Athletic AdministrAtion

Now in her 20th year at Taylor, former Trojan head women’s volleyball coach Dr. Angie Fincannon enters her fourth year as Taylor’s director of intercollegiate athletics. “As director of intercollegiate athletics, I’m con-fident that Dr. Fincannon’s leadership will advance and strengthen Taylor’s athletic program,” said Dr. Stephen Bedi, Taylor’s provost. “She is recognized and respected by her peers as a colleague and winning coach who took the women’s volleyball program to a national level of promi-nence.” Administrative duties for Fincannon include over-seeing the entire operation of the Trojans’ 15-sport athletic department. She is responsible for the budgeting, person-nel evaluations, facilities management, representing the department at various organizational meetings, and the overall leadership of the department.

Fincannon also serves as the assistant to the pro-vost for Taylor’s Bahamian Global Engagement Program. She oversees the coordination of a program that will recruit Bahamian students, offer Taylor students the opportunity to study at the College of the Bahamas, participate in sports ministry, as well as develop partnerships with churches, Christian ministries and over 100 alumni. The 2010-11 Mid-Central College Conference Athletic Director of the Year, Fincannon has been actively involved on the NAIA national scene as a member of the National Administrative Council (NAC), the Competitive Ex-perience Committee, and the NAIA Hall of Fame Commit-tee. A holder of three degrees from Ball State University, including a master’s (‘90) and doctorate (‘04) in educational administration, Fincannon led Taylor’s Physical Education and Human Performance department for five years. Fincannon began her time at Taylor in 1992 when she was hired as Taylor’s volleyball coach and as an assistant professor of PHP. That was the beginning of a successful 13-year coaching career for the 2006 Taylor University Ath-letic Hall of Fame inductee. During that span, Fincannon amassed a career record of 496-131. Her teams won seven MCC championships and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament four times. The Dream Team of 1997 finished the season with a school record 48-3 mark and advanced to the Elite 8 of the national tournament. She was named MCC Coach of the Year five times, coached 10 All-Americans, and led teams on three international mission trips.

Amy Stucky is serving Taylor Athletics for her 17th year. TenaKrause

Head coach Tena Krause has logged more victories than any women’s basketball coach in Taylor’s history with a 421-295 record. She has coached 9 NAIA All-Americans, 3 conference players of the year, 7 NAIA All-District players, 27 All-Conference players, and 2 NCCAA All-Americans. She has led her squad to six NAIA national tournaments and two conference championships. But for Krause, the game has been about more than the accolades. “It has been my goal since I came to Upland that our teams use the talents and abilities God gave us to glorify Him through our efforts both on and off the court,” Krause said. Coaching for Krause is more of a platform to teach a variety of life lessons. “I love this sport because it has chal-lenged me in more areas of my life than anything else in which I have competed. My hope and desire is that our play-ers will learn more about themselves as part of our team as well as develop a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ.” When Krause took over the Lady Trojan basketball

In just her second season on the Taylor bench, Krause’s team posted the most wins in the program’s history with a 23-11 record. The season ended with a Hoosier Conference for Women championship and Krause capturing the HCW Coach of the Year award. The Lady Trojans went on to break that win record two more times including a 24-9 record in 1995-96 and a 28-8 mark in 1996-97. The 1995-96 group won the program’s first Mid-Central College Conference championship, and Krause was named MCC Coach of the Year. The 1996-97 team currently holds the record for the best winning percentage of any team in the program’s history (28-8, .778) and the first NAIA Division II national ranking for the program. They reached as high as 11th in the polls. Krause and the Lady Trojans made their first trip to the NAIA National Tournament in 1996-97 and repeated the following year when they won the MCC championship and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen.

