UNDERSTANDING THE GAME OF

WATER POLOWater Polo can be a confusing game for spectators. The whistle is constantly blowing and the play never stops, even when someone is ejected for a penalty. In addition, there are many misconceptions about the game, including how the players keep their horses swimming. Well hang in there, because the following information should help to make the picture much clearer.

General Information1. Each team has six field players and a goalie.2. Field players can only use one hand to touch the ball, goalies two.3. Games consist of 7-minute quarters for club divisions, 8-minute quarters for varsity divisions.4. The object of the game is to score by placing the ball completely in the goal. Players may move the ball by swim-ming or passing.5. Teams may substitute after a goal is scored, during a time-out or during the play from the ejection area.6. Each team receives three time-outs and one 20-second time-out per game.7. Shots blocked out of bounds by defensive players result in the defensive team receiving possession. If a defender uses two hands to block a shot, the offensive team receives a penalty shot.

FoulsWhen an infraction of the rules occurs, the referee will point in the direction of the team taking possession, while blowing his whistle. The ball is put back into play with an action called a free throw. This means the player gets three seconds of free time to throw the ball to an-other teammate or swim it up the pool. A player cannot shoot his free throw unless outside the five-meter line. If the ball is not put into play within three seconds, the other team takes possession.

Fouls can be ordinary or major. Ordinary fouls are best understood as minor fouls. For example, a defender may reach over an opponent’s back to get at the ball while facing away from the goal. The penalty for an ordinary foul is a free throw for the opposing team.

Major fouls are more severe and are penalized accord-ingly. For example, when a defender fouls an opponent too aggressively, or from behind when the opponent is facing the goal, the defender is ejected for 20 seconds (players may reenter the game if their team recovers the ball before the ejection time is up, or if the opposing team scores). When the foul occurs within five meters of the goal and the referee believes the player had a high chance of scoring, the opposition shoots a penalty shot. Major fouls can also occur through disrespect to the referee or when a player interferes with an opponent’s free throw. Players may only receive three major fouls before elimination.

If all of this has you totally confused, just sit back and enjoy the game. The easiest way to follow the play is by watching the scoreboard. If your team is ahead at the end, great! If not, well consider that you have expanded your horizons. When the game is over, you can at least explain to your friends that the horses never get wet.

Affiliate OrganizationsThere are many organizations affiliated with the sport of wa-ter polo and the landscape can be somewhat confusing when trying to sort out which entity offers what services. To make matters a little easier to understand, the organizations can be divided into two basic groups: scholastic and non scholastic. The scholastic organizations are those that have some affilia-tion with the educational system. These include college, high school, junior college and middle school teams, as well as their respective administrative bodies that offer competitive leagues and support. In this category you would find state sanctioning organizations, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the National Association for Intercollegiate Athlet-ics (NAIA) and all the collegiate conferences recognized by the NCAA or NAIA. Each individual organization operates independently with its own governing structure.

The NCAA and the NAIA are two organizations that serve a unique position. They each provide a supervisory role for their member schools. The colleges and universities that are members of each respective organization choose to establish and follow a set of guidelines that govern competition. Spe-cifically, these guidelines include eligibility, academic progress for their student-athletes, competitive rules, championship guidelines, recruiting and financial aid.

Schools that become members of one of these organizations agree to abide by the rules and principles established within the organization. The NCAA and NAIA provide oversight for the varsity teams on campus, not the collegiate clubs.

In addition to the NCAA and NAIA there are conferences that operate for the purpose of arranging competition for their member institutions. Some conferences, like the Big East, Mountain West or Atlantic Coast Conferences, handle several sports, while others like the CWPA handle a single sport. With respect to water polo, all collegiate clubs that are eligible for the National Collegiate Club Championship are members of the CWPA. To understand the difference between the league and the NCAA or NAIA, think of the conference on a smaller scale performing similar functions for its member institutions. The conference works with the national governing bodies (NCAA and NAIA) to help provide competitive opportunities and services, yet remains an independent organization with its own governing system and budget.

Non-scholastic organizations include all other entities that provide the opportunity for people to be involved in the sport outside of an educational institution. These include YMCAs, Boys & Girls Clubs, parks & recreation programs, privately organized clubs, township/city programs and independent organizations like American Water Polo. United States Water Polo fits under this category as well, serving as the National Governing Body for the sport. They are also responsible for supporting and training Olympic teams for men and women.

For more information about any specific organization, contact the CWPA office at 610-277-6787.

History of the CWPAThe Collegiate Water Polo Association originally began as the Mid Atlantic Conference, founded by Dick Russell (Bucknell University swimming & water polo coach) in the 1970’s. Its founding membership included teams from Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York.

The management and oversight of the organization relied on volunteer coaches until 1990, when a commissioner was hired to perform basic scheduling for the 15-member teams in the league. Officiating assignments were performed at the time by an independent organization called the Eastern Water Polo Referees Association (EWPRA).

The next major milepost occurred in 1993, when the Southern and New England Conferences merged into the Mid-Atlantic. The new structure combined all of the varsity teams in the East, along with the few sport clubs in existence at that time. During the 1995 season, the organization experienced a strike by its officiating corps. This strike ultimately resulted in the organization establishing its own officiating bureau, assuming responsibility for all of its officiating assignments. The CWPA hired Tere Ma as its inaugural Director of Officials and Loren Bertocci as its first Technical Director.

Few changes were made to this structure until 2006, when the conference established a Technical Committee. One of these members, Ed Reed, initiated the CWPA’s first online education program in 2007 for referees using video clips.

The Collegiate Water Polo Association is divided into two classes, varsity and sport club. Each class of membership is then divided into divisions based on geography.

Varsity ClassThe top four teams from each division championship move on to the CWPA Eastern Championship. The first place team at the Eastern Championship receives the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA National Championship in December.

Northern Division Teams play a single round robin schedule within the division to determine regular season rankings. All teams attend the division championship, with the seeding determined by the won/loss records during the season.

Southern Division Teams play a double round robin schedule within their re-spective regions (East or West) to determine seeding for the championship, in which everyone attends.

The top four teams from each division championship move on to the CWPA Eastern Championship. The first place team at the CWPA Eastern Championship qualifies for the NCAA National Championship in December.

Sport Club ClassTeams are divided into divisions, based on geography. The top team from each division championship qualifies for either the National Collegiate Club Championship or the Division III National Collegiate Club Championship.

Atlantic Division Teams play a single round robin schedule. All teams attend the championship tournament, with seeding based on the regular season won/loss records.

Big Ten Division Teams play a single round robin schedule over two weekends plus additional seeding games drawn at random. All teams attend the championship tournament, with seeding based on the regular season won/loss records.

Florida DivisionTeams play a single round robin schedule over two weekends plus additional seeding games drawn at random. All teams attend the championship tournament, with seeding based on the regular season won/loss records.

Great Lakes Division Teams play four opponents drawn at random during the first weekend to seed for the championship. All teams attend the championship tournament, with seeding based on the regu-lar season won/loss records.

Great Plains Division Teams play a single round robin schedule over two weekends plus additional seeding games drawn at random. All teams attend the championship tournament, with seeding based on the regular season won/loss records.

Heartland Division Teams play a single round robin schedule over two weekends plus additional seeding games drawn at random. All teams attend the championship tournament, with seeding based on the regular season won/loss records.

Mid-Atlantic Division The Western Region teams play a single round robin schedule over two weekends plus additional seeding games drawn at random. The Eastern Region teams play a single round robin schedule within their region. All teams attend the champion-ship tournament, which is separated into two groups, with the top eight teams from the regular season playing in one group and the remaining teams in a second group. Seeding at the championship alternates between the regions, with the first seed awarded to the region that won the prior season.

Missouri Valley DivisionTeams play a single round robin schedule over two weekends plus additional seeding games drawn at random. All teams

attend the championship tournament, with seeding based on the regular season won/loss records.

New England Division Teams play a single round robin schedule over two weekends plus additional seeding games drawn at random. All teams attend the championship tournament, with seeding based on the regular season won/loss records.

New York Division The Western Region teams play a single round robin schedule within their region, plus additional seeding games drawn at random. The Eastern Region teams play a single round robin schedule within their region. All teams then attend a crossover event where they compete against four of the teams from the opposite region. Every team competes in the championship, with the seeds based on won/loss records. North Atlantic Division Teams play a double round robin schedule within their re-gions over two weekends. All teams attend the championship. Seeding at the championship alternates between the regions, with the first seed awarded to the region that won the prior season.

Northwest Division Teams play a single round robin schedule over two weekends plus additional seeding games drawn at random. All teams attend the championship tournament, with seeding based on the regular season won/loss records.

Opponents are selected ran-domly during the cross-regional weekend. All teams attend the championship tournament, which is separated into two groups. The top eight teams from the regular season play in one group to establish a division champion and the remaining four teams play round robin to determine final placing. Seed-ing at the championship is based on won/loss records from the regular season.

Sierra Pacific Division Teams play a single round robin schedule over two weekends. All teams attend the championship tournament, with seeding based on the regular season won/loss records.

Southeast Division Teams play a single round robin schedule over two weekends plus additional seeding games drawn at random. All teams attend the championship tournament, with seeding based on the regular season won/loss records.

Tie Breaker System - All SituationsIf at any time two teams are tied in record or in goal differ-entials as you walk through the tie breaker system below, the result of their head-to-head competition breaks the tie Tie Breaker System - Two TeamsIf the teams each beat one another, the goal differential in their games is used to break the tie. If the goal differential in their contests against one another is the same, the total of goals scored against each other is used. If the total of goals scored between the teams is equal, the differential for all common opponents seeded higher is used. If no common opponents are seeded higher, the goal differential against the highest seeded common opponent is used.

Tie Breaker System - Three or More Teams (for seeding championships)If more than two teams are tied in won/loss records, goal differentials among the teams tied serves as the tiebreaker. If two teams are tied in goal differentials, head-to-head com-petition breaks the tie. If the goal differential in their con-tests against one another for all teams is the same, the total of goals scored against each other is used. If the total of goals scored between the teams is equal, the goal differential between common opponents seeded higher will be used to determine ranking. This may require averaging the goal dif-ferential per game if the number of games between common opponents is unequal. Should teams be tied in won/loss re-cord and they have not played each other, goal differentials against common opponents that are seeded above them are used. If no common opponents are seeded higher, the goal differential against the highest seeded common opponent is used to break the tie.

(for advancement w/in championships)If more than two teams are tied in won/loss records, goal differentials among the teams tied serves as the tiebreaker. If the goal differential in their contests against one another is the same, the total of goals scored against each other is used. If the total of goals scored between the teams is equal, their original seeding will serve as the tiebreaker. If the totals are tied at any time between two of the three teams, the tie is broken by their head-to-head result.

Goal DifferentialGoal differential is a term used to describe the difference be-tween goals scored against an opponent and the number of goals scored by an opponent against a particular team.

VARSITY TEAM PROFILES

NORTHERN DIVISION

Brown UniversityThe Brown University men’s water polo team looks to improve on last year’s fifth place finish at the CWPA Eastern Championship. With the loss of four starters, which accounted for 35 percent of the Bears’ offense, two-time All-America selection Svetozer Stefanovic and sophomore James McNamara will need to carry the offense this season. Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper Walker Shockley will continue to lead the team between the pipes and help provide the backbone of the defense.

Connecticut CollegeEntering the program’s 11th season as a varsity sport, the Camels of Connecticut College will seek to improve on an eighth place finish in the Northern Division last season. A highlight of the season for the Camels will be the potential of improving on last year’s third place finish at the Division III Eastern Championship in 2011.

