When you hear the word accountability, what comes to mind? Most of us think about being disciplined or being

confronted because of something we did or didn’t do. I suppose that’s why most of our thoughts related to the word accountability are usually negative.

Actually, “accountability” is one of the most powerful words in the English language. I believe without accountability in our lives it is impossible to do the incredible things we desire to do. Socrates, the great philosopher said: “The unexamined life is not worth living.” Who is examining your life?

Webster defines accountability as: “The responsibility to someone or some activity.”

The Bible passage Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 says: “Two are better than one because they have a good return for their work, when one falls down his friend is there to help him up, but pity the man who falls down and has no one to help him up.”

You see, accountability isn’t just confrontational. Accountability is also someone helping me do what I want to do, but have a difficult time doing on my own. That’s the power of accountability. I learned this principle first as an athlete. My workouts were

always more productive when I had a workout partner. I needed someone pushing me to the next level and encouraging me on those days when I didn’t feel like working out; a friend helping me to pursue and accomplish my dreams and goals.

We need more healthy accountability in our world today. Certainly as an athlete you need someone challenging and stretching you to do and be your best. Even as a teenager you need accountability.

Did you know the National Center for Health estimates that 76% of today’s high school seniors have used alcohol? 34% have smoked marijuana and 65% won’t be virgins by the time they graduate? These statistics are tragic. Who is helping you do life and encouraging you to make the right decisions? Proverbs 27:17 teaches us: As iron sharpens iron so one man (woman) sharpens another.”

So may you learn the power of accountability and do things in your life that are beyond your imagination. May you find a friend to sharpen you and help you be the very BEST in every area of your life.

W ith shelves full of trophies and a football scholarship to Cal-Berkeley, you would think Stefan McClure would have a hard time

finding a place for his ego; however, the Vista High defensive back/receiver has an air of humility about him that makes him seen like he was just happy to wear the No. 21 uniform for the Panthers. “My fondest memory of high school was winning the 2010 CIF championship with the great group of guys that I grew up with and work hard at practice with to

reach the goal of being champions,” said McClure, who is quick to credit everyone from the coaching staff to

student managers for the team’s success.McClure wasn’t just along for the ride. He had a thing

or two to do with Vista’s 12-1 record and 33-21 victory over Mira Mesa in the Division I title game at Qualcomm

Stadium. The 5'11", 175-pounder was the CIF-San Diego Section Defensive Player of the Year,

intercepting four passes and making 46 tackles. On offense, he was even more impressive,

catching 58 passes for 1,317 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Though McClure will stick to defense with the

Golden Bears, he has high hopes when he

reaches Strawberry Canyon. “In college, I am looking forward to having to start at the bottom and work my way through the ranks and try to become a

true freshman starter at cornerback,” said

McClure who was on the Max Preps All-State team,

earned a spot in the U.S. Army All-American Game and

even won CIF in the triple jump with a leap over 48 feet.

“The transition to college will be a challenge physically and mentally with school being harder,” explained McClure. “In football, all the players will be bigger, faster, stronger and smarter on the field. I will need to improve on my speed to be able to stay with the faster and quicker receivers in the Pac-12 conference. In the classroom, I will have to adjust to the college teaching and larger class sizes with a lot more reading.”

And there is no doubt McClure will credit someone besides himself no matter what kind of success he has.

Mathis Sets Goals to Conquer Next Big Stage

la Jolla Country Day’s Chloe Mathis saw her future in volleyball as a freshman. Torreys coach Peter Ogle had his incom-

ing ninth graders answer questions about the upcoming season and careers. Mathis was quite bold in setting her goals: 1. Win a state champi-onship; 2. Earn most valuable player honors in that match; 3. Become an All-American; 4. Play in the Pac-12 conference.

Now, four years later, the Under Armour All-American, state MVP and two-time state champion must come up with a new list when she hits the University of Arizona campus later this summer. “I am looking forward to the fans and playing in the McKale Center. It’s

an amazing place and I get chills every time I think about stepping onto that court,” said Mathis, a setter, who was also the CIF player of the year.

Mathis should be used to the big stage as she and her teammates compiled a 72-4 record en route to back-to-back state titles. In the Division IV state finals in December, Mathis racked up 33 assists as the Torreys dismantled Sacred Prep (Atherton), 25-10, 25-15, 25-13 in the finals at San Jose State.

“We enjoyed the ride and the experience because we were all relaxed and focused but having fun,” Mathis remembered. “With the five seniors we had, it was real special to us, so

we took repeating as state champions pretty seriously. Every time we left the weight room we’d slap a sign on the door that said ‘STATE’ on it. I think that mentally helped our team focus on our goal to win state again.”

Mathis knows there will be an adjustment period at a new school in maybe the tough-est conference in the country when it comes to women’s volleyball. Still, Mathis has the skills and passion to compete for her spot in practice. “I think there is always room for improvement in anything that you do, so working to sharpen my skills on the court will always be a constant for me,” Mathis said.

Monster Season for Carlsbad’s Sherwood

CarlsbaD high’s Rainer Sherwood doesn’t mind taking a stroll down memory lane and putting you in the

pool with him. Tied 9-9 with Vista in the CIF-San Diego Division I finals, the junior was able to free himself and bury a shot into the back of the goal with 1.97 seconds left, giving the Lancers their eighth consecutive CIF San Diego Section Division I title. “The game was so close and competitive; it felt awesome to score with two seconds left in front of my family and friends,” Sherwood remembered. “My heart still races when I think about the situation.”

The 6'4" Sherwood was in a pretty difficult situation at the beginning of the 2010 season. After 11 seniors graduated, Sherwood was the lone returning player who had to adjust from a steady role player to a go-to guy for the Lancers. He responded with a monster

season that saw him score 92 goals, get 46 steals and draw 58 ejections. “Our season was very exciting,” Sherwood said. “We worked very hard leading up to the high school season and we had close, competitive games all season long that I think that gave us an edge when it came time to perform during the end of the season. It felt awesome to have all that hard work pay off in such an exciting championship game.”

