The International Edible Book Festival began in 1999 as a Thanksgiving Day joke among a group of artists, and it has become aninternational event in over 23 countries and 18 states nationally, including Boulder. This ephemeral global banquet, also sharedon the internet, allows everyone to discover unique bookish nourishments. It is a celebration of the ingestion of culture and a wayto concretely share a book; it is also a deeper reflection on our attachment to food. The idea is simple, if wacky: each year aroundApril Fools Day, the birthday of gastronome Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin (1755-1826), whose famous quote is Tell me what youeat, and I will tell you what you are, artists of all ages and abilities construct books out of edible materials, display them, then
consume them at tea-time. This event unites bibliophiles, book artists, and food lovers in a feast for the eyes and palate.