Fordham UniversityIt is a season of change for the Fordham University water polo team in 2011. After a pair of top three finishes in the North Divi-sion Championship and two berths at the CWPA Eastern Cham-pionship the last two seasons, the Rams are a team in transition. Fordham graduated nine players from their 2010 squad, including Honorable Mention All-America selections Ali Arat and Ryan Hult-man and former All-Northern Division performers Mikey Edwards and Alex Powell. In their stead is a group looking to make an im-pact in 2011, as they get their first opportunity to make a name for themselves. The Rams do return a pair of starters in senior goalkeeper Christian Flessner and utility man Andrew McKernin. Flessner played all but seven quarters a season ago, posting a school

CWPA

VARSITY TEAM PROFILESrecord 266 saves and earning CWPA Defensive Player of the Week once. McKernin hopes the injury bug that has loomed over him the last two seasons has finally passed, and get back to his fresh-man form when he scored over 20 goals with over a 50% scoring percentage. Other returning players the Rams will need to step up this season are senior J.D. Shrewsbury, juniors Robert Fleming, Jake Bakas, and Daniel Barron, and sophomores Nicholas Allen and Ben Clinkinbeard. With the departure of Arat, Hultman, and Edwards, Shrewsbury is the most experienced two-meter player on the Rams’ roster. He netted three goals to go with a career-high 11 assists, but Fordham will need much more from its senior co-captain. Flem-ing came on with some significant playing time toward the end of last season, and will be expected to log some heavy minutes. With openings on the wing, Bakas should be primed for a breakout sea-son on the outside, following a sophomore campaign that netted eight goals and 20 steals. Clinkinbeard should also fill in one of the wing position after a solid first season in which he tallied 10 goals and 19 assists. Barron and Allen should also be in the mix with Shrewsbury at the two-meter spot. Allen scored nine times as a freshman, while Barron had six goals as a sophomore. Sophomore field players Willie Leach and Dan Kearney, as well as sophomore goalkeeper Eric Mullery should also compete for playing time. The Rams also have four newcomers in senior Josh Itano (transfer who sat out last season), junior Alex Judge (son of CWPA Hall of Famer Chris Judge), freshmen Noah Le Beau (played ODP Coastal Cali-fornia Zone) and Eric Minowitz (2009 Third Team All-America).

Harvard UniversityHarvard University opens the 2011 campaign with expectations of another improved season. The Crimson has increased its win total each of the last two years. The 2010 squad, under the direction of head coach Ted Minnis, won its most games in three years (12). The Crimson graduated three of their offensive leaders, but look to remain strong on the defensive end. The defense is anchored by senior goalie Alexandre Popp, who led the team with 230 saves last year. The offense will rely heavily upon seniors Luka Babic (32 goals, 24 assists), Kevin DiSilvestro (29 goals, 17 assists) and Mike Katzer (26 goals).

Iona CollegeThe Iona College men’s water polo team will have several goals heading into the fall season coming off a season where the rebuilt with a youthful group. For the first time in four seasons, the Gaels failed to qualify for the Eastern Championship. The Gaels look this season to return to the Eastern Championship, and potentially further under 17th year head coach Brian Kelly. The Gaels will look for leadership from a quartet of seniors with big game experience who helped a young squad adjust to the college game a year ago as Matt Joslyn, Cameron Hudson, Hunter Carrier and Ryan Scott will once again lead the team. Along with the scoring Joslyn and Hudson bring, the Gaels expect huge things from their returning starters after the graduation of leading scorer Seth Tasman. Junior Kristian Bocage will look to continue his offensive production of the last two years after scoring 32 points a year ago. Sophomores Lee Stiles, Sean Davis, Bryan Driscoll and Matt Stelnicki will look to make an impact offensively after combining for 45 goals last season, with Stelnicki picking up 17 goals on just 35 shots. Junior Connor

17

Bracken appeared in all 25 games a year ago and will anchor the de-fensive end. Goalie Stefen Hill jumped to the top of the Iona depth chart as a freshman and will continue to grow in his second season in net. Last year, Hill appeared in 23 games, picking up 159 saves and a goals against average of 9.66. The Gaels’ talented group will help this season with the addition of a number of freshmen looking to make an early impact. The Gaels will look for help on the inside from centers Tyler Mancuso and Ian Thompson. On the perimeter, Jake Lloyd and Kyle Elmore are capable scorers.

Massachusetts Institute of TechnologyThe Engineers of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have a strong foundation on which to build in Mark Lawrence’s first year as a collegiate head coach. No stranger to the Collegiate Water Polo Association after leading the Knights of Queens College (N.Y.) to an NCAA Final Four berth in 2002 as a player, Lawrence inherits a program which is coming off a first place finish at the 2010 CWPA Division III Eastern Championship and a seventh place mark at the CWPA Eastern Championship. The loss of All-America selection John Preis to graduation should not hamper MIT’s chances of re-turning to the Eastern Championship and contending for the league title, as Craig Cheney and goalie Columbus Leonard will form the core of the Engineers. The 2010 Northern Division Rookie of the Year and an All-North Second Team selection, Cheney led the team in goals for much of the year to finish with 49 markers, the second-highest total ever by a Tech freshman. Between the pipes, Leonard continues to rewrite the MIT record-book as he shattered MIT’s record for career saves and now stands at 622 stops in just three seasons. A 2010 Second Team All-North pick, he has helped lead the Cardinal and Gray to 32 wins in his career and owns three of the top single-season save marks in program history.

Saint Francis CollegeFor the Terriers of Saint Francis College (N.Y.), the defending CWPA Eastern Champion, the call of history beckons as the team will seek to do something that has not been done by a program from the Northern Division in over a decade - repeat as the league champion. The last Northern Division team to claim back to-back titles was former varsity program, the University of Massachusetts, which captured the 1998-99 crowns. Overall, only three times since the league’s founding in 1972 has a team from the Northern Division’s geographic area repeated as Collegiate Water Polo Asso-ciation (1996-present)/Eastern Water Polo Association (1972-1996) Eastern champion as Yale University (1972-74), Brown University (1983-85) and UMass (1993-96, 1998-99) each accomplished the feat. Now, the Terriers stand on the cusp of joining the Bulldogs, Bears and Minutemen in the select company and claiming the pro-gram’s third Eastern crown in seven years. The Eastern Champions in 2005 and 2010, a key to St. Francis’ title hopes will be replac-ing 2010 All-America recipients Nikola Djuric, Stefan Gencic, Boris Plavsic and Nemanja Simonovic who were all lost to graduation last year. The lone returning All-America pick for the seven-time (2000, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010) Northern Division champion Terriers is Marko Gencic, who will form the core of SFC’s team in 2011 with Tamas Toth, Filip Sasic, Bosko Stankovic, Richard Polgar, Alexander Pantic and goalie Igor Mladenovic. An All-North, All-Eastern Tournament and All-NCAA Tournament recipient last year during a breakout sophomore campaign, Gencic led his squad in goals (55), shots (137), assists (35) and blocks (10). If the adage is true that defense wins championship, then St. Francis’ outlook for the program’s eighth Northern Division crown and another Eastern Championship Tournament berth will rely on Mladenovic who takes over in cage.

SOUTHERN DIVISION, EASTERN REGION

Bucknell UniversityA new coaching staff, veterans in new roles and a talented fresh-man class are examples of how the Bucknell University water polo program is entering a new era. The change began at the top when former longtime Brown assistant coach John McBride was hired as the Bison’s new head coach. Gone are All-America selections Richie Hyden, Howie Kalter and Sean Coghlan. In their place are a number of veterans who will now have to shoulder more of the scoring, de-fensive and leadership roles. Leading returning scorer Brian Barron (50 points) and senior co-captain Beau Caillouette (46 points) should pick up their offensive output, while junior goalie Matt Napleton will become the full-time starter in cage after splitting time last year. Sophomores Jack Else, Alex Nowlin, Trevor Reitz and Mike Kimble combined for 58 goals a year ago and that total should only rise to in 2011. In addition, watch for Spencer Richley, the Bison’s senior co-captain, to increase his career-high 21-goal output from 2010.

George Washington UniversityWith nine letterwinners returning and better than 90 percent of its scoring back from last fall, George Washington University is primed to turn the corner in 2011. Despite finishing 9-20 in 2010, just three years after the best season in school history and a national ranking, head coach Scott Reed said his team is in a good position. With no seniors, the young team is putting together “a very strong foundation for the future,” the coach said. Coach Reed said the team is ready to take its play to the next level - the Eastern Championship and an opportunity to advance to the NCAA championship. “We lost a lot of close games last season because of silly mistakes and we hope to eliminate that,” said Coach Reed, who is entering his 13th season as head coach of the men’s and women’s water polo teams. “If so, we can be above .500.” But the road to the championship will prove difficult

18

19

as the Colonials lost key attacker Luke Carrino for the season due to a broken leg. Coach Reed called the sophomore his best all-around player, citing his overall strong play and good field vision. So once again the Colonials will be looking to their youth to deliver, with the freshmen in particular having to step up their game. Just three months ago, Coach Reed declared the seven incoming players “one of the most talented classes we’ve ever had here at GW.” Reed sin-gles out Turkish player Ridvan Pehlivan, who played on Turkey’s Junior National Team, and Rafi Castillo of Florida, who will miss the season opener to play for Puerto Rico in the FINA Junior World Championship in Greece, but is gaining good experience. For lead-ership, the team can look to starting goalkeeper Cameron Illes, who was named the team’s Most Valuable Player as a sophomore last sea-son. Illes posted the third-highest single-season saves total in GW history with 267 in 2010. More responsibility also will fall on sopho-more utilities Nate Little and Daniel Tyner, the team’s two leading scorers as rookies in 2010. Tyner’s 92 points paced the Colonials and helped him earn Second Team All-South honors from the CWPA last fall, while Little came on late to lead the team with 70 goals. GW will also derive experience from juniors Guy Helman and John Paul Bezerra, both of whom have played in all 60 games since joining the team in 2009, and sophomore Paul Deasey, who paced the Colonials with 36 assists in his inaugural season. Junior goalkeeper Sean Joyce and sophomore utility Adam Streeter will also help supply experi-ence and depth. Along with Pehlivan and Castillo, freshmen Nick Scherma, Lance Leung, Benjamin Krigel, Brian Mojica and Adam Wrobel complete the recruiting class and will be looked upon for production immediately. Mojica totaled 197 goals and Krigel netted 147 during their respective scholastic careers in southern California. Late addition Matthew Williams will also vie for playing time.

Johns Hopkins UniversityThe 2011 Johns Hopkins University Blue Jays look to improve on their 2010 campaign results. This year’s team has some big shoes to fill with the graduation of all time assist leader John Barrett and the program’s most decorated goalie in two-time All-America, All-South and All-Eastern performer Jeremy Selbst. Venezuelan Na-tional Team goalie, Daniel Ovelar, NISCA All-America selection Scott Weigal and Jacob Dorn from the Menlo School will work to fill Selbst’s void. Newcomers Calif.-Hawaiian All-America pick Johnny Beal and NISCA All-America honoree John “Wes” Hopkins should provide the Jays with much needed speed and depth. Former CWPA Southern Division Rookie of the Year and senior Mark Strickland along with two-time All-America selection Alex Whittam will lead and captain this year’s squad. All-America recipient Ross Schofield, along with fellow junior Kielan Crow should help with much needed

experience at both ends of the pool. With only two seniors, the Blue Jays will look for significant minutes from their underclassmen.

Princeton UniversityPrinceton University enters the season poised to make another run at the CWPA Eastern Championship. The Tigers return their top four scorers from last season in Tommy Donahue, Tim Wenzlau, Mike Helou and Chris Cottrell. All four scored at least 30 goals a season ago with Donahue and Cottrell garnering All-South honors. Princeton will also be bolstered by the return of Jeff Cole, a former All-Southern player that is Princeton’s leading active scorer, who took the 2010 season off. These players, along with a full roster of 27 athletes will look to fill the void left by the graduation of a pair of All-Americas in Matt Hale and Mike Merlone. Sophomore Ben Dearborn will see the bulk of the time in goal in replacing Merlone, Princeton’s all-time saves leader.