The 2000-01 edition of the Lady Trojans climbed to eighth in the NAIA national polls and finished second in the MCC. A win over the top-rated St. Francis Cougars on the road highlighted the 24-8 season. Five seasons ago Taylor posted a 23-10 record and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament for the third time during Krause’s tenure. Just a year later, Krause surpassed the 300-win plateau. The 2006-07 Lady Trojans may have been the most decorated unit in the program’s history. The team notched a 23-12 record concluding with a NAIA National Tournament Elite Eight appearance and a #22 ranking in the final NAIA national poll. Paced by four seniors and five juniors, the Lady Trojans made quick work of Huntington University in the first round of the conference tournament which set up a third meeting with undefeated and top-ranked cross-county rival Indiana Wesleyan. TU led the Wildcats at halftime and held them to their lowest offensive output of the season with just 46 points. However, Taylor scored just 41 points, and the loss forced the Lady Trojans into a waiting game before they received notification of their at-large selection to the national tournament. Prior to arriving at Taylor, Krause spent one year as an assistant softball coach at Eastern Illinois University and three seasons at Altamont (IL) High School as the head coach for basketball, volleyball, and softball. Her 1980-81 basketball team at Altamont advanced to the Illinois State Tournament Elite Eight, and her volleyball squad made it to the “Sweet Sixteen” in 1981. A native of Shipman, Illinois, Krause earned her B. S. degree in physical education from Greenville College in 1980. At Greenville, Krause starred in basketball, softball, and tennis. She was named to the All-State team in basketball,

the NAIA Player of the Week in basketball, and was also the team MVP in tennis. Krause was honored by her alma mater in the spring of 1996, as she was inducted into the Greenville College Athletic Hall of Fame for her accomplish-ments at Greenville and at Taylor. In 1998, Krause was awarded another accolade as she was inducted into Greenville’s Hall of Fame as a member of the 1980 Greenville women’s basketball team. During the spring of 2010, Krause was enshrined into the Greenville Hall of Fame yet again as a member of the 1979 women’s

tennis team as the only undefeated team in the school’s history. Krause earned a Master’s Degree in Curriculum Development in physical education at Eastern Illinois University in 1988. In the summer of 1996, Krause earned her M.A. in Health Science/Physiology from Ball State University. Krause served as head coach of the Taylor women’s tennis team from 1989-1993. During that time, the Lady Trojans won or tied for the NAIA District title four times, and her 1992 team finished 21st in the nation. A member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), the American Association of University Women (AAUW), the American Health Association (AHA), and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), Krause resides in Muncie, Ind. In addition to her coaching duties, Krause is an associ-ate professor in the Department of Physical Education and Human Performance at Taylor.

When Tena Krause arrived in Upland in 1989, she inherited a team that had produced only one winning season in the previous six years and had never won 20 games in a season. Twenty seasons later Krause reached her milestone 400th victory as head coach of the Lady Trojans and has compiled a career total of 421 wins heading into the 2011-12 season. In 1996-97, her squad was an at-large selection to the NAIA Division II National Tournament, the first team in Taylor women’s basketball history to do so. The following season the Lady Trojans won the Mid-Central College Conference Tournament Championship and advanced to the Sweet 16 at the National Tournament. Krause’s accomplishments at Taylor: • Most wins: 421 • An average of over 19 wins per season with 12 seasons of at least 20 wins • A 28-8 record in 1996-97--the most wins and the best winning percentage in program history (.778) • Six trips to the NAIA Division II National Tournament • NAIA National Tournament Elite Eight in 2007 • NAIA National Tournament Sweet Sixteen in 1997 • MCC Regular Season Champions in 1996 • MCC Tournament Champions in 1998 • MCC Coach of the Year in 1998 • MCC Coach of the Year in 1996 • HCW Coach of the Year in 1991 • 2001 WBCA District 5 Coach of the Year

What former players say about Coach Tena Krause

“Playing for Coach Krause was such a blessing! Being an alum, I truly realize what an amazing woman of God that she is. The skills Coach Krause taught me about basketball brought great achievements and some memorable wins, but the life lessons she taught and the Christian values she modeled continue to affect my life on a daily basis. I am thankful every day for the opportunity I had to play for her as she coached for Christ.”Jenny (Dawes) TynerTaylor University (2003-2007)

