Commencing Countdown With One Goal Left, Senior-Laden Lady Bears Look to Leave Mark

Prior to her second year on the job in 2008-09, Lady Bears head coach Nyla Milleson laid the foundation for the massive re-structuring of the storied Missouri State program . Fast-forward four years and Milleson credits that recruiting class for being a lynchpin in the development that has returned the program to prominence . We have a very good senior class that has come in and bought into what were doing and have been the cornerstones of this rebuilding process, Milleson said . They deserve a lot of credit for, in the first year, being thrown to the wolves and persevering to get back-to-back 20-win seasons . Those five seniors Lacey Boshe, Casey Gar-rison, Jasmine Malone, Jaleshia Roberson and Regan Soldner have led the team to 46 wins over the last two seasons, to be exact . However, one elusive goal remains: winning a Missouri Valley Conference championship . Last year, after being the preseason pick to win the regular sea-son title, the Lady Bears finished in a three-team tie for second place and lost to UNI in the MVC Tournament championship game . So the Lady Bears will go for it again with one of the most experienced squads in the confer-ence, as the team returns the five seniors and 10 letterwinners . That includes Garrison, one of the best all-around players in the conference, who has earned First-Team All-MVC honors in her first three seasons . That experience combined with the depth provided by nine underclassmen back up Millesons belief that 2011-12 could be a great year for MSU in a conference that always puts teams to the test night-in and night-out . This is the deepest team weve had . I think

son said . We really asked her to assume a leader-ship role from the day she walked on campus and she embraced that challenge and that opportunity and has continued to grow and mature into one of the best to ever put on a Lady Bear uniform . Milleson is looking for Roberson to round out her game in her senior season after finishing fourth on the squad in points per game (7 .6) last year . A three-point specialist, Roberson took more than three-fourths of her field-goal attempts from beyond the arc last year . However, Milleson said the Lady Bears need more from her in her final season, especially on the other end of the floor. Jaleshia had to work very hard to get herself back and try to help as much as she did last year . We need her to take another step and perform on both ends of the floor like she did as a sopho-more, Milleson said . I think shes pretty close . Obviously, her strength is shooting the 3 and I expect that to continue, but were really going to need her to step up the defensive end and get that complete game back . The Lady Bears will be able to rely on the de-fensive abilities of Malone once again this season . The San Antonio native placed fourth among the Lady Bears in total rebounds a year ago, and placed third in points per game with a 9 .9 aver-age . She will be counted on to frustrate opponents with a high-intensity game and a lock-down pres-ence on defensive end of the floor. Also returning is sophomore Karly Buer, a 5-7 guard who earned a spot on the Valleys All-Freshman team last year . Buer displayed a solid all-around game last year, averaging 5 .1 points, 2 .1 rebounds and 1 .4 assists per game . Milleson said Buer played well down the stretch last year

the biggest key for us is to stay focused on the big team goals, Milleson said . I think you can go back to the game last year where this years three senior guards had 20-plus points in one game . We have people who have the ability to score so you cant just focus on Casey . I think weve developed those types of players where its not just all about Casey, although I know thats where a lot of the focus goes. I think our entire team is unselfish and the goal is to win a Valley championship and if that means Casey scoring 25 points or 5 points, I think this team as a whole is okay with that .The BackcourtThe Lady Bears saw their per-game scoring out-put fall in 2010-11 as points scored were down across the league . However, the team returns a lot of firepower to an offense that still placed second in the Valley last year . Any conversation about the Lady Bears guards has to start with Garrison, who has earned the Lady Bears team MVP honor in each of her first three seasons . The 6-0 Garrison has wowed crowds at JQH Arena with her quickness and agil-ity, which has helped her become one of the best players in Missouri Valley Conference history . Shes certainly one of the best scorers in Missouri State history, needing 304 points to pass Kari Koch for second place on the Lady Bears career points list . But despite the accolades, Garrison has focused on the team concept since day one, Milleson said . Casey certainly came in at the right time to be a leader and help in the rebuilding . Special play-ers dont come around too often who have the ability as a freshman to come in and do what she did and continue to get better every year, Mille-