United States Naval AcademyUnited States Naval Academy head coach Mike Schofield, who is entering his 27th season at Navy, welcomes back five starters and nine letterwinners from last year’s team that posted a 25-7 record and reached the CWPA Eastern title game for the sixth straight sea-son. Leading the charge for the program’s 15th NCAA berth are seniors Kyle Wertz, Stevie Ray and Conor Handley, who combined for 114 goals and 35 assists for 149 points among them a year ago. Wertz and Ray are returning first-team All-East selections. Also contributing offensively will be Archie Warren (28 points last year), Paul Pedrotty (26 points), Taylor Setness (21 points), Darren McKay (21 points) and Scott Corron (20 points), all players that scored at least 20 points a year ago. Defensively, junior Anthony Gutierrez re-turns after blocking 53.8 percent of the shots taken against him, the second most for a starting goalkeeper since the 2002 season, while making 196 saves.

SOUTHERN DIVISION, WESTERN REGION

Gannon UniversityIn 2011, Gannon University plans on building on a 12-10 record from 2010. The Golden Knights will need to replace leading scorer Greg Naranjo who graduated last spring. Daisuke Takagi is Gan-non’s top returning scorer with 34 goals and 21 assists. Senior Phil Myrick returns after scoring 18 goals and adding 11 assists in 2010. Neal Zoellick will be back in goal for the Golden Knight this season. The junior turned away 117 shots last season.

20

Mercyhurst CollegeThe 2011 Mercyhurst College men’s water polo team is coming off one of the best seasons in program history and returns several top players from 2010. How the team handles greater expectations will go a long way towards determining the success of this year’s team. Leading playmaker and Division II All-America pick Brett Luehm-ann is back, having posted 56 goals and 29 assists to lead the 2010 squad in points. Danilo Svorcan also returns after a 41-goal cam-paign and junior William Page recorded 22 goals, 20 assists, and 20 steals. As a freshman in 2009, Page had even more success, as he tallied 37 goals and 39 steals. Other returners include Raul Ariza, who totaled 17 points and 14 steals, Colin McDonald, a 13-goal scorer, and Adam Borgman, who had eight goals and five helpers after tallying 43 points as a freshman. Matt Cote appeared in four games last season and will likely take over as the starting goalie. The team must replace starting goalie Andy Sekulski, along with Kane Ashton and Josh Rodriguez, the third-and-fourth leading scorers a year ago. Sekulski was named the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) Division II Player of the Year, while he and Ashton were named to the All-America Team. The Lakers went 18-10 last season, including wins over Iona College and Harvard Uni-versity at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Cham-pionship, and a season sweep of three matches against crosstown rival Gannon University. Following a fifth place finish at the CWPA Southern Championship and a program high-water mark 18-wins a year ago , head coach Curtis Robinette will seek to lead the Lakers to their fifth consecutive winning season and a berth to the 2011 CWPA Eastern Championship.

Notre Dame CollegeEntering their second year as a varsity program, the Notre Dame College Falcons are poised to make dramatic improvements from their inaugural season. With the return of several key starters, and the addition of a healthy recruiting class, the Falcons are looking to make their mark on the CWPA. Senior captains Justin Carmody and Marton Toth, and senior Drew Sinnott-Neal will anchor the Falcons’ defense, while junior Ahmed Mami will continue to dominate the center position, and senior Dan Peng will help to lead the offensive front. The addition of transfers Vanja Kopilas, Istvan Cseh and Mi-lan Burkus should provide the Falcons flexibility and depth on both offensive and defensive fronts. The Falcons are looking to continue the positive momentum they had in the inaugural campaign.

Pennsylvania State University-Erie, The Behrend CollegeThe Lions of Penn State-Behrend will be looking to turn some heads and cause a few upsets as the season kicks off. The Lions brought in eight freshmen in addition to the five returners. The squad will be lead by Junior Captains Jake DesRoches and Ali Kahn. Kahn, a 2010 All-America Honorable Mention selection, led the Lions last season with 36 goals and looks to continue the competitive culture of the Behrend program. Coming off a fourth place finish at the Division III Eastern Championship, besting rival Washington and Jefferson College, Behrend has set its sights on remaining a top contender in the East. On the defensive side of the tank, Hunter Backenstose will mind the net behind a solid defensive unit for his first season.

Salem International UniversityA new era begins at Salem International University as Rob Bullion enters his first season as a varsity head coach. Bullion takes over with first-hand knowledge of SIU and the CWPA. A 2011 graduate of Gannon University, he played four years for the Golden Knights and will now seek to construct the Tigers into one of the premier programs on the East Coast. “Hard work and dedication are what the focus will be for this team,” said Bullion. “Not just in the pool, but in the classroom as well. This year is very important for us.” Rob is tasked with rebuilding a program that was once at the top of the CWPA, but has fallen on hard times in recent years. “We are trying to build a competitive program, and I think we have a good nucleus.” The Tigers return seven players from last year’s squad. Ca-pain Ryan Wells, Zach Shepard, Cedric Collins, Nigel Van Elteren, Javier Reyes, Myles Swartz and Krzysztof “Kris” Pierzchala will be counted on to give the young players direction. Borislav Kovicev and Wesley Clark highlight the Tigers’ recruiting class.

Washington & Jefferson CollegeThe Washington & Jefferson College men’s water polo team seeks to carry some of the late season momentum built up last year as it heads into 2011. After getting off to a slow start, the Presidents finished the regular season strong with four consecutive wins. Senior Andy Rish and junior Joey Weiland will lead the Presidents’ scoring attack. Rish scored a team-leading 44 goals and added 20 assists, in addition to being the team’s top sprint out man. Weiland had a breakout season as a freshman and will look to return to form after missing nearly all of 2010 due to injury. Weiland had 31 goals and 14 assists as a freshman. A trio of juniors is expected to give W&J added depth on offense. Mike Johnson, who filled in admirably for Weiland last season, developed a fine scoring touch by putting up 19 goals, along with nine assists. Cameron Chaves notched 32 goals and led the team with 43 steals. Alex Shuey looks to build upon a solid sophomore season in which he tallied 12 goals and 16 assists. Soph-omore Daniel Francisco is likely to see the majority of playing time in goal. He appeared in 25 games, including 21 starts, and made 138 saves. While W&J has plenty of familiar faces returning to the team, the roster will also feature a seven-man freshman class. Second-year head coach Greg Jones is excited about the potential that the new-comers bring to the team. The large class features student-athletes from Connecticut, Maryland and Pennsylvania. In all, five different states are represented on the 15-man roster. With a difficult schedule looming, the Presidents will lean on the combination of young tal-ent and veteran leadership to find success in 2011.

Duke UniversityDuke University seeks to revive its winning ways in 2011 after com-ing off a 4-7 campaign in 2010. Three years removed from an At-lantic Division title and trip to CWPA Club Nationals in 2008, the squad enters 2011 ready to face any and all challenges. Second-year captains Brad Lightcap and Vinayak Nikam look to place renewed emphasis on polo fundamentals and redesigned offensive and de-fensive strategies. In that way, fall 2011 offers a unique opportunity for the team to identify its own strengths and weaknesses. With one crucial season of experience in the books, the team hopes to learn from the 2010 season as they prepare for 2011. Key to the Blue Devils’ success will be continued leadership from a core of seniors that includes Michael Fritz, Mike Naclerio, keeper Felipe Mejia and John Ho. Equally significant is consistent contribution from juniors Trent Going and Tim Carlon, and sophomore Hong Poo, as the team looks forward to a telling and exciting 2011 season.

Georgetown UniversityGeorgetown University comes into this season looking to build on its strong performances in the Atlantic Division the past two years. After back-to-back second place finishes in the division champion-ship, the team is hungry to finally get over the hump and make its way to Nationals. It will miss the all-pool play and leadership of graduates Matt Middleton and Tim Eberhardt, but a strong core of young players is rising up to meet the challenge. New captains Dave Ferrara and Luke Crihfield will look to lead the deep squad to anoth-er No. 1 seed in the Atlantic Division Championship tournament.

James Madison UniversityJames Madison University enters the 2011season prepared to work hard and remain a competitive team. Last year the team struggled with the number of players interested in playing and attending tour-naments. This season, the team expects to inspire many new players to step up and play up to some of the more competitive teams’ lev-els. With a majority of young inexperienced players, more pressure will be placed on JMU’s upperclassmen to perform. Senior Chris Ashley will need to step up his offense, while maintaining a solid defense in his final season. Kurt Clauss will be a huge asset to the team with one of the best shots in the league. The team will also look to him defensively. Peter Rossbach and Paul McGrath will play key roles in rounding out the team at both ends of the pool.

Loyola University (Md.)Among a slew of rising programs in the Collegiate Water Polo As-sociation’s National Collegiate Club ranks, Loyola University comes into this season on a positive note. Having shown improvement on both sides of the tank over the past couple of seasons, the club con-tinues to grow in both numbers and talent. In the wake of gaining significant experience last year, the squad seeks a competitive season for a team that brings the qualities of hard work, dedication, a com-petitive nature, excitement and enjoyment of the game to the pool.

CLUB TEAM PROFILES

ATLANTIC DIVISION

North Carolina State UniversityThe North Carolina State University Wolfpack comes into this sea-son with high expectations after coming off a tough no-win spring semester. Senior and two-time All-Conference team member Kam-au Brown, along with fellow teammates Jensen Sales, Kael Schlactus, and Jerry O’Connor do not expect any residual hangover from the spring and look to put the Pack back in the Atlantic Division title game for the first time since 2003. With a dozen promising recruits, NC State expects to be more of a threat in outside shooting and endurance.

University of MarylandThe University of Maryland enters the 2011 season with the pro-gram’s strongest team in years. Returning seniors Joe Beavers and Matt Kolb will strive to be offensive threats for the Terps. In ad-dition, fellow seniors Chris Gibeily, Steve Oursler and Brendan Desaulniers will add depth to the team’s bench and aid in leading the squad to what should be a great season. Returning sophomores Ryan Aceto and Dave Roberts will be expected to provide solid de-fense and lead the team in overall athletic ability. Graduate students Jill Law and Jarrod Bonsmann will further help Maryland’s efforts to become the seventh program in the 12-year history of the Atlantic Division to capture the championship and an automatic berth to the National Collegiate Club Championship.

University of North CarolinaThe defending Atlantic Division champion, the Tarheels of the University of North Carolina are no strangers to the upper-echelon of the division as UNC holds a pair of crowns (2004, 2010) in four title game appearances (2002, 2003, 2004, 2010). In possibly one of the tightest divisions in the Collegiate Water Polo Association, the Tarheels will need to possess the character to become only the second program in division history to repeat as champions joining the 2006 and 2007 Hokies of Virginia Tech.

University of VirginiaThe University of Virginia comes back with a strong core of return-ing players. With good team chemistry and some strong playmakers, the team hopes to continue their Atlantic Division competitiveness and capture the program’s first division crown since 2003. Due to hosting the division championship, Virginia hopes to put on a good show for the home crowd, better its third place finish from last year, and earn a berth to the National Collegiate Club Championship. Although some key players were lost to graduation, watch for Nolan Caine, Jacob Stock and Bob Geis to pick up some the slack on of-fense. On defense, four-years of experience between the pipes will make Tommy Heckleman one of the best goalies in the division. Virginia should be a fast, competitive team that will be ready to play.

Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State UniversityThe lone team in division history to advance to the Atlantic Divi-sion title game four consecutive seasons (2006-09), Virginia Tech comes into the season with the ultimate goal of returning to the National Collegiate Club Championship by bringing the division championship back to Blacksburg, Va. for the fourth time in six years (2006, 2007, 2009). After a tough finish in the division last season, the Hokies will aim to rebound and once again compete for the title. Due to significant turnover in the starting line-up, Virginia Tech turns to senior Scott Wilson and junior Matt Sylvester to lead the team in scoring. Sophomore Alex McDonald and junior Daniel Strait are expected to continue improving, while senior goalie Peter Ollis will continue to anchor the Hokies’ defense to cap off one of the best netminding careers in the history of the division. Thanks to the addition of new players and a reinvigorated drive to return to Nationals, Virginia Tech will be a threat throughout the Atlantic Division title race.

