The engineer behind the Cal Poly softballprogram’s emergence as annual contendersfor the Big West championship is seventh-yearhead coach Jenny Condon, whose .624 (189-114) winning percentage at the Mustang helmentering the 2011 campaign ranks first amongcurrent conference head coaches. Condon, who directed Cal Poly to Big West titles in 2007and 2009, also ranks second among confer-ence head coaches with a .707 (82-38) winningpercentage in Big West contests. UnderCondon, the 2005, 2007 and 2009 Big WestCoach of the Year selection, Cal Poly has suf-fered just one losing season.

Despite the program’s 23-24 overall finish in2010, Cal Poly’s 12-9 Big West mark kept theMustangs within the top-three programs in theconference standings for the sixth-successiveseason. Led by designated player Anna Cahn’sselection as Big West Field Player of the Year, five Mustangs earned all-conference praise in2010.

The 2009 season proved to be the finesteffort in Cal Poly’s 17-year Division I tenure asthe Mustangs established single-season pro-gram records for overall winning percentage(.774), conference winning percentage (.857),conference victories (18), fewest conferencedefeats (three) and fewest overall defeats (12)en route to capturing a second Big West titleand a berth in the NCAA Tournament. TheMustangs, who made program history by risingas high as No. 21 in the USA Today/NFCA poll, produced their first NCAA Tournament victoriesat the Division I level and reached the champi-onship round of the Stanford sub-regional.Behind Cahn’s Big West Pitcher of the Yearhonor, a program-record nine Mustangs gar-nered all-conference praise.

Setting the table for an historic 2009 cam-paign was a solid 2008 effort as the Mustangsfinished 24-22 overall and in third place in theBig West standings with a 12-9 mark. Inbetween opening the season with a 5-1 victoryagainst eventual Women’s College WorldSeries runner-up Texas A&M and winning six oftheir final eight contests, Cal Poly posted eight

victories against programs that qualified for theprevious season’s NCAA Tournament anddefended Bob Janssen Field with a 14-3 (.824)home mark. All-Big West first team selectionMelissa Pura headlined a group of seven totalMustangs who garnered all-conference praise.

Prior to the 2009 campaign, Cal Poly’s 2007season ranked as the most-notable year inprogram history. Aside from capturing the pro-gram’s first Big West title and securing its firstNCAA Tournament berth at the Division I level,Cal Poly established then-single-seasonrecords for total victories (39) and overall(.696) and conference (.778) winning percent-age. After dealing defeats to No. 12Washington, No. 6 Northwestern and No. 9Stanford, Cal Poly opened Big West play witheight-straight victories. The Mustangs, who ledthe conference race wire-to-wire, closed theregular season by winning five of their final sixgames and a 3-2 victory against Pacific on May11 not only secured the Big West crown, butalso provided Condon her 100th career victory.Headlined by Big West Player of the Yearselection Lisa Modglin – who also doubled asCal Poly’s first NFCA All-America pick in nineyears – Cal Poly placed eight Mustangs on the2007 all-conference team.

A standout player in the collegiate and inter-national arenas, Condon’s influence at CalPoly was felt instantly as her inaugural 2005squad posted a 35-16 mark. The Mustangswent 15-6 in Big West play and the second-place finish was, at the time, the best showingin program history. Cal Poly’s 27-23 record in2006 was backed by an 11-7 Big West markthat guaranteed a third-place finish. The recordsolidified the program’s first back-to-back win-ning campaigns since the 1996 (23-19) and1997 (37-17) seasons.

Condon’s sides have been especially adeptin defending Janssen Field, having racked up a76-37 (.673) home record under her guidanceand a dominating 40-15 (.727) mark since thestart of the 2008 season.

Under Condon, Cal Poly players haveenjoyed six selections to the NFCA Division I

All-West Region team while 31 total Mustangshave garnered All-Big West first and secondteam selection.

Condon began her coaching career at UNLVin 1994, assisting the Rebels to a third-placefinish at the 1995 WCWS. She relocated toNorthwestern in 1997 before beginning a two-year stint with Oregon State in 1998. The fol-lowing season, the Beavers recorded a school-record 47 wins and advanced to the NCAATournament for the first time in program histo-ry. Head coach Kirk Walker’s staff earnedSpeedline/NFCA Pacific Region CoachingStaff of the Year honors.

Condon spent the 2000 campaign withUNLV before returning to Corvallis in 2001.She served four additional seasons at OregonState until accepting the Cal Poly head coach-ing position on Aug. 25, 2004.

Condon competed collegiately at Iowa Stateand completed a prolific career in 1990. A 1989NFCA All-America second team selection, four-time All-Big Eight honoree and three-time aca-demic all-conference pick, Condon remainsIowa State’s all-time leader for hits (216), runs(120), triples (24) and batting average (.351).The outfielder was inducted into the Iowa StateHall of Fame in 2003. A native of Edina, Minn.,Condon earned a bachelor’s degree in educa-tion from Iowa State in 1991 with a minor inhealth.

This is Cal Poly

More than 19,000 students, nationally-renown courses of study and the top-ranked public master’s university in the western United States

... all 11 miles from the Pacific Ocean.

Located in the central California coastal town of San Luis Obispo, Cal Polycomprises one of 23 campuses in the California State University, thenation’s largest four-year undergraduate university system. Each CSU

campus is given considerable freedom to develop its programs and each insti-tution boasts its own qualities and strengths.

Cal Poly’s Learn by Doing principle of instruction prepares undergraduates forcareers in applied technical and professional fields. From computersto crops, Cal Poly holds that the best preparation for any endeavoris derived through practical application. This ideal has set Cal Polyapart from other institutions and been the school’s driving philoso-phy since its 1901 founding.

