ABOUT ALMA COLLEGE

Alma College is a nationally recognized private liberal arts college that highlights personalized education, social responsibility and extraordinary achievements. Devoted exclusively to the teaching and education of undergraduate students, the College is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.

With an enrollment of nearly 1,440 students (41 percent men and 59 percent women), the College employs a full-time teaching faculty of 82, of which 88 percent hold a Ph.D. or other terminal degree. The student-teacher ratio is 13:1, and no classes are taught by graduate students.

Alma College was founded in 1886 by Michigan Presbyterians. While still maintaining a close relationship with the Presbyterian Church (USA), the College offers an environment that welcomes students of all religious backgrounds.

The College’s attractive campus is located in the city of Alma (population approximately 9,000), located 45 minutes north of Lansing and 45 minutes due west of Saginaw in the mid-point of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. The school is also the closest league institution to the Upper Peninsula of the state.

More than one third of Alma students participate in intercollegiate athletics. The College offers nine men’s and nine women’s varsity athletic programs.

2011alma scots football season previewOVERVIEWHead Coach Jim Cole returns for his 21st season as head coach of the Alma Scots and has a career mark of 112-82. Cole currently sits atop the all-time Alma College career wins list with his 112 wins, and he earned his 100th career victory against Bluffton in 2008. The Scots are coming off of a 3-7 season in 2010 and are looking to get back into the MIAA race this season.“We are very excited and we think we are a pretty good one-deep football team,” remarked Cole. “The kids have paid their dues and have matured through the process. We believe we are better at every position and we learned some lessions from our struggles last season.”

QUARTERBACKSThe Scots will have a different look at this position in 2011. So. Jarrett Leister, a transfer from Ferris State that did not play in 2010, is slated as the starter. But, So. Rob Feeman, another transfer, has had a solid camp and is in position to contribute as well. In addition, So. Ross Richard, who played in 10 games (four starts) last season, is also in the mix.“It has been a very interesting competition,” said Cole. “Jarrett Leister has had an excellent camp, as has Robbie Feeman, although he could not have contact work until late in camp. The two of them have elevated the bar from last year.” RUNNING BACKSJr. Ed Mason, a part-time fullback last season along with playing linebacker, becomes the full-time running back this season for the Scots. Jr. Aaron Hahn comes into the season with the most carries of any player on opening day and will be expected to add depth to the position.“Running backs will be new for us this season,” stated Cole. “Aaron Hahn is actually the player with the most experience as he probably has a couple dozen carries in his career. Ed Mason has been moved to the position full-time and he is a different kind of back for us. He is big and strong and should be a good blocker, as well as getting the tough yards.”

WIDE RECEIVERSAn interesting position for the Scots, as they saw the departure of Andrew Schaar, but there are several players that have the opportunity to make their own mark. This group is led by Sr. Austin Montgomery, who will be expected to take his game up a notch and be the leader. Sr. Barack Hen-derson, Jr. Michael Lenneman, Jr. Ricky Roth are other players that need to contribute to this group.“Very important that this group continues to develop for us this season,” said Cole. “Austin Montgomery is a senior that has seen a lot of playing time, but never as the go to guy. Barak Henderson is a big, strong kid that has had an excellent camp and those two are guys we are really counting on moving forward.”

OFFENSIVE LINEThis is a veteran group that has returners across the board and will be looked at to set the tone for the offense. Sr. Brad Neumayer, Sr. Chad Stripling, Jr. Matt Scharlow, So. Brian Smith and Jr. Eric Story will lead the way. There are also several younger kids that will be available if the situation arises.“We have all five players coming back and there has been some good competition during camp,” remarked Cole. “A healthy Brad Neumayer will be important for us and we need to find a way to keep everyone on the field. We are excited about this group.”