‘‘I came to Taylor for the bas-ketball program, to build on my abil-ity. But somewhere in the process of achieving that, I found myself develop-ing so much more under the leader-ship of Coach Tena Krause. She taught me the skills and fun-damentals of basketball, but the great-est thing was the personal character traits she cultivated along the way. Traits I would carry with me throughout the remainder of my life: commitment, respect, honesty, and relationships. I have learned more than basketball; I have learned skills I need to move for-ward in life as a better person. I would not trade that experience for anything and thank God for having allowed the door to open to Taylor University and Coach Krause’s basketball program.’’Lydia HarrisTaylor University (2001-2005)

“During my four years at Taylor, Coach Krause not only helped me to develop as a player and a person, but in my spiritual walk as well. Her knowl-edge, dedication, and care for the team are what have made us success-ful on the floor and in life. I am thankful for the opportunity to have been a part of the TU Women’s Basketball fam-ily.”Katie MaddenTaylor University (2004-2008)

Denise Johnson is head assistant for the Lady Trojans. Coach Johnson is also an assistant professor and teaches in the departments of Physical Education Human Performance and Psychology. She enters her 17th season of working with the Lady Trojans where her responsibilities include recruit-ing, scouting, and many behind-the-scenes duties. As head recruiter, Johnson has built relationships with coaches, prospective recruits, parents, and teachers across the Midwest. These relationships have been the core of her success, having produced athletes that have led TU to the NAIA National Tournament four of the past seven seasons. A 1984 graduate of Eastern Illinois University, Johnson received her MS in Educational Psychology and Counseling from Eastern Illinois University in 1989. In 2007 Coach Johnson received her Master’s Degree in physical education at Ball State University.

Megan Biehl enters her second season as second assistant coach for the women’s basketball program. A 2010 graduate of Taylor with a degree in International Studies, Biehl has been associated with the Lady Trojan program for a number of years, work-ing basketball camp, keeping the official scorebook at games or handling the scoreboard clock. While at Eastbrook High School, she participated in basketball and cross country all four years. Biehl will assist with preseason conditioning, tape exchange, regular season practices and a multitude of administrative duties to keep the Lady Trojan program running smoothly as she assists head coach Tena Krause.

skills and shooting ability to apply pressure on the offensive end of the court. Krause’s pivot players can likewise run the court and figure to add to the club’s ability to transition from defense to offense in an attacking style. Krause notes, “With our depth at guard, we feel we can rotate sev-eral players at different positions without losing our effectiveness or changing our style of play.”

Another key from Krause centers on the team’s ability to understand that they are capable of several styles of play and be flexible enough to handle the changes needed to incorporate them into a ball game. “This team is capable of several different types of sets and if we learn to use them at the correct time it will really allow us to game plan more specifically for opponents,” Krause said.

If there has been a constant for Krause coached teams over the years, it is their deadly effectiveness at the free throw line. For the past six seasons the Trojans have been ranked in the Top Ten in the NAIA for free throwing shooting percentage. This includes a number one ranking in both the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons. Taylor has boasted the NAIA’s leading free throw shooter the past two seasons as Tess Rudolph claimed honors in 2010-11 with a .917 percentage from the line, while recent grad Allison Reece was the top shot in 2009-10 with a .899 percentage.

Krause hopes to take further advantage of this skill, pushing her team to drive the ball to the basket in hopes of creating free throw opportunities. “Last year we scored 120 more points from the line than our opponents. We hope to improve upon that number with our style of play.”

One area the Trojans will be searching for consistency in is the post position. Junior Erika Redweik, along with sophomores Rebecca Daniels and Shayna Wood may have the inside track on playing time, but newcomers Sara Waid and Kayla Schenkel have the tools to play uptempo as well and may work their way into the lineup.