BIG TEN DIVISION

Indiana UniversityThe Indiana University Hoosiers will work to improve on their fifth place finish at the Big Ten Division Championship last year. A key to the Hoosiers’ title hopes will be on the bench as the squad hired IU women’s varsity assistant coach Pat Beemer to guide the program into the future. Relying on captains Bobby Rickert and Mark Ryden to lead the team in the pool, the Hoosiers will also depend on Will Rigali, Kyle Anderson and Luca Pasquesi to power the program to the next level with a trip in November to the National Collegiate Club Championship. Kyle Rickert and goalie Bryce Tobias will aid in the effort as the duo is expected to make a big improvement in their first season on the team.

Michigan State UniversityMichigan State University begins the 2011 season with promise and momentum as the Spartans look to build upon last year’s third place finish at the 2010 Men’s National Collegiate Club Championship hosted by Southern Utah University. With a new season, comes a new beginning as MSU hired Ron Marsh to help lead them to an-other National Collegiate Club Championship. Led by senior cap-tains Andrew Weichmann and Jacob Marsh, holdovers from the 2008 National Championship team, the Spartans will be a force to be reckoned with in 2011. Aiding the Spartans in their goal towards another Big Ten Division and National Collegiate Club Champi-onship title are Michael Scarcelli, Chase Plank and goalie Robert Spiegel. Although the Spartans lost former All-America selection Andrew Olesnavich and captain Nick Talaski, MSU is looking for big contributions from juniors Matt Graziano, Jordan Sikkema and sophomore Sam Marsh.

Purdue UniversityOne of the rising teams in the ultra-competitive Big Ten Division, Purdue University has the potential to be among the contenders by the end of the 2011 season. Although the Boilermakers lost several seniors, Purdue will turn to a new senior class led by Jack Shehan, Danny Lejeune and star goalie Jimmy Palac. At two-meter defense, junior Ross Brinkman and sophomore Tommy Poulos fill the void left by graduates Mike Nickels and Nick Manusos. Furthermore, a new class of players appear promising to continue the improvement of the club.

University of IllinoisThe Fighting Illini of the University of Illinois are younger and hungrier than ever. Coming off a less-than-stellar fourth place fin-ish in the Big Ten Division in 2010, this youthful team is finding out what it has to do to win games. Illinois’ leadership comes from the team’s captain and lone senior, Mike Berkemeyer. As a master strategist and defensive specialist, he looks to utilize the team’s raw talent and speed for success. On offense, the lefty-righty combo of Jim Tucker and Henry Schmidt on the perimeter confuses defenses and goalies alike. Jason Yang and Joe Caffarini tied last year for the team’s scoring crown as freshmen. More will be expected as they mature into great college players. Matt Noonan’s set defense will be the difference on the other side of the pool. Goalie Austin Travers also looks to make a contribution as he adjusts to the college game. Overall, Illinois looks forward to working hard and finally achieving the program’s first Big Ten Championship.

University of IowaThe University of Iowa enters the 2011 campaign with a veteran team and plenty of returning talent. The Hawkeyes will look to Matt Johnson, Rob LeBeau, Sam Cleary and Bob Force to set the tone of-fensively. In addition, rising sophomores Chris Workmen and Geng-his Hallsby aim to make an impact after promising freshman sea-sons. Goalie Max Malec returns to anchor a defense that has been the cornerstone of the Iowa program for the past few seasons. The team will turn to seniors Luke Fevold, Rob McHugh and J.J. Baginski to provide leadership both in and out of the pool. 2011 appears to be a banner year for the Hawkeyes as the team aims to improve their play and finish in the top half of the Big Ten Division.

22

University of MichiganFor the 2011 season, the University of Michigan Wolverines will be looking to replace the scoring provided by last season’s Big Ten Most Valuable Player Nick Mansfield and five other seniors. The Wolverines are also looking to improve upon their runner-up finish in the 2010 Big Ten season. However the Wolverines will not skip a beat with several returning seniors including Matthew Woelfel and Levi Barry who are both four-year members of the team. Michigan is led by senior captains Ben Hubbard, Patrick Trabert and Kenichi Osawa who will aim to leave Ann Arbor with the Big Ten Division Championship plaque in hand. Scoring support will be provided by a vibrant sophomore class that broadcasts promise for the future of the team. University of WisconsinPossessing a balance of youth and experience, the University of Wisconsin Badgers are ready to step-up and take command of the Big Ten Division. Seniors Sean Madden and Charlie Krause provide veteran leadership, while junior Ryan Svoboda anchors the defense in goal. A challenge on defense will be replacing graduated player Kerry Read. Offensively, sophomore Brad Ferris should provide plenty of scoring, but the Badgers will need other players to step up for Wisconsin to knock-off last year’s division title game partici-pants Michigan and Michigan State. Sophomores Connor Murphy and Drew Heidenreich are players who could provide some fire-power to a dangerous Wisconsin attack.

FLORIDA DIVISION

Florida Gulf Coast UniversityBeing the new kids on the block, Florida Gulf Coast University is determined to prove it belongs in the ranks of the Florida Division. Through solid conditioning and fundamental training, the team has built upon its abilities to stay competitive this year. The Eagles hope to accumulate a few notches in the win column by keeping the games close and turning up the intensity late in the contest. Leading the team in the water is senior Abel Echemendia, who comes from Palm Beach, Fla. and has an extensive knowledge of the game from years of experience in the pool. Other noteworthy assets to the team are returners Chris Araujo and Jonathan Jornlid, both veteran play-ers from Miami. Two new additions to the team’s line-up are fresh-men Matt Bunting and Alex Benner. Benner will have the arduous task of goalkeeping for the team, while Bunting will be a vital threat on the perimeter.

Florida International UniversityFollowing a year in which Florida International University finished second in the Florida Division, the Golden Panthers will look to return to the glory of their 2009 season in which the program cap-tured the Florida Division title and placed second at the National Collegiate Club Championship.

Florida State UniversityFlorida State University is ramping up for another strong season. Last year was marked by a fourth place finish in the division. The team is led by three seniors as Dhugal Gardner, a returning player who is Florida State’s High Point award recipient from last year, Jake Gordon, a player who brings a true team effort to the game always looking to help his teammates score, and Bryan Grube, the starting two-meter set. All three will work to lead the Seminoles to the top of the always strong Florida Division. Other returning players of note include Freddie Lee and Bryan Traficante. With a team of veteran

players who have competed together for a fourth straight season, Florida State looks to make a strong bid for the program’s first Florida Division championship title game berth since 2003, division crown and bid to the National Collegiate Club Championship.

University of Central FloridaIt was a tough end to the 2010 season for the University of Central Florida. After winning two games on the first day of the Florida Di-vision Championship tournament in Gainesville, Fla. on the campus of the University of Florida, the Knights dropped both contests on Day Two to place fourth in the division’s final standings. However, Central Florida returns most of its players from a year ago, includ-ing leading scorer/senior Chris Culver, as well as senior James Craig. Senior leadership, paired with some rising young talent and a new home pool, should help the Knights improve on last year’s campaign and compete for the Florida Division title..

University of Florida “A”The University of Florida Gators come into the season looking to win the Florida Division title and capture the program’s third bid to the National Collegiate Club Championship in four years after claiming the 2008 Florida Division Championship and hosting the 2009 event. Last season the Gators finished third in the Florida Di-vision with a loss to former division member Florida International University in the semifinals at home in Gainesville. In the wake of losing several valuable players, the team is working hard to domi-nate the division. Nine players return, with an addition of veteran and graduate school student Cody Smith. Eisa Al Nashmi will coach this rebuilding team, a process that will be made easier due to his international experience and the depth of the Gators’ talent pool. This year’s seniors, which include Eric Ho, Eisa Al Nashmi, Roger Montenegro, James Madison and Kunal Patel, will be counted on to keep Florida competitive and win the division title, enabling another shot at claiming the National Championship.

University of Florida “B”One of two squads in the division from the same institution, the University of Florida’s “B” squad is primed to make it an All-Gator Florida Division title game.

University of Miami (Fla.)The University of Miami has been on the rise the past few years as the club captured the program’s first division title a year ago on the way to a fourth place finish at the 2010 National Collegiate Club Championship at Southern Utah University. An ethnically diverse team with student-athletes from the United States of America, Italy and Argentina, the Hurricanes took the division by storm a year ago to become only the third team in the history of the grouping to capture a Florida Division Championship. Although team members come from all corners of the globe, the athletes come to play not only as teammates but friends with a common goal in mind: earn-ing another Florida Division title and another chance to claim the National Championship. Team captains Juan Lopez and Ian Dixon are the core of the team in the water to lead a squad that is danger-ous on both ends of the tank. Anthony Kanelidis, in his second year as club president, has put all his efforts into making this year one of the best yet and to bring the first National Championship to the State of Florida. Alan Groll, vice president and goalie, has been at his side helping with everything needed to make this year go as smoothly as possible. Jose Mora, in his senior year, has been with the team since the beginning and once again plays a vital role in rallying the defense. Look for the Hurricanes to once again be a

23

contender in the Florida Division with the potential to remain among the nation’s best teams.

GREAT LAKES DIVISION

Grand Valley State UniversityThe Lakers of Grand Valley State University are bolstered by an infusion of youth this year with six freshmen joining the most suc-cessful team in the history of the Great Lakes Division. The 2010 division champion that previously claimed the 2002-to-2008 crowns will look to maintain their grip as the top team in the region. Se-niors Josh Ensing, Josh Gonzales and Jon Tschirhart lead GVSU’s 2011 efforts, while junior Evan Repeck along with sophomores Mike Begrowicz and Doug MacDonald will also be counted on to help return Grand Valley State to the National Club Championship tournament. If freshmen Nate Koella, Cody Duston, Tommy Bar-ton, Adam Pummell, Joey Steffes and Kevin Clancy can contribute immediately for the Lakers, GVSU may be raising its first National Championship plaque since 2005.

Loyola University (Ill.)In just its second season as a member of the Collegiate Water Polo Association, Loyola University will seek to become only the fifth team in the history of the Great Lakes Division title to clasp a title plaque.

Miami University (Ohio)This season brings different challenges and a new division for Miami University, which moves to the Great Lakes Division following a long tenure in the Missouri Valley Division. Five starters return for a squad that will aim to capture the program’s first crown since 2007 (Missouri Valley) in its inaugural year against the other seven Great Lakes’ teams.

Ohio UniversityOhio University comes into the season with a strong recruiting class and several upperclassmen ready to step-up and lead the team. In the wake of losing All-Conference player Peter Zien to graduation, the Bobcats will look to leading goal scorers Aaron Wheatley and John Ubbing to shoulder the load on the offensive end. On defense, senior two-meter defender Tim Jennings and All-Conference goalie Brandon Crawford will lock down opponents. The duo will need to be at the top of their game all season in order for Ohio to have a successful year in the Great Lakes Division. Andrew Delollo and Kyle Ryan will see increased playing time along with Clay Matthew and Aj Montesano as the quartet will need to dominate for Ohio to contend for the championship.

University of DaytonThe University of Dayton Flyers come into this season with sky-high hopes. Dayton returns all but two players lost to graduation from the 2010 club, along with experienced and talented newcomers that are prepared to contribute from the opening sprint of the sea-son. Top scorers Conor Thelen and Jimmy Nickele are expected to step-up their roles as team leaders and focal areas of the offensive attack. The loss of lead scorer and team captain Ben Beachler will be a tough replacement, but newcomers Ian Kinsella and Bennett Fitz bring over 12-years of experience and a combined four state cham-pionships to the Flyers’ program. Seniors Joe Martin and Nicholas Hufford aim to provide their defensive skills to help Dayton capture the program’s first-ever Great Lakes Division Championship.

