DID YOU KNOW? UCLA leads the nation with 108 NCAA team championships. The women’s volleyball team secured title No. 108 in December 2011, defeating Illinois in four sets. UCLA became the first intercollegiate athletics department to have won 100 NCAA team titles in May 2007 when the women’s water polo team won its third consecutive NCAA Championship.

PAULEY PAVILION RENOVATIONAs shown in the photo above, UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion has undergone a nearly two-year long renovation. The men’s and women’s basketball teams, men’s and women’s volleyball teams and gymnastics program vacated the Bruins’ iconic arena during the 2011-12 school year. The building is slated to open the UCLA’s season opener in men’s basketball on Friday, Nov. 9, 2012, when the Bruins take on Indiana State at 8 p.m. The renovated arena will feature nearly 1,000 additional seats, in addition to numerous increases in venue amenities, high definition video boards, additional points of sale for concessions, and student-athlete film, video and locker rooms.

22011-12 UCLA Intercollegiate Athletics Annual Report

Dear Bruins:

Welcome to the 2011-12 UCLA Athletics Annual Report. With our past athletic and academic year complete, I wanted to thank the Bruin Family for its support not only in this year, but in years past as well.

Without the generosity displayed by each of you, whether it is in sacrificing your time to attend sporting events or donating to the Wooden Athletic Fund, or both, our athletic program would not be able to enjoy such success while continuing to compete for and win national championships. I know I speak for each of our coaches, student-athletes and staff members when I say your efforts are greatly appreciated.

During the 2011-12 school year, we took home our nation-leading 108th NCAA Championship when the women’s volleyball team stormed through the tournament, culminating with a scintillating four-set defeat of Illinois in the national championship match at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

We also had several teams finish just shy of a national title, including a pair of teams that finished second nationally (men’s water polo and women’s tennis) and four third-place finishers (men’s soccer, gymnastics, men’s tennis and women’s water polo). Two teams finished fifth nationally (men’s golf, baseball), giving UCLA a total of nine teams that ended their seasons among the top five, one of the best such displays in the country.

Moreover, two teams finished eighth at their NCAA Championships – women’s golf and rowing, the latter of which posted its best placement since we reinstated the program. Three Bruin teams were 17th in the final NCAA standings – women’s soccer, softball and men’s track and field – while the women’s track team ended its season just outside the top 20, in 21st place, at the national meet.

fROM THE A.D.’s DEsK

All told, UCLA finished in third place in the 2011-12 Learfield Sports Directors Cup standings. UCLA is one of just two schools to place among the top six in the final standings at least 17 times in the 19-year history of the Directors Cup. We have finished second seven times, most recently in 2007-08, and third six times.

In addition, our women’s teams placed second in the Capital One Cup standings, while our men’s teams finished third, giving UCLA the distinction of being the only school to finish in the top three for both its men’s and women’s programs.

Yes, it was a very good year, but we will not rest on our laurels next year and will continue to push for the top spot in each sport during the 2012-13 school year.

There were also several individual performances that stood out throughout the year. In fact, nearly 50 of our student-athletes earned All-America honors in their sport. Meanwhile, balancing athletics and academics certainly remains a priority at UCLA, and a multitude of others were named to Academic All-American teams, and more than 200 of them achieved Director’s Honor Roll plaudits each quarter.

The 2011-12 school year also proved to be a unique one for each of our teams that call Pauley Pavilion home. As the $136 million construction project charged forward on budget and on time, each of the teams that played there found a new, temporary home.

Most relocated to the Wooden Center; however the men’s basketball team embarked on an ambitious “Bruin Road Show” that took them to a variety of venues throughout the Southland, giving many of you the chance to see them “in your backyard” for the first time.

Despite the challenges that the renovation posed for teams and fans alike, it will all be worth it when we return to play in New Pauley during the 2012-13 school year.

