2011-12 Season PreviewThe 2011-12 season will mark the beginning of a new era in

the history of High Point University women’s basketball as new head coach Jennifer Hoover takes the reins of the Panther pro-gram. Hoover will guide a different looking Panther squad from the previous few seasons following the graduation of five seniors who combined to start 431 games, score 4,989 points, grab 2,141 rebounds, dish out 1,289 assists and block 373 shots.

Hoover will step in as head coach this season after serving as an assistant coach on several successful programs around NCAA women’s basketball. Most recently, Hoover worked as the lead assistant for the University of California under Joanne Boyle. Hoover helped lead the Golden Bears to their first NCAA Sweet 16 appearance and helped sign two top-10 recruiting classes.

Senior Shamia Brown returns to lead HPU after finish-ing first on the team with 12.6 points per game in 2010-11. The forward scored in double-digits in 24 games and averaged 13.3 points per game in conference play. She is one of the top returning scorers in the conference and has been named to the preseason All-Big South team.

Two part-time starters who are expected to step into the starting lineup full time along with Brown are junior guard Erin Reynolds and sophomore center Cheyenne Parker. Reynolds has appeared in 62 games with six starts in her first two years at High Point. Last season, Reynolds finished fourth on the team with 8.7 points per game and second in assists with 2.5 per game. Parker was named Big South Freshman of the Week a record seven times and led HPU in rebounding with eight per game.

Brown, Reynolds and Parker will form the core of a new-look HPU squad in the coming season that features only six players who saw the floor last season.

“There is an anxious excitement around the team as we prepare to head into practice,” Hoover said. “It has been reward-ing so far seeing kids come in day in and day out and just get to work. Some of the younger players understand that with the

new staff it is a new leaf so everyone has come in with the mentality to do every-thing above and beyond. It has been a very competitive preseason as everyone understands they have a chance to see a lot of minutes. This is a young group that is eager to learn.”

The Panthers have been selected second in the Big South Preseason Poll behind only returning Regular Season Champion Liberty.

High Point will play a challenging schedule this season including a rematch with VCU out of the Colonial and four games against programs from BCS conferences.

BACKCOURT

With the graduation of four senior stalwarts, High Point’s backcourt will feature several new faces in 2011-12.

Reynolds will take over at the point in the upcoming season and will provide the leadership and experience in the back court. An explosive guard with a good shooting touch, Reynolds has terrorized

opposing defenses off the bench in her first two seasons including a career-high 20-point day at No. 10 West Virginia last season. The Beckley, W.Va., native is also a ferocious on-ball defender who will spearhead HPU’s pressure defense.

“We will rely heavily on Erin as our lone player in the group with extensive experience,” Hoover said. “She has become a leader on the floor for us and really helps coach the younger kids. Erin is very good with the basketball in her hands and has shown the ability to make the right decisions.”

Three players will see time behind Reynolds this season in sophomore Tayler Tremblay and freshmen Ashante Richard and Lexi Patterson.

Tremblay appeared in 22 games for the Panthers last season, averaging 2.5 point per game in a little less than seven minutes. The diminutive guard is very skilled at creating her own shot off the dribble with a dangerous pull-up jumper.

“Tayler is a very smart player that knows how to get her shot off,” Hoover said. “She has very good handle and can beat a player off the dribble. She has seen some action and is one of the few players with playing experience.”

Richard was named one of the top-50 point guard recruits in the country by HoopGurlz and comes to HPU after a suc-cessful prep career at Northern High School in Durham, N.C. She averaged 14 points, 3.2 steals and 2.8 assists per game in her four-year career.

“Ashante Richard has been very impressive in preseason workouts and has really pushed Erin,” Hoover said. “She will bring a lot to this team on the defensive end with her quickness and anticipation.”

Patterson played her senior season at Oak Hill Academy after three seasons at Salem High School. She helped guide Oak Hill to a No. 7 ranking in the East Region by ESPN Rise.

“Lexi Patterson is a player that can do a little bit of every-thing and could be a good player as a combo guard.,” Hoover said. “The challenge for her will be getting used to the intensity level college basketball requires.”

Junior Laura Whitt is the lone returner at the wing posi-tion and she will be pushed by a talented group of newcomers

jockeying for playing time. Whitt played in 27 games for the Panthers in 2010-11,

averaging almost 11 minutes per game. She is a strong guard with good size who will help fill some of the rebounding void left by Dodd.