University of Illinois-ChicagoThe Flames of the University of Illinois-Chicago look to regain the Great Lakes Division title and return to Nationals in 2011. Due to All-Conference two-meter players Andrew Peterson and Mike Walsh not returning for the new campaign, the team will rely on a strong group of freshmen and last year’s bench filling the gaps on offense. Goalie Shane Krivanec will once again serve as the team’s goalie under the mentorship of team alumnus Derrick Brace.

University of Notre DameThe University Notre Dame will fight to improve upon last year’s third place finish in the Great Lakes Division. With a solid returning team and a promising incoming freshman class, the Irish project a strong showing under the direction of new head coach Scott Clines. Captain Dan Geisman and fellow seniors Drew Wroblewski and Rob Ray take over the leadership roles this season to help the club have another great season.

GREAT PLAINS DIVISION

Illinois State UniversityIllinois State University commences the club’s second year in the Great Plains Division fueled by returning players David Kuchta, Mike Byron, Zack Sejna, Pat Kraulis and Mike Keho. The Redbirds seek to qualify for the National Collegiate Club Championship for the second year in a row after snapping a four-year title run by Min-nesota. This accomplishment cannot be completed without players such as, Sam Musser, Ethan Matthews, Ryan Forner, Matt Pfersorf, Mike Blackwood and Billy Fuener. ISU will also rely on newcomers to provide more talent to an already deep team that is built around All-Conference caliber goalie Matt Temple.

Iowa State UniversityComing off a third place finish last year, Iowa State University has a group of young and experienced players anxious to work towards a better result in 2011. Seniors Patrick Finley, Sean Murphy, Kennard Lai, Nick Eddy, Jake Gazlay and Evan Timm will help anchor the Cyclones. Two-meters will be a strength for Iowa State, in addition to depth at the wings and flats. Furthermore, a large crop of exciting and experienced freshmen will strengthen a commanding team that boasts numbers, talent and experience.

Kansas State UniversityKansas State University begins the year in a rebuilding mode. After losing Paul Jarvis, a starting player and team leader for the last five years, as well as a few other upperclassmen, it will be up to some of the strong returning players like Bill Foster and Eric Balas to take control of the team. The two juniors were both consistent goal scorers and all around strong players in 2010. New recruits will add depth to the team and help replace some of the lost players. The potential of Carlos Caro-Delgado not returning to the team in 2011 could leave Kansas State with a big spot to fill on offense.

University of KansasStill a relatively new team, the University of Kansas is concentrating on trying to build up its program around a core of returning players including Brenna Roffers, Jeff Ward, John Dennis, Emily Downard, Johann Duran and Paige Kauffman. Promising newcomers Austin Hess, Kayla Finks, Jeremy Kustoff and Ross Melen should help Kansas be a force to be reckoned with in the Great Plains Division.

24

University of MinnesotaThe University of Minnesota is looking forward to playing some great water polo this year. With multiple new recruits and several veterans returning, including All-Conference players Drew Wojack and David Brajkovic, the Gophers are looking to regain the title of Great Plains Division Champions. Thanks to the underclassmen’s talent and the wisdom of the veterans, the Minnesota team has a bright and competitive future ahead.

University of NebraskaThe Cornhuskers of the University of Nebraska are looking to their returning players to provide leadership coming into this year. Sam Shamburek will be an instrumental part of the Huskers’ offense as a third year starter, while the defense will be centered around fellow senior and two-time All-Conference goalie Jeff Lopez. In addition, sophomores Derek Virgl and Zach Fischer are primed to step-up as Nebraska’s leading goal producers with a year of experience under their belts.

Carleton CollegeAfter graduating seniors Brendan Cassidy and Brian Schuster, the Carleton College Knights are in need of new players to continue the college’s tradition of water polo. Rising sophomores Jesse Goure-vitch and Alex Simonides look to make a big impression following their solid freshman years. The return of senior captain Kevin Hall-man from studying abroad will add leadership and experience to the team. To remain competitive the team will work on strong posses-sion and ball movement skills to develop a solid base for the future.

Grinnell CollegeGrinnell College aims to continue its past success and gain a berth to the Division III National Championship tournament. On the heels of a runner-up finish in the Heartland Conference, the Turkeys lost three seniors to graduation. However, the addition of two time All-America pick Alex Phillips back into the roster and the arrival of several strong freshmen will likely fill the role of the graduates. Grinnell hopes to receive more help from returning field players Will Elsas, Tom Lankiewicz, Nathan Krishnan, Beck Ringdahl-May-land and Sam Sherwood. The Turkeys are also looking to have a strong defensive performance from goalie Manu Spooner.

Several key sophomores and juniors will lead the counter-attack transition, including Kai Cowger, Vin Malwatte, Clark Jacobson and Noah Rosen. The addition of several new players will add speed and depth to the roster in the hopes of a strong finish in the Heartland Division.

Monmouth CollegeAfter back-to-back second place finishes at the Division III National Collegiate Club Championship, Monmouth College returns a strong line-up for its fifth season of competition. The three-time defending Heartland Division champions (2008, 2009, 2010), the Crab People lost only one senior from last year’s team to bring back a roster with the experience and talent to take another shot at capturing the Divi-sion III National Championship. Veteran goalkeeper and co-captain Frank Wasielewski is the last line of defense for Monmouth, while co-captain and two-meter set Tony Marino leads the offense.

La Salle UniversityEntering into its third year in the Collegiate Water Polo Association, the Explorers of La Salle University look to develop a strong foun-dation for the future. The primary goals for the squad are recruiting new players and developing their water polo ability to contend in the coming years. Lehigh UniversityLast season due to facility construction, Lehigh University had to play half the season without ever having passed a ball in practice. Despite this burden, the team came together and was able to salvage the season due to an influx of freshman talent. Goalkeeping is going to be one of the Marauders’ strong points as Mike Fisher returns between the pipes. Josh Harter, Eddie Kirk, Fred Darling, Kevin Koehn and Johnny Kesler are all back to have a successful season with the hopes of making it to the National Collegiate Club Championship.

Pennsylvania State UniversityThe Nittany Lions of Pennsylvania State University return four starters from a team that finished as the 2011 Mid-Atlantic Division runner-up behind the University of Pennsylvania. Due to the tough loss, Penn State is hungry to return to the National Collegiate Club Championship after taking the 2009 division title and placing 10th on the national stage. A story to watch will be PSU’s deep bench. These young players are prepared to make an impact on the division title hunt. Seniors Ketih Meehan, Sean Wagner and goalie Bryan Focht begin their final season in Happy Valley as Penn State has all of the pieces to be a great team.

Saint Joseph’s UniversitySaint Joseph’s University begins the new season with lofty goals. Last year, the Hawks finished fifth in the Mid-Atlantic Division-East Region with a record of 4-4 on the way to an eighth place mark at the division championship tournament. Two key components from the last year’s club do not return, but incoming freshmen should fill the void as the club looks to compete in the division. Key returning

players Dritan Hodo and Craig Finnerty provide leadership in the water and scoring on offense. On defense, Saint Joe’s will re-main stable with two-meter defender Andrew Piazza and perim-eter stopper Brady Werkheiser leading the way. Brett Portelli and incoming freshman Tim Bergey should provide ample perimeter offense in the four and two spots, respectively. The most signifi-cant loss was at goalkeeper, a spot that will be filled by sophomore Michael Thomas, although promising recruits are sure to fight for every opportunity to start. With overall great chemistry, depth and motivation to improve, expect a strong season for the Hawks.

University of DelawareThe University of Delaware’s team has a promising 2011 outlook. Although the squad will miss some of its power players from a year ago, younger athletes eagerly await their chance to show-off their developing skills. Some key returning players include juniors Ben Cooper and Nevin O’Malley, along with senior Josh Humberston, who earned a place on the 2010 All-Mid-Atlantic Division Second Team. All three players have extensive water polo backgrounds and will play large leadership roles in and out of the pool. The Blue Hens’ rapidly developing program is eager to demonstrate their im-provement in the pool against the rest of the Mid-Atlantic Division’s teams.

University of PennsylvaniaThe reigning division champions, the University of Pennsylvania returns to action after claiming the program’s third Mid-Atlantic Division Championship title in the past four years and a 10th place finish at the National Collegiate Club Championship tournament. Returning players Brady Sieber (All-Conference First Team) and Ryan Percy (All-Conference Second Team) continue to bring im-pressive ball-handling skills and agility, allowing the team to excel on all fronts. Likewise, senior Andrew Shapiro, juniors Blake Winston and Dan Fallahi, and sophomores Carlos Alonso and Nick Grover provide additional speed and firepower, while veteran players John Voith, Jon Lustgarten, Ben Ediger and Dan O’Neill chip in endur-ance and experience. In goal, junior Alex Richardson rounds out an ambitious group which, with the addition of several new players provides great depth to the Quakers’ squad as they look to claim the program’s eight division crown. Boasting high ambitions, Coach Antonio Merlo should lead the Quakers into what looks like another promising season.

University of PittsburghThe University of Pittsburgh has a strong outlook as the Panthers return all their starters and lose only two players from their 2010 club. Pitt should be a threat to win the Western Region as Harrison Fisher and Adrian Shodi lead a team that will rely on its outside threats and star lefty Theo Danciu. With an aggressive offense and a solid defense, the team will only become stronger with its incoming freshmen.

Villanova UniversityThe Wildcats of Villanova University will feature the youngest squad they have had in years with only two seniors (Dan Weeks and Ian McDonough) on a roster of 18. Keys to the offense will be the solid play of several drivers as captain McDonough, Matt Brawley, Jamie Padula and Andrew Hotchkiss lead the way. Two-meter play will be handled by Dan Quigley, a sophomore from the Bay Area, who showed great promise after only one season. Other offensive weapons on the team include lefties Ben Mix and Joe Schaadt, two players that should provide some outside scoring

27

and help balance the Wildcats’ man-advantage. Tending the cage is Ryan French, a sophomore from San Diego. While their bench is a little light on experience, several players have made great im-provements and should see playing time including Weeks and sophomore Justin Knoebel. How far the squad goes will largely rest on how quickly the younger players can make an impact.

MISSOURI VALLEY DIVISION

Lindenwood University “A”This marks Lindenwood University’s ninth season in the Collegiate Water Polo Association as the Lions will be shooting for another mark after winning the program’s fifth Missouri Valley title in the past six years. Last year, the Lions placed sixth at the National Club Championship. This year, ambitions are even higher as most of the team returns for another title challenge. Lindenwood will heavily rely on captain Marco Tscheschlok, Sharn Appel and last season’s Most Valuable Player Toni Storic to lead the team. As most of the squad has been competing together for three years, the experience of the returning members will provide a solid base for this year. Incoming freshman goalkeeper Milutinovic Gojko, drivers Brett Lundstrom and Mohamed Samith are expected to strengthen the squad and contribute to the team’s title goals.

Lindenwood University “B”After finishing fourth in the Missouri Valley Division last season, the Lindenwood University “B” team will continue to aspire for a berth in the division title game. Goalkeeper Dino Galic, Michell Condon, captain Michael Rimkus, Dustin Boogaart, Jackob Auinbach, Daniel Goggin, Clayton Brown and Jeremy Hentschke join with incoming freshmen Benjamin Kimbrough, Joshua Briles, Brian Kaestner and Anthony Lopez to form the core of the squad.

Lindenwood University “C”The first program in league history to field three teams during a com-petitive season, Lindenwood University anticipates the institution’s “C” team to serve as a training ground for the Lions’ new talent.

Saint Louis UniversityAfter playing in the Missouri Valley Division conference title game the past two seasons, Saint Louis University returns this year hun-gry to claim the program’s first division title. Boasting a balance of speed, skill and power, the Billikens’ success will depend on the club’s ability to mold their many talented parts into a cohesive unit.

