2010-11 ROUND UP • For the second time in three seasons, UCF claimed a Conference USA Championship by defeating UAB, Memphis and Tulane.• Eight-straight wins to end the regular season helped the Knights earn No. 2 seed in the conference tournament, their highest finish since joining the league in 2005.• The 11-game win streak was the longest streak in 27 years (1984) for the program, while the 22 wins in 2010-11 also marked the first time since 1984 that UCF reached the 20-plus-win mark.

HOW THEY’RE MADE UP• With the loss of five seniors from last season’s team, the 2011-12 Knights will boast three seniors, two juniors, four sophomores and four freshmen as they look to pursue another conference championship.• Aisha Patrick, Ashia Kelly and Racine Davis make up this year’s senior class. Patrick and Kelly are the only two returning starters from a year ago, while Davis is one of the team’s top reserves off the bench.• Gevenia Carter and Kayli Keough are the only juniors on the team, but are a talented duo who will add depth at guard and forward, respectively.• After a memorable first season in UCF uniforms, the sophomore class of Sarah Green, Erika Jones, Aarika Judge and Leo Montalvo will be back with both NCAA Tournament and C-USA Championship experience.• Head coach Joi Williams has assembled another talented incoming class as Meghan Keough, Bryeasha Blair, Andrea Hines and Stephanie Taylor will make their UCF debut in 2011-12.

FINAL SEASON• Senior Aisha Patrick returns for her senior season as one of the premier players in C-USA. As a junior, she became the first UCF player to earn C-USA All-Defensive Team honors and was a vital piece of the team’s championship run.• Patrick recorded 82 steals as a junior, the third-highest single-season total in program history. • With a team that boasts several talented forwards, it is not often that you see a guard lead the team in rebounds. But that is just what Patrick did in 2010-11, pulling down a team-best 8.1 boards per game. Her 596 career rebounds rank eighth all-time at UCF.

KELLY STEPS UP• Senior Ashia Kelly began the 2010-11 season as a role player, doing all the little things to help the team be successful. But as the Knights began to roll late in the year, Kelly was one of the main contributors, recording all five of her double-digit scoring performances in the team’s final eight games, including a team-high 16 points against Ohio State in the NCAA Tournament.• As a junior, Kelly was 34-of-80 from beyond the arc. Her .388 career three-point shooting percentage ranks first all-time in program history among players with at least 75 attempts.• With the loss of nearly two-thirds of the scoring from a year ago, Kelly’s scoring down the stretch is a good sign for 2011-12 as she will step into a larger scoring role in her final season at UCF.

PAT’S RECORD WATCH• A season after two players reached the 1,000-point milestone, this season’s team will likely see another Knight reach that mark as Patrick is just 168 points shy.• Patrick also sits on the cusp of several other career milestones as she is just 11 assists away from 300 in her career, while her 596 career rebounds ranks eighth in program history. By season’s end, the senior could rank third all-time in both categories.• After 82 steals a year ago, Patrick sits 63 back of Chariya Davis ’99 all-time program lead in the category with 284, a figure she has proven to be able to meet.

UP FRONT• Associate head coach Greg Brown will have a talented core of post players to mold this season as he has five 6-footers to work with.• After sustaining an injury early in February that cut her season short, Sarah Green will once again pair with fellow sophomore Erika Jones to make up a force in the low post along with senior leader Racine Davis. • Two new players will make their debuts up front for the Knights this year as junior Kayli Keough will finally see action after sitting out all of 2010-11 after transferring from Florida State and freshman Stephanie Taylor enters the mix.

SIDELINE PRESENCE• Head Coach Joi Williams is now in her fifth season at UCF and ninth season overall as head collegiate basketball coach. On Sept. 22, she signed a five-year contract extension that will keep her as the Knights’ head coach through at least the 2015-16 season.• Bob Starkey joined the Knights’ staff this spring after more than two decades with the LSU basketball programs. He served as the interim head coach in 2007, leading the Lady Tigers to their fourth of five straight Final Four appearances.

