the fair as a first project. The entertainment line-up includes: • The Mississippi Valley Orchestra at 8 p.m., Tues-day, Aug. 9, gazebo; • Mark Twain imperson-ator Michael Bateson, at 4 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 11;

• The Prime Time Players at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 13; and • The Play’s the Thing Productions, Schoolhouse Rock Live Jr. at 3 p.m., Sun-day, Aug. 14. It’s a lineup that Dakota City coordinators say is wel-come to complement an al-ready robust entertainment schedule (see box). The collaborative’s aim is to provide a platform for people to discover the di-verse range of art being cre-ated in Dakota County. One of the hidden gems people will find at the fair will be the 35-year-old, West St. Paul-based Minne-sota Valley Orchestra. The orchestra often takes on a bold repertoire, including works by Mahler, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, but their fair fare will trend more whimsical. Margaret Houlton, pres-

ident and violinist, said the group will play some Span-ish dances, water music and show tunes during its 45-minute set. Houlton said the all-volunteer group will have about 22 players, ranging in age from about 20-60, rep-resenting all the sounds of the orchestra. Former music teacher at Sibley High School Ed Schlueter formed the group in the mid-70s as a way for graduates of the school to find a music outlet for their talent. “It is a great atmosphere for people who want to play large smyphonic works,” Houlton said. “Most of them play because they like the repertoire.” She says the instrumen-talists are so good at their craft they will only need two rehearsals in prepara-tion for the show. “Most of them play on a regular basis,” Houlton said. One of the group’s an-

nual gigs – performing with a ballet production of “The Nutcracker” – ended this year, so it is timely that the collaborative is providing them with another outlet for these accomplished mu-sicians. The collaborative hopes to give more people the same opportunity, starting with the fair and maturing with a formal strategic plan-ning process this fall. People who are interest-ed in joining in the group’s work can attend the first annual meeting of the Da-kota County Regional Arts Collaborative from 1-3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, at the Lakeville Area Arts Center. For more information, contact LaDonna Boyd at [email protected].