New Pauley is not the only noticeable change in Westwood this fall. The football program is now under the direction of head coach Jim Mora and his staff, and the men’s volleyball team is led by John Speraw, as he replaced the legendary Al Scates, who retired after 50 years and 19 NCAA titles.

Coach Mora’s team was the beneficiary of upgrades at Spaulding Field. We secured a bid to replace the turf and grass surfaces and did just that prior to the football team’s preseason camp in August.

Meanwhile, the more than $150 million renovation project at the Rose Bowl continues, with tunnels widened and the partial reconstruction of the pavilion area (formerly the press box) completed for this season.

In closing, thank you again for your continued support of the program. I sincerely hope to see you at all of our venues, both the new ones and the existing ones, supporting student-athletes across our great program.

We are here to make sure that each of the young men and women who put on the uniform with the four letters, U-C-L-A, enjoy themselves and are proud of what they are doing, and your support is invaluable in that regard.

Thank you and Go Bruins!

42011-12 UCLA Intercollegiate Athletics Annual Report

UCLA’s women’s volleyball team captured the program’s fourth NCAA title (seventh national championship) with a four-set victory over No. 3-seed Illinois on Dec. 17, 2011.

Rachael Kidder had 20 kills and eight digs, earning Most Outstanding Player honors at the tournament. Senior Lauren Van Orden added 53 assists and a career-best 17 digs. Set scores were 25-23, 23-25, 26-24, 25-16.

UCLA claimed its first NCAA women’s volleyball title since 1991 and closed the 2011-12 season with a 30-6 overall record.

“I think we did everything we needed to do to qualify as champions,” head coach Mike Sealy said during a postgame press conference that evening. “We grew as people. We created relationships. We created a team chemistry that is what the real memories are going to be. And I didn’t think that this match was going to define us. It certainly wasn’t going to define us if we didn’t win it.”

The first set featured 12 ties and five lead chances before UCLA edged Illinois at the end, 25-23, to secure an early 1-0 advantage. UCLA jumped to a 10-4 lead in the second set and maintained a 20-13 cushion late in the set, before Illinois won 12 of the final 15 points. Illinois tied the match, 1-1, by winning the second set, 25-23.

In a crucial third set, Illinois overcame a 21-19 deficit by winning four consecutive points to claim a 23-21 cushion. UCLA responded by evening the score, 24-24, before securing a 26-24 victory in the set.

The Bruins never trailed in the fourth set, clinching the championship with a 25-16 victory. UCLA registered early leads of 3-0 and 9-3. With the score 15-10, the Bruins went on a 7-1 scoring run to break open the fourth set.

“It feels really good,” Kidder said in the postgame press conference. “I’m not saying I wasn’t expecting it, because I was pretty confident the whole year. But it feels great to finally bring the program back to what it used to be, and hopefully it will keep going this way in the future.”

Van Orden, who secured all-tournament team acclaim, added four kills and five blocks. Freshman Zoe Nightingale made the All-Tournament Team after posting a career-high 11 blocks and logging eight kills.

Junior Tabi Love recorded 14 kills and three blocks, sophomore Mariana Aquino added four kills and four roofs, and senior Sara Sage had all six of her kills in the deciding set. Three other Bruins had double figures in

UCLA’s road to the 2011 NCAA championship included postseason victories over Maryland Eastern Shore, San Diego, four-time defending NCAA champion Penn State, Texas and Florida State.

“I don’t know how to explain the feeling because it’s just not something that I’ve ever experienced or accomplished before,” Kidder said. “But, it obviously feels great to bring it back to the school and do everything we can for our athletic program.”

62011-12 UCLA Intercollegiate Athletics Annual Report

UCLA’s Al Scates retired at the end of the 2012 men’s volleyball season, closing an illustrious 50-year career as the Bruins’ only head coach in program history.

Leaving behind a legacy of success, longevity and influence in men’s volleyball, Scates served as a driving force in establishing the sport at the NCAA level and driving its popularity to higher standards. Serving as the nation’s the longest tenured Division I volleyball coach, Scates finished his career with a nation-best 1,239 victories, 21 overall national titles (19 NCAA) and 24 conference titles.