With more than 20 years of overall coaching experience under her belt, Joi Williams will enter her fifth season as the head coach at UCF and ninth season as a head coach in 2011-12. In her four seasons building up the UCF program, Williams has already compiled an impressive list of accomplishments, including leading the Knights to the 2009 and 2011 NCAA Tournaments after her teams claimed Conference USA Championships in those seasons.

Williams has also recently represented both UCF and her country by working with USA Basketball. In the summer of 2010, Williams served as an assistant coach of the USA Basketball Women’s U-18 National Team and helped lead the squad to the gold medal at the FIBA Americas U-18 Championship for Women.

She reprised that role with USA Basketball in the summer of 2011 as an assistant coach with the national team at the U-19 World Championship team in Chile. Williams and the U.S. defeated Spain to once again take home the gold medal for the second straight summer.

This past year, Williams helped the Knights to their most successful season in nearly three decades. She led UCF to a 22-11 record and claimed the program’s second C-USA title with a 12-point win over defending champion Tulane in the final. The conference championship secured the Knights a spot in the 2011 NCAA Tournament; the fourth appearance in school history.

Williams guided the Knights to the 2011 C-USA crown on the strength of an 11-game winning streak. UCF closed out the season on an eight-game run that was followed by three straight wins in the conference tourney to claim the championship. The 11-game streak and the 20-plus win season were the first by the program in 27 seasons.

In 2008-09, the Knights were picked to finish last in C-USA before posting 11 conference wins and tying for second place. The Knights’ 11 league wins in 2008-09 matched the program’s total in its first three seasons in C-USA combined, and Williams’ peers took notice by voting her the 2009 C-USA Coach of the Year. Also in 2008-09, UCF players won the C-USA Player of the Week award a league-high five times.

The season became more memorable in the postseason when the Knights won four games in four days to capture the C-USA Tournament Championship and the program’s first NCAA Tournament berth since 1999. The Knights finished the season at 17-17 after a hard-fought 85-80 loss to third-seeded North Carolina in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

In her first season at UCF in 2007-08, with freshmen playing a nation-high 91 percent of the minutes, Williams led UCF to its first 10-win season in three years.

Williams came to UCF after four seasons as the head coach at Murray State (2003-04 to 2006-07), where she helped the Racers to a WNIT berth and the program’s first 20-win season in 18 years. The Racers had a 54-61 overall record in her time rebuilding Murray State.

In her final campaign with the Racers in 2006-07, Williams led Murray State to a 21-10 mark and a trip to the WNIT. The WNIT berth marked only the second postseason appearance in Murray State history. The Racers also advanced to the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) Championship title game. Murray State finished the campaign among the national leaders in several statistical categories, including free-throw percentage, field-goal percentage and scoring offense.

Williams spent the 2002-03 season as the recruiting coordinator at Clemson University.

Prior to Clemson, Williams was the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Florida for 12 seasons (1990-91 to 2001-02). During her tenure, the Lady Gators participated in nine NCAA Tournament and tallied a 247-121 overall record (.671 winning percentage).

Williams helped attract five All-America selections to Florida, and nine standouts who were recruited by and played under Williams were selected in the WNBA Draft. The list of WNBA draftees includes DeLisha Milton-Jones, who was the 1997 Southeastern Conference Player of the Year, the first UF player ever selected to the Kodak All-America First Team and a member of the gold-medal winning 2000 and 2008 U.S. Olympic basketball teams. Milton-Jones also earned gold medals with the 1998 and 2002 USA World Championship teams.

Born and raised in Jacksonville, Williams played on the collegiate level at the University of South Florida from 1984-88. She was a four-year starting point guard and currently ranks among USF’s career assist leaders. She earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing from USF in 1988.

Greg Brown joined the UCF women’s basketball staff as an assistant coach in April 2007 and was elevated to associate head coach in June 2009. He will be entering his fifth season on Joi Williams’ staff in 2011-12.