SENIOR

Morgan McLeish (5-6, Guard, Ryle High School) has plenty of tools to run Taylor’s offense, possessing great ball handling skills evidenced by her team-leading 93 assists, better than a 1:1 assist to turn-over ratio and being Krause’s best guard defender. She also pulled down an impres-sive 91 rebounds a year ago. A co-captain this season, McLeish will be relied upon to extend her offensive and defensive knowl-edge and experience to the new guards dotting the roster. McLeish started 29 of 29

The 2011-12 basketball season will see a team in transition when viewing the Taylor University women’s team. After finishing 15-16, 6-10 in 2010-11, history tells us that the Trojans will bounce back under head coach Tena Krause’s tutelage. For Krause it was only her fifth losing season in 22 years at the helm of the TU program, and her first since the 2002-03 season.

A senior and three juniors will be the keys to success this season. Senior Morgan McLeish returns for her fourth campaign with the Trojans. Juniors Erin Guarneri, Erika Redweik and Tess Rudolph will join McLeish to provide leadership on and off the court for the young squad as it seeks to clarify its identity and return to its winning ways. Six sophomores and four freshmen complete the squad, possibly the youngest in Krause’s career and lend credence to the thought that the upperclassmen must come through. McLeish and Rudolph will lead the team as captains this season, but this group of four must establish strong leadership to guide the young club.

Krause graduated over 24 points from her squad with the departure of Allison Reece and Becca Morris as well as losing two players to career ending injuries last year in Nellie Eskew and Paige Spencer, forcing Krause to go deeper into her bench as she prepares them for the upcoming season.

Despite the losses, TU returns five of their top seven scorers from last year including Rudolph who led the Trojans with 14.2 points per game. Guarneri led the team in rebounding as she pulled down 5.9 rebounds per game. When it comes to running the offense, McLeish led the team in assists with 93 while Rudolph dished out 72.

Another change for Taylor will be the transitioning to a more up-tempo style of offense. Nine of the fourteen members of the team are guards, and Krause plans to take advantage of their quickness, ball

games her sophomore year and 26 of 31 her junior season.

JUNIORS

Erin Guarneri (5-10, guard/forward, Marion High School) has the talent to play inside or out and uses her versatility to thwart opponent’s defensive plans. She has the size to post up on the block as well as the skill to play from the perimeter giv-ing defenses plenty of headaches. Having started 15 of 16 games her freshman sea-son and 20 of 30 last year, Guarneri brings loads of experience to the court. She was TU’s leading rebounder in 2010-11, grab-bing 5.9 boards per game to go with her 6.7 points per game and .783 free throw percentage.

Erika Redweik (5-9, forward, Winamac High School) led the team in shooting per-centage last year having shot .561 for the season. Though limited in minutes due to an injury, Redweik was third on the roster in offensive rebounds, and is the second leading returning scorer and rebounder. A slasher offensively, she should benefit from a more up-tempo style.

Tess Rudolph (5-7, guard, Reitz Memorial High School) returns as Taylor’s leading scorer with a 14.2 ppg average. Rudolph earned All-MCC Honorable Mention hon-ors in 2010-11 as well as being the number one free throw shooter in NAIA Division II basketball. A two-year captain, her best skill set is on the perimeter where she led TU with a .376 shooting percentage from the 3-point line. Rudolph’s penetration skills are also up to par as she dished out 72 assists, second on the club. She started 14 of 29 games her freshman season, and all 31 last year.

SOPHOMORES

Kelsey Bryant (5-6, Guard, Greenfield Central High School) averaged 17 min-utes of playing time during her inaugural season, playing in every game and start-ing four. Her rise to the collegiate level is

marked by her being named to the MCC All-Freshmen Team. She should put her experience to good use as her knowledge of the offense grows along with her role in running a more up-tempo style for Coach Krause. The ball-hawking Bryant came up with a team leading 53 steals last season on the defensive end as well as 100 total rebounds. She is a tenacious defender and loves the challenge of taking on any offensive threat.

Rebecca Daniels (6-2, Forward, Solid Rock Christian High School) has the frame to be TU’s presence in the paint this year with the graduation of Reece, but she must use her freshmen experience to its fullest to give the Trojans some power on the inside when needed. Her .414 shoot-ing percentage is a good indication of her offensive ability and though the tallest member of the roster, Daniels has the abil-ity to run the court.