    Christiana Shorter

all-trades whose smarts and ties to the Springfield area will endear her to Lady Bears fans . Kenzie is another in a long line of Southwest Missouri kids . Shes very smart, has a very high basketball IQ, Milleson said . Im not sure that she does any one thing thats over-the-top and makes everybody go wow!, but she can do a little bit of everything . I look for Kenzie to contribute a lot this year and to be a big-time impact player when these seniors walk out the door .The FrontcourtMuch like its slew of returning guards, the Lady Bears bring back a strong core presence in the post . The teams size matches up well with other teams in the Valley . The clubs catalyst down low is junior forward Christiana Shorter, a 6-foot-1 native of Tulsa, Okla . A year ago as a sophomore, Shorter played a solid all-around game, finishing among the Valleys top 10 in defensive rebounds, offensive rebounds, field-goal percentage and blocked shots . Defending Shorter will be a tall order for opponents in 2011-12 . After being second-team all-conference last year, I think Chris is going to take another step, Milleson said . Shes really worked on her outside shooting and has built a more complete game . I think shes one of the best post players in the conference and could go down as one of the best in Lady Bear history . Two senior forwards also will return and see significant minutes in the Lady Bears lineup. The 6-foot-1 Boshe averaged about 12 minutes per game last season and was an efficient scorer, connecting on 48 percent of her total shots taken . Meanwhile, Soldner will be looked upon to be a physical force underneath the basket and continue to be a physical rebounder . Maintaining consistent production will be a point of improve-ment for both this year, Milleson said . Three additional contributors with high ceilings will play a pivotal role for Millesons squad this year . Forward Whitney Edie came on strong during the postseason for the Lady Bears, scoring 27 points and grabbing 15 rebounds in Missouri States two WNIT games . Such production could be a sign of what lies ahead for the talented Ex-eter, Mo ., product . If I had to pick one player I felt was maybe a true key to our success throughout a 30-35 game season, it would be Whitney Edie, Milleson said . Shes so skilled . Shes very physical and has a high basketball IQ . If we can just keep her healthy and get the quality minutes out of her, I think she and Christiana bring something as a tandem that not many Valley teams have . Staying healthy hasnt been easy for junior center Aly Stock . However, as the tallest player on the club, Stock brings a unique advantage when shes on the floor. Shes worked hard on her conditioning and agility, Milleson said, and has the ability to be a strong defensive presence for the Lady Bears . The final piece to the post puzzle for Missouri State is Bry Snow, a 6-1 sophomore forward . Snow sat out the 2010-11 season after transfer-ring from the University of Cincinnati on the heels of a standout prep career at Blue Springs (Mo .) High School . Milleson said Snow brings a lot of tal-ent, but will have to adjust to the rigors of playing basketball in the Valley . Snow brings a tremendous amount of ath-

After missing a semester trying to get back, its tough when youve had to sit and youve not been a part of the daily feel of the game atmospheres . Hannahs going to have to work hard to get back in the mix, Milleson said . She does bring her shooting ability and range that nobody else on our team has . Its just going to be Hannah getting back into the flow of the team concept after sit-ting for a semester . The Lady Bears also welcome two freshmen guards to the squad: Kenzie Williams from Mt . Vernon, Mo ., and NiJay Gaines from Des Moines, Iowa . Milleson said the pair has the potential to significantly impact the program by the time they reach their senior seasons . NiJay brings a wealth of success from the high school level and a tremendous amount of athleticism, Milleson said . Again, its going to be an adjustment to the Division I level in terms of discipline, running plays and understanding the schemes and those sort of things . But shes got a tremendous amount of upswing to her . Williams, on the other hand, is a 5-10 jack-of-

