ROB OLIVERPRESIDENT

When the board of trustees announced its decision to hire Robert C. Oliver as Augustana's 23rd president, the campus and Sioux Falls com-munities' response was predictably and overwhelmingly positive. Oliver was no stranger to either community, and his leadership and passionfor life and learning are hallmarks of his career.

Born in Dayton, Ohio, Oliver attended public schools and entered the University of South Dakota in 1971. He obtained a bachelor’s in eco-nomics in 1975 and, while employed by Norwest Bank in Rapid City, began coursework to receive his master’s of business administration in1977.

As Norwest Bank completed its transition to becoming Wells Fargo & Co., Oliver continued his progression through a variety of positionswith the firm. He has experience as a personal banker and commercial banker and became manager of the business banking department inSioux Falls. In 1987, Oliver was named president of the Sioux Falls market banks. He expanded the operations of the then Norwest Bankfranchise in Sioux Falls to include 16 locations. In 1999, he was named southeast district president, responsible for 27 banking locations in 13communities in southeast South Dakota and southwest Minnesota.

Oliver’s "free time" during his years at the bank included coursework at The Stonier Graduate School of Banking. He taught classes for the USD School of Business, both inthe undergraduate and MBA programs in Sioux Falls. He also taught for the American Institute of Banking and the Institute for Financial Education.

Believing that service to one's community is as important as one's career, Oliver became well-known throughout the area as a model board member and volunteer. His area in-volvement has included the Avera McKennan Hospital Board of Trustees (chair), Augustana Board of Regents (former chair), Board of Directors of Avera Heart Hospital ofSouth Dakota (member), Communication Services for the Deaf (board member), Sioux Empire United Way Board (former chair) and Volunteers of America (board member).Additionally, Oliver has served Forward Sioux Falls, Sioux Falls Development Foundation, Main Street Sioux Falls, YMCA, Threshold Youth Services, the Civic Fine Arts Centerand Sioux Empire Red Cross. He is a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.

Oliver retired from banking in 2004 and joined the Augustana faculty as an associate professor and chair of the department of business administration. While his tenure withinthe department was brief, his dedication to students and excellence in the classroom were soon well-known.

Oliver and his wife, Angela, are the parents of two daughters, Laura Oliver and Andrea Cammilleri.

BILL GROSSDIRECTOROFATHLETICS

Augustana’s athletic department has flourished under the direction of Bill Gross.

From facilities to execution on the playing field, Augustana has gained national recognition under Gross’ guidance. The Vikings began com-petition in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in 2008 and in just three seasons claimed the U.S. Bank/NSIC All-Sports Champi-onship. This award recognizes the NSIC program with the most success each year.

Augustana won 20 games in 2010-11, reaching the magic number for the seventhstraight season.

Yet, in some ways it was a disappointing run for Coach Dave Krauth’s Vikings.

High preseason expectations were supported by a veteran team loaded with fire-power. But before the first tipoff, a knee injury put redshirt freshman forwardRhianna Gullickson (Alexandria, S.D.) on the sidelines for the season. GuardFaith Tinklenberg (Pipestone, Minn.), who started all 31 games in 2009-10 as asophomore, was lost for the season three games into the schedule.

This year’s team will be built around senior guardMolly Hayes (Harrisburg, S.D.)and junior forward Alex Feeney (Bismarck, N.D.). Both started all 30 games lastyear and Hayes was selected to the All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conferencesecond team. Feeney was chosen NSIC Freshman of the Year for 2009-10.

Last season Hayes averaged 14.3 points and 3.1 rebounds a game. She shot 52.2percent from the field, led the team in assists (155) and was second in steals (59).Feeney averaged 13.4 points a game and led the team in rebounds (5.9). She shot52.3 percent from the floor and had a team-leading 35 blocked shots.

A priority for Krauth and his staff is replacing three starters and the top reserve.Last season guards Megan Doyle and Tessa Wilka, forward Kristi Board, and re-serve forward Liz Helsper combined for 35 points a game. Twice in her careerDoyle was chosen to the NSIC first team and last year was the Vikings’ leadingscorer 11 times.

Junior forward Lydia Nelson (Lake Preston, S.D.) started two games last year andplayed in all 30. She averaged 7.4 points and 2.9 rebounds a game.

Tinklenberg averaged 5.3 points and 5.3 rebounds in her three starts.Sophomore guardEmily Schulte (Sioux Falls), junior guard Cami Koehn (Egan,S.D.) and sophomore forward Katie Meister (Sioux Falls) all have game experi-ence.

Freshman centers Emily Bose and Andrea Whitney, and freshman guardShaunteva Ashley (Sioux Falls Roosevelt) were redshirted last season.