DEFENSIVE LINEThis unit saw the biggest player departure after the 2010 campaign, but is ready to reload and is excited for the challenge. Sr. Ed Raby will an-chor the group and his leadership has been huge in getting ready for the season. Sr. Brett Mageli, So. Frank Furnari, and Sr. James McCoy will join Raby to start against Heidelberg and this will be a unit that will look to improve each week.“This is where the biggest flip for us has come, as this group went from the most experienced to this season where Ed Raby is the only returning starter,” said Cole. “This group will be important for us as they will have to learn quickly and be able to protect our linebackers.”

LINEBACKERSThe secondary group is filled with players that have expererience due to different situations and is poised to make a big impact in 2011. Sr. Scotty Cole, Sr. Brian Halas, Jr. Luke Kanine and Jr. Andrew Funsch will begin the season as the core that looks to lock down opponents. So. Austin Mc-Clelland is a transfer player that will be looked at to make an impact this season as well.“It is a veteran group and we have five starters returning and we believe this is going to be a strength for us,” said Cole. “We have two second team all-league players in Scotty Cole and Andrew Funsch, while Brian Halas also saw a lot of playing time, as did Luke Kanine because of injuries.”

DEFENSIVE SECONDARYThe secondary group is filled with players that have expererience due to different situations and is poised to make a big impact in 2011.

SPECIAL TEAMSThe punting duties will be handled by Sr. Austin Montgomery, a vet-eran of the job and he will be counted on to help the Scots with field possesssion. Heath Laugal graduated so the place kicking duties heading into the season lie with Fr. Michael Reeves. As for kick re-turning, Sr. Michael Lenneman and Jr. Luke Kanine will begin the season in those roles. “Austin Montgomery has been a solid punter for us and now he needs to become a great punter for us and he has that ability,” said Cole. “As for kicker, Michael Reeves joined us at Christmas time and has a soccer background. He has done a really nice job of de-veloping but he has yet to be in a real ballgame. From the returning standpoint, we feel really good about Michael Lenneman and Luke Kanine as they both have shown some explosiveness.”

SCHEDULEThe Scots opened camp on August 15 and will host Heidelberg College at Bahlke Field in the season-opener. Alma will then travel to Illinois Wes-leyan before hosting Rockford College on September 18. The team wraps up non-league play the following week when they travel to Kentucky Wes-leyan for their first-ever meeting. MIAA action begins October 2 at Hope College.“Our non-conference schedule is challenging,” said Cole. “Of course, our main goal is to win the MIAA, and we will use those four weeks to prepare for league play.”

Jim Cole ‘74 is entering his 21st season at the helm of the Scots in 2011 and has a record of 112-82, earning his 100th career coaching win on September 6, 2008, when Alma defeated Bluffton University, 49-0, at Bahlke Field.

In 2004, Cole led the Scots to the MIAA title and a berth in the NCAA Division III national playoffs, the second time in three years the Maroon and Cream advanced to the NCAA postseason. Alma hosted its sec-ond-ever playoff game as Carthage (Wis.) defeated the Scots 31-28 in ‘04. In 2002, Cole led the Scots to the MIAA title and a berth in the NCAA Division III national playoffs and in 1999, Cole led the Scots to their first MIAA title since 1988. With that title, the Scots advanced to the NCAA Division III playoffs for the first time in school history.

Before becoming Alma’s 28th head football coach in 1991, Cole put in seven seasons at the high school ranks at Midland and New Baltimore-Anchor Bay, and eight years as an assistant under Phil Brooks at Alma. Cole is the all-time winningest football coach at Alma College.

A former All-MIAA and All-District quarterback for the Scots, Cole draws on the championship experiences of playing for the 1970, ‘71 and ‘72 MIAA co-champions and coaching the 1988 co-champ’s defense. He was a graduate assistant for Central Michigan University’s 1974 national championship team and a volunteer coach during the Chippewas 1990 Mid-America Conference title run. His women’s track teams at Alma won or shared seven straight MIAA titles from 1985-91.

Cole’s wife, Wendy ‘87, teaches in the Alma Public Schools. They have three children; Scotty, Jaycee and Taylor.
