The 2011-12 University of New Haven women’s basketball team is coming off an injury plagued season but hopes to gain prominence in the North-east-10 Conference this year with the addition of several talented newcomers as well as an experi-enced sophomore class. Without any senior leader-ship, head coach Jessica Smith is challenged with the task of coaching a young squad that features six freshmen, fi ve sophomores and one junior.

The Chargers will look for captains Nikita Reddy and Ayana Duncanson to step up and provide leadership after the departure of fi ve senior class members from a year ago. Reddy, the lone junior on the team, missed the entire 2010-11 season with a knee injury but after an impressive offseason, she looks poised to return to her old form. As a fresh-man, the Germantown, Md. native appeared in nine games and scored 13 points with three assists and three rebounds. Her role will increase drasti-cally this winter and is expected to start. Co-captain Duncanson had a very productive freshman cam-paign. The 5-foot-11 forward started 22 games and appeared in 24 contests, while leading the team in rebounding with 5.7 per game. She averaged 4.6 points per game and will be looked upon to provide a veteran presence in the front court.

New Haven’s offense will rely heavily on its point guard and second leading scorer from a year ago, sophomore Anh-Dao Tran. Tran made an immedi-

ate impact as a freshman and played in 21 games while starting 17. A Northeast-10 Conference All-Rookie Team selection, Tran led the team in several categories; total points (241), three-point percent-age (42.0), assists (3.7) and tied for the team lead in three-point fi eld goals made per game (1.8). Not only a threat from downtown, Tran can also pen-etrate and score off the dribble. She ranked second on the team in scoring with 11.5 points per game on 38.1 percent from the fl oor (82-215). The Web-ster, Mass. native reached double fi gures in scoring 13 times throughout the course of the season and will be a key component to New Haven’s success.

Audrey Cunningham and Ana Obella also return to the squad this season for their sophomore cam-paigns and are joined by fellow classmate and newcomer Amber Martinez. Cunningham provides another deep threat for the Chargers who connect-ed on 47 three-pointers last season to rank sixth all-time on the New Haven single-season record list. The sharp-shooter from Germantown, Md. averaged 7.0 points per game in 14 starts and 25 appear-ances. Obella provides depth to the Chargers’ front court. The 6-foot forward from Miami, Fla. made 15 appearances coming off the bench last season and totaled 14 points and 20 rebounds. Newcomer Am-ber Martinez rounds out the long list of sophomore class members. A three-sport athlete for Seymour High School, the 5-foot-9 guard adds depth to a talented back court.

“Our returners have made a commitment to getting better every day and have focused on demonstrat-ing a winning attitude and consistent leadship,” said head coach Jessica Smith.

New Haven added six other new faces to compli-ment a well-balanced mix of guards and forwards. Freshmen Aquillin Hayes, Elizabeth Cruso, Monica Schacker, Ashley LeBlanc, Bria Moore and Rykema Stone will all don the Chargers’ uniform this winter.

Hayes, a 5-foot-8 guard from Harlem, N.Y., averaged 22 points, 13.8 rebounds and 8.7 assists per game at Wings Academy. She helped lead the team to a Division A Championship Title and will be asked to bring that type of success to the University of New Haven program. Alongside Hayes in the backcourt will be Cruso and Schacker. Both guards boast tre-mendous ball-handling skills and serve as reliable backups to Tran at the point guard position. Cruso, a McDonald’s All-American Team nominee, was an All-State, All-Class and All-Division First Team selec-tion at Westerly High School in Rhode Island. The talented freshman currently holds the all-time three point fi eld goals record at Westerly with 163 makes and also surpassed 1,500 career points. She will be looked upon to provide a spark offensively. Schacker, a Doylestown, Pa. native, helped lead Germantown Academy to three state titles and four Inter-Ac Championships. She was also named the team’s Most Outstanding Offensive Player award as a senior.

The Chargers have brought in plenty of height to the team’s front court with 6-foot-2 LeBlanc and 6-foot-1 Stone. LeBlanc comes to New Haven from Methuen, Mass. where she received a Mer-rimack Valley All-Conference Team selection as a senior. The two-sport high school athlete should be a strong contributor on the glass. Stone, another McDonald’s All-American nominee, played with Hayes at Wings Academy. The Bronx, N.Y. native surpassed 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds during her high school stint.

“Our newcomers have added great energy and competitiveness which makes for a well balanced deep team,” added coach Smith.

The Chargers hope their hard work and prepara-tion during the offseason will pay off as they look to return to postseason play in the Northeast-10 Conference. This young, talented team is getting better each day and should surprise some teams in 2011-12.