Courses at Cal Poly emphasize a high proportion of lab work, field-work and special assignments, culminating with a senior project.Unique on-campus opportunities – such as an organic farm and astudent-run daily newspaper and majors of study ranging from aero-space engineering to wine and viticulture – make hands-on learning a daily real-ity at Cal Poly. In total, Cal Poly confers bachelor's degrees in 64 separate areasof study. Nine of those degrees are exclusive to the San Luis Obispo campus(see next page). For 18-consecutive years, U.S. News and World Report hasranked Cal Poly as the top public master’s university in the western UnitedStates. The publication also ranked Cal Poly’s College of Engineering as the No.2 program in the nation among public non-doctoral institutions (see below).

On-campus activities are headquartered at the renown University Union andCal Poly’s student-run activities have earned enviable reputations across thenation. Week of Welcome offers first-quarter students a successful introduction

to the collegiate experience through a team of trained student leaders and uni-versity officials, all of whom provide academic and social resources, encourageawareness and promote relationships with the campus and central coast com-munity.

Athletically, Cal Poly boasts one of the most successful Division I programsfor an institution of its size. During the 2009-10 academic year, the athletics

department – which sponsors 20 varsity programs – captured BigWest Conference championships in women’s soccer, men’s crosscountry and men’s tennis and enjoyed the All-America selections ofwrestlers Chase Pami and Boris Novachkov. Women’s basketballforward Kristina Santiago was named Big West Player of the Yearwhile softball designated player Anna Cahn earned Big West FieldPlayer of the Year praise. Mustangs earned 42 all-conference hon-ors while seven Cal Poly student-athletes were named Big WestFreshman of the Year in their respective sports.

As testament to Cal Poly’s athletics and academic integrity, 38 Mustangs col-lected Big West All-Academic praise during the 2009-10 school year. The CalPoly Athletics Department also finished second in the Big West Commissioner’sCup, an award presented to the institution with the best overall results in theconference's 18 sponsored sports.

Internationally, Cal Poly was represented at the 2008 Summer Olympics byformer Mustangs Sharon Day (United States, high jump), Jimmy Van Ostrand(Canada, baseball) and Stephanie Brown Trafton, whose gold medal for theUnited States in the discus competition was the first such feat by a Mustang ath-lete.

For the 18th-straight year, Cal Poly was rated by U.S.News and World Report as the best public master’s uni-versity in the western United States in its 2011America’s Best Colleges guidebook. Cal Poly moved upfrom sixth to fifth in the publication’s overall list of thewest’s best universities – including both public and pri-vate institutions – that provide “a full range of undergrad-uate and master’s-level programs but few, if any, doctor-al programs.” The publication ranks colleges that grantdoctoral degrees, such as those in the University ofCalifornia system, in a separate category.

“Perhaps the most important gauge of the effective-ness of Cal Poly’s educational programs is how suc-cessful our graduates are in the real world,” said formerCal Poly President Warren J. Baker, who retired in2010 after serving for 31 years. “We hear that our grad-uates are doing great things and we take pride in that.Getting a ranking in U.S. News for the 17th straightyear, however, helps to validate the quality of our pro-

grams and the success of our gifted faculty inpreparing students to meet the challenges they willface.”

Within individual areas of study, U.S. News andWorld Report ranked Cal Poly’s College ofEngineering No. 2 among public engineering pro-grams for schools whose highest degree is a bach-elor’s or master’s (Cal Poly was bested only by theUnited States Military Academy).

A number of College of Engineering programsranked high in the Best UndergraduateEngineering Programs categories. Cal Poly’sindustrial and manufacturing, computer, electricaland mechanical engineering programs were eachranked as the top program at a public university intheir respective specialty categories. Cal Poly’scivil and environmental engineering tracks wereboth ranked as the second best programs at a pub-lic university.

Donald J. Oberhelman was namedCal Poly’s Director of Athletics onMarch 17, 2011. Oberhelman, 40,

came to Cal Poly after serving as theChief Operating Officer and SeniorAssociate Athletic Director at San DiegoState University. In that capacity, he wasresponsible for the daily operations of SanDiego State’s intercollegiate athletics pro-gram, including budget planning, hiringand evaluation of coaches, facilities andevent management. He also workedclosely with San Diego State’s fundraising team.

“Cal Poly has a great tradition of academic excellence and we wantto continue to build on that tradition in everything we do. For many peo-ple, athletics is the first impression they have of the university. We mustmake sure these impressions are great ones,” Oberhelman said at thetime of his hiring (above). “We know our primary obligation is to devel-op our student-athletes. I want us to be leaders in graduation rates aswell as in championships. But the receipt of a degree is not enough. Itmust be in a field of interest to the student-athlete and it must lead to arewarding career.

“We will not compromise and place student-athletes on the perceivedshortest path to a degree. Here’s the bottom line for Cal Poly Athletics:We are in the business of developing citizens and leaders. Along theway, we can also win championships. Experiencing what it takes to bea champion is a great education in and of itself.”

Cal Poly President Jeffrey Armstrong echoed Oberhelman’s senti-ments.

“Don’s goal is for all of our student-athletes to leave Cal Poly with adiploma and a championship ring,” Armstrong said. “That’s a great goalfor our student-athletes and our fans.”

Prior to his tenure at San Diego State, Oberhelman served as thesenior associate athletic director at Southern Mississippi (2002-07), theeducation coordinator for athletics at Texas A&M (1998-2002) and as acompliance assistant at Florida State (1995-1998). He earned his bach-elor’s in business administration at Kansas State and his master’s inathletic administration at Florida State.
