Who was Albert lea?Though he never resided in the area, Albert Lea was instrumental in the early exploration of southern Minnesota. A civil engineer, farmer, professor, early supporter of women’s rights, glass manufacturer, Confederate soldier, bookstore owner and founder of an Episcopal church, he lived a long and varied life. As a lieutenant with the First United States Dragoons, Albert Miller Lea served as surveyor and map maker. In July, 1835, he camped with an expedition about 5 miles from Albert Lea Lake, which he originally named Fox Lake. The lieutenant wrote of the area, “We soon got into a region of lakes and open groves of oaks, beautiful as English parks.” Later, the lake’s name was changed in his honor. The first settlers arrived in 1855, and the city became the “Village of Lake Albert Lea.” In June, 1879, Lea was invited to the 5th annual meeting of the Old Settler’s Association of Albert Lea, where he was pleased to see how the settlement in this beautiful area had thrived.