The ScheduleThe Chargers open the 2011-12 campaign on the road in non-conference action at Dowling Col-lege on November 13. The team’s home opener at Charger Gymnasium will be played the following game on November 16. The home opener is also the beginning of NE-10 play as New Haven will host Saint Rose.

Five of the Chargers’ fi rst seven games will be played at home. On December 10, New Haven heads across town for its fi rst look at Southern Con-necticut. The team’s fi nal game of 2011 will be a non-conference match at Felician on December 30.

The New Year will feature all conference games as New Haven is set to see 15 NE-10 opponents in a two-month span. On January 11 UNH hosts Franklin Pierce at home. On January 21, they host reigning NE-10 Champions and preseason favorite Bentley. The Falcons also received the preseason No. 2 spot in the USA Today ESPN Division II Top 25 Poll. New Haven ends the season with two-straight home games against American Int’l and cross-town rival Southern Connecticut before the fi nal regular sea-son game at Saint Rose on February 21.

The Northeast-10 Championship Tournament starts February 24 with the fi ve through 12 seeds playing. The NE-10 Quarterfi nals take place on February 26 followed by the semifi nals on March 1. The 2011-2012 NE-10 Champions will be crowned on Sunday, March 4.

JESSICA SMITH

Jessica Smith was hired as the 15th head coach in University of New Haven women’s basketball history in May, 2006. This will be her sixth season as the program’s head coach. During her first five seasons at UNH, Coach Smith has enjoyed a successful 79-66 overall record and two conference championship game appearances. She’s also won two conference regular season titles and guided the Chargers to one NCAA Tournament appearance. In four of her fi ve seasons, she guided the Chargers to the postseason.

In Coach Smith’s fourth season she led the Chargers to their eighth straight postseason appearance. The Chargers advanced to the Quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 Conferance Championship Tournament after defeating Southern Connecticut 81-65 in the fi rst round.

Smith’s third season she helped lead the way for the Chargers to break into quite possibly the most prestegious Division II women’s basketball conference in the nation, the Northeast-10 Conference. The 2008-09 season was highlighted by a season-opening 69-68 victory over nationally ranked No. 10 Holy Family. The Chargers also posted their fi rst NE-10 win on November 22 in a 56-55 win at Le Moyne College. The Chargers advanced to their first NE-10 Championship tournament as the 11th seed, and pulled off an 80-74 upset of sixth seed Assumption in the opening round.

Coach Smith’s second season with the Chargers was highlighted by a nearly perfect, 19-1 conference record. The team’s only conference loss of the regular season came in a 79-69 loss at Queens College on February 6. Smith help guide the Chargers to eight consecutive wins to close out the end of the regular season and into the fi rst two rounds of the conference championship

tournament. UNH was one of the region’s top teams all season long, winning 13 of their fi nal 16 games heading into the ECC Tournament. The Chargers scored 70 or more points in 12 of those games and topped 80 points four times throughout the season, including two games over 100.

Coach Smith found success quickly in her fi rst season, guiding the Chargers to their second consecutive East Coast Conference championship and the team’s second NCAA Northeast Regional berth in a row.

Smith came to UNH from Miami University of Ohio, where she served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the RedHawks for fi ve seasons. In 2004, Miami won the Mid-American Conference (MAC) regular-season title and advanced to the second round of the WNIT. In 2003, the RedHawks won the Mid-American Conference’s East Division.

Prior to her time at Miami of Ohio, Smith spent three successful seasons as head girls basketball coach at Bishop Hartley High School in Columbus, Ohio. At Bishop Hartley, her teams posted an impressive 66-12 record and captured the Ohio state championship in 2000. The team also advanced to the state Final Four in 2001. Following Bishop Hartley’s state title in 2000, Smith was named Ohio Coach of the Year by the Ohio Coaches Association, the Associated Press and the Columbus Dispatch.

A 1995 graduate of the University of Rhode Island, Smith served as a student assistant coach with the Rams from 1992-95, and was hired as a full-time assistant for the 1995-96 season. That season, URI made its fi rst-ever NCAA Tournament appearance while winning a share of the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship.

Mission StatementPlay 4Kay is a global, unifi ed effort for a nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund, in partnership with the WBCA and The V Foundation, is the offi cial Play 4Kay charity.

HistoryThe late Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women’s basketball coach, served as the catalyst for Play 4Kay, formerly known as WBCA Pink Zone, after her third recurrence of breast cancer in 2006. That year, Coach Yow joined forces with the WBCA in an effort to raise breast cancer awareness in women’s basketball, on campuses and in communities.

WBCA Play 4Kay™ 2012The Chargers offi cial WBCA 4Kay™ game this season will be Saturday, February 18 as New Haven hosts Southern Connecticut in the team’s fi nal regular season contest at Charger Gymnasium.