In addition, Scates coached 54 first-team All-America selections, 44 USA National Team members, 27 Olympians, 26 USVBA All-America honorees and seven collegiate Player of the Year selections. He compiled an overall record of 1239-290 (.812 winning percentage), the best record among all Division I volleyball coaches.

“I’m happy to take and spend time with my family, and I’m proud of the players that I coached and all of the people that I impacted,” Scates said, following his final match against UC Irvine on April 21, 2012.

Scates graduated from UCLA in 1961 and entered his first year as the program’s head coach in 1963. That season, he led UCLA to a 26-3 overall record and a second place national finish in the USVBA. During that

time, he founded the Southern California Volleyball Association and served as commissioner from 1963-72 (SCVA is now recognized as Mountain Pacific Sports Federation).

In 1970, the NCAA began sponsoring men’s volleyball, and Scates led the Bruins to a 24-1 record and the program’s first NCAA title. UCLA also captured the NCAA championship in 1971 and 1972.

Other memorable championship streaks under Scates’ tenure included UCLA’s four consecutive titles from 1981-1984. The Bruins won an NCAA-record 38 games in 1984, as Scates guided UCLA to its 11th NCAA title in the 15-year history of the sport at the NCAA level.

Scates’ final NCAA title came in 2006, when the Bruins logged a 26-12 overall record after having gone just 13-12 through the team’s first 25 matches.

Scates announced his impending retirement prior to the 2012 season, his 50th year at the helm of UCLA’s program. In his final season, he led UCLA to a 22-8 record, capped by a 3-0 sweep of rival BYU in his final home match as the Bruins’ head coach.

With hundreds of Scates’ former players and coaches looking on, UCLA played one of its best matches of the year, defeating BYU in three quick sets.

Cantlay Wins Hogan Award, Turns ProA two-time All-America selection as a freshman and sophomore at UCLA, men’s golf standout Patrick Cantlay announced in June 2012 that he was turning pro at the Traveler’s Championship that month.

Cantlay had been the world’s No. 1-ranked amateur golfer since the summer of 2011, when he made the cut in five professional events and advanced to the finals of the U.S. Amateur Championship.

In two seasons at UCLA, he played 65 collegiate rounds in 35-under par, something no UCLA golfer has ever accomplished. His career scoring average of 70.7 and his percentage of rounds under par (53.8) are also UCLA records.

In May 2012, Cantlay became the first UCLA golfer to ever win the coveted Hogan Award, annually presented to the nation’s best collegaite golfer at all levels.

Cantlay earned the 2011 Jack Nicklaus Award, in addition to securing the Phil Mickelson Award and GolfWeek’s Player of the Year honors that year. He was selected 2011 Pac-10 Golfer of the Year and Freshman of the Year.

Water Polo Teams Win MPsf Tournament TitlesThe UCLA men’s and women’s water polo teams each won their second MPSF Tournament title in the past three seasons. The UCLA men’s team won the conference tournament at home before losing to crosstown rival USC, 7-4, in the NCAA championship at California the following weekend.

UCLA’s title at the men’s tournament came in exhilarating fashion. Knowing they had to advance to at least the title match, the Bruins won three games by one goal in overtime. Cristiano Mirarchi’s goal in sudden victory overtime against USC in the final handed UCLA a 10-9 victory, the MPSF Tournament championship and an automatic berth to the NCAA championships.

Against USC in the championship match, UCLA claimed an early 5-1 lead before the Trojans roared back to tie the game, 5-5, midway through the third quarter.

With the game tied, 9-9, after both standard overtime periods concluded, Mirarchi became the hero by scoring on a deep shot 54 seconds into the match’s third overtime session.

2011-12 NEWs

After the match, UCLA honored Scates for his 50 incredible years as the Bruins’ head coach with a jersey retirement ceremony and a video tribute. Following the ceremony, Scates gathered with hundreds of former players and coaches and took an alumni picture at the end of the court.