The work hasn’t stopped for Sherwood, who is playing with the Orange County Water Polo Club in the offseason, and competing for the Lancers’ swim team, in addition to early morning trips to the weight room. “All I can do is work hard and make myself the best player between now and next year,” he said. “My teammates are doing the same and we are trying to be the best team we can be. That’s all we can really do.”

Despite all his success, Sherwood sees the need for improvement in his technical game before he can be an effective player at the collegiate level. “My offensive game has a lot of room for improvement like outside shooting and driving center shots,” remarked Sherwood. “I think I can defend any high school player out there and that skill will continue to progress, but my offense will be my main focus leading into the college game.”

Oregon-bound Grabill Runs to Amazing Career

BesiDes Death anD taxes, there are very few sure things in life. But when it comes to San Diego County cross

country, you can add Rancho Bernardo’s Molly Grabill to the list of certainties.

The senior claimed her fourth consecutive CIF Division I title in November, making her one of the few athletes to dominate her sport from the first time she set foot on a high school campus and she is quick to credit Broncos coach Terry Dockery with keeping on an even keel throughout her prep career.

“I owe everything to my coach,”

Grabill said. “His faith

in me has

made me the athlete that I am today. I am so grateful to have him as a coach and trust him with everything. He helps me keep a level head and inspires me to do my best.”

Dockery had to call on all of his skills this season as Grabill, the 2009 state champion, raced with a proverbial target on her singlet. After winning the county title for the fourth time, Grabill finished a disappointing sixth at the state meet, but rebounded at the Foot Locker West Regionals to finish second and was ninth at the Foot Locker Nationals.

“My cross country season was all about learning to overcome mental obstacles,” said Grabill, who will run for the University of Oregon in the fall. “I had to understand that I couldn’t have the perfect race every time,

and I couldn’t let a bad race bring down my season.”

Grabill had few doubts about selecting Oregon, which is often regarded as one of the top track and cross country programs in the nation. The coaches, facilities and surrounding community made it an easy choice for Grabill, who might surprise you with what she is looking forward to in Eugene. “I am most excited about the food,” Grabill said. “I know dorm food has a bad reputation, but I feel I am going to like the all-you-can-eat aspect of it. A close second is the opportunity to train with the best in the country and be coached by the best.”

For a freshman in college, eating and training are a sure bet.

Brewer Running His Way to Oregon

RanCho buena vista’s Chris brewer knows his way around the Vista campus a lot better than he did when

he was a freshman. With a little more bravado than skill, Brewer set out on his first run with the Longhorns’ best varsity runner, but soon realized he wasn’t able to keep pace. The captains told him to head back to campus, while they finished their run. He ended up however, on the corner of El Camino and Palomar Airport Road, which is more than seven miles from campus.

Now, Brewer, a senior, knows his way around the various cross country courses and tracks so well that he has found his way to the University of Oregon, where he will concentrate on the middle distances. Brewer

chose Oregon over Pacific 12 Conference rivals UCLA, Arizona State and Cal.

Those schools were interested in Brewer because of his work ethic and ability to be at his best in the biggest meets. Brewer finished second in the CIF Division I finals (15:42) just three seconds behind Ryan Urie of Patrick Henry (15:39).

Then, the following week, Brewer took eighth place at the state meet in Fresno with a respectable time of 15:05. In addition, Brewer won the prestigious SoCal Invitational at Guajome Park with a time of 15:34.86.

And Brewer didn’t just rest on his cross-country laurels this season. He used his exceptional speed to finish second in the 1,600 (4:13.33) to Torrey Pines’ Matt

Carpowich (4:09.20) at the CIF San Diego Section Track & Field Championships. Many believe that Brewer will redshirt during the cross-country season to build his strength for track where he will need it to compete with veteran middle distance runners.

Forman wins CIF Singles Title

With a sCholarship seCureD, many seniors would shift themselves into neutral for the high school season,

but Karen Forman flipped the switch into overdrive and it ended with a CIF-San Diego Section singles and team title for the Falcons.

Forman accepted a scholarship to Wake Forest, where her brother Steve played tennis from 2007-2010, won the Demon Deacons first-ever national championship and was a three-time doubles All-American. “The feeling of being committed to college early this year was a great feeling, but it motivated me to train harder, so I can get better and impact my college team next year.”

Forman had some unfinished business at Torrey Pines. She and her teammates defeated

Rancho Bernardo 14-4 for the Falcons’ 21st consecutive CIF championship. Individually, the No.2-seeded Forman breezed into the finals where she found herself pitted against No. 1 seed and teammate Tory Parravi. Forman battled back after losing the first set to earn the title in a 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-1 upset victory. “This season was a memorable and fun year. As a team we had a lot of laughs,” Forman said. “Being part of Torrey Pines’ CIF winning streak and helping keep it alive was great.”

Forman isn’t apprehensive about heading to the East Coast to continue her tennis career. In fact, she can’t wait to get to Winston-Salem. “I am looking forward to college tennis, meeting new friends and

having an entirely new experience outside my hometown,” she said. “The school has great academics and I liked the tennis team and program a lot. The campus is beautiful and the weather is nice too. I also like the tough competition in the Atlantic Coast Conference. I know that college will be different, but I can’t wait to meet new people and play for a college tennis team.”

But before heading off to college, Forman reflected on how she wanted to be recognized among all the other tennis greats for the Falcons. “I’d like to be remembered as a good teammate, student and friend at Torrey Pines,” she said.

And Forman did that this season at full speed.

Maggie sevilla’s part-time sport turned out to be a full-time celebration for Scripps Ranch. The senior keyed a

defense that locked down Torrey Pines in the CIF-San Diego section Division I finals in a wet and wild match that battled to a 1-1 tie in regulation and through a pair of overtimes. Then, in a shootout for the title, the Falcons scored three times and earned the fourth field hockey title in the school’s history.

“It was absolutely grueling. The feeling of victory was thrilling and I especially savored celebrating with my team, parents, family and friends,” Sevilla said. “It made all the hard work put into field hockey well worth the effort. We played hard every minute of every game, yet we had fun while playing. We had

10 seniors on the team that played four years together, so, of course, we wanted nothing more than to win CIF.”