In 2008-09, Brown was a key member of the staff as UCF went 11-5 in Conference USA play and won the C-USA tournament title. His work with scouting and game preparation helped the Knights win four games in four days to win the title.

Brown and the Knights enjoyed continued success in 2011, winning the C-USA Championship for the second time in three seasons. UCF used an 11-game winning streak through the final eight regular season games and all three conference tournament contests to capture the league title and secure its second NCAA Tournament berth.

Following the season, Brown was selected to speak at the Assistant Basketball Coaches Symposium, A Step Up: Chicago 2011. Brown spoke about scouting and gameplan development at the convention, which is designed as a career and professional development opportunity for women’s basketball assistant coaches.

Brown’s primary responsibilities include coaching the post players, coordinating scouting and assisting in game preparation and scheduling. In addition, he also serves as the co-director of Joi Williams Basketball Camps.

Prior to coming to UCF, Brown worked in Nashville, Tenn., where he served as head girls’ basketball coach at Goodpasture Christian School.

Brown also found success as the head girl’s basketball coach at Friendship Christian School in Lebanon, Tenn., as he guided the school to three district championships, a regional championship and a sub-state title. He earned two District 8A Coach of the Year awards.

He began his coaching career as a student assistant coach under Don Meyer at his alma mater, Lipscomb.

He then worked with Pat Summitt at Tennessee for two years, first serving as a graduate assistant in 2002-03 before being elevated to assistant coach in 2003-04. During that time, the Lady Vols had a record of 64-9, earned two Southeastern Conference championships and were twice the runner-up at the NCAA Championship.

He also coached the post players at Tennessee, working with several current WNBA players, including 2004 Kodak All-America selection Shyra Ely.

A student of the game, Brown has published an article in American Basketball Quarterly on developing low post players at Tennessee and publishes a blog titled: “UCF Women’s Basketball Thoughts”.

In addition, Brown has been active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for many years, serving as guest speaker at numerous FCA and community events.

Brown has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Lipscomb. He and his wife, Teresa, have two sons, Cole and Carter.

A long-time presence in college basketball, Bob Starkey joins the UCF coaching staff for the 2011-12 season. Starkey moved to Orlando after 13 seasons with the LSU women’s basketball program and 22 seasons involved with LSU basketball.

“I’m extremely honored about joining the UCF family,” Starkey said. “I’ve known Coach Williams for over a decade and while her success speaks for itself, it is the core values of her philosophy that has me excited about being a part of her program.”

Considered one of the top minds in all of college basketball, Starkey served as the associate head coach for the Lady Tigers under Van Chancellor since 2007.

Prior to Chancellor’s arrival in Baton Rouge, Starkey took on the responsibility as the acting head coach at the end of the 2006-07 campaign. Heading into postseason play, Starkey led LSU to its fourth straight Final Four appearance, defeating UNC Asheville, West Virginia, Florida State and No. 1 seed UConn to reach the National Semifinals in Cleveland.

Part of all five Final Fourth berths, three SEC regular season titles and a conference tournament championship at LSU, Starkey spent 13 seasons in total along the Lady Tigers’ sidelines beginning in 1998. Before joining Sue Gunter’s staff, Starkey spent two seasons working in an administrative position with both the men’s and women’s programs.

In his first role at LSU, Starkey served as an assistant with the men’s team from 1990-96. During his time with the Tigers, he worked closely in developing post players such as Shaquille O’Neal, Stanley Roberts and Geert Hammink, all first-round picks in the NBA draft.

Coach Starkey continued to work with post players after joining the LSU women’s program. He was very influential in the development of Sylvia Fowles (Chicago Sky), the second overall pick in the 2008 WNBA Draft. He also coached other WNBA first round picks including Seimone Augustus (Minnesota Lynx), Temeka Johnson (Phoenix Mercury), Marie Ferdinand (Phoenix Mercury) and Scholanda Robinson (San Antonio Silver Stars).