Washington University in St. Louis (Mo.)Washington University in St. Louis comes into the season with guns-blazing. With four starters returning and three goalies capable of shutting down any sharpshooter, the Bears are eyeing the 2011 Division III Collegiate Club Championship at Hamilton College in New York. First Team All-Conference pick Adam Gremp will lead the offense from his position at two-meters with the help of cap-tains Sandor Kovacs and Tim Greer. In addition, Second Team All-Conference choice Sterling Jawitz and Jim Parks will not hesitate to counter-attack against opponents. With a promising freshmen class - including All-America selection Shay Banton, two-meter guard Ve-dad Karahodzic and goalie Andrew Ng - coach Dan Conner sees both new and returning talent as strengths of his squad. This year, Washington wants not only a conference title, but also a Division III National Championship.

Western Illinois UniversityWestern Illinois University will strive to improve on its recent place-ments in the Missouri Valley Division with hopes of returning to the division title game for the first time since capturing the 2004 championship.

NEW ENGLAND DIVISION

Boston CollegeAfter a hiatus from the New England Division, Boston College re-emerged in the Spring of 2011 during an invitational at Williams College. The Eagles’ massive roster looks forward to using its ‘strength in numbers’ quality in the coming season with constant experience and fresh legs coming off of the bench. BC will rely on its strong senior class to lead the rest of the team by example in the coming months. Holding a collective goal of winning the New Eng-land Championship and earning a bid to play at Nationals, the team is prepared to claim a division crown for the first time since taking the 2006 North Atlantic Division title.

Boston UniversityBoston University is looking to capitalize on a core group of strong returning players. After a third place finish in last year’s division championship, the Terriers plan on fielding a stronger defense and a reorganized offense to reach a title game for the first-time in pro-gram history. Team leaders David Saxon, Andrew Matsas and Jer-emy Butz, will rely on returning goalie Jonathon Freedman as he formz the backbone of the defensive effort. Kyle Schluns, Austin Brashears and Kevin Shiuan will also contribute on the offensive end of the pool.

Dartmouth CollegeDespite three consecutive New England Division title game appear-ances, with a victory in 2008 and losses to Yale University in 2009 and 2010, the Dartmouth College Big Green know that a fourth-straight trip to the championship tilt is not guaranteed. A five-time division champion, with victories in 1998, 1999, 2001 and 2008, Dartmouth will still strive to become only the second program in division history to reach the title game four-times in as many years.

Middlebury CollegeMiddlebury College starts the season primed to build on last year’s fourth place finish in the New England Division. The Panthers re-turn the bulk of their core offensive and defensive players. However, the greatest loss will be the graduation of Jeffrey Wong and Ricky Chen, both defensive leaders last season, who plan to continue their water polo careers as candidates for the Hong Kong International team. Thanks to returning players Nick Daly, Andre Keiser, Jeremy Janson, Peter DiCenzo and Ben Weinberg, Middlebury remains a strong contender for the institution’s first division title since 2007.

Wesleyan UniversityFollowing a fifth place finish in the New England Division in 2010, Wesleyan University returns four-of-six starters in the field. First Team All-Conference and Honorable Mention All-America selec-tion Wesley Fantini, who was named one of two captains at the end of the season, returns for another try at capturing the division championship. Co-captain Momo Saleh is a perennial stalwart on defense and will be asked to add to the team’s offense as a driv-er in 2011. Brendan Fortin and Russell Madison look to control the Cardinals’ offense with their powerful outside shots and crafty play. Max Ginsberg returns at set and will count on his size and leg

28

strength to bring scoring to the Cardinals’ offense after a 20+ goal output last season. In addition to the starters, Wesleyan brings back five other veterans, including netminder Thomas Cho and utility player Nick Drohan. A seasoned veteran from Palo Alto, Calif., Cho also offers previous field experience. Justin Yoshimaru and Mark Ramos will be counted to keep the Cardinals competitive with their tenacious and aggressive play. The Cardinals have ten new players of varying ability this season. Freshmen Stefan Brown and Erin Cohn, come to the Cardinals with high school experience and will look to make an immediate impact. The real test for the Cardinals rests in their ability to create better team chemistry as the club possesses the raw talent needed to field a successful club.

Yale UniversityThe two-time defending New England Division champion, Yale University is spearheaded by the leadership of its four seniors. The Bulldogs return the bulk of their starters and will rely on the club’s diversity of abilities and playing styles for tenacity on defense and offensive flair. Fielding a balanced roster combined with experienced coaching, look for Yale to again challenge for a berth to the National Collegiate Club Championship this fall.

NEW YORK DIVISION

Binghamton UniversityBinghamton University hopes to build upon the 5-3 regular season record it compiled in 2010. What was once a program fighting for eighth place is now a legitimate contender defeating teams like New York University (NYU) and Syracuse University. After a close quar-terfinal game with NYU, the squad missed the chance to place in the top four for the first time in program history by a single goal. This season, the Bearcats will see their top player James Stavdal return in an attempt to lead the team to its best finish in program history. Key players, including seniors Rustle Drake, Jerry Deboever and Vladi-mir Gudovich, also return to place the Binghamton in contention for a top four placement at the end of the season. Courtesy of the addition of young talent like sophomore captain Seth Wolin, the Bearcats are looking to establish themselves as a long-term New York Division powerhouse.

Colgate UniversityA significantly enlarged program, Colgate University’s title hopes will depend on the incoming freshmen. A man to watch is Elton Steinberg who spent the summer playing in a Scottish league. Stein-berg brought several new plays back from the Highlands that will make the team more cohesive in the water as he coaches the club. Captains Chip Molten and Mike Chamberlain are excited to get in the pool with some new talent and techniques to shock the New York Division.

Columbia UniversityFollowing back-to-back first round near upsets of eventual national runner-ups Florida International University and the University of Texas at the National Collegiate Club Championship, Columbia University is eager to return to the pool for another opportunity in 2011. The three-time defending New York Division champions are back with returning players Austen Oliver, Kai Golden and Abiel Garcia to lead the offense. Brice Particelli, Silas Wilkinson and Keith Heyde will be counted on for important roles in the Lions’ defense. Be sure to watch for new arrivals to the Columbia family such as Ca-leb Greig, Reid Fitzgerald and Vahe Markosian, who will be essential for the Columbia’s success.

Cornell UniversityCornell University aspires to build from a productive 2010 season in which it finished 7-1 in league play and 12-3 overall. Notable wins included victories over Mid-Atlantic Division champion the University of Pennsylvania and New England Division runner-up Dartmouth College in the Ivy League tournament,as well as a pair of victories against Army. Co-captains Doug Greer and Tyler Mar-rero anchor the driver positions where they scored 32 and 33 goals, respectively. Lefty wing Dylan Spitz and senior Eric Yu control the outside. Offensively, swimming sensation Evan Ciecimirski and Ma-rio Martone provide a dangerous attack from set. On defense, Sean Lyons will bring the pain to opposing two-meter sets. In goal, Alex Schlichting will once again defend the pipes for his third season. Also look for Jack Robbins, Andrew Broenen and Daniil Shalmiyev to contribute off the bench.

Hamilton CollegeLooking forward to the 2011 New York Division campaign, the young Hamilton College program will build off its success from the 2010 season as the Continentals finished fifth at the Division III Na-tional Collegiate Club tournament. Led by seniors James Crafa, Tom Cyran and Ryan Park, and juniors Dan Levine, Taylor Hogenkamp and Tom Youngblood, along with sophomore Graham Boyd, the program hopes to continue moving in a positive direction and make a statement both in the division as well as the Division III National Championship, which the Continentals will host in November. New York UniversityThis will be a rebuilding year for New York University following two division title game appearances in the past six years (2007, 2005) and one championship (2007).

Rensselaer Polytechnic InstituteRensselaer Polytechnic Institute seeks to enjoy the sport of water polo in a competitive learning environment. Hoping to expand the sport’s prominence in the region and promote water polo awareness, the club strives to reach a competitive level at tournaments. The team will focus heavily on recruiting incoming freshmen who have played at the high school varsity level, as well as those who are new to the sport throughout much of the season.

Syracuse UniversitySyracuse University looks to achieve bigger and better things this year. Fielding a team built of mostly freshmen and sophomores, the Orange works to rebuild their program and grow stronger every year. After a disappointing season by Syracuse’s standards, the team hopes to bounce back as new team captains Tucker Hart and Julian Capriles plan to lead the squad to a title run. With only one graduat-ing player, the team will have many returning players ready to prove themselves worthy as New York’s best.

United States Military AcademyA four-time New York Division champion (1998, 1999, 2001, 2002), the United States Military Academy will use its returning players and an addition of new hopefuls to place first in the New York Divi-sion. Army exhibits a strong team connection and sense of cama-raderie. Senior Zach Zhang will remain an integral defensive player as he continues to play two-meter defense. Chris Corbett, a new addition to the team, is a promising two-meter set and will greatly add to Army’s offense. Steve Rowland will take over as the starting goalie for the season, hoping to provide a solid defense for the Black Knights.

NORTH ATLANTIC DIVISION

Amherst CollegeDespite the loss of All-America selections Alex Fraser and Reid Fitzgerald, Amherst College remains a strong contender in the North Atlantic Division. The addition of freshman Conor Deveney and newly-eligible faculty member Chris van den Berg provides the offensive skills needed to complement a stingy defense. Last year’s second-leading goal scorer Conor McAuliffe looks to take the lead on this season’s team, while Dan Berghoff returns to the net as one of the best goalies in the conference. Captains Ben McBratney, Tim White and Ethan Balgley will see substantial playing time in their final season as well.

Bates CollegeWhile far smaller in numbers and size than the rest of the clubs in the North Atlantic Division, Bates College does not lack talent. Lead by top scorers Jimmy Miller, Mike Hanley and Dan Aupi, the team has enough offensive firepower to overwhelm opponents. Will Strathmann has emerged as one of the premier goalies in the divi-sion and anchors a much-improved Bates’ defense. Every member of the team is an essential component and plays a huge role in why this club is recognized as a formidable opponent.

Bowdoin CollegeLed by co-captains Spencer Vespole and Noah Perwin, who instill in their team the values of a “hardbody approach” to the game, the Polar Bears of Bowdoin College are bolstered by returning start-ers Alex Edison, Basyl Stuyvesant, Nathan Mecray and EJ Googins. Mac Routh and Talhia Nunez bring much-needed experience off the bench, while incoming freshmen Patty Boyer, Joe Celestin and Danny Byrnes figure to crack the rotation as well. The team hopes to be the best program in Maine and contend for the North Atlantic Division title.

Colby CollegeDespite the loss of its practice facility, Colby College will aim to contend for the top spot in the North Atlantic Division. Led by seniors Tom Hurley, Mason Roberts, Sandy Johnson, Raymond Reiling, Ryan Trafton, Brian Gilligan, Jack Mauel and Ryan Fischer, along with legendary Professor Kerril O’Neill, the Mules will try to leverage their years of experience and tough training techniques to overcome all challenges. Andrew Hedberg, the only junior ac-tive for this fall season, will again return as a brick wall in goal.

29

In addition, the team will ask returning sophomore talent Colin McLaughlin, Andy Petersonm, Jonathon Brink-Roby, John Maderia, and Shannon Kooser for offensive production.

Saint Michael’s CollegeThe newest member of the North Atlantic Division, Saint Michael’s College plans to compete with heart and build for the future.

Tufts UniversityThe Tufts University Jumbos charge into another season hoping to maintain their high performance of the past two seasons. In 2009, the Jumbos won the North Atlantic Division title and their first Di-vision III National Collegiate Club title in Jumbos’ history. Last sea-son, Tufts again claimed the North Atlantic champion before plac-ing fourth at Division III Nationals. Captains Benji Koltai and Alex Strittmatter lead a strong group of returning players, including Jeff Fine, Travis Grodkiewicz, Austin Wood, Inbar Fried, Chris Lang-bort, Alex Henry and Steve Lessard. In addition, the Jumbos gained a handful of new talent to complement the returning players who greatly improved their skills.