when the Lady Bears were fighting for positioning in the conference standings . The thing I really like about her right now is the leadership role shes assumed . By far, shes been the best in the weight room and in our conditioning drills, Milleson said . She has taken that and turned it into a leadership role, and her teammates have a tremendous amount of respect for her . Sophomores Desiree Phillips and Hannah Wilkerson could see more playing time as the season wears on. Phillips took the floor in just 16 games as a freshman last year, but is an incredibly hard worker in the gym, which Milleson said will pay off for her in time . Wilkerson only played 10 games before being ruled academically ineligible after the fall semester . However, Wilkerson improved her grades in the spring semester and earned a spot on the MVCs Academic Honor Roll . As the all-time leading scorer in the history of Missouri high school basketball (boys and girls), the Lady Bears see Wilkerson as an important piece to the teams offensive success this year .

leticism and physical strength to the game . Her biggest challenge is after sitting out a year, getting back into that basketball-everyday mindset, Milleson said . But if shes able to get over that hurdle, she certainly can help us out on the block on both ends of the floor.

The ScheduleThe Lady Bears will be challenged early and often in 2011-12, as three of the teams first four games will be played on the road . That includes contests at 2011 NCAA Tournament qualifiers Louisiana Tech (Nov . 11) and Kansas State (Nov . 18) sandwiched around the Nov . 13 home opener vs . Louisville, a Sweet 16 squad last spring that was picked to finish third in the powerful Big East Conference this season. The final leg of that swing will be a Nov . 26 afternoon game at WNIT quali-fier Oral Roberts in Tulsa. Missouri State will return home Nov . 29 to begin a two-game homestand with a contest against UALR, an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Tournament after winning the Sun Belt Confer-ence Tournament championship in 2011 . That will be followed by a Dec . 6 contest versus East Tennessee State . The Lady Bears will hit the road for a game with another BCS team, this time at Stillwater, Okla ., for a Dec . 8 game against Okla-homa State from the Big 12 Conference . Milleson said shes confident the teams non-conference schedule will provide a solid resume for postseason play . I think our non-conference schedule is going to take care of itself because its very tough, very demanding, Milleson said . For sure well play one Top-25 team, maybe two . I think well play three or four BCS schools . So the non-conference schedule will be demanding . The State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament will once again be held at The Family Arena in St . Charles, Mo . from March 8-11, 2012 .The ValleyFor the second year in a row, the Lady Bears were picked to win the Valley in the leagues preseason poll. After finishing strong in the seasons final weeks just to move into a three-team tie for sec-ond place a year ago, Missouri State will be taking nothing for granted this season . Winning the Val-ley is the teams primary goal, but with a number of high-quality teams in the conference, that road will be a difficult one. I think the goals and expectations are going to help us keep focused, but its going to be tough, Milleson said . I think from top to bottom its going to be about who can steal a win or two on the road . Youre not going to be able to have bad losses and win the conference championship . Led by fifth-year head coach Tanya Warren, UNI is coming off a season in which they nearly ran the table in Valley play, posting a 17-1 mark against MVC opponents . However, the leagues two-time defending MVC Tournament champion suffered a major blow when 2011 league MVP Jacqui Kalin tore her ACL in September and will be forced to miss the entire season . Still, the team returns five letterwinners, including senior guards K .K . Armstrong, Katelin Oney and Rachel Madrigal . After finishing in the middle of the Valley pack a season ago and earning a bid to the WNIT, Wichita State returns preseason all-conference selection Haleigh Lankster to a deep, athletic and