UCLA head coaches Ben Howland (men’s basketball) and Cori Close (women’s basketball) led the participants as they dribbled basketballs and walked around a course through UCLA’s campus. Event proceeds benefit the Pediatric Research Foundation (PCRF) and the Cancer Research Program at Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA. The event has grown each year with a four-event total of over 3,000 participants contributing over $376,000 in the fight against children's cancer.

Marathon KidsFor the past six years, UCLA has partnered with Marathon Kids® and the Los Angeles Unified School District to host two annual Marathon Kids events at Drake Stadium. The Kick-Off Celebration marks the beginning of the five-month program encouraging Marathon Kids to learn to live an active, healthy lifestyle. During the five-month period, children (accompanied by their parents) will run or walk quarter- to half-mile segments towards their goal of the marathon distance of 26.2 miles. Marathon Kids are encouraged to eat five servings of fruits and vegetables per day and to learn how to grow fruits and veggies. Participants are invited to return for the Final Mile Medal Celebration in the spring to receive their finisher medals from UCLA student-athletes.

Mattel Children’s HospitalThroughout the year, several Bruin student-athletes visited playrooms at Mattel Children’s Hospital on a weekly basis, spending time with patients and their families. They are often asked to make special visits to patients who are not able to leave their rooms. This spring, Fox Sports West highlighted football players Johnathan Franklin and Jeff Baca on their weekly visits to the hospital. Student-athletes also volunteered their time with Mattel’s Teen Adventure Program and the annual Halloween “Trick or Treat” event for the patients at the hospital.

Team Prime TimeStudent-athletes volunteered their time with Team Prime Time (TPT), an after-school program for at-risk children from low-income areas of Los Angeles that combines academics, athletics, leadership training and the arts in order to prepare them for the future and allow them to reach their full potential.

Prime Time GamesFor the past three years, student-athletes have participated in Team Prime Time's fully inclusive sports program, the Prime Time Games. This full-inclusion, peer-mentor program helps economically disadvantaged and under-served middle school students from Team Prime Time’s after school program ("coaches") coach and play alongside children with developmental disabilities ("athletes"). UCLA hosted the third annual event (Championship Saturday) in June, where UCLA’s student-athletes served as honorary coaches, captains, and officials for the inclusive soccer and basketball games.

bruin AcademyThe Bruin Athletic Council (BAC) coordinated and hosted the Bruin Academy at Drake Track & Field Stadium this past spring. Kids who participate in Team Prime Time’s after school program were invited to UCLA to participate in an afternoon of fun, educational activities. BAC members and their teammates came together to teach the participants about Coach Wooden's Pyramid of Success. They facilitated interactive activities that stressed the importance of teamwork, initiative, skill, poise, alertness, leadership and competitive greatness.

UCLA Lab school Jog-A-ThonFor the sixth year, Bruin student-athletes volunteered at the UCLA Lab School's annual Jog-A-Thon at Drake Stadium. They helped with warm ups and cheered on kids as they ran laps to earn money for school field trips. Student-athletes also visited the school prior to the event, speaking to students about the importanace of living a healthy lifestyle and working hard at school.

“I’m Going to College”Over 47,000 students from the Los Angeles Unified School District participated in the “I’m Going to College” program, designed to give youngsters (aged from kindergarten through 12th grade) the unique opportunity to attend UCLA events. The IGTC program couples the excitement and tradition of UCLA Athletics with a message about

the importance of higher education. Upon arrival to the event, students are greeted by a UCLA alumnus, current students, or student-athlete volunteers, and are led to the IGTC fair area. Students are immersed in Bruin traditions, such as the spirited UCLA “Eight Clap” cheer, and receive educational information about questions regarding education and the college application process.

