COMMUNITY A Year in Review

As we enter another decade, it’s fun to look back to see how far we’ve come - not only as member organizations serving businesses in central Iowa, but as a whole community. The Ames Chamber of Commerce and the Ames Eco-nomic Development Commission (AEDC) continue to strive in the reach of their programming and long-term investments. The Ames Chamber and AEDC continue to work together to promote a business climate conducive for growth, prosperity and a future we can be proud to leave to future generations.

The 2011 accomplishments of the Ames Chamber and AEDC highlighted in the pages that follow are indicative of what’s ahead for Ames. While the economic outlook for our state and our nation continue to be cloudy, Ames con-tinues to be a strong community for business and innovation. In fact, 2011 was the year Ames was named the 13th Geekiest City in the U.S. (Forbes.com). The National Science Foundation measured the top 20 cities in America that had the highest percentage of workers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics during 2010.

Most members of both the Ames Chamber of Commerce and the AEDC know that their investment in these organi-zations is a worthy one, but when we see accomplishments like this, it’s a positive affirmation of what we’ve known deep down all along: Ames really is a community where we can live, work and thrive.

We especially thank 2011 Board Chairs Jolene Randall (Ames Chamber) and Kurt Kuta (AEDC) for their leadership to bring us to this point. On behalf of the Boards of Directors and staff for the Ames Chamber of Commerce and the Ames Economic Development Commission, we thank you for your continued investment and partnership.

Salute to Educators. Over 650 area teachers gathered at Ames High School cafeteria for a luncheon in their honor. A total of 40 organizations and individuals sponsored the lunch and donated gift items to thank our teachers.

Partners in Education (PIE). Through the Education Con-

nections Committee, partnerships continued with Gilbert Middle School Youth Marketplace and Ames High DECA, and Ames High Business & Marketing class programming, placing over 30 Chamber members in area classrooms.

Youth Leadership Ames (YLA). In its second year, YLA is de-veloped by the Chamber and YPA to develop community lead-ership potential of area high school juniors in member districts. Twelve Ames and Gilbert High School juniors are participating in the 2011-2012 class.

Campustown Action Association (CAA). CAA had four successfully at-tended clean-ups in 2011, there are close to 50 paying members, and Summerfest 2011 was a huge hit. GOVERNMENT AFFAIRSIn 2011 the Chamber was able to expand its advocacy pro-gramming due to the tremendous generosity of our Taking Leadership Sponsors. Converse Conditioned Air, Greater Iowa Credit Union, Mary Greeley Medical Center, and Renewable Energy Group provided support and leadership .

2011 Election Season. In September, the Chamber hosted a candidate forum featuring the Ames Community School Dis-trict School Board candidates. Members had the opportunity to hear directly from the candidates regarding why they were

running for the school board and how they plan to make a difference if selected. Another candidate forum was held in October giving members a chance to learn how the can-didates for Ames City Council plan to make an impact on the City of Ames and our business community. In addition, on election days the Chamber once again delivered snacks to the election workers serving at Ames polling locations.

Legislative Lunches. Leg-islative lunch events were held throughout the year to provide members the opportunity to discuss business concerns directly with our elected legisla-tors. In addition to forums with our state policymak-ers and Congressman Tom Latham, 2011 lunch forums also included a panel discus-sion with Story County Supervisors and members of the Ames Community School Board.

State Legislative Updates. For the third year in a row the Chamber provided weekly updates regarding the activity of the Iowa State Legislature. These newsletters kept mem-bers informed throughout the legislative session.

Ames Day at the Capitol. The Chamber put “Ames on Display” when member organizations set up booths in the State Capitol Rotunda to show state legislators how Ames business is thriving. These organizations also helped spon-sor a catered lunch from Hickory Park that continues to be very popular with the legislators and their staff. In addi-tion, Barilla Pasta donated boxes of custom-wrapped pas-ta for each lunch attendee. More than 500 were served at lunch.

Federal Priorities Trip. The Chamber’s annual trip to Washington, D.C. included an Ames delegation made up of representatives from the Chamber staff and board leadership, the City of Ames, Story County, ISU, and ISU Research Park. In addition to meetings with Congressman Tom Latham and Senators Chuck Grassley and Tom Harkin, the Ames contingent also met with the U.S. Chamber as well as advocacy partners working in renewable energy.