Sevilla spearheaded the Scripps Ranch backline from her center defense position. Such a move was seamless for Sevilla, who is a catcher in softball and sweeper in soccer, and that experience and talent enabled Sevilla to be the CIF Division I player of the year. “The defensive mentality was not new as I love seeing the whole field in front of me with plays constantly evolving,” Sevilla said. “This requires those of us in the backfield to adjust and react as flawlessly as possible.”

Yet, with such accolades, Sevilla won’t be reaching for her field hockey stick in college. Instead, she accepted a scholarship to play softball at University of Pittsburgh. The first team All-CIF catcher hit .363 in 2010 for Scripps, but in club competition she played second base, so the Panthers are getting a multi-dimensional athlete.

“I am looking forward to playing softball and studying in a new city,” Sevilla said. “I love the atmosphere and the people at Pitt. I had visited a number of colleges, but fell in love with the competitive nature of the town and hard-core fans that support Pitt, the Pirates, Penguins, and, of course, the Steelers.”

It seems like a perfect fit for another champion from the West Coast.

Sophomore Luo captures CIF Golf Crown

Torrey pines’ minJia luo played her best golf when the stakes were the highest, and the results were medals for

her and more championship banners for the Falcons. Luo, who is only a sophomore, was instrumental in helping Torrey Pines win the state championship after finishing second in the Southern California Regional just a week earlier. Then, for good measure, Luo captured the CIF-San Diego Section individual championship to cap a near perfect season.

“I think our team had a really successful season and we were so happy that we won state,” Luo said. “Also, I’m glad that I won

the San Diego section. That (second round) was the best round I played in my whole season.”

With those atop the leader board seemingly imploding on every hole, Luo shot a three-under 69 to earn the title, in which six Falcon golfers finished in the top 10. It was Luo’s cool demeanor that made the difference in the final round. “For me, the golf season is fun to play,” Luo said. “I feel very relaxed when I’m playing the matches. They help me improve my game and I learned more experiences.”

Luo gained valuable experience as Torrey

Pines downed Torrance by nine shots in the final (396-405), which was played at the Red Hill Country Club in Temecula. Luo tied for fourth with a round of 77.

Despite her success, Luo knows she must improve all facets of her game if she wants to compete at the college, level and perhaps the LPGA tour one day.

“I don’t know a lot of things about college golf, but I really want to participate in it,” she said. “To play there, I need to hit the ball farther, make my swing more consistent, and I need to work on my short game more, so I can be accurate.”

Dumiak Goes Out a Two-time Champ

Perhaps the happiest people to see Jen Dumiak graduate are the custodians at La Costa Canyon High. They won’t

have to chase the hard-working senior out of the gym after she has hoisted up a couple hundred jump shots and dribbled the ball so hard that their ears would be left ringing. This summer that will become American University’s problem, where late-night work-outs and a key to the gym are the perfect snack for Dumiak.

The 5-foot-10 guard led the Mavericks to a pair of CIF San Diego Section Division I titles during her career, and it was capped off with a convincing 76-41 win over San Diego in the finals at the Jenny Craig Pavilion at USD. “My fondest athletic moment is definitely winning CIF senior year,” she said. “It was an amazing accomplishment for our team and definitely a great way to go out. There is no

sweeter feeling than being the best team in our San Diego division.”

Dumiak left opponents feeling a little sick after she dominated games from the perimeter. She averaged 22.1 points per game, 5.2 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 3.1 steals per game. However, Dumiak is quick to point out that LCC was far from a one-woman show. “I was so successful this season due to my teammates,” Dumiak said. “Without them, nothing I accomplished would have been

possible. They did a great job of rebound-ing, setting screens to get me open, and just picking up their all-around game when we needed it the most.”

Dumiak believes she must pick up her game if she wants to contribute early in her career at American University. While she chose American for its academics and success on the floor, Dumiak is heading back east this summer to get a head start on the things she thinks she needs to improve. “The college level is a huge step up from high school,” Dumiak said. “I need to get quicker with lat-eral movement on defense and get stronger. I will be a one or two guard so my shooting range needs to improve as well.”

And if the gym is open, Dumiak will be there to annoy the custodial staff.

Johnny Dee’s Magical Season

T he ranCho buena v sta high basketball player with the mythical name and the magical game had a season that many

will never soon forget. Johnny Dee, the 6'1" senior with shooting range that is measured in area codes not feet, made people remember that well-honed skills and all-out hustle still pack gymnasiums on cold winter nights.

Dee led San Diego County in scoring, pour-ing in 32.8 points per game with a variety of twisting and turning assaults at the basket, as well as long-range jumpers which sometimes defied logic and reason. Case in point: the Longhorns’ guard torched El Camino, known as one of the most physically intimidating teams in the county, for 51 points en route to a 86-84 victory that garnered the Avocado West title.

RBV finished the year with a glossy 26-4 record and earned a berth in the CIF-San Diego Section Division I semifinals and it was due mainly because of Dee and a group of unsung teammates who knew their collective roles and played them perfectly.

“I would like to be remembered as some-one who played with a lot of passion and was good at what I did,” Dee said. “I think our season was successful because of the hard work that my team and I put in the off-season. I worked really hard to get better and to have a great senior year.”

Dee, who recently announced he will join the

University of San Diego Toreros basketball program, knows he will have to move from shooting guard to the point because of his size and stature, yet he is undaunted by the chal-lenge it presents. “I am looking forward to the challenge of college,” he explained. “Adapting to a new team and having to learn a different role is going to be a tough transition because I will be playing against bigger and better play-ers. I am going to have to get stronger and work on my playmaking skills.”

That is a challenge Dee is ready, willing and able to undertake.

Duke-bound Trees Captures Two Crowns

Katie trees has founD that you can have your soccer and play lacrosse, too. The Torrey Pines High standout

never intended to be a multi-sport athlete in college, but when Duke University didn’t have problem it, Trees couldn’t wait to sign her letter-of-intent for the Blue Devils.

“Playing two sports was not a necessity, but the soccer coach Robbie Church and lacrosse coach Kerstin Kimel were both on board for it,” Trees said. “They wanted to support me to see that I got the opportunity to play both soccer and lacrosse, as they both thought I would be an asset to their programs.”