Before his extended stint at LSU, Starkey spent one year as an assistant at Marshall during the 1988-89 season and three seasons at West Virginia State from 1984-87. In his final season at West Virginia State, he helped guide the Yellow Jackets to NAIA National Championship Game.

Starkey is originally from Charleston, W.Va., and is married to the former Sherie Hayslett, a native of Winfield, W.Va.

What was your first job?

In high school I worked at Fred’s. It was like a local dollar store. I remember the day I got my first paycheck. I was so excited. I think I spent it on gas and food. I told my parents that I wanted to be self-sufficient.

What are you most afraid of?

I am extremely terrified of heights. The first time I flew on a plane was with my mom on my first and only visit to UCF. I’ve adapted to endure the ride, but if I tried to go sky diving or something, I’d still be terrified.

What is something you want to do before you die?

I’d like to travel. There are plenty of places I want to go, but I’d really like to travel to Spain and blend with the culture.

What is your first basketball memory?

I played at this local league back in my hometown and I was about six years old. I remember playing against one of my best friends, and the game came down to the wire. I remember making the basket and my dad came out running and grabbed me and twirled me in the air.

After having to sit last year due to NCAA transfer rules, how do

you think you can help the team this year?

By playing hard, cutting hard, looking for my shot and putting in an all-out effort -- hopefully it will be contagious.

Where is your favorite place?

By far my favorite place is the beach. Put me anywhere with an ocean or a lake, a reef, fishing, a sand bar, and I’m totally content. I love being out in the sun or outdoors in any way I can. What’s the best present you’ve ever received?

That’s a tough one. I get really excited over the littlest things so I go mildly crazy on Christmas. One year, my parents got us a trampoline and that was probably one of my favorite things to do when I was a kid. How many games of one-on-one have you and Meghan played,

and who usually wins?

We played a lot when we were younger, out in the front driveway. Way too many to count. When we were younger I was a lot taller and had a big advantage but now it’s a toss up.

Your brother plays football at conference rival Southern Miss.

Does your family have a house-divided thing going on?

We play different sports so when I play they cheer for me, and when he plays they cheer for him. When UCF plays Southern Miss, I cheer for my brother but I still want UCF to win.

You’ve been known to break out in song. How does singing

make you feel?

It makes me feel good when I’m entertaining everybody. I like to make everyone laugh. And I like music.

What was your first car?

I’ve never had a car.

What instrument do you wish you could play?

I’d like to learn to play the guitar really well. I have a guitar but I don’t know how to play it. I got it as a gift.

How strong do you think this year’s frontcourt can be?

We can be really strong. We have six post players so I think we have a lot of potential. We have to put in a lot of hard work but I think we’ll be pretty good.

Rumor has it you are a Lord of the Rings and Star Wars fan. What

do you like about those movies?

“I’ve grown up watching Star Wars because my family is really big into Star Wars. I really love Sci-Fi. I also like war movies, and Lord of the Rings is a war movie. Both of them are just the typical good vs. evil stories.”

Have you ever dressed up to go see one of the films in movie

theaters?

“I haven’t dressed up - I’m not that big of a fanatic. But for Halloween when I was 10 years old I was Frodo. I’m guilty of that.”

You go by Leo but your full name is Leonella. Are you named

after anyone?

“My great-grandmother on my dad’s side had passed away a week before I was born. Her name was Leonor. They wanted to name me Leonor but my mom hated it so she changed the ending. So that’s how my name came to be.”

What is your dream job?

You went to the same high school as men’s basketball guards

Marcus Jordan and A.J. Rompza in Chicago. Are you close?

Once they found out I was going here, they gave me some pointers on how UCF was. They kind of influenced my decision. We do see each other a lot in the gym.

What are your thoughts on Chicago pizza?

Chicago has the best pizza, hands down. My perfect pizza would be when the bread is flat and the crust is thick and has cheese on the inside. And sausage topping.

What TV show can you not stop watching?

Phineas and Ferb.

If a genie gave you three wishes, what would you wish for?