The 2011 recruiting class includes guards Sophie Kenney (Fargo, N.D.) and AlexKneeland (Summit, S.D.), and forwardNicole Kerkhoff (Morgan, Minn).

Krauth begins his 23rd season as head coach. His all-time record as Augustana’swinningest coach is 441-202.

32 >> AUGUSTANAVIKINGS

From its modest origin as a six-team alliance nearly eight decades ago, the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference has matured into a 14-team union of upper Midwest collegesand universities to form arguably the strongest affiliation in NCAA Division II.

The NSIC can trace its roots to 1932 when six schools, including Bemidji State, Minnesota State, MSUMoorhead, St. Cloud State , Minnesota Duluth and Winona State signedon as charter members. All remain active subscribers of the league today.

Southwest Minnesota State was added in 1969, followed by Northern State in 1978, Wayne State in 1998, Concordia and Minnesota, Crookston in 1999, the U-Mary and UpperIowa in 2006, and Augustana in 2008.

MSU, SCSU and UMD later left the league to join the North Central Conference but returned to the NSIC in 2008. Minnesota-Morris and Michigan Tech were once part ofthe NSIC family as well. In July 2012, the NSIC will again expand with the addition of Minot State and the Sioux Falls, bringing the league to 16 members for the 2012-13academic season.

In 1992, the NSIC became a true athletic showcase for both men and women with the merger of the traditional Northern Intercollegiate Conference (NIC) and the NorthernSun Conference (NSC), the home of women’s athletics since 1979.

Before NSIC affiliates became certified for championship competition in the National Collegiate Athletic Association in 1995, its member institutions filled prominent rolesin the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). NIC and NSC clubs annually dispatched qualified student-athletes to national tournaments and capturedseveral NAIA teams and individual championships.

The NSIC celebrates its 80th season this year and clearly continues to make a major imprint nationally, winning nine national titles in the last six years. The WSU men claimedNCAA II Basketball Championships in 2006 and 2008 and narrowly missed a third crown, falling in a last second shot in 2007. In addition, the Warriors established a NCAAII record of 57 consecutive victories.

CU launched an ongoing streak of four consecutive NCAA II Volleyball Championships in 2007. In 2008, the Golden Bears won 37 straight matches after a season openingloss on their way to a second consecutive title and scripted a marvelous encore in 2009 with a perfect 37-0 finish, a third straight national crown and a winning streak of 74straight matches. In 2010, the Golden Bear extendeds that win streak to 75 before dropping their second match of the season. They started 2010 with a 10-4 record beforeripping off 22 straight wins on their way to their fourth straight national title.

In a most surprising run, UMD completed a perfect 15-0 season by winning the 2008 NCAADivision II Football Championship. The Bulldogs, limited to only 24 scholarshipsby league rule, swept a field of fully-funded teams, including top ranked Grand Valley State and No. 3 Northwest Missouri State. Two years later in 2010, the Bulldogsrepeated that feat, going 15-0 again to win the national championship. The Bulldogs became the first NCAA DII football squad to win two national championships with un-defeated records.

MSU added more luster to the league by finishing 32-2 and claiming the 2008-09 NCAA II Women’s Basketball Championship. The Mavericks rolled to a wild 103-94 victoryover Franklin Pierce to set a NCAA record for total points in the title game.

Since 2000, the NSIC has also participated in the Mineral Water Bowl. Hosted by the Quarterback Club of Excelsior Springs, Mo., the Mineral Water Bowl matches the high-est-finishing teams from the NSIC and the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) not selected for the NCAADivision II football playoffs. WSU defeatedMissouri Western State 43-41 in triple overtime, the Warriors first-ever postseason win since 2000.

In addition, NSIC student-athletes have made a major splash nationally as well, collecting a batch of individual titles. CU setter Maggie McNamara was honored as the NCAADivision II Honda Women’s Athlete of the Year, the latest NSIC representative decorated with national Player of the Year honors.

The NSIC has also had three athletes awarded the NCAA Elite 88 Award, which is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participatingat the finals site for each of the NCAA’s 88 championships. Earning the award were Kendra Huettl (MSU, Softball, 2011), Matt Braithwaite (Augustana, Cross Country, 2010)and Lauren Brown (WSU, Outdoor Track and Field, 2010).

Member schools continue to emphasize the educational, entertainment and unifying value of sports while pointing with pride to the many advantages to be gained by attendingthese colleges and universities. The NSIC is committed to providing rewarding experiences for its student-athletes, and while the challenges that loom are sizable, indeed, theNSIC is surely well positioned for the future.