    SeaSon outlook

    Jasmine Malone

Karly Buerexperienced roster . Much like Missouri State a few years ago, the Shockers have seen a group of young players grow into solid contributors as upperclassmen . Always a contender in the Valley, the Creighton Bluejays have a bright future ahead of them after finishing in the three-team tie for second place with MSU and Illinois State in 2010-11 . Despite seeing its run of three consecutive 20-win seasons come to an end last year, head coach Jim Flanery and the Bluejays welcome back 2011 MVC Fresh-man of the Year Carli Tritz, who was named to the preseason all-conference team . The squads only senior, forward DaNae Moore, posted career highs in points, rebounds, assists and steals last season . Indiana States attack will again be keyed by senior center Shannon Thomas, the schools all-time leader in blocked shots . Standing at 6-foot-4, Thomas was a preseason all-conference selection . Also returning is senior guard Brittany Schoen, who set the schools single-season record for made 3-pointers last season . Another key component will be junior guard Taylor Whitley, a member of the 2010-11 MVC All-Tournament Team . After winning at least a share of the MVC regu-lar-season title three straight years, Illinois State overcame a number of obstacles to surprise the league with a second-place finish a year ago. The Redbirds made the postseason WNIT by finishing 24-11 overall and 12-6 in conference play under first-year head coach Stephanie Glance. How-ever, this years team will once again be forced to reload after the loss of several key seniors to graduation . Returning to lead the Redbirds is senior guard Katie Broadway, who connected on 82 percent of her free throws last year to lead the team . Drake returns eight letterwinners to a veteran squad that will look to improve on a 15-15 overall record and 9-9 record in conference play . That mission will be spearheaded by 6-3 senior for-ward Rachael Hackbarth, who a year ago finished fourth in the MVC in points per game and third in rebounds per game for head coach Amy Stephens club . Coming off a season in which they finished 7-11 in conference play, Bradley might be one of the deepest squads in the conference . Head coach Paula Buscher will look to junior guard Katie Yohn and sophomore guard Catie OLeary, a transfer from Wisconsin, to help the team from the perimeter . Evansville and Southern Illinois both struggled last season en route to ninth- and 10th-place finishes, respectively. The Purple Aces are set to open The Ford Center, their new downtown arena this season under first-year head coach Oties Epps . Evansville returns their leading scorer, Briyana Blair . Meanwhile, the Salukis of Southern Illinois will look to step up from their 0-18 conference finish from a year ago. Head coach Missy Tiber will once again have a young squad with only one junior and one senior on the roster . However, a slew of sophomores including 6-3 center CiCi Shannon give SIU a chance to improve their standing in 2011-12 .

With a $30 million gift from Mis-souri State alumnus and Spring-field, Mo.-based hotel developer John Q Hammons, the long-time dream of a new home for the Missouri State Bears and Lady Bears and an iconic tribute to MSU intercollegiate athletics has become a reality . JQH Arena features a seating capacity of 11,000 - including 50 courtside seats - the Grand Entrance, 24 suites, PRIME Overtime Club and other amenities . The design also includes shell space for home locker rooms, offices and a training room, which can be completed at a later date . For now, the cur-rent Hammons Student Center facilities will be used for these functions, with a connect-ing corridor to JQH Arena . JQH Arena has already had a profound im-pact on the Bears and Lady Bears recruiting efforts, putting the MSU basketball facilities on par with the top Division I schools in the country . The arena is a premier basketball facility that will continue to give Missouri State an overwhelm-ing home-court advantage, making the Bears and Lady Bears games the place to be in Springfield.

Turner Family Practice Court Just before construction began in December of 2006 on JQH Arena, the Missouri State mens and womens basketball programs received a head start on their facility upgrades with the completion of a new practice area in the east gym of Hammons Student Center, the Turner Family Practice Court. Turner Court has long been on the wish list of the MSU coaching staffs to ease the tight practice schedule for the two basketball teams and MSU volleyball in the main arena of HSC . The east gym underwent extensive renovations, including the installation of new lighting, wall covering and side goals, as well as the addition of the hardwood floor that was in use in HSCs main arena from 1985 until February of 2006 . The Lady Bears of coaches Valerie Goodwin-Colbert, Cheryl Burnett and Katie Abrahamson-Henderson put 15 postseason teams on the old floor, including 13 NCAA teams and two WNIT squads, and compiled a cumulative record of 261-57 ( .820) while it was in use in Ham-mons .