Local, State and Federal Partnerships. With several shared priorities, the Ames Chamber of Commerce is grateful to partner with several organizations that allow us to extend the reach of our voice for business. The Cham-ber appreciates our partners at the Iowa Association of Business and Industry, the Iowa Chamber Alliance, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and others.

The Main Street Cultural District (MSCD) celebrated another year as an affiliate organization of the Ames Chamber of Commerce, a State of Iowa Certified Cultural and Entertain-ment District, and its third year as a Nationally Certified Main Street Program. Since its inception, MSCD has grown to over 200 investors - including over 150 businesses.

The mission of the MSCD is to advance and promote downtown as the destination district in the heart of the community. MSCD does this by using the National Historic Trust 4-Point eco-nomic revitalization approach for a downtown community: Promotions, Design, Business Im-provement, and Organization.

As a certified Main Street Iowa Program, MSCD strives to improve the social and eco-nomic well-being of Ames by assisting selected communities to capitalize on the unique identity, assets and character of their historic commercial district.

MSCD 2011 event highlights:

Easter Egg Scavenger Hunt. For the three weeks leading up to Easter, downtown patrons looked for a hidden egg inside 50 shops to win fantastic prizes.

Tune In to Main Street. Live music and family activities drew hundreds to Tom Evans Plaza on Thursday nights throughout the summer.

ArtWalk. In June, a myriad of artists displayed their talents and products at 40 businesses in a District-wide evening for the arts that attracted more than 1000 visi-tors.

Ames Main Street Farmers’ Mar-ket. In its inaugural year, the Ames Main Street Farmers’ Market at-tracted 1500 additional visitors to Main Street every Saturday morn-ing over a period of 14 weeks. The market was a strictly Iowa/lo-cal grown market and incorporated kids’ activities, live entertainment, arts, crafts, and prepared foods.

Fourth of July Parade and Festival. This past year’s parade

and festival had excellent turnout, and for the first time in years, it had perfect weather for attendees. MusicWalk. In September, 35 businesses hosted musicians in their stores and outside on the street. This event has grown in fame and much of the community looks forward to Mu-sicWalk each September.

Holiday Open House. Featuring live music, a celebrity gin-gerbread house contest, the Festival of Trees and a hearty greeting from Santa Claus, the holiday season was celebrat-ed in the District with horse-drawn wagon rides, open houses and over 15 individual businesses hosting children’s activities in store. Back for the third year was the Snow Ball Drop, where 1000 ping pong “snow balls” were launched over Tom Evans Plaza to the crowds below with promotions on each ball. Despite the rain, there was excellent attendance from the community.

In February 2011, MSCD welcomed Tom Drenthe as the events coordinator. Later in the year, he moved into the po-sition as Executive Director as MSCD said goodbuy to its previous director Angela Moore. Tom’s previous position was filled in October by Mandy McWherter. She began full-time status January of this year after graduating from Iowa State with a degree in Business and Event Management.

The AEDC presents Economic Impact Awards to area companies that have made significant contributions to the greater Ames and Story County area through business growth and job creation.

The Ames Seed Capital LLC (ASCF or Fund), incorporated in 1987, is a pool of investable funds contributed by private sources (corporations and individuals) for the purpose of providing equity financing for business start-ups and/or expansions in the Ames community. The Fund’s goals have been to return a profit to the investory, provide a solution to specific small business financing needs, help create and retain jobs, and provide positive economic impact to the Ames area.

Over the past 24 years, the Fund - through its local members - has invested over $2.9 million dollars in five funding rounds! Additionally, local “angel” investors have provided add-on funding due to the participation of the Fund’s investment.

Many of the Fund’s investments have involved companies who have their beginnings at Iowa State University and local entrepreneurs in the Ames community. The Fund has supported companies such as WebFilings, NewLink Genetics, Harrisvaccines, Lincolnway Energy, and Rocket Chips, to name a few.