“Laura has been a pleasant surprise,” Hoover said. “She has tremendous basketball IQ. She is a good catch and shoot player who can shoot from range.”

Three returners who did not see playing time last season will be expected to contribute this season in Carter Williams, Lindsey Puckett and Taylor Wimbish.

Williams is a 5-5 guard who is a skilled shooter and passer. During her prep career, Williams was an All-State player in Virginia in 2008 and scored over 1,000 career points. She finished second in assists, third in steals and fourth in points in the Spotswood High School record book.

“Carter is one of our more consistent three-point shooters,” Hoover said. “She didn’t play last season, but gained the experi-ence of being around the program. She has a great understanding of the game and will be a sort of coach on the floor.”

Puckett is another taller guard who will be looked upon to provide both scoring from the outside and rebounding this season. She scored 1,289 points in her high school career and was a three-time All-Rockingham County player.

“Lindsey has the potential to be a very good catch and shoot player for us,” Hoover said. “She is coming back from foot surgery last year and has done a great job with conditioning to get herself back to where she needs to be.”

Wimbish walked onto the team last season and after a year on the bench will see time on the floor in her second season. She is an aggressive defender with very good speed who will contribute to High Point’s defensive play.

“Taylor is a player that wants to win at everything no matter what we are doing,” Hoover said. “She goes as hard as anybody on the floor. She will help us on the defensive end with her ability to pressure the ball. She has the heart of a lion and plays with as much intensity as anyone.”

Two freshmen who will compete for playing time in their first season are Hallie Gunnoe and Leslie Mack who both come to High Point from Summers County High School in West Virginia where they won four-straight state titles and had a state record 96-game win streak.

Gunnoe was the runner up for West Virginia State Player of the Year as a junior. She is the leading scorer in Summers County High School history with 1,740 points and set the school record with 478 steals.

“Hallie has a toughness about her that is just a quiet tough-ness,” Hoover said. “She has an ability to pick things up quickly. She has the ability to shoot the 15-foot jumper and will provide some scoring this season.”

Mack finished behind only Gunnoe in the Summers County record book with 1,682 career points and set a school record with 203 career three pointers.

“Leslie comes from the same high school program as Hallie and is a three-point shooter that should help us from the outside this season,” Hoover said. “She is a pure shooter that should be able to bury the open looks she is given.”

FRONTCOURT

The Panthers’ front court will play a much larger role in the High Point attack this season with the return of Brown and Parker in the post. The two will be joined by returner Jazmin

Cromartie as well as transfer Kamille Lisonbee and freshman Hanna Gunnoe to form a talented crop of frontcourt players.

Brown has been one of High Point’s best players over the past two seasons and enters 2011-12 as the unquestioned leader of the Panthers. In just three seasons, she has already eclipsed both 1,000 points and 500 rebounds and looks to be a double-double threat in any game.

“Shamia is one of the most athletic players in the confer-ence,” Hoover said. “She has a great first step and has continued to develop her face the basket game. She was less of a vocal leader in the past with such a big class above her but since they have moved on she has really embraced the role.”

Cromartie played in 24 games with one start last season, averaging 1.7 points and 1.6 rebounds per game in just 8.3 minutes of action a night. Her athleticism and ability to grab rebounds will be key for High Point this season.

“Jazmin is incredibly athletic,” Hoover said. “She is beast on the boards and we have talked to her about being a Den-nis Rodman type player for us. She has really worked at her athleticism and conditioning and is now a player that can beat forwards down the court which will be an added dimension to her game.”

Gunnoe is the third player to come to HPU this season from Summers County High School in West Virginia. A more physical player who spent her time in the post, Gunnoe aver-aged a double-double (13 points and 10 rebounds) in her senior season and finished with 945 career points and 670 career rebounds.

“Hanna is a fundamental face up player,” Hoover said. “She has a great understanding of the game. She is a good high-post jump shooter and will help balance out Shamia and Jazmin.”

Parker finished the 2010-11 season as part of the Big South All-Freshman team and was third on the team in scoring during conference play. She had four double-doubles on the season, including a 21-point, 16-rebound game against UNC Asheville. Parker has outstanding length which allowed her to block 75 shots, second most in the Big South last season.