What had Duke coaches so willing to share was an athlete with the ability to find the back of the net. With the right blend of speed and power, Trees scored 28 goals and

tallied 15 assists for the Falcons’ soccer team and was even more productive for the lacrosse squad with 53 goals and 23 assists. Both efforts produced CIF titles. Such an athlete is a dream for not one, but two programs.

Trees has made many wishes come true this season for her and her Falcon teammates, and especially for outgoing soccer coach Dennis Costello, who retired after 26 seasons at the school. Torrey Pines defeated Poway,

1-0, in the CIF San Diego Section Division I finals

and then beat Bullard (Fresno), 5-2, to capture the Southern California Regional title. “We achieved as a team, not as

individuals, and that translated into a great season individually for each player,” Trees said. “I was successful this year because of all the motivation that was around me for our team to win a state championship.”

Trees believes she can handle the stress of two sports and a full academic load at Duke, where both the soccer and lacrosse teams are nationally ranked. “I think the transition from high school to college will be somewhat difficult just as it is for most kids who are leaving their parents and going across the country,” she said. “I know I will be so busy with many different athletic activities that I will not have a moment to even miss being at home.”

And Trees wouldn’t have it any other way.

One and Done for RB’s McKenna

RanCho bernarDo’s reeD mCkenna made his only year of high school soccer a memorable one. The senior

scored 26 goals and added seven assists, including a hat trick in the CIF-San Diego Section Division I final, in leading the Broncos to a 4-3 win over Torrey Pines for the school’s first boy’s soccer title.

“I would describe this season as memorable,” McKenna explained. “Our season was filled with high points and low points and we were fortunate to end well by winning a CIF championship and advancing to the semifinals of the Southern California Regional tournament. Because this was my first year of high school soccer in California, I especially enjoyed playing alongside my classmates and friends.”

McKenna didn’t play high school soccer because he was at the beach or at a local

skate park. No, he was competing at the United States Development Academy with the nation’s best youth players. It paid off for McKenna, a high-scoring forward, who earned valuable international experience and a scholarship to UCLA.

Yet, it wasn’t an easy decision not to play with his classmates. “It was fairly difficult to not play high school soccer until my senior year,” McKenna said. “Although I wanted to represent my school and play alongside my friends, I did what I felt was best for my development. I was successful this year because I have worked hard at soccer my entire life. I did everything in my power to make the most of my first and only high school season.”

Perhaps McKenna saved his best for his last high school match. His three goals propelled the Broncos over the Falcons in a

tough, CIF final. While many would think that he was doing his school a favor by playing this season, McKenna believed he learned a lot on the pitch with his classmates. “As a senior with a lot of experience, I was placed in a leadership role,” McKenna said. “Apart from this, I was forced to tweak my style of play as a result of different teammates, small field dimensions and turf-playing surfaces. This helped improve other elements of my game.”

So in the end, it was a win-win situation for both McKenna and the Broncos.

JESuS AMBRIz’S ROAD to the podium at the state wrestling meet in Bakersfield had a lot more to do with grit and desire

than natural talent. The Rancho Buena Vista senior had his

arm taped from bicep to wrist after hearing a pop during his second round match against

Jonathan Castellow of Exeter. Ambriz contin-ued his run to the semifinals defeating Paul Yoo of Cypress 5-4 to finish his first day in the 189-pound weight class.

Then, on the final day of the tournament, Ambriz was pinned by Morgan McIntosh of Santa Ana Calvary Chapel in the semis at the 2:29 mark of the second period. McIntosh was no easy foe, being ranked as the No. 1 wrestler in the country and headed to Penn State.

So, instead of packing his bags both mentally and physically, Ambriz bore down

and after losing his first consolation match rebounded to defeat Yoo (2-1) for the fourth time this season, earning a fifth-place medal.

Ambriz, who had never wrestled before high school, accomplished quite a bit at the local level during the 2010-2011 season. He won the CIF-San Diego Section Division 1 title at 191 pounds and then went to the Masters Tournament with high expectations. The sixth-ranked wrestler in the state in his weight class showed he was the best in the county by defeating Augie DeSantis, 7-2, to claim the Masters title.

Berkeley-bound Williams Shoots and Scores

V ICTORIA WILLIAMS’ toughest decision turned out to be the easiest one. The Vista High senior didn’t

want to take a recruiting trip to Cal-Berkeley. She was never a fan of the athletic programs, didn’t like the weather or the surrounding city, and thought it was too far from home. But because the Cal coaches were so persistent, Williams reluctantly agreed to visit the campus and by the time Williams boarded a plane back to San Diego, the decision was clear and simple. “I fell in love with the school. It is gorgeous, except that it’s on an incline and I will be walking up hill all day. I clicked with the team right off the bat and I don’t think there is a better coaching staff around,” Williams explained.

Williams certainly clicked with her Vista

Panther teammates. With Williams at the controls, Vista won four consecutive CIF-San Diego Division I championships, including a 13-5 mauling of Torrey Pines in the finals this season, which capped off an incredible career for Williams, who finished with 547 career goals, the most in county history.

While the talent in the pool was obvious, the Panthers were a team that relied on chemistry and experience to defeat teams that were constantly searching for new ways to dethrone them. “Our success can be credited to the years of practice. My teammates and I have been playing together from two to seven years, so we all know everyone’s playing styles and complement each other well in the water. We had team meetings at least twice a week to keep our

eyes on the prize,” Williams said. And despite the enormous target on its collective backs, the Panthers turned back all comers this season

Although she will be leaving her comfort zone at Vista for the swirling seas of collegiate water polo, the 5'11" Williams doesn’t seem fazed at all. In fact, she relishes the challenge of starting all over again. “I can’t wait for my skills to improve and to be able to compete against my new opponents,” Williams said.

“I am excited to grow into my own

person, but I know I will miss the simplicity of high school.”

When Daniel Camarena was a fresh-man at Cathedral Catholic, some of his thoughts were about what

he would do during his senior year and how he would be remembered. Now, as a newly minted graduate, one would think Camarena and his classmates accomplished their mis-sion. “As a senior, I wanted to leave a legacy behind which I feel I did,” Camarena said. “The best part of it was being on the ball field every day with my best friends playing the game we all love.”