Linden Daiss (5-10, Forward, Sheridan High School) saw action in 16 games dur-ing the 2010-11 season. She has taken some big strides during the off season and looks to improve her offensive skill set with a good mid-range jumper. Daiss should work into the rotation at either the wing or on the block.

Ashley Fouch (5-4, Guard, Muncie Central High School) showcases her skills of speed and quickness while on the court. Playing in 29 games last year provided Fouch with the experience necessary to improve her floor knowledge and decision making skills at the point guard position. At her best driving and dishing, beating defenders off of the dribble puts Fouch in position to take it to the basket or hit her open teammate for the shot.

Shayna Wood (6-0, Forward, Marion High School) brings great defensive and shot blocking skills to the paint for the Trojans. Wood notched seven blocks while averag-ing just six minutes in her 22 games last year. She is expected to combine with Daniels for a young but potentially potent inside game. Her offensive game is an area where she continues to work as she brings her game up to the highly competi-tive Mid-Central College Conference level.

Kelci Freds (5-7, Guard, Warsaw) comes to Taylor following her freshman year at NCAA Division I South Carolina Upstate. Adept at either the 1 or 2 guard spot, Freds will fit immediately into Krause’s rotation due to her experience, shooting range and quickness. Her outside firepower should alleviate some of the pressure on Rudolph. Freds averaged over 15 points and three assists along with a .410 shooting per-centage from 3-point land during her high

school career.

FRESHMAN

Erinn Behn (6-0, guard, Illiana Christian High School) brings an element seldom seen in small college basketball: The 6-foot perimeter player. Behn won the Illinois State Finals 3-point competition and averaged 13.2 points per game. Her size provides a great platform for her pull-up jumper when attacking the basket and she will consistently present a matchup prob-lem for opposing defenses.

Rayana Carneiro (5-7, guard, Calvary Christian High School) adds plenty of depth to the TU lineup with her aggres-sive attacking style. Carneiro’s speed and quickness should prove very complimenta-ry to the Trojans. She averaged 25 points, six assists and four steals in high school, and was honored as a Broward County (Fla.) Top 5 player. Look for Carneiro to attack the middle of any defense and dish to the open teammate if the path to the bucket is closed.

Kayla Schenkel (5-10, forward, Huntington North High School) may possess the best speed of any of the paint players, and this will play to her advantage as the Trojans push the tempo of the game. Strong on the boards, Schenkel averaged 6.7 points and 4.7 boards last year at Huntington North. If the Trojans are successful with a speedy set, Schenkel may add an important piece as a paint player with exceptional speed.

Sarah Waid (5-10, forward, South Hamilton High School) averaged 12.7 points and 9.0 rebounds per game for South Hamilton last year. The four-year starter was a first team all-conference player both her junior and senior years and played in the Iowa Senior All-Star game. Waid’s ability on the block to sit and seal her defender should allow her to adjust quickly to the collegiate game. A strong rebounder with a good court IQ, she could work her way into the rotation.

THE SCHEDULE

Some things never change, and the chal-lenge of playing in the Mid-Central College Conference is one of them. With four Top 25 ranked teams and one receiving votes the MCC is again as good a conference as there is in the NAIA Division II ranks.

The schedule will match the Trojans against four teams that made appearances in the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship last season.

Taylor, picked sixth in the MCC preseason coaches’ poll, kicks off its season on Friday, Nov. 4 as the Trojans host Trinity Christian

(Ill.) in the second game of the Taylor Tip-Off Tournament at 7 p.m. in Odle Arena. The winner will advance to face the winner of Aquinas (Mich.) and Marygrove (Mich.) in the championship game at 2 p.m. on Saturday while the losers will play in the consolation game at noon.

After three more non-conference games, including home matchups with Midway College (Ky.) and Purdue University-Calumet, the Trojans will open conference play on Tuesday, Nov. 22 against Goshen at 7 p.m. in Odle Arena. The game will mark the final home game for the Trojans before they embark on a seven game road trip that will keep them away from Odle Arena for more than a month.