“Cheyenne’s ability to score is as good as anybody’s,” Hoover said. “She is a versatile player that can play with her back to the basket or facing a defender. We are looking for more consistency from her in her second season. She has the ability to record a double-double every night.”

Kamille Lisonbee will play behind Parker this season after sitting last year due to transferring from Marshall. At 6-7, Lisonbee is one of the tallest players in the Big South and her height should supply some beneficial mismatches in the post that will help HPU on both ends of the floor.

“Kamille brings an element to this team that not everybody has,” Hoover said. “She has the ability to score on the low blocks and good hands that will al-low her to catch and score. She has been working hard at keeping the ball high. With her size she will also help us a great deal on the boards.” Erin Reynolds

Jennifer HooverHead Coach • Alma Mater: Wake Forest ’91 • First season at HPU: 2011-12

Jennifer Hoover was named head women’s basketball coach at High Point University in April of 2011. Hoover was most recently the top assistant coach at Cali-fornia for three seasons, where she helped guide the Golden Bears to an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance and helped sign the nation’s No. 1 recruiting class.

Hoover’s assistant coaching career began in 1994 and includes stints at Cal, Virginia and Memphis. In three seasons as assistant at Cal, Hoover helped lead the Bears to a cumulative record of 69-36, its first-ever NCAA Sweet Sixteen in 2009 and the 2010 Women’s NIT Championship. Prior to Cal, Hoover was associate head coach at Memphis, helping the team to more wins in 2007-08 than the previous two seasons combined. She spent four seasons at the University of Virginia, the final two as re-cruiting coordinator.

A post player herself, Hoover has an im-pressive reputation for developing forwards at the highest level. Hoover was named one of the ACC’s top-50 all-time players and is still Wake Forest’s all-time leader in scoring and rebounding. She is the only Wake For-est player to surpass 1,000 career points and rebounds and was inducted to the school’s Hall of Fame in 2002. Among the post play-ers Hoover coached at Cal were All-Ameri-cans Ashley Walker and Devanei Hampton as well as All-Freshman selections DeNesha Stallworth and Gennifer Brandon.

At Cal, Hoover worked with all aspects of the program, including on-court coach-ing, recruiting and scouting and helped the Golden Bears to postseason appearances in all three of her seasons. She helped bring in back-to-back top 10 recruiting classes, including the No. 1 class in 2009.

Hoover went to Berkeley after spending the 2007-08 season as the associate head coach at Memphis and helped the Tigers make significant improvements in her one season.

After her first stint as an assistant coach at Memphis in 2002-03, Hoover spent four seasons at the University of Virginia and became the Cavaliers’ recruiting coor-dinator for her final two years. She helped sign top-15 recruiting classes in 2005 and 2006 and helped the team to two 20-win seasons, an NCAA appearance and two WNIT berths. She helped Virginia ink junior college All-American center Aisha Mohammed and the 2006-07 ACC Rookie of the Year, Monica Wright. Wright also was a McDonald’s All-American. While at Virginia, Hoover coached under Hall of Famer Debbie Ryan.

Hoover started her coaching career at the University of Missouri-Kansas City from 1994-96, then became an assistant at Virginia Commonwealth for two seasons (1996-98). She then spent two seasons at East Carolina (1998-00) before moving on to James Madison (2000-02), where she helped the Dukes to the WNIT Final Four.

Hoover then made her first stop at Memphis in 2002-03, where she recruited and coached the Lady Tigers’ post players. She also oversaw academics and the mentor program until she left in August of 2003 to join Ryan’s staff at Virginia.

As a player, Hoover was a three-time All-ACC selection at Wake Forest and still holds the Wake Forest career records for points (1,728) and rebounds (1,006). She was also a member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll and was a member of the South

team that won the bronze medal at the 1989 Olympic Festival in Oklahoma City, Okla. She helped Wake Forest to the second round of the 1988 NCAA Tournament. Hoover graduated from Wake Forest in 1991 with a degree in communications.

Following her collegiate playing career (1987-91), Hoover played professionally overseas for the Solna IF Basketball Team in Stockholm, Sweden, from 1991-92. She played the 1993 season with Athletes in Ac-tion on the USA Fall Exhibition Tour and the Australian spring tour before starting her coaching career.

Hoover married her husband, John, in 2001 and the two have one daughter, Maggie.