The Ames Economic Development Commission (AEDC) organizes and promotes sound economic growth in Ames and Central Iowa by stimulating the expansion of existing industry, attracting new enterprises and assuring a favorable community climate for new ideas and economic growth. The AEDC is made up of nearly 100 investor partners representing industry, education and government.

AMES / DES MOINES CORRIDOR

The AEDC and the Greater Des Moines Partnership (Partnership) continued their collaborative marketing effort with Boone and Story counties in 2011 to enhance the external marketing efforts of the Ames/Des Moines Corridor (Corridor).

The partners conducted several marketing trips and worked a number of trade events to showcase the region. Working in close partnership with the Iowa Economic Development Authority, who is the major funder of the Corridor, the region was represented at marketing trips in Illinois, Minnesota, New York, Nevada, North Carolina, Missouri, Texas, and Georgia. Trade events attended included the Industrial Bio-Processing trade event as well as the Institute of Food Technologists, AFCOM, Supply Side West, and hosted a number of Corridor generated prospects, including Hipra, which announced in June 2011 their intent to locate in Ames at the Iowa State University Research Park.

The Corridor also had interaction with a number of companies that continue to be tracked in hopes of site visits in 2012. Additionally, the 2012 agenda includes two international trade shows in Germany related to plant and animal health.

The Ames Economic Development Comission is proud of this regional effort and continues to serve as the administrative entity for the Ames / Des Moines Corridor with the hope and promise of more prospect activity as we move ahead in 2012.

Kreg Tool is the perfect example of a need being defined and the ingenuity to solve a problem. In 1986, Craig Sommerfeld, a tool and die maker by trade but a woodworker out of necessity, solved a home construction problem by designing and building “Craig’s Jig.” This invention by Craig - with encouragement from family and co-workers - led to him building a few more “jigs” and selling them through woodworking shows which has catapulted into a stand-alone business

over time. Today, Kreg Tool Company’s headquarters and manufacturing operation is located in Huxley, IA. Todd Sommerfeld, second generation, is leading the company as President. Kreg products are available through distribution outlets across the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Australia, and more.

Kreg Tool employs over 100 full-time employees who live throughout the Huxley, Ames, and central Iowa area. The success of Kreg Tool has allowed them to embark on a 50,000 square foot expansion which will result in a new distribution center.

Kreg Tool has created a dynamic central Iowa advanced manufacturing company that demonstrates loyalty to their employees and customers and is an excellent community supporter.

NewLink Genetics is a late-stage, biopharmaceutical company focused on discovering, developing, and commercializing novel immunotherapeutic products to improve cancer treatment options for patients and physicians. The company is initially focusing its primary efforts on cancer drug development.

The Ames community and the Iowa State University (ISU) Research Park were chosen in 2000 to house NewLink Genetics’ headquarters, R&D operations, and initial production site. The available skilled workforce, ISU, and the ISU Research Park facilities were key attractions

for the company. Today, NewLink Genetics employs 78 individuals which includes a number of high-level researchers.

A major milestone was reached when in early November 2011 NewLink Genetics successfully completed their initial IPO which raised $43 million and is now listed on the NASDAQ exchange. This was the first IPO in Iowa since 2004! Per company officials, this funding will help to pay for a final round of tests for the company’s pancreatic cancer vaccine, as well as, further development of other product lines and expand its presence in Building 5 at the ISU Research Park.

The Iowa Department of Economic Development, City of Ames, AEDC, Ames Seed Capital Fund, and other local investors have seen the possibilities in NewLink Genetics and financially supported the company’s research efforts.

NewLink Genetics saw the strengths of the Ames community when choosing a location and continue to expand their operations.

The impact of the Fund has enabled many local companies to take the next step in fulfilling their business plans, the acquisition of facilities, and the creation of employment.

The Fund is continuing support of the Ames community and the surrounding area; a new Fund VI is being developed to provide additional investment funding for start-up companies.

The National Science Foundation ranked U.S. cities on their percentages of workers with jobs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. With Ames ranking 13th, we definitely reap the benefits. One example is the Furman Aquatic Center, fully equipped with a lazy river, water slides, diving boards, a water play structure, and a zero-depth entry swim area.