The Charger women’s basketball team is annually one of the most active teams at UNH, participating in a number of community engagement projects and running camps and clinics throughout the academic year. Last year the team participated in over 500 hours of service.

The entire university, not just the Department of Athletics, places an emphasis on giving back and being good neighbors. Community involvement is also a key focal point of the NCAA “I Chose Division II” campaign, which puts an emphasis on the six core attributes of Division II. Among them are Service and Learning.

The Department of Athletics has set a department-wide goal of 2,000 community service hours for the 2010-11 academic year. On-going projects include reading to children at local elementary schools, volunteering at shelters and soup kitchens and raking leaves for neighbors around Charger Gymnasium.

Through their participation in community service events throughout West Haven, the University of New Haven Athletic Department continues to demonstrate how, as a Division II institution, UNH is committed to developing students and communities by actively engaging in shared experiences. Through community engagement, Division II can direct the energy and spirit of winning student-athletes to positively change society—as they change themselves.

COMMITTED TO COMMUNITY

The Northeast-10 Conference enters its 31st year as there is little surprise why the Northeast-10 Conference has continued to grow stronger year by year since it’s inception and now stands as a model conference of NCAA Division II.

The conference was built from the ground up with strong cornerstones and a vision of becoming the premier Division II NCAA athletic conference in the nation. A quick look around the league today will tell even the casual observer that the NE-10 has done so. The conference is a powerful union of strong academic and athletic colleges and universities that incorporates 16 institutions from New York and New England. The NE-10 sponsors the most championship sports of any Division II conference in the nation.

The Northeast-10 can look to a long history of successes – the growth from seven original schools to more than double its size 20 years later – the contention for and winning of national championships – the change in league structure from on-campus administration to a central governing location – the anticipation of, coping with and addition of modern technology - the recognition of student-athlete performances in the classroom where the real competitions are played out – all of them have been built thanks to the hard work and dedication through the years of thousands of people who have, at one time or another, called the Northeast-10 home for their athletics program or their livelihood.

The NE-10 history began with the vision of a few good men and women. It was back in 1979 that a handful of athletics directors realized that the world of college athletics was changing and that they, and their programs, would have to change as well.

In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s the NCAA began to emphasize the importance of conferences in organizing competition and determining bids to NCAA national tournaments. The NCAA required six teams to be recognized as a conference in order to award championships, and the creation of national tournaments with automatic qualifi ers to league champions became a new goal towards which teams could strive.

The founding fathers of the NE-10 were only happy to comply. Thus, a handful of athletic directors at smaller schools, classifi ed Division II and of similar scope, academic makeup and athletic abilities hatched the idea of a new athletics conference in New England. Therefore, on October 9, 1979, a simple press release announced that a new unnamed Division II conference was being formed. Eight months later, at the Pleasant Valley Country Club in Springfi eld, Mass., the league was publicly announced.

The Northeast-7 Conference established instant credibility in its membership and that credibility led to a slow but continued expansion through the years. The admittance of Saint Anselm in 1981 created the Northeast-8. In 1984, Hartford joined the ECAC Division I North Atlantic Conference but was immediately replaced by Merrimack.

The “Northeast-10” name came about when Saint Michael’s and Quinnipiac joined the league in 1987 and the conference remained stable until 1995 when Springfield left for Division III. The league stayed at 10 members as Le Moyne joined the league in 1996 from the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) and briefl y expanded to 11 when Pace joined in 1998 from the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC). Quinnipiac elevated to the Division I Northeast Conference (NEC) to again return the foundation of 10 until the last major expansion took place prior to 2001 when fi ve new schools joined the fold. Franklin Pierce, Southern New Hampshire University (formerly New Hampshire College), the University of Massachusetts Lowell and Southern Connecticut State University were joined by the College of Saint Rose.

In 2008, Bryant University departed for Division I and the University of New Haven immediately to replace Bryant in all sports, maintaining a 15 institutions in the conference.

Adelphi University, became the newest member of the conference last year, bringing membership to 16 full-time institutions.

Deborah Chin, Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation

Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., University PresidentSteven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., became the sixth president of the University of New Haven (UNH) on July 1, 2004. Dr. Kaplan joined a nearly 85-year-old institution dedicated to experiential education. With enrollment of over 5,200 undergraduate and graduate students representing more than 35 states and some 45

countries, UNH has several nationally ranked programs in a number of majors in business, engineering, public safety, and the liberal arts and sciences.