United States Coast Guard AcademyThe Coast Guard Academy is excited to be back in action with the start of the 2011 season. The Bears have many seasoned players returning as starters, including new team captains Kent Hunt and Geoy Thomas. Seniors Johnson Knox and Brian McGuiness will play key roles, respectively, providing speed and a strong left-hand shot. Juniors Parker Bratman, Harrison Carter and Chris Clifton provide solid experience as skilled utility players. A crew of sopho-mores - Barrett Johannsen, Marc McAndrew, Ryan Montvydas, Isaak Olson, Charlie Totten and Marco Tinari - will be significant contributors. Several freshmen with experience, including Andrew Ellis, Drew Ferraro, Julio Rocha and Adam Hoburg, will aid the Bears’ long roster of dedicated and capable players.

University of MassachusettsThe University of Massachusetts water polo club is excited to begin its fifth year in the Collegiate Water Polo Association as a club pro-gram. Eager to field a strong squad, the Minutemen will look to the leadership and experience of their returning players to help the club achieve a division title.

Williams CollegeWilliams College will aim to rebuild in a new league format as the program moves over from the New England Division. Led by tal-ented tri-captains Ben Wampler, Greg McElroy and John Guiffre, the Ephs’ have the firepower to make an immediate impact and will rely on their underclassmen for depth. On the heels of a frustrating

season, the team will have build off the exceptional two-meter of-fensive and defensive efforts of Ben Wampler. Anchored by Greg McElroy between the iron pipes, the Ephs’ defense will again be strong. Speed is one of the greatest assets of Williams’ 2011 squad as John Guiffre, Liam Gallagher, and Sean Sutherland will look to press the advantage on offense.

NORTHWEST DIVISION

Oregon State UniversityAfter a disappointing loss to the University of Oregon in the North-west Division title game, Oregon State University seeks to sweep the league and carry its momentum into the National Collegiate Club Championship tournament. Led by goalie Brad Alvarez, the next two years should be something special in the division.

Portland State UniversityAmong a crop of first-year programs joining the Collegiate Water Polo Association in 2011, Portland State University is excited to be in the league with seven returning players and many new faces.

University of OregonA five-time division champion in seven title game appearances, the University of Oregon Ducks were disappointed with last year’s final result, despite their record of 18-1. Behind veterans Conor Broom and Aaron Bishow, and young star Harrison Tingler, the upcom-ing season looks promising for a Ducks team ready to hit the pool. Playing in-your-face defense with a high-powered offense led by the two-meter duo Bishow and Tingler and quick hitters Matt Stang and Zachary Yense, Oregon is out to prove something with a de-termined mindset to exceed expectations and finally make the top five at Nationals. Oregon is certainly capable with at least 16 players possessing varsity caliber talent. This year the Ducks cannot wait to fly south to the National Collegiate Club Championship and show their feathers.

University of Washington (Wash.)The University of Washington Huskies are rebounding from a crush-ing loss to Oregon State University at the 2010 division tournament. Although the team was filled with All-Conference seniors, such as Tom Stowell and Mike Moshofsky, a wealth of underclassmen will fuel this year’s run at Nationals. With the likes of freshmen Quinn Sterling and Conner Stinson, the Huskies will have quick and ener-getic drivers to match-up with the Northwest’s best offenses. Also new to Huskies is junior guard Cameron Simmons. After graduat-ing from the University of Arizona, he was accepted into graduate school at UW and hopes to add size, speed and a powerful shot to Washington’s title hopes. Several core starters are returning this year to inject the team with inspiration and experience. Goalie Chris Lim will be seasoned in the game play of the Northwest after moving from Singapore for college. Junior Joe Laird will make his mark as a serious goal threat and lock-down defender. Returning as captain is senior Sam Sussman who will be leading the squad and playing two-meter set. A 2009 and 2010 All-America selection, Sussman will work to put all the Huskies’ parts together to dominate the division and contend at the National Collegiate Club Championship.

Western Washington UniversityWestern Washington University plans to have one of its best seasons to date. The team is abundant with seniors and experience although the WWU team is small in numbers. To bolster the roster, the club

30

31

will need to attract more freshmen as depth may be an issue. Return-ing seniors Kevin Reese and Nick Maxwell are expected to impact both ends of the pool with their dedication to conditioning and ability to play every minute of the game. Mike Hoff should build on the success of his freshman year as Western Washington hopes to compete at the highest level against the teams in the Northwest Division.

PACIFIC COAST DIVISION

California Polytechnic State UniversityCalifornia Polytechnic State University looks to improve on its finish from last year as the five-time National Champions have the depth and skilled players to claim another title. The addition of Coach Matthew Andrews, a two-time champion with Cal Poly in 2001 and 2002, takes the Mustangs back to their roots in order to reclaim what has been missing from San Luis Obispo since 2007 - the National Collegiate Club Championship. Cal Poly is looking forward to big things from two-meters as Trevor Heglund takes center stage and Jake Muir returns to the roster. Anchored by seniors Connor McGill, Dustin Lee, Greg Welch, Josh Combs, John Sims, Zachary Curhan and Casey Nakamura, Cal Poly is determined to earn another trip to Nationals and return home with the title.

San Diego State UniversitySan Diego State University will work to rise up in the Pacific Coast Division’s regional standings and advance to the overall division championship for the first time in program history.

University of California-IrvineSophomore Mitch Wise leads the list of returning players for a University of California-Irvine squad that seventh-year head coach Marc Hunt says is fairly untested after losing five All-America picks from last year’s roster. Wise scored 30 goals a year ago for the Ant-eaters who finished 18-8 overall and earned a No. 5-ranking in the final poll of the season. Seniors Trent Baxter and Max Parrague scored 15 and 10 goals, respectively, while junior Nick Pfeil added eight goals and Winston Newland, also a junior this year, scored five. Six of UCI’s top seven scorers in 2010 were seniors, led by Brandon Johnson (48 goals), Griffin Lerman (46) and Doug Lindsey (40) to leave a scoring gap which the underclassmen will need to field.

University of California-Los AngelesThe 2009 and 2010 National Champion Bruins return five starters as the University of California-Los Angeles has a chance to make history in becoming the first men’s program to capture back-to-back-to-back national titles. This year’s squad will be led by senior captains Cameron Virjee and First-Team All-America netminder Mike Scott. On offense, the Bruins will once again be led by 2010 National Player of the Year Max Scott. The Bruins, seeking to re-plenish the void left by Pacific Coast Division Player of the Year, and current Columbia University graduate student, Caleb Greig will look to junior captain Bill Farmer to lead the charge from the younger ranks.

University of California-San DiegoAnother of the improving Pacific Coast Division squads with the potential to make a mark in the coming season, the University of California-San Diego will rely on strong defense and timely scoring to keep their division competition in check.

University of California-Santa BarbaraThe University of California-Santa Barbara will depend on the trio of two-meter set Paul Nagle, driver Kyle Hersh and goalie Duran Reid to lead the program to new heights in 2011.

University of San DiegoIn just four years after joining the organization, the University of San Diego has made great strides in league play as the club expects to continue to improve and move up in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Pacific Coast Division standings.

University of Southern CaliforniaThe University of Southern California water polo team prides it-self on being a brotherhood of excellence that is ready to contend for the National Collegiate Club Championship. Among the largest squads in the nation over the past few seasons, the Trojans hope to use their speed and skill to prove they are the best in the Pacific Coast Division.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN DIVISION

Arizona State University “A”In only their sixth season as a team with the ultimate goal of winning a National Collegiate Club title, the Sun Devils of Arizona State Uni-versity have their eyes set on taking back the division. The defend-ing Southwest Division champion, ASU will seek to down its new opponents from the Rocky Mountain Division along with its fellow members of the merged Southwest Division for another trip to the National Collegiate Club Championship. Leading the Sun Devils for his final season is utility player Wesley Sjoholm. As the last remaining founding member, he has the team focused on seeing the club come full circle by earning the first national championship in the sport by a team from the State of Arizona. Acting as the defensive anchor in the cage is graduate student Todd Clapper. Supported by 2010 Southwest Division Most Valuable Player Cory Peterson at center back, and utility players Simon Hood and Chris Roman, Clapper has the potential to take over a game from between the pipes or in the field. On offense, center forward Ryan Bethell will take a posi-tion in front of the cage with support from Kevin Dunn. Drivers Travis Dunn, Jordan Lunetta, Nick Ryan and Alan Nguyen return to contribute speed and precision to ASU’s scoring attack. Former player Travis Addante rejoins the group after taking a year off, while freshman Orion Swanson will suit up for the Sun Devils to provide youth and depth to a core group of grizzled veterans.

Arizona State University “B”Arizona State University will once again field a “B” team as the Sun Devils will strive to place both teams in the division title game.

Colorado State UniversityFielding a smaller team than in past years, the Rams of Colorado State University are looking to build depth. Two keys for CSU are strong returning players and a new coaching staff under Matt Wat-son. New players joining the team are looking to be major players in the Rams’ performance as the team has high hopes.

University of Arizona “A”The University of Arizona comes into this season with a different perspective as the team’s original coach quit two weeks before the season started, creating a stir for the team. The squad elected to vote one of their own, Carl Hertlin, as this year’s coach in order to lead the

club to victory. Seniors Tyler Steeb, Jamie Clark and Andrew Wolff will lead the “A” team, while Matthew Goodenough, Justin Frieden-thal, Dylan Davidson, Steven Rodriquez, Bill Ruth, Justin Egkan, Matthew George, Coleman Pickell and Ryan Hodge aim to help the Wildcats’ claim the Rocky Mountain Division Championship.

University of Arizona “B”The University of Arizona “B” team will work to finish in the top-half of the expanded Rocky Mountain Division.

University of Colorado “A”The Buffaloes of the University of Colorado are set to claim the fifth title in program history as Colorado previously won pairs of Rocky Mountain Division (2008, 2010) and Southwest Division (1998, 2001) crowns. This year, the club’s 40+ members’ goal in-cludes winning the Rocky Mountain title, achieving a Top 10 nation-al ranking, and fueling the passion and development of water polo at Colorado. The defending Rocky Mountain Division champion who placed eighth at the 2010 National Collegiate Club Championship, Colorado will once again aim to finish among the Top 10 teams in the nation.

University of Colorado “B”The University of Colorado “B” team will attempt to move up in the division standings after another strong finish a year ago.

University of DenverIn the wake of a third place finish in the Rocky Mountain Division last season, the University of Denver will experience changes this year as the program is entirely male after being co-ed in 2010. The team achieved its goal of improving on its standing the previous season as the Pioneers placed fourth 2009, a pattern which Denver would like to repeat in 2011.

University of New MexicoThe University of New Mexico is ready for anything this season. Last year proved to be successful for the Lobos and with nearly every Lobo returning and a large freshman class, the Lobos look to dominate in the Rocky Mountain Division. Returning players Mikhail Grigoriev, Adam Gutierrez, Aaron Gunning, Brandon Huff-man, Ryan Thomas, Ben Wild, Robert Trujillo, Ruben Kimmelman, Matt Simmons and Jarryd St. John are expecting to light it up from the perimeter, while Bryant Shuey and Billy Simmons are hungry for backhands and sweeps from two-meters. Goalies Jarryd St. John and Jeff Solan are eager to boost their blocking stats this year after a solid 2010 campaign, while freshman Ryan Grady is ready to prove to the Collegiate Water Polo Association membership that a fresh-man goalie can hang in the big leagues. Look to the Lobos’ fresh-man class to have strong performance, notably Noah Allaire, Mark Wagner, Alex Kapp, Brady Rigg, Igor Goulart, Colton Grossheim and Alex Vasquez, as no goalie is safe with these guys in the water. Also look out for Seth Williams, Ryan Wheaton, Kiko Mendez, Eric Garcia and Lewis Chiang as New Mexico is ready to rock the Rocky Mountain Division.