Cathedral defeated El Capitan, 3-2, to win its third CIF-Division III championship in four years. In addition, the Dons set a school record

for wins (30) and won the highly acclaimed Lions Tournament. Leading the way on the mound was Camarena who compiled a 9-1 record with 90 strikeouts and a 0.63 earned-run average.

Never was Camarena better than in the CIF finals where he turned back every El Capitan rally. It was sweet redemption for Camarena who in last year’s title game gave up four runs in the sixth inning to give the Vaqueros the championship. Camarena believes he was better prepared for the title tilt because of his offseason training. Three days a week he worked out at the Gonzalez Sports Academy in hopes of getting faster and stronger. That and a strong family made it easier for Camarena to

achieve his goals and select USD as his college. “This offseason I am looking forward

to moving onto the next level of baseball, whether it is pro or college,” he said. “With the help of my family, I think it will be a smooth transition.” It may be difficult for Camarena to get past the CIF finals because that was his dream since his early days at Cathedral. “When I think of high school, I will remember getting the final out in the CIF championship game and hearing the crowd roar at Tony Gwynn Stadium,” he said. “I will never forget that moment and I will carry that win with me for as long as I live.”

Will it be Toreros or Yankees for Dons’ Camarena?

When faCeD with a Challenge, Haley Steele won’t rest until the job is done. It didn’t bother the

Poway High senior that her school hadn’t won a league title in ten years or hadn’t appeared in the CIF-San Diego Section Division I finals in that same time period. Steele and her teammates just punched the time clock on the field and their talents took care of the rest. Steele, who according to head coach Jim Bennet, may be one of the best

softball players in Poway

history, led the Titans to a 25-7 overall record and their

first outright Palomar League title and second appearance in the finals.

The four-year varsity starter and 2011 Palomar League Player of the Year capped off her outstanding season batting a school record .487 with 55 RBI’s and a .814 slugging percentage. Defensively the shortstop committed only four errors in 157 chances. “I work hard because I feel like that’s what my team deserved from me. Everyone contributed to our team’s success. I personally had the senior mindset that this was the last year to do something big, so I worked hard and went out with a bang,” said Steele.

Steele’s hard work paid off as she accepted a scholarship to Arizona State University. It didn’t take much for Steele to see herself in a Sun Devils uniform. “It just fit. I fell in

love with the campus the second I walked in,” Steele said. “I’m looking forward to the whole college experience. The fact that this will be first time living away from home, academically challenging myself, meeting new people, but above all, playing for one of the best college softball programs in the country. I can’t wait to become part of the Sun Devil family and contribute to their success.”

Even though she will be a short plane flight from home, Steele will always have fond recollections of her time spent on the diamond at Poway. “My memories will just be playing ball on the field for practice every day,” she said. “Hanging with the team and the coaches and getting our work done while having fun is the biggest thing that I will miss.”

W hen bennett birD is asked how he wants people to recall the 2011 season, he will take you to the Westview High campus and point you in the direction of the gymnasium. “I would like to be

remembered for the banners we placed in the gym,” Bird said. “With a CIF and (Palomar) league championship, we have had an exceptional season.”

That would be no exaggeration. The Wolverines (33-5 overall, 9-1 in league) ripped through the regular season dominating the Palomar League before getting the No.2 seed in the CIF-San Diego Division II playoffs. Westview then took down mighty La Costa Canyon, the No. 1 seed, in a five-game thriller (25-17, 21-25, 27-25, 15-25, 15-13) to capture the title.

While defeating the back-to-back champion Mavericks in the finals was a great achievement, Bird thought the team blended together well earlier in the year so the end result was not surprising. “The highlight of the season was definitely beating LCC in the fifth game 15-13 to win a CIF title,” Bird said. “We had only three seniors last year, so basically our whole starting lineup returned this year. We played well together the year before; so we were all comfortable with each other and got along well.”

Team chemistry wasn’t the only thing that improved over time for the Wolverines. Bird worked with local trainer Trent Suzuki, who also trained basketball/volleyball star Chase Budinger as a student. Suzuki put Bird through some tough workouts to improve his game in all areas. “During the offseason, I trained with him weekly, and, in a matter of months, he increased my vertical about six inches,” said the 6-6, 170-pound Bird. “He also made me faster, stronger and tougher mentally.”

Even with all the triumphs, Bird is looking forward to the summer when he will be traveling as a member of the U-19 team for beach volleyball that will travel to Croatia. However, Bird knows that he must use these experiences to make a smooth transition to college volleyball. “I think I will have to improve on my passing and defense,” said Bird, who is being recruited by Hawaii and UCSB. “Everyone can hammer the ball at that level. It’s the little things that make a good player great.”

When kenDyl stewart returns to La Costa Canyon for a high school reunion in a decade or two, she

won’t mind if no one considers that she ever swam a lap for the Mavericks. “Ten years from now, I would like to be remembered as the girl who was really friendly,” Stewart explained. “I don’t care if people know that I’m a good swimmer. I would want to be remembered as someone who is a good sport, a supportive teammate, and an excellent role model.”

But it may be difficult for her classmates to get past that fact because she may be on their televisions during the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Stewart, who will skip her senior season in order to prepare for the Olympic Trials, left her mark at the CIF Division I Finals. The junior shattered the 22-year-old record in the 100 freestyle (49.77)

and won the 100 backstroke (54.61) for the third consecutive year. Only an entry snafu did not allow Stewart a chance to break the national record in her best event the 100 butterfly. Still, she considered the season a success.

Despite all the accolades this season with the Mavericks, Stewart enjoyed the relationships with her teammates almost as much as her record setting in the pool. “High school season was really fun for me this year,” Stewart said. “I always love doing high school swim, mainly because of the kids and friendships that are made. I’m not sure if I’m just more outgoing now, but regardless, my teammates made my last high school season as fun as it could be.”

Now, the real work begins for Stewart who won’t enter college until after the Olympics. While she may be considering West Coast

schools with top-level swim programs, Stewart’s focus now is on earning a spot on the national team that will spend a few weeks in London next summer.

