SPORTS MEDICINEComprehensive medical careis coordinated for all Bobcatstudent-athletes under thedirection of a team physicianand a staff of nationally certi-fied and state licensed athletictrainers. Undergraduate stu-dent interns from the athletictraining education programassist the professional staff intheir duties while gainingvaluable hands-on experiencein the allied healthcare field. With a physician referral, thestaff is also available to treatGeorgia College faculty, staff, and students for their outpa-tient rehabilitation.

Recognizing that someinjuries and illnesses are inevitable, the professionalstaff works under the supervision of the team physicianto diagnose those conditions, to provide initial treat-ment and follow-up care including any rehabilitation, and to counsel students on available treatment options.By providing quality care as early as possible, student-athletes are able return to the field of play as soon aspossible while decreasing their risk of reinjury.

Services in the athletic training room include state of

the art modalities such asultrasound, electrical musclestimulation, and laser as wellas other treatment methods toalleviate pain and swelling, increase strength and flexibili-ty, and decrease risk of re-injury in the athletes treatedthere. Now entering its 20th year of existence in 2009-10, the PeachBelt Conference has become one of the elite Division II conferencesin the nation. Since its inception in 1990-91, the Peach Belt has devel-oped a consistent history of excellence which continues to this daywith 28 national championships and 25 national finalist

Starting with only two championships in 1991, in men’s andwomen’s basketball, the conference has expanded to 13 champi-onship sports with the addition of women’s golf in the fall of 2009.

The conference traces its roots back to November of 1988when 11 schools first met in Greenville, S.C. to form a Division IIconference. Following a second meeting on Dec. 3, 1989, five ofthose 11 schools, plus two others, formed the Peach Belt andbegin play in fall 1990.

The Peach Belt was less than a year old before capturing anational championship. The Columbus State golf team took thehonor by winning the 1992 national crown, the first of three golfchampionships the Cougars own. One year later, the Landermen's tennis team began their record-breaking run of eightstraight national titles, the first PBC dynasty. Since then, USCAmen's golf has won three straight national titles from 2004-06while AASU women's tennis has captured four titles overall.

The 2008-09 season was among the conference’s most memo-rable. The Armstrong Atlantic State men’s and women’s tennis teamsboth won their respective national championships – for the secondyear in a row; a feat only done once before in college tennis. In addi-tion, the Augusta State men’s basketball team became the first con-ference program to make back-to-back trips to the NCAA Elite Eight,Armstrong Atlantic became the first PBC volleyball team ever to

advance to the Elite Eight and the North Georgia softball team wasranked #1 in the nation and reached the World Series.

The seven charter members of the conference were ArmstrongAtlantic State University, Columbus State University, Francis MarionUniversity, Georgia College, Lander University, USC Aiken and USCUpstate. The name Peach Belt Athletic Conference was adopted inJanuary of 1990 and modified to Peach Belt Conference in May of2000.

Augusta State joined the conference in 1991 and UNC Pembrokebecame the ninth member on July 1, 1992.
