(ONS) and released on 24 September 2012

Summary of findings

The total population of Kent (excluding Medway) was just

above 1.46 million as at 27 March 2011, Census Day.

Of all of the local authority districts in Kent, Maidstone

has the largest population with 155,143 people. Dartford

has the smallest population with 97,365 people.

There are slightly more female residents than male

residents in Kent. 51% (748,127 people) residents were

female and 49% (715,613) were male. This pattern is

seen in all of Kent’s local authority districts.

However, the male to female ratio changes with age. On

the whole there tends to be more males than there are

females up to the age of 29 years. Beyond this age,

there are more females than males, although the exact

age at which there become more females than males

does vary between each local authority district.

Kent has a slightly smaller proportion of 0-4 year olds

than the national average, but on the whole Kent has a

younger age profile than national average, with a greater

proportion of young people aged 5-19 years than

England.

Summary of findings continued

Kent has a smaller proportion of middle aged people compared to

England, particularly in the age group 20-39 years.

Kent has an older age profile than the national average with greater

proportions of people aged 40+ years than England.

Introduction

The 2011 Census of population for England and Wales was conducted by the

Office for National Statistics (ONS). It provides a snapshot of the usually

resident population as at Census Day, 27 March 2011. The usually resident

population is defined as those people who are in the UK and who have stayed

or intend to stay in the UK for a period of 12 months or more.

The figures presented in this bulletin are from the unrounded data by single

year of age and gender released on 24 September 2012. These supplement

the first release of 2011 Census data released on 16 July 2012. At that time

only rounded data by 5 year-age groups and gender was released because

the ONS were still processing the census information for the second release

which is due in November 2012.

Only population by 5 year age group is presented in this bulletin however the

full set of data for single year of age for the County of Kent and all local

authority districts within Kent is available in an interactive toolkit. We have

also updated, with unrounded data, the supplementary bulletins that look at

population change between the 2001 Census and 2011 Census and residents

in households and communal establishments. All of which are available from

the Research & Evaluation team’s first 2011 Census results web pages1.

Further information on the 2011 Census can be found on the ONS website2.

Table 1 illustrates that of all of the local authority districts in Kent, Maidstone

has the largest population with 155,143 people. Dartford has the smallest

population with 97,365 people.

Dartford is the most densely populated district with 13.39 persons per hectare.

Ashford is the least densely populated district with 2.03 persons per hectare.

There are more females to males in Kent and this pattern is seen in all of

Kent’s local authority districts. Canterbury and Thanet have the greatest

proportion of females to males (51.9% female compared to 48.1% male). The

difference is smallest in Swale with 50.6% female compared to 49.4% male.

The male/ female ratio changes with age. On the whole, there are more

males compared to females in the younger age groups, but as age increases

there become more females to males. This is presented graphically in the

form of population pyramids and in tables for each of the Kent local authority

districts, the KCC area, Medway and Kent (KCC area + Medway) on pages 3

to 17.