Dr. Kaplan was presented to the community in March 2004 by then Board of Governors Chairman Robert Alvine, who characterized the president-designate as energetic, well-liked and respected, focused and remarkably effective in mobilizing an institution’s resources to achieve target results. His highest priorities are strengthening the University’s endowment, growing enrollment to optimum levels, and engendering an atmosphere for excellence among all constituencies. He has focused on establishing strong relationships with members and organizations within UNH’s circle of constituents – faculty, students, administrators, alumni, friends, campus neighbors and leaders of Connecticut’s business and public service communities.

As president, he oversees a faculty of nearly 400, 530 staff, and an annual budget of $84 million.

Previously, Dr. Kaplan was chancellor and professor of English at the University of Virginia’s College at

Wise, Virginia, the only four-year branch campus of the University of Virginia and one of the nation’s best public colleges, according to U. S. News & World Report.

Dr. Kaplan began his teaching career in 1982 as an Instructor of English at the University of Maryland, European Division. From 1985-1989, he served as Visiting Lecturer in American Studies at Eberhard-Karls Universitat, Tübingen, Germany – one of the oldest and most highly regarded universities in Europe. After completing his doctoral studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, he returned to the U.S. to teach English at the University of Southern Colorado. Within three years, he was made department chair, serving in that capacity for two years before becoming Director of the Center for International Studies.

Dr. Kaplan also served as dean of Arts and Humanities at SUNY College at Buffalo, an institution with about 11,000 students; and as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Butler University, an independent comprehensive institution of fi ve colleges and 3,400 students, which is ranked by U. S. News & World Report as one of the top regional universities in the Midwest.

He completed his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at Eberhard-Karls Universität in Germany and holds the Master of Arts degree (with a concentration in philosophy, German, and English), also from Eberhard-Karls Universitat. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Dr. Kaplan is the author of a book on American translations of the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke, a number of scholarly essays, a book on Tim O’Brien’s

fi ction with the University of South Carolina Press, and an anthology of international war stories with the University Press of Colorado.

Dr. Kaplan and his wife, Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan, are both ardent opera buffs and love to ballroom dance, hike, and downhill ski. They share a great love for the visual and performing arts and have traveled to over twenty-fi ve countries in twenty-fi ve years, including Tanzania where they hiked up Mt. Kilimanjaro. They have a son and three daughters

Dr. Kaplan grew up in Chicago, the son of a shoe store owner and an actress-comedienne. He said his stepfather, Irving Glovin, taught him to love ideas and appreciate the contributions we all need to make to good causes. He was a good friend of Oskar Schindler, was instrumental in getting the story out in book and fi lm form (associate producer of the fi lm), and is the President of the Oskar Schindler Humanitarian Foundation. Dr. Kaplan also serves on the board of the foundation.

His wife grew up in Southwest Germany. She holds the equivalent of an American M.A. in Secondary Education and taught at a German high school. She is a ceramics artist and taught German and pottery during their time in Wise.

Deborah Chin became the school’s fourth director of athletics in 1993, and currently oversees a department which sponsors 17 NCAA Division II varsity sports. She was elected to the prestigious position of Chair for the NCAA’s Division II Management Council for 2008.

UNH Athletics has enjoyed a high level of success across the board during Chin’s tenure as Director of Athletics, advancing to NCAA tournament play 50 times in 14-plus years. UNH has recently made a number of capital improvements to athletic and recreational facilities, including the construction of the multi-million dollar David A. Beckerman Student Recreation Center, a $1.3 million synthetic turf renovation of Kayo Field (soccer and lacrosse), as well as installation of state-of-the-art blue and yellow synthetic turf at the new Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. Chin spearheaded efforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and fi nd UNH a new athletics conference that best fi ts the institution’s long-term academic and athletic aspirations. Both goals were accomplished when UNH announced on November 13, 2007 that it had been accepted as a full member of the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. The Charger football team will return to the gridiron for the 2009 season.

A member of the University of New Haven staff since 1975, Chin began her UNH career as Coordinator of Women’s Athletics. She was responsible for starting

the women’s intercollegiate athletic program at UNH, coaching volleyball, tennis, basketball and softball in the early years. Chin eventually surrendered all head coaching responsibilities, except volleyball, when she was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in 1979.

Among her numerous honors, Chin was named the NACWAA NCAA Division II Administrator of the Year in 2009 after serving as the D-II Management Council Chair. In 2007, the Connecticut Sportswriters’ Alliance presented Chin with the Gold Key Award, the state’s top sporting honor which recognizes significant contributions to athletics in the State of Connecticut. Chin won the NACDA/Continental Airlines Athletic Director of the Year for the Northeast Region in 1998-99 and was awarded the NACWAA Josten’s District I Administrator of the Year Award in 1997. Chin won the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports Presidential Award in March 1997 and was the Connecticut Post Woman of the Year in 1993.