“Training for the Olympic Trials will be pretty intense,” Stewart said. “Now, I train six days a week for three hours and twice a day two-to three-times a week. It sounds crazy, but pretty much all my time both at the pool and away from it will be devoted to my preparation for the upcoming meet.”

Ettelson Caps off Year with Perfect Day

Danny ettelson did a lot of heavy lifting for the Mt. Carmel swim team and the result was a perfect day at

the CIF-San Diego Section Division II finals. Ettelson, with the help of some teammates, accounted for 96 of the Sundevils’ 234 points en route to the CIF title. The senior sprinter anchored two relays and won two individual events, capping an ideal day in the pool.

“My season was perfect. I saw my teammates succeed so much and got to spend so much time with them having fun,” Ettelson said. “Personally, I exceeded my own expectations by breaking the school record in the 100 free, getting a personal best and school record in the 50 free, and getting the school record on the 200 medley relay team.”

Ettelson won the 50 (21.05) and 100 (45.96) free and then swam the anchor legs in the 200 free relay (1:28.61) and 200 medley

relay (1:37.14) to claim his four medals, and he was as quick to dish out the compliments as he was in the pool. “I owe so much of my success to my coach Dan Peck,” Ettelson said. “He does such a great job preparing for the championship season and helping me to reach my full potential. Individually, I succeeded from the hard work I put in and the emphasis I put on technique this year. The team spirit helped in the mental aspect and encouraged me to go fast.”

While attending the University of Denver in the fall, Ettelson expects less-than-perfect days when he first hits the pool with his new teammates. “It may be tough, but I will need to take it all in stride and be flexible and willing to learn,” he said. “I will need to train hard and learn to go fast more consistently.”

And even in his toughest times next year, Ettelson will have a memory that will carry

him over the rough spots. “Having a perfect meet at CIF’s this year with four wins tops it all,” he said. “I know I will remember that day forever.”

TP’s Knowles Has Season to Remember

What was so easy for Torrey Pines’ Anna Knowles this season will become more difficult when

she steps on a college campus. The senior attacker burned the nets for 66 goals and dished off 23 assists as the top-ranked Falcons won their second consecutive CIF-San Diego Section Division I title, dismantling Rancho Bernardo 18-5. Knowles was perfect in the finals scoring four goals on four shots as Torrey Pines ended up the No. 4-rated team in the state.

For Knowles, it was about being efficient on offense and committed to defense, while staying within the team concept. “We had a new defensive coach, Hanly Heubeck, and she really improved our defense,” Knowles said. “By the end of the season, our defensive unit was the best it has ever been. Our offense was constantly improving thanks to our head coach Kaitlin Swagart. Our plays always kept other teams on their toes. My goals were to really work the plays, not take unnecessary shots, and to always re-defend all the way back to the defensive end.”

The Falcons lost their opener to Carondolet and Coronado early in the season, but roared back and won their last 14 matches on their way to the Palomar League

and county championships. “We started off a bit rocky, but we got right back on track and went undefeated in league and won CIF,” Knowles said. “We had some injuries this season, but overcame those and still worked together as a team.”

Knowles will carry her enthusiasm for lacrosse to the University of Vermont, where she will realize a dream and begin the climb of playing at the Division I level. “Since I was little, I wanted to go to school on the East Coast,” Knowles explained. “Vermont has so much to offer, and I can’t wait to explore every aspect of it. The academics will be the hardest for me so I will definitely have to improve my study habits and focus to keep up with homework and my grades.”

Doyle’s All Business When it Comes to Lacrosse

boYs lacrosse

SPOTLIGHT SPORTS 33

Torrey pines’ sean Doyle is all business, but instead of a suit and a briefcase, he carries a stick and a helmet. Profits are

measured in goals and assists, not dollars and cents, and Doyle certainly knows how to make a profit at the expense of the other lacrosse teams in San Diego.

The junior attacker made defenses shake in their collective shoes as he had 50 goals and 42 assists in just 23 matches for the Falcons, who won the CIF Division I title with a 10-7 victory over Poway.

When talking to Doyle, one gets the impression that he enjoys the intricacies of the sport and never tires of finding ways to improve his game. “One thing that led to our success was a more complex team offense and defense,” Doyle said. “Our coaches spent countless hours studying films and creating an offense that was fluid and fast and focused on

the ‘unit’ rather than the individual shooter. Our defense wrecked havoc on teams by switching defensive sets and always keeping teams guessing.”

And Doyle was perhaps the hardest Falcon to contain. The team captain was at the top of opponents’ scouting reports. Doyle was an All-American, as well as being named first team All-CIF and North County Conference.

Yet this summer Doyle, who is committed to Cornell University, will not be resting on his lacrosse stick.

Instead, there is a full summer of lacrosse planned that will take Doyle across the country. “I’m looking forward to playing lacrosse on the East Coast this summer as well as locally when I return,” Doyle said. “This summer my main focus to improve will take place in the weight room, although I can never get enough shooting practice.”

All that practice in the offseason is to prepare Doyle for the rigors of the college game, which is remarkably different from county lacrosse. “It will be very difficult because of how much faster the game is at the college level. I am excited to finally attain my goal of playing collegiate lacrosse for a team that I have followed and loved since I was in the fifth grade.”

That’s Sean Doyle, all business, all the time.

Gibbs Sprints Way to Multiple CIF Titles

T here is a fine line between personal success and failure in track and field. El Camino’s Jasmine Gibbs teeters

on that tightrope better than just about anyone else.

“The best part of track and field is that it’s an individual sport so everything is on you. There is no blaming others about what you need to do to get better,” Gibbs said. “The worst part about track and field would be if

you’re in a running event you

get one

chance and only one, and if you mess up, there are no repeats.”

Gibbs didn’t waste any opportunities at the CIF-San Diego Section Division I Track and Field finals, leading the Wildcats with relative easy to the championship, outdis-tancing second-place Torrey Pines by 29 points (95-66). The junior won the 100 with a personal best time of 11.76 and followed that with a victory in the 200 (24.29) and another PR. Gibbs also ran a leg on the Wildcats’ winning 400 meter relay team and, for good measure, took second place in the long jump (18-7) behind teammate Mishe Scott.