Adopt a Classroom ProgramThe Adopt a Classroom pen pal program paired several Bruin teams with elementary and middle

school classrooms across the Los Angeles Unified School District. Student-athletes exchanged letters with students throughout the year, and the classrooms were invited to attend a home event to meet their Bruin pen pals. The Adopt a Classroom program stresses the importance of both education and athletics and aims to motivate students to work towards their goals in school and in life.

WOODEN ACADEMYThe Wooden Academy is a leadership development program designed to educate and support Bruin student-athlete leaders. The program was named after legendary Coach John Wooden, and strives to teach the principles of his Pyramid of Success. We believe that these skills will assist student-athletes in their pursuit to be successful leaders and teammates at UCLA, and as they prepare to be champions in life. Student-athletes have the opportunity to participate in the Wooden Academy each year by attending seminars to learn practical leadership lessons from coaches, administrators and Bruin alumni.

PAULEY PAVILION RENOVATIONUCLA’s legendary Pauley Pavilion began its first-class expansion and renovation in March 2010 with the goal of improving the building not only as a basketball arena, but also as a multi-purpose facility. UCLA publicly announced the “Campaign of Champions” in May 2009, detailing a plan for the transformation of the historic arena to be complete by Fall of 2012. Over the course of the 2011-12 academic year, the building remained closed to construction as several of UCLA’s athletic teams competed either off campus or at adjacent venues on campus.

Highlights of Pauley Pavilion’s renovation and expansion• New seating bowl with new aisles and steps with safety handrails (new seats, seating sections, entry points)• Retractable seating system on the lower level includes individual padded seats instead of benches• Renovated bowl includes a new floor system and over 1,000 additional seats, bringing capacity close to 14,000• New center-hung HD video board and LED ribbon board that encircles the arena’s interior• Facility will feature more than 25 additional points of sale for concessions, increased number of restrooms• North side will include large locker rooms with player lounges for the men’s and women’s basketball teams• Other features for student-athletes include film room, sports medicine rooms, weight room, equipment room• Pavilion Club on the mezzanine of the same structure will serve the campus for numerous special events• The exterior will feature a new marketplace on the south side and a park on the east• In addition, the building’s exterior will feature an expanded Bruin Walk to the north creating the new “front door”• North side of the pavilion will feature a grand lobby

Key renovations at Spaulding FieldThe Bruins’ entire practice facility had its previous fields replaced. The sub-surfaces at Spaulding Field were re-graded, prepped with new drainage systems and protected with heavy waterproof lining material and a drainage mat.

New sand and rubber material-filled AstroTurf synthetic surface rings the entire facility and provides a full-width practice field on the south side. The northern field is a newly-sodded natural turf field that features the same grass type used at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.

UCLA’s football team spent the first two weeks of fall camp in August practicing at Cal State San Bernardino while the team’s practice facility underwent renovations. The Bruins returned to Spaulding Field on Saturday, Aug. 18, with players giving rave reviews about the new field surfaces.

“Networking Night” typically begins with a period of social networking, where student-athletes are given the opportunity to practice their professional etiquette skills with each mentor. The event continues with three rotations of roundtable discussion led by Bruin Varsity Club mentors. The focus of these discussions helps provide networking tips and insight as to each mentor’s personal and professional post-graduate journey.

UCLA’s corporate sponsorships are administered by IMG College, which merged with previous multi-media rights-holder ISP Sports in the fall of 2010. IMG College manages multi-media rights for more than 80 of the leading universities, athletic conferences, and bowl games across the country. Parent company IMG Worldwide divisions also include CLC, which serves as the exclusive

licensing agency for UCLA and more than 200 other collegiate properties.

Since partnering with UCLA in 2004-05, ISP/IMG has tripled the amount of corporate support for the program. The IMG College team helps provide greater opportunities for UCLA student-athletes by generating vital revenue to help fund the department’s overall program.

With the additional resources of IMG Worldwide and a management team that remains virtually intact, the recent merger between IMG College and ISP promises to provide even more opportunity for growth for UCLA.