In its second conference game of the season Taylor will face new MCC member Mount Vernon Nazarene with a trip to face the Cougars on Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. before

making the trip on Saturday, Dec. 3 to face Bethel.

The Trojans will head to their second tour-nament of the season on Dec. 16-17 when Taylor takes part in the Trinity Christian College Tournament in Palos Heights, Ill. The Trojans will open the tournament with Clarke (Iowa) at 7 p.m. on the 16th and fol-low up on day two with a matchup against Malone at 2 p.m.

Taylor will wrap up 2011 with the annu-al Taylor Holiday Classic on December 30-31 as the Trojans face off with St. Mary-of-the-Woods at 8 p.m. on the 30th and host Bryan (Tenn.) on the last day of the year at 2 p.m.

Senior Day and the last home game of the regular season will feature the Trojans against rival Indiana Wesleyan on Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. before Taylor wraps up the regular season with a trip to Grace on Feb. 18.

2010-11 SEASON REVIEW

The 2010-11 team finished with a 15-16 overall record and a 6-10 mark in conference games, featuring two wins over teams rated in the NAIA D-II Coaches’ Top 25 Poll.

Taylor started off its season with a thrilling 82-79 win over Robert Mor-ris (Ill.) in the Purdue-Calumet Tip-Off Classic. Senior Allison Reece scored a career-high 31 points in the win. The Trojans fell in the next game of the season-starting tournament to Purdue-Calumet, but bounced back four days later with a dominant 91-49 win over Wilberforce.

The Trojans improved to 4-1 to start the season with two more wins in the Indiana Tech SportOne Shootout. Taylor dropped Holy Cross College 75-63 on Nov. 12, then picked up their second 40-plus point win with a 88-46 victory over Marygrove a day later.

On Nov. 23 the Trojans played their first of four games against ranked op-ponents in just over two weeks. Taylor fell to MCC-rival No. 3 Indiana Wesley-an but knocked off No. 4 Saint Francis 79-65 a week later in the team’s sec-ond conference game. Playing on the road, the Trojans held the high-pow-ered Cougar offense scoreless for four minutes down the stretch to secure the victory. Reece had 20 points and 10 rebounds in the win.

Taylor didn’t waste any time in beating another ranked opponent when they

sunk No. 23 Huntington 69-63 three days later. Sophomore Tess Rudolph shot 2-4 from behind the three-point-line and finished with 12 points. The Trojans sat at 8-4 after a loss to No. 13 Cedarville, which finished off a gru-eling midseason stretch for the team.

The team spent the following weekend in Daytona Beach, Fla., for the Day-tona Beach shootout, and nearly got another win over a ranked opponent in a 70-69 loss to NAIA D-I No. 10 Bethel (Tenn.). Rudolph scored 29 points on 10-15 shooting for the Trojans, who lost on two made free-throws after leading 69-68 with nine seconds to play.

Taylor sat at 11-6 overall and 2-1 in conference when the calendar year turned to 2011, but the Trojans went just 4-10 during the last month and a half of the season, playing only confer-ence games.

The Trojans got wins over Grace, Bethel, Spring Arbor and Goshen but lost in rematches with No. 8 Indiana Wesleyan and No. 4 Saint Francis. Taylor’s season ended when they played Saint Francis for the third time in the MCC Tournament Quarterfinals. The Trojans trailed by just four with 25 second remaining, but fell by a score of 71-64.

After the season Rudolph and Reece were both named MCC Honorable Mention All-Conference. Freshman

Kelsey Bryant averaged 5.3 PPG and was named to the MCC-All-Freshman Team.

Reece and fellow senior Becca Morris both surpassed 1,000 points for their collegiate careers during the sea-son. Reece was second on the team in both scoring and rebounding with averages of 13.7 PPG and 5.7 RPG. Morris average 10.9 PPG and shot 36% from behind the 3-point line.