“Actually my season was by far a huge success,” she said. “I peaked in the 100 and 200 right on time and drastically beat my PRs of last year. As for the long jump, I’m also where I’m supposed to be, but I have been

having difficulties with my approach.”And the reason for Gibbs’ accomplish-

ments this season can be attributed with a more rigorous training program and work ethic that is unmatched. “I was successful this season because I spent more time train-ing outside of the season and I was actually focused,” Gibbs said. “Overall, I would say that my dedication and love for track and field help me become better.”

With such a great junior campaign, Gibbs will have her choices of scholarships to choose from, but has narrowed the choices between the University of Miami and UCLA. The deciding factor will be the distance from home not the college environment. “I don’t think the transition will be hard because I am a very social person and I like new places and experience new things,” said Gibbs.

RB’s Pickering Sprints to Two CIF Titles

For someone who doesn’t run very far, Rancho Bernardo’s Jared Pickering needs a break every once in a while.

That’s because the senior runs fast, very fast, and not many people in the state could catch him this season.

Pickering was easily the class of San Diego County sprinters, earning victories in the 100 (10.50) and 200 (21.14) at the CIF Division I finals. Then, at the State Track and Field Finals in Clovis, Pickering held his own against some of the nation’s best, taking third in the 100 (10.50) and fifth in the 200 (21.13) to cap a memorable career for the Broncos.

At the prestigious Arcadia Invitational earlier this season, widely considered one of the best prep meets in the country, Pickering made his statement that he would be among the state’s best. Against a stacked field, he outdistanced his competition and won the

200, leaving him a bit bewildered. “That was my fondest memory of high school,” Pickering said of his Arcadia exploits. “I knew I would be racing the state champion and it was a surprise for me to actually win the race. I felt ecstatic and I used it as motivation to try and carry me to the State meet.”

A slight technical adjustment and a new attitude around the Rancho Bernardo pro-gram made all the difference in performance, according to Pickering. “I believe I was more successful this year because there was a more relaxed atmosphere,” he said. “An individual skill that helped me out this season was my block starts. Last year, I was always last out of the blocks, but now I get out just as good as everyone else.”

Pickering attracted a lot of media atten-tion, but he wanted to use it as an inspiration to others. “I want to be remembered as some-

one who loved competition and was never cocky about it,” he said. “While running at RB, I met lots of people I didn’t know and will likely never see again who complimented me on my running. I hope that exposure encourages kids somewhere to try and do the same things I did.”

Pham is All Aces for RB Tennis

For tyler pham, redemption was best served when he was holding the CIF individual tennis championship plaque.

That’s because the Rancho Bernardo junior avenged an earlier loss to Derrick Klein of Westview in the Palomar League tournament and came away with the title in a three-set grudge match victory.

Pham, who lost to Klein in the Palomar League semifinals, dropped the first set to his part-time doubles partner and came roar-ing back to score a 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 win in the finals. The title capped off a great season for Pham, who along with his Bronco teammates, earned their second consecutive CIF Division 1 team championship with a 16-2 thrash-

ing of Torrey Pines. “This season was nearly perfect. Our team achieved most of our goals we set at the beginning of the season,” Pham said. “Winning CIF was my goal before the season started.”

Rising to the top of high school tennis was a big step for Pham, who knows he will have to improve his game in many areas to suc-ceed at the college level. “I was successful this season because I worked much harder in the off-season,” Pham said. “I am in better shape than I have ever been. The best part of my game now is being able to control the point with my forehand. The transition to college tennis will be tough, as everything is just a little bit faster. If I continue to work hard

on my fitness and improve my serve, I don’t think I will have a problem.”

Pham will do all he can this summer to make the transition smoother. He will be traveling to Thousand Oaks to train with Scott Christie to prepare for the Clay Court Nationals in Florida. From there, Pham is hoping to make it to the Hardcourt Nationals in Kalamazoo, Mich.

For now, Pham treasures the memory of competing with his good friend in the CIF finals. “It was exciting to be able to com-pete with a friend in the finals,” Pham said. “Knowing that we both had respect for each other’s game and we were able to bring out the best in each other.”

Steady Play Leads to CIF Title for Falcon’s Xander

With one of the best junior golfers in the country breathing down his neck, Scripps Ranch’s

Xander Schauffele had every reason to fold up like a cheap beach chair at the CIF Individual Boys Golf Finals at the Coronado Municipal Golf Course.

However, on the back nine of the finals, Schauffele was steady down the stretch while La Jolla Country Day’s Anthony Paolucci, the defending county champion and Rolex Junior Golfer of the Year, made a critical triple-bogey on the 11th hole giving Schauffele (67-70-137) the one-shot lead that he preserved into the clubhouse.

“The best way to describe my season would be consistent,” Schauffele said. “My senior year at Scripps Ranch was by far the most steady golf I have played. I really put

in a lot of hours into my game compared to the past couple of years. Putting has been the main focus of my practice and it definitely paid off.”

And that hard work paid off for Schauffele, who won the Saints Invitational, the City Conference Stroke Play tourney and the county championship this spring. The senior credits an equipment change for his recent success. Schauffele switched to TaylorMade clubs, and his game seemed to take off from there.

Schauffele, who will be playing at Long Beach State, wants to take advantage of each and every opportunity once he hits campus. The 49ers’ home course, the Virginia Country Club, is home to seven PGA touring profes-sionals, who are all under the watchful eye of top instructor Jamie Mulligan. Add to that

Long Beach State Coach Ryan Ressa, a for-mer assistant at UCLA, Duke, and USD, and Schauffele can’t wait to get started.

“Other than doing my laundry, I don’t think the transition from high school to col-lege will be all too difficult,” he said. “The biggest issue will be time management, but I don’t know a single freshman in college who doesn’t struggle with that at first. Golf-wise, I’ll be practicing more and playing more, but I am totally ready to take that responsibility.”

If a positive attituDe were CurrenCy, then Mt. Carmel’s Ruby Harrison would never lose a game of Monopoly. The senior monopolized prep gymnastics this season as she and her teammates cashed in on their third consecutive CIF-San

Diego Section championship. If that wasn’t enough, Harrison didn’t leave any change, taking the optional all-around title.