University of UtahThe University of Utah starts the season with several returning starters as Brent Weldon, Christian Hayes, Tyler Pool, Vig Miku-lis and Danny Bradley come back for another shot at the Rocky Mountain Division. Last year, the Utes finished second in the divi-sion to the University of Colorado. Losing just three of the top performers from last season to graduation, Utah has the potential

for improvement due to a bevy of new talent joining the program. The greatest void occurs on defense with the graduation of goalie Sam Thomas and stout defensive two-meter guard, Todd Bradley. Freshman McKay Jensen and senior Avi Jurovitzki will be compet-ing on the defensive end of the pool, while hope remains that Sam Thomas will return from an injury towards the end of the season.

University of WyomingThe University of Wyoming begins competition in the Collegiate Water Polo Association with a goal of competing against the Rocky Mountain Division’s best teams and building a program that will last well into the future.

Westminster ColllegeA first year program, Westminster College is excited to join the league. This marks the first men’s water polo team in the history of the institution as the student-athletes are psyched to be a part of this pioneering experience for their school. Boasting an indoor swim-ming pool, even the weather can not stop this team from practicing the extremity of water polo. Look for their drive and motivation to help them be competitive in their inaugural season.

SIERRA PACIFIC DIVISION

California State University-ChicoAfter an uncharacteristic seventh place finish in the Pacific Coast Division Tournament, California State University-Chico returns to the pool with a solid group of returning players and an exciting array of new talent in the freshly minted Sierra Pacific Division. Seniors Brian Brearley, Peter Jacobs, Justin Short, Nick Ballew and Taylor Kudell lead the way in an attempt to match last year’s regular season record of 8-0, and better it with a trip to Nationals. The never quit attitude, combined with the solid group of family, friends and fans that Chico State is famous for in the Golden State, will make the 2011 squad unmistakable both in and out of the pool.

California State University-FresnoThe California State University-Fresno Bulldogs will face fewer chal-lenges this season as half of the Pacific Coast Division split off to form the Sierra Pacific Division. With a new landscape to overcome, Fresno State hopes to gain experience to begin climbing the ladder to the top.

California State University-Maritime AcademyCalifornia State University-Maritime Academy will once again take to the water as part of the Collegiate Water Polo Association for a shot at glory.

Saint Mary’s College (Calif.)The Gaels of Saint Mary’s College will strive to establish a program best mark in their new grouping and top a fourth place mark in the overall 2003 Pacific Coast Division standings.

San Jose State UniversitySan Jose State University will depend upon the strengths of its un-derclassmen to begin the process of climbing the standings for an eventual shot at the Sierra Pacific Division title.

Stanford UniversityEntering the program’s fifth season as a part of the collegiate club

ranks, the Cardinal of Stanford University are a young and upcoming club. Consisting of both undergraduate and graduate level students, the team grants those who cannot compete on the varsity squad an opportunity to play organized, competitive water polo against other schools. In addition, it promotes good health and physical fitness and fosters team camaraderie and school spirit. The Cardinal will aim to improve on last season’s placement and finish in the top three within the Sierra Pacific Division.

University of California-BerkeleyThe University of California-Berkeley comes back this year looking strong. After losing few players from the 2010 team, the Golden Bears hope to rely on their experience to earn the program’s first au-tomatic berth to the National Collegiate Club Championship tour-nament. Disappointed with their semifinal loss at the Pacific Coast Division region championship a year ago, Cal will work to erase the memory thanks to some new players combining with the solid back-bone of last year’s squad to solidify one of the best programs in the nation. Captains and All-Conference players Spencer White and Noah Orloff will provide leadership and direction for the Golden Bears in their quest for the division championship.

University of California-DavisThe University of California-Davis returns a roster full of talent and experience that will work to put the Aggies into the stratosphere of the Pacific Coast Division’s best teams. Last year, the team finished third in the Northern Region and notched an eighth place mark at the overall division championship tournament, both achievements the Aggies will look to dramatically improve upon in 2010 after reaching the title game in 2006 and 2007.

University of California-Santa CruzThe 2010 Division III National Collegiate Club champion, the Uni-versity of California-Santa Cruz will face the challenge of one of the most difficult schedules in the whole of the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) as a member of the Sierra Pacific Divi-sion. In addition, the Banana Slugs have the potential to join Lin-denwood University and Wesleyan University as the third program in the history of the Division III Championship to claim back-to-back titles if UC-Santa Cruz elects to compete in the 2011 event at Hamilton College.

SOUTHEAST DIVISION

Auburn UniversityFollowing a few years of rebuilding, Auburn University is looking forward to the upcoming season with almost entirely the same core of players from last year. Two long time starters, Joey Kirkpatrick and Patrick Gilday, are entering their final season and hope to leave on a high note after a couple of disappointing seasons the past two years. The team has added a few experienced freshmen that will be a great addition in the water. Probably the most exciting addition to the program is coach Jim Ferguson, a member of the International Water Polo Hall of Fame and an Olympic bronze-medalist.

Clemson UniversityIn just one season, the Clemson University Tigers have gone from a young team to a veteran squad that lost none of their starters from a year ago. Two-meter set Miles Ware and two-meter defender An-drew Stanton begin their senior seasons ready to take the next step - winning the Southeast Division title and competing in the National Collegiate Club Championship. Clemson will be anchored by expe-rienced netminder Michael Reitz as the Tigers ability to play defense will decide their fate. Emory UniversityIn its second year back in the league, Emory University seeks to improve on last year’s fourth place finish in the division. The Eagles return most of last year’s roster, including captain Stephen Leech along with starters Jordan Brustein and Brian Massey. Graduate students Paul Musille, Joe Kramer and Andy Ratto will also suit-up again for the Eagles. However, Emory should also feature a gallery of new faces that will add needed depth and variety to the attack. The Eagles will rely on goalie Allon Mordel to anchor an opportu-nistic defense, while hoping that aggressive contributions from their variety of powerful offensive players can carry the program to a Southeast Division championship.

Georgia Institute of TechnologyFollowing a second place finish in the Southeast Division last sea-son, the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech return every starter but one, leading scorer Chris Bauerlein. Looking to fill this void are seniors Steven Winton and Steve Larson with their strong arms and several juniors including Freddy Damen and Patrick Slane. Neal Laxpati and Michael O’Rourke plan to share time in cage as the duo have con-tinuously shut down opposing teams. The Yellow Jackets will receive added help from a crop of talented freshmen who will be needed when Georgia Tech hosts and competes in the 2011 National Col-legiate Club Championship against the nation’s best teams.

University of GeorgiaThe University of Georgia enters the 2011 season coming off the program’s first Southeast Division Championship and a 13th place mark at Nationals. This year, the team hopes to continue its success. However, the Bulldogs have much to prove after losing first team All-Conference players Austin Stahley and Lawson Floyd. Thus, the team will rely heavily on the skill and experience of returning start-ers Chris Mauer, Andrew Withers and Second Team All-Conference athlete Stephen Hagerman. Open spots in the starting seven will provide the opportunity for younger Bulldogs, including sophomore Alex Lembeck, to develop into impact players. A large freshmen class guarantees that Georgia will have plenty of talent on the bench in the quest for another Southeast Division title.

33

University of TennesseeThe University of Tennessee could be the surprise team of the divi-sion as the Volunteers are a young and maturing team that has the potential to shock the division.

Vanderbilt UniversityComing off a third place finish in the Southeast Division in only their second season of CWPA competition, the Commodores of Vanderbilt University have large voids to fill following the gradua-tion of All-Conference players Matt Popkin (First Team) and goalie Kenny James (Second Team). In light of having no returning se-niors, the team will rely on its competitiveness and endurance to uphold the recent success of Vanderbilt water polo. Second Team All-Conference selection Chris Watkins, junior Katie Kahlbaugh and sophomores Luke Walker, Alex Dioro and Richard Droghini return and are expected to make positive contributions on both ends of the pool. James Street takes over in cage following the loss of James to matriculation. Add in a promising class of first-year play-ers and Vanderbilt appears poised for another solid season in the Southeast Division.

TEXAS DIVISION

Baylor UniversityAfter a year of instability and little success, Baylor University enters this season with a new found excitement. A skilled group of fresh-men come in to help field one of the more talented groups the Bears have fielded in a while. Along with senior leadership of Will Havens and goalie Brian Sanders, the team is optimistic for its chances to improve in the Texas Division.

Rice UniversityHaving lost a large senior class, Rice University’s freshman class looks to bring new talent to the team. First-year players Brett Virgin-Downey, Ravi Sheth, Ross Pepper and Kevin Gravesmill all bring years of high school varsity experience and look to make an impact in the upcoming season. Ivan Huang is working to strengthen his two-meter defensive skills, while the pair of Peter and Paul Abraham look to score goals from the top. Fifth-year veteran Chris Thomas aims to be a powerful set as in past years and continue to rate as one of the team’s top scorers. Due to all the new talent, Rice’s reinvigo-rated bench provides a chance for the Owls to remain competitive against the larger rosters in the Texas Division.

Texas A&M UniversityTexas A&M University hoped to continue its recent success as the Aggies won the Texas Division in back-to-back seasons (2007, 2008) and qualified for four straight division title games (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010). However, the A&M enters the new year in a rebuilding mode after losing the majority of its starters from the previous season, including All-America selection Cameron Glass. However, the in-coming freshmen have shown promise and could revitalize A&M to the point of again competing for the division title. Not a team to lay down, the Aggies will come out swinging with juniors Max Bernau, John Wong, Michael Braun, Troy Goddard and Zach Arend providing veteran leadership. Sophomores Matt Davidson and Sean Alborzi return to once again challenge the Lone Star division’s goal-ies. Two-meter Brian Bloomfield is anticipated to be a formidable opponent to any guard with the potential to bury shots at will. Fur-ther, senior Nick Cox joins Texas A&M for the first time this year to provide additional talent to a team that is on the rise.

Texas State UniversityAmong a group of programs that are growing into their potential as future National Collegiate Club Championship contenders, Texas State University will need to overcome four-time division champion Texas A&M University and six-time winner the University of Texas to brand its mark on the Texas Division landscape. Entering this season with a full roster of both veterans and recruits, captain Corey Parada will provide team leadership as the club moves forward.

Texas Tech UniversityTexas Tech University enters the season in a position of strength with some revenge to exact against division champion the University of Texas. Last year, Tech fell to the Longhorns in the division tour-nament to terminate a potential storybook ending to the program’s season. Having only graduated one senior, Cory Desmarais, Texas Tech is excited for the upcoming season and another chance to con-tend for the division title.

University of HoustonThe University of Houston enters the season with high hopes of improving on the program’s fourth-place finish at the 2010 Texas Division Championship. Led by captains and returning All-Confer-ence players Taylor Beck and Jon Fouty, the Cougars return six-of-seven starters. Key additions were made with incoming freshmen Ketan Kapila and David Fouty joining former Houston All-Confer-ence player Corey DeRutte to help make a run at the Texas Division Championship.

University of TexasThe 2003-06, 2009 and 2010 Texas Division champion, the Long-horns of the University of Texas begin the 2011 season after finish-ing in second place at last year’s National Collegiate Club Cham-pionship hosted by Southern Utah University for the strongest finish the Texas Division has recorded in 10-years of play. Now, the Longhorns’ goal is to bring the National Championship home to Austin, Texas. Despite losing a number of senior players to gradu-ation, Texas continues to sport a bench that is far from short on talent. Strong shooters Ricardo Bello and Bobby Woolweaver, along with two-meter men Andrew Pansick and Kieran Kapila will put up goals for the Longhorns. Rounding out the team are utility play-ers like Jonathan Berezin, Benny Berezin and Thomas Brisson. In the cage for Texas will be goalie, Mike Kruckemeyer. In addition to their offense, Texas plans on every player utilizing strong defensive plays in order to stop their opponents’ top-shooters. Aside from the aforementioned starters, the team has a bench full of solid players eager to make a name for themselves in the pool, including an in-flux of talented freshmen. Seniors Marco Daniele, Klayton Ryman, James Wang and Dan Stratton will see significant minutes in their final season with the Longhorns from head coaches Tom Andrew and Arseni Grokhovski.