Sophomore Erika Redweik put in 7.7 PPG and added 4.2 RPG. Fellow sophomore Erin Guarneri led the team in rebounding with 5.9 RPG and also averaged 6.7 PPG. As a team the Trojans averaged 69.0 PPG, the most since the 2006-2007 season. The 14.0 APG and 8.8 SPG were also the most in four years. Reece’s 1.7 BPG helped Taylor achieve a higher BPG average (3.5) than any other Trojan team in over seven years.

Rudolph averaged 14.2 PPG in her second season and joined Reece as the second Trojan in two years to lead the nation in free-throw percentage after shooting 91.7% from the charity-stripe. Reece broke Taylor’s career free-throw percentage mark with a four-year percentage of 84.9%. Taylor as a team ranked third in the country with a 77.0% free-throw percentage.

2011-12 TAYLOR WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Mid-Central College Conference, which enters its 53rd season in 2011-12, is one of the oldest con-ferences in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Founded in 1959, the conference cur-rently consists of 10 colleg-es and universities located in Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio. MCC member insti-tutions are Bethel College (Mishawaka, Ind.); Goshen College (Goshen, Ind.); Grace College (Winona Lake, Ind.); Huntington University (Huntington, Ind.); Indiana Wesleyan University (Marion, Ind.); Marian University (Indianapolis, Ind.); Mount Vernon Nazarene University (Mount Vernon, Ohio); University of Saint Francis (Fort Wayne, Ind.); Taylor University (Upland, Ind.); and its new-est member, Spring Arbor University (Spring Arbor, MI).

The purpose of the Mid-Central College Conference is to promote intercollegiate

athletics in a well-rounded athletic program, maintain high ideals, and to promote sportsmanship. The league sponsors championships in

the following men’s sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, ten-nis, and track and field. The MCC also sponsors cham-pionships in the following women’s sports: basketball,

cross country, soccer, soft-ball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

Last year, over 50 Mid-Central College Conference athletes were named NAIA All-Americans. Also, over 200 MCC student-athletes were named NAIA Scholar-Athletes. MCC teams are frequently found in the NAIA National Polls in all sports.

In addition to honoring out-standing achievement on the playing fields in all 14 sports, the conference also recognizes achievement in the classroom. Each year an Academic All-Mid-Central Conference Team is select-ed. Last year, over 250 ath-letes representing each of the nine member institutions were so honored.

On June 1, 2008, J.D. Collins, a former Indiana business CEO and veteran NCAA college basketball referee, was named the first commissioner of the MCC.

2011-12 TAYLOR WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Taylor University’s athletic department maintains high academic and graduation goals for approximately 300 student-athletes involved in its intercollegiate athletic program.

To help achieve these goals, Taylor created the Student-Athlete Academic Support Program in 1998. Student achievement and performance was immediate and still continues today. After the spring 2010 semester, the cumulative grade point average for all student-athletes was 3.25. There were also 81 student-athletes who earned a spot on the Dean’s List during the spring semester with a 3.60 minimum grade point average.

Twelve of Taylor’s fifteen intercollegiate athletic teams were recognized by the NAIA as scholar teams for the 2010-2011 academic year. To be selected as a scholar team, the team’s average GPA must be 3.0 or above.

Taylor student-athletes commit countless hours to practices, competitions, and training. The Student-Athlete Academic Support Program seeks to assist student-athletes in the effort to balance those hours with their aca-demic demands. All incoming freshmen and transfer student-athletes attend seminars during the fall semester that discuss topics such as time and stress management, study skills, learning styles, test taking, and campus resources. The program also mandates a monitored study table, tutor possibilities, and academic advising. Upon the request of their respective coaches, returning student-athletes also become involved in the program.

Scott Stan enters his second year as the director of the Student-Athlete Academic Support Program. He oversees all details of the program and works in conjunction with the Academic Enrichment Center to connect student-athletes with the tutoring program and the writing center. In addition, he is also the staff mentor of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council which is comprised of one student-athlete from each varsity team. Their goal is to be a voice for student-athletes and to unify Taylor athletic teams while maintaining the Taylor University vision of reflecting Christ through their words and actions. The council also seeks out service opportunities for Taylor ath-letic teams to become involved in the community.