“I was able to achieve the goals that I made not only for myself, but I was able to experience success with the rest of my teammates this season,” Harrison said. “I think it was a very memorable season that I will never forget. Our team has a very strong bond which helped us stay level-headed and confident.”

The rest of the Sundevils took their cue from Harrison, who won the all-around championship with a score of 37.400. In addition, Harrison took her third consecutive title in the uneven parallel bars (9.450). Besides the three-peat, it was Mt. Carmel’s 13th section title in school history.

While Harrison was clearly the best gymnast in the county, she is quick to credit her coach and teammates for vaulting her toward a successful season and career. “The one and only reason that I was successful this season is the support of my teammates and my coach, Monique Lamphiere Tamayoshi,” Harrison said. “They are the reason I joined the team in the first place and I owe everything to them. Words cannot describe how much they mean to me.”

Harrison realizes she won’t be able to rely on her Mt. Carmel teammates when she goes to Northern Arizona University with an eye on a nursing career. However, Harrison believes she is up to the challenges of college life. “I am looking forward to the chance to be independent and meet new people outside my city,” Harrison said. “The family atmosphere is something that I cannot wait to be a part of. Leaving all my friends and family will be hard, but it is a change that is important to experience. I will need to work on making new friends in a new state.”

Q. I’m a tennis player and my shoulder has been bugging me. I’m looking forward to surfing and climbing during the summer, but it hurts when I lift my arm over my head. Is there anything I can do?With any musculoskeletal injury the initial treatment is the same. Avoid activities that provoke pain. Ask your tennis coach to review your swing to make sure you’re not putting unnecessary stress on your shoulder or elbow joints. Ice your shoulder after physical activity, particularly if you’re feeling discomfort. Take a couple weeks off from tennis or overhead activities. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications can provide occasional or temporary relief. If that does not work and you are still having difficulty, then it’s time to see a sports medicine doctor.

Matt Meunier, MD, an orthopaedic sur-geon at UC San Diego who specializes in arm/shoulder injuries, says, “Depending on how the discomfort started there may be some practical concerns. If there was a fall or other trauma it’s possible there is a fracture. Overhead athletes are also at risk for tears of the labrum (effectively a gasket that supports the ball and socket joint of the shoulder) or injury to the rotator cuff.”

A visit to a sports medicine physician can help you figure out what’s going on. Many times a simple course of physical therapy will correct the problem. Sometimes there may be a more serious issue requiring surgery. The sooner you get started on a treatment plan, the sooner you’ll be back out on the court and pain-free!

Q. I play soccer and put sunscreen on my face and body. But it ends up getting in my eyes and stinging so I don’t wear it any more. Do you have any ideas?

You’re smart to think about sunscreen, espe-cially in a place like Southern California where active lifestyles mean lots of sun exposure. While we love our sunshine, unprotected skin looks older faster -with

more wrinkles, spots and sagging. Not to mention a greater risk of skin cancer.

To avoid eye stinging, try products made specifically for the face or sensitive skin. Physical sunblocks such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide don’t sting the eyes like chemical sunscreens such as avobenzone or oxybenzone. Look for a broad spectrum sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. Mineral powders that are rated SPF 30 also provide a non-stinging physical sunblock that can be applied over make-up to ensure continuous coverage.

Apply a generous amount of sun pro-tection 15-30 minutes before practice or games. (Most people apply less than half the amount needed for adequate sun protection.) Re-apply every 2 hours when you’re out in the sun. If you sweat a lot, a headband can absorb sweat and sunscreen instead of letting it roll into your eyes. And while you’re on the sidelines, a broad-brimmed hat will provide extra protection for your skin and neck.

To see how well you’re protecting your skin, take the Suntelligence Survey as part of the Play Sun Smart program developed by the American Academy of Dermatology with Major League Baseball. Go to playsmartsun.org. Lotion up and get out there!

Q. I’ve been getting out of breath easily during running and also feel some tightness in my chest. I just saw my doctor who diagnosed me with exercise-induced asthma. What does that mean and what can I do about it so that it doesn’t interfere with my ability to play sports?

Exercise induced asthma (EIA - also known as exercise induced bronchospasm, EIB) can be seen in young athletes. This is when the airways in the lung (the bronchi) become hypersensitive to certain triggers in the air and constrict, or spasm, during exercise activity. Exercise-induced asthma can lead to shortness of breath, chest tightness, wheezing, and/or coughing related to intense or prolonged exer-cise activity. Usually the symptoms get better when the exercise activity is stopped, but they may linger for hours or days. Many people have asthma that is not specifically related to exercise, whereas exercise-induced asthma mainly occurs with exercise. It can be exacer-bated by cold temperature, dry air, allergies, as well as upper respiratory infections (having the “cold” or “flu”).

Natalie Voskanian, MD, sports medicine doctor at UC San Diego recommends check-ing with your doctor. “If your doctor believes that you have EIA, he/she will prescribe you an inhaler known as a bronchodilator which

will open up your airways within minutes of having symptoms. If you know you have EIA then it’s usually recommended that you prevent the episode from happening by using the inhaler about 30 minutes prior to exercise activity. The medication can last up to 4-6 hours. Sometimes one puff might be enough; sometimes an additional puff may be nec-essary.” Individuals who have long-term asthma symptoms outside of exercise activ-ity will usually be started on a longer acting inhaler with corticosteroid in it to reduce inflammation in the airways.

“There are various reasons why an inhaler may stop working for an athlete with EIA - the medication in the inhaler tube may have run out and you need to open up a new one, it’s expired, or you aren’t using it right. The correct way to use an inhaler is to inhale it into the lungs, not into the back of the mouth. A device known as an aerochamber can be used to allow the medication to go in slowly, making it more likely to go into the lungs than the mouth (this device can be pre-scribed by your doctor).”

Be smart and don’t play if your symptoms are acting up and see your doctor if your symptoms are getting worse. In severe cases, individuals may need to be hospitalized or treated in the emergency room because it can become life-threatening if not treated appropriately.
