2011 Annual Report

2011 Financial Statements

The community’s enthusiastic support for John Tyler Community College was certainly welcome in 2011. Economic challenges in a slow recovery year didn’t stop JTCC donors from holding strong to their belief in the College, stepping up generously to ensure the College could fulfill its mission to provide quality educational opportunities that inspire student success and community vitality. The JTCC Foundation Board joins me in thanking you for valuing the strong role John Tyler plays in our community and for rewarding the College with continued investment.Supporters made it possible for John Tyler Community College to do what it does best – offer excellent, affordable, and good-sense educational opportunities to the entire community. Area layoffs inspired the College to increase retooling and retraining efforts – preparing folks for career changes by teaching new skill sets. Along with providing academic benefits to the citizens of its vast service area, the College continued to bring notable economic benefits to the region. Findings from a recent national study showed that for every dollar invested in community colleges, there is a $16 return to the community. That’s impressive. JTCC is a true economic engine.Let’s see just what successes your investment inspired in 2011:

• With tuition and fees about 1/3 of those at a public, four-year college or university in Virginia, JTCC’s affordability helped students realize their dreams of a college education. Speaking of affordability, you may not know that the College serves the largest number of dual enrollment students in the State’s 23-member community college system. By taking college-credit courses in high school, college tuition dollars are saved, and college graduation time is shortened.

• By listening to manufacturing and business friends, the College kept academic programming cutting-edge to satisfy advanced workforce needs. This strengthened ties to local businesses that look to the College for workforce training and educational advancement for employees. As the College reached out to help our business partners in a tough economic year, JTCC positioned itself to grow in an anticipated economic upturn in 2012. And don’t forget, John Tyler serves 20,000 non-credit students and over 1,000 companies though the Community College Workforce Alliance.

• Corporate and foundation support was significant in 2011. HCA, Capital One and Dominion Resources gave generously, as did Cameron, Morgan, John Randolph, Metropolitan Health and Richmond Memorial Health foundations. By investing in the many programs John Tyler offers, corporate and foundation friends kept the education wheels turning.

• The Foundation awarded 102 scholarships to deserving students – most of whom could not have attended college without financial help. Many of these students received their awards from endowed scholarships, such as the Margaret G. Lewis Endowed Scholarship and the Preston and Ann Leake Endowed Scholarship. All of our generous scholarship donors helped raise the number of dollars awarded from the previous year to $138,665.

• Through generous Annual Fund donations, the Foundation was able to provide cutting-edge equipment, up-to-date programming, and opportunities for faculty to further their education and bring new knowledge to the classroom.

• In its second year, the Foundation’s fundraising event – Full Moon Madness – grew beyond expectations and netted $53,277 for student scholarships. With Chesterfield County as our partner, the JTCC Foundation provided an evening fostering good community health and lots of “fun”- raising activities for all ages.

• Local governing boards also stepped up funding to ease the pain of anticipated state budget cuts. We thank our area government leaders for understanding that educating our future leaders is critical to the community’s continued good health.

Again, the Foundation Board joins me in thanking all of you for your loyalty and support to JTCC in 2011. We ask that you please continue your generous backing of John Tyler in 2012. A postage-paid envelope is enclosed so that you can conveniently invest in the College. If you prefer to give online, please visit www.jtcc.edu/giving. The best to JTCC’s community of donors in 2012.

Lewis MayesThrough the funeral services program at John Tyler, Lewis Mayes is embarking on a new, exciting and rewarding career. Mayes retired after 30 years as the chief fire protection officer and emergency coordinator for a local Fortune 100 company. During that time, he served as a volunteer paramedic, as a member of the Chesterfield Fire & EMS hazardous incident team, and as a John Tyler adjunct instructor in hazardous materials response. You could say that he’s come full circle at John Tyler.

For Mayes, funeral services just seems to be a natural step in his career. “I love meeting with families and playing a vital role in their bereavement process. In this profession, it’s definitely not about the money, but the deep-seated pride that I get with helping every family.”

Molly ToncrayLike a lot of people who work in the medical field, Molly Toncray traces what is happening now to what has happened in the past. Toncray recognizes that college classes that didn’t initially excite her, like reading in the content areas, helped her tremendously as she later waded through subjects like anatomy and physiology. She recognizes that time spent in college as a tutor and a work-study student in biology labs make her a better coworker now. She knows connections she made with supportive faculty members at Tyler helped her find her passion and get where she is today – working as a surgical technologist.

Toncray earned an Arts and Sciences degree and an Allied Health, Surgical Technology Preparatory, career studies certificate from Tyler. She then went on to earn a certificate in surgical technology from another community college in Virginia. Now, working in her field, Toncray sees another connection: the one between the support given to the John Tyler Community College Foundation and students like her. “There are so many reasons to support John Tyler, and one of them is that when you are supporting the College, you are putting money into students like me. I didn’t think I could make it in college, but I did. I found myself at Tyler.”

Preston H. and Ann Kelly Leake The Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy was created in 2006 to honor leading philanthropists from each of Virginia’s 23 community colleges as well as the system’s statewide foundation. The John Tyler Community College 2011 Chancellor’s Award recipients were Preston H. and Ann Kelly Leake (pictured above). The Leakes have given generously to John Tyler because they believe in education and the role of community colleges. “We do this because there are so many people who could pursue higher education if they had just a little help, an extra little push at the start.”

Scholarship NightWhile John Tyler Community College’s Foundation supports a number of worthwhile initiatives at the College, its most important work centers around supporting scholarships for students, both through endowment funds and through named scholarship funds. Many of our students academically qualify for scholarship assistance, but many of those students are unable to participate in federal or state financial aid programs. The Foundation scholarships thus represent a chance for deserving persons to change their lives for the better through higher education. Yet for each individual the Foundation is able to help, others are turned away because of the total amounts available. Thus, contributions to the Scholarship Fund or the establishment of named endowed scholarships leave a lasting legacy of solid and meaningful support for the institution and, most importantly, its deserving students. Please consider helping with this important task.

Sincerely,
