AGRICULTURAL HERITAGE Northeast Iowa offers a wide and wonder-ful variety of attractions showcasing the agricultural heritage of our area. Travel south of the metropolitan area on high-way 218 to La Porte City, where you will find the FFA Historical and Agricultural Museum. Heartland Acres Agribition Center is located to the east on Highway 20 in Independence. The small community of Hazelton is north of Independence and offers shopping opportunities and a glimpse of life in an Amish community. A short drive to the south, in Hudson, you’ll find Heritage Farm, where large Percheron hors-es pull wagons to a cabin in the woods for a special time with Santa during the holidays. Tours of Hansen’s Dairy Farm await you in Hudson as well, where you can milk a cow, make butter and see wallabies while learning about this family operated commercial farm operation.

FRANK LLOyD WRIGHTFans of Frank Lloyd Write have two great opportunities to experience his work by traveling just a short distance from the Cedar Valley. Cedar Rock State Park is located just off highway 20 to the east. The Walter House is an example of one

of Wright’s most complete designs. Nearly everything in the house bears his imprint. The Stockman House is located in Mason City, less than 90 minutes to the north on highway 218, and is the first Iowa building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

THE BARN QUILTS OF GRUNDy COUNTy This public art project, designed to highlight the agricultural heritage of Grundy County and the folk art of quilting, can be viewed across the county. Many of the towns fea-tured on the tour have gift shops and art studios for visitors to explore.

ADDITIONAL SITES TO VISITNashua is home to the Little Brown Church in the Vale where thousands have been married and return every summer for a reunion picnic and vow renewal ceremony. The Field of Dreams was filmed just an hour to the east of the Cedar Valley in the small community of Dyersville. The movie site still exists surrounded by family farms and rolling hills of Northeast Iowa. Visitors can bring their bats and gloves and have a game of catch, just as Kevin Coster did on the same field. Dyersville is also home to the National Farm Toy Museum and the

Basilica of St. Xavier, which is one of only 52 in the United States.

FOX RIDGE WINERy1465 L Ave., Traer, (319) 478-8080, www.FoxRidgeWinery.comWineries are popping up all over the state of Iowa and located just 25 minutes south of Waterloo/Cedar Falls, Fox Ridge Winery features gifts, a tasting room and tranquil scenery.

Higher Education The Cedar Valley is home to several excel-lent higher education institutions including the University of Northern Iowa, Hawkeye Community College, Kaplan University and satellite Upper Iowa University location.

UNIVERSITy OF NORTHERN IOWA1227 W. 27th St., Cedar Falls, (319)273-2311, www.uni.eduThe University of Northern Iowa prides itself on putting students first, and has a reputa-tion for providing exceptional undergraduate education, as well as programs at the master’s, specialist and doctoral levels. Building on its historic excellence in teacher education, the university also has outstanding programs in business, natural sciences, humanities and fine arts, and social and behavioral sciences.

The university’s size, 13,200 students, allows it to offer faculty, facilities and academic choices of a large university, while retaining a friendly, small-college atmosphere on a park-like campus. With more than 40 buildings on 940 acres, the campus can still be crossed in an easy walk.

Experiential learning opportunities such as undergraduate research, internships, student teaching, international study programs, com-munity volunteering and cooperative educa-tion encourage a classroom connection to real-world experience. A rigorous liberal-arts core curriculum equips students with a broad understanding and knowledge of how to apply and acquire new information through-out life.

Activities are plentiful for both students and the community. The university offers a full calendar of performances, lectures and exhibits, many of which take place in the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center. The GBPAC also hosts numerous national touring acts. UNI sponsors 18 varsity inter-collegiate sports, many in the UNI-Dome and McLeod Center.

For more information, see www.uni.edu.

The diverse curriculum offers specialized training geared toward business and industry. With over 6,200 students enrolled, HCC is one of the state’s leaders in higher education.

Additional community and continuing edu-cation classes encourage individuals to main-tain life-long academic growth. This begins while students are still in high school as HCC offers classes for high school juniors and seniors to attain college credits early.

Hawkeye also hosts special events through-out the year for residents and visitors alike, including the HCC Artist Series which presents Hawkeye Celebrates the Arts! This Artist Series features outstanding music and theatrical performances in Tama Hall as well as artwork by regional artists in the College’s Library. Additional events include the Scarecrow Scamper cross-country race, youth summer camps and the annual Relay for Life.