1. Unlimited Sour Patch Watermelon flavored candy.2. Super powers: the ability to fly and be invisible. 3. To come out with my own shoe and it be as popular as Michael Jordan shoes.

What drew you to UCF?

The coaches and the academics. I’m a health science major and I eventually want to become a nurse.

You’re from Philadelphia. Have you ever run up the famous

Rocky steps? And what do you think of the movie?

We had a field trip there when I was going to school in Pennsylvania. We got a chance to walk up the steps and see the statue. His work ethic shows Philly. We work hard.

Do you know any foreign languages?

I can speak French a little. I have a friend from France so I try to pick up on it from her. I can understand it better than I can speak it. She was a foreign exchange student at my school in Delaware. She’s like my best friend now.

You played lacrosse for a year in high school. Can you use any

of your lacrosse moves on the court?

Footwork. In lacrosse, you use a lot of jab steps and sliding.

What can you tell us about your sister Kayli that others

wouldn’t know?

Kayli has the biggest sweet-tooth. We have girls on the team that will hide pieces of chocolate in her room, playing pranks on her.

When did you first learn to wakeboard and waterski?

My family lives on a lake and my dad taught us to knee board when we were four years old. That was the age that he wanted us to start learning. We water skied as we grew up, but I got into wakeboarding two summers ago. Some of my friends would do it. We have a ski boat now so every time I go home, I do it. It’s so fun.

You made history by being a part of two consecutive

championship teams at Tampa Catholic. What was it like to be

a part of something that big?

I had the most amazing high school basketball experience I could ever ask for. I think that has helped me a lot transitioning because I’ve been on a winning team. Coming in I have the same passion and desire to win. It’s nice when you’ve been there and tasted it – it makes you more hungry.

You’re from North Carolina, and they take basketball pretty

seriously there. Are you a Duke or North Carolina fan?

I’m not really a fan of either. I was that outcast that said they didn’t care who won and everyone would get mad at me.

What was your first day on campus like?

My first day on campus was so fun and so confusing at the same time, especially the first day of class. The campus is so big and it is easy to get lost by the beauty of it.

What do you like most about being tall? What do you like the

least?

I love my height mainly because that’s how I was meant to be and both my parents are tall. It feels good when I catch people’s attention and they go, “Wow, you’re really tall...I wish I was tall.” But I hate that being tall usually means you have big feet and can never find shoes your size or long enough jeans or pants.

What has surprised you the most about the transition to college

basketball?

I knew I was going to be put to work, so I was expecting it, but it’s still pretty tough. Also you need to really have great time management.

UCF BASKETBALL PRACTICE FACILITYNot only do the Knights utilize one of the nation’s finest home venues in the UCF Arena, members of the team also have access to the UCF Basketball Practice Facility. The venue opened in spring 2008 and includes a practice court for the Knights.

UCF student-athletes have access to the facility 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The facility connects to the UCF Arena. The practice court contains six baskets, two shot clocks and a scoreboard. The Knights use the court for individual development and as a location for pickup games.

The facility is equipped with a video system that allows the UCF coaching staff to tape every practice and workout. The coaches then visit with each student-athlete to analyze their performance. Offices and conference rooms for the UCF coaching staff are located on the second floor of the practice facility. A film room is adjacent to the offices. The practice facility was constructed during the 2007-08 campaign inside the former home of the Knights - the old UCF Arena. UCF played at the facility from 1991-07.

A 2,000-square foot weight room is located on the first floor of the facility. The weight room provides the Knights with access to free weight and machine equipment, cardio and treadmills. UCF’s basketball teams are the only programs that use the weight room. The Knights utilize a large sports medicine center located inside the practice facility. The sports medicine center connects to the team’s locker room. Additionally, the center is adjacent to the UCF Arena for the Knights to use before and after games.

Inside the UCF Practice Facility, the Knights utilize a new locker room, which also connects to the UCF Arena, and a spacious player lounge. Both rooms are used exclusively by the women’s basketball program. The room features tables and chairs, televisions and couches for the players.
