As globalization continues to change the way one nation relates to another, the implica-tions for reaching individuals in other parts of the world with the good news of Jesus must be re-examined and adjusted. While we tend to think of church planting as the best way of reaching lost people here in America, that strategy is not always possible in other parts of the world. The Assemblies of God has long held to what is called the “Indigenous Church Principle” i.e. self-governing, self-propagating, and self-supporting. Many nations around the world make it politically impossible to plant a conventional church the way we think of it here in our country. Yet, the Church is growing in some rather unconventional ways. Omar Beiler helped us at our last Ministers’ Enrichment to understand the need to transition our thinking from closed countries to limited ac-cess countries to creative access countries. He stated “We are praying the Lord will call people of talent with hearts of apostles.” If we limit our thinking to sending people to other nations who have only ministerial skills (as important as those skills are), we fall into the box of ministry that just looks like our local church rather than allowing God to develop ministry that may appear very different from our local model.

The creative approach we are taking to assist the Assemblies of God of India provides an opportunity to partner with the local spiritual authorities who are targeting unreached people in their nation. Together we dream of establishing a strong ministry in the state of Rajasthan where over 55 million people live with fewer than three hundred known followers of Jesus. This ground-breaking endeavor will require faith, passion, finances, and personnel to be mobilized in targeting this land where so few believers currently exist. During the next few months you will hear more of the vision to reach these pre-cious people who are in bondage of darkness and in need of the Savior. Together we can make a difference as we intercede for their souls, contribute of our finances, and work toward the establishment of the Kingdom of God in this needy land.

We are better together!

Strategic Partnership

RajasthanThis is God’s hour for India! Ten thousand people are being saved every day in India! India is in a position to become a major force in the world in this decade, and God has opened a window of opportunity for the church to make a difference. Bordering Paki-stan, Rajasthan is the largest state of India in terms of area. It has a population of 56 million but less than 2% are followers of Jesus. The churches of PennDel network are entering into a partnership with the All India General Superintendent, David Mohan, for “Cutting the new Frontier” in Rajasthan.

The partnership is one to “preach the Gospel where it is not being preached” and to “plant the church where it does not exist.” How can this happen? David and nancy Cawston are working with Joey and Carla Ellis and a new team of missionaries that are stationed in Jaipur, capitol of Rajisthan. They will assist Presbyter/Pastor Rajnish Jacob in building a solid foundation for the expansion of the gospel into the least-reached areas of the state.

“Cutting the New Frontier”

Rajasthan Institute of theology:The Rajasthan Institute of Theology (RIT) has a brief history of

preparing young men and women for ministry. RIT currently

functions in cooperation with Cornerstone Church. until novem-

ber 2009, the institute was operating out of a house with severe

limitations. In December they were able to relocate into rented

facilities with the opportunity to purchase the property. The prop-

erty was a former school that has great potential for expansion.

Classrooms and dormitory space can be used to accommodate

the student population. Presently, there are 16 students, 4 faculty

members, and 1 part-time faculty. Expansion of the facilities could

provide educational opportunity for 100 or more students.

Cornerstone Church:Pastor Rajnish has, with God’s help, established

Cornerstone Church. This is a church of 300

new believers that meet in a private school

auditorium. Cornerstone built church plant-

ing into their DnA. They have a vision to plant

churches in every major city in Rajasthan and to

use these churches as outreach centers for the

surrounding areas. The churches and pastors

face constant harassment and challenges from

the local neighborhood where they meet for

worship. A permanent facility for Cornerstone

will enable them to freely worship, aggressive-

ly plant new churches, and effectively develop

leaders to advance the gospel. The believers

are already raising their own local funds for

the purchase of land.

Page 5: 2010q1

Connexions winter 2010 5

2010-2011 Challenge:The pastors and churches of PennDel

network can enter into partnership with

the Rajasthan church. Our network goal

is to provide $500,000 in funding to do

the following:

w Assist Pastor Rajnish Jacob with the

construction of Cornerstone Church

w Purchase the Rajasthan Institute of

Theology rental property to train

church planters

w Establish at least 10 new churches

in the state of Rajasthan

Church Building Opportunities:There are 10 young men that have

stepped out in faith to plant a church.

Eight of the churches are functioning

in homes. Two churches are just being

opened. These pastors have already be-

gun to reach people, 450 have become

followers of Jesus.

the Rajasthan Vision:Pastor Rajnish Jacob and the missionary team believe the

Lord has called them to plant 1,800 churches in the next 15

years! Strategy: If every church plants a church every 3 years

and if the Bible College graduates each plant 2 churches

after they graduate, they can reach their goal. Their goal is

not just churches. Their real goal is changed lives! They want

to see people transformed from the kingdom of darkness to

the kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ.

About Those ‘Other’ Indians

PAuL E. GRABILL, D.MIn.

Assistant Superintendent

[email protected]

Many of us grew up watching television shows featuring cowboys (like the Lone Ranger) and, well, you know.

Sometimes when I’m forced to prove to someone that a deeply flawed idea can sink so deeply into our minds that we can’t seem to get it out regardless of the obvious facts before us, I simply point out that many of us, over 500 years after Columbus’ honest confusion, still call native Americans “Indians.”

That’s something to think about when we attempt to introduce someone to Jesus whose cultural reli-gion and tradition is older than Christianity, like is Hinduism in India. Historically, it’s been harder than reaching, say, a Mormon or a Yankees fan.:)

Yet India is one of the most exciting places on the planet right now—spiritually as well as economically. With a population just under 1 billion, right now there’s an unprecedented openness to the gospel in India. I had the opportunity to witness it myself last year, preaching in one church that is baptizing 200 converts a week.

now is the time to seize the day.

A few years ago, the Assemblies of God in India (which presently numbers about

7,000 congregations), set a goal to plant another 25,000 congregations by 2025.

Yes, there is unprecedented opportunity to not only see huge Kingdom expansion within this strategic nation, but to move into particularly difficult and unreached portions of north India, such as the Rajasthan province.

Oh, and I think we need to ask ourselves a ques-tion here as well. If the Indian Assemblies of God could conceivably grow from approximately 7,000 to 32,000 congregations in a decade and a half, why couldn’t the u.S. Assemblies of God grow at the same rate, or even half that rate? After all, the Gospel should work here the same as there, shouldn’t it? Same Christ, same Holy Spirit, same gospel. no?

Maybe, just maybe, we have some wrong stuff stuck in our minds about some of the core new Testament Gospel values, including our passion for Christ, our passion for the lost, our abandonment of personal priorities, our commitment to a life of prayer, and our readiness to repent when we displease the Lord or dishonor His name in any way.

And maybe, just maybe, the secret for such a Kingdom surge in the u.S. is more than a silver bullet can solve.

has spent the last 41 years in

ministry as missionaries, pas-

tors, and church planters. their

background spans the globe

serving in many different roles;

Director of teen Challenge,

Senior Pastors of international

and most recently Christian Life

vania. David and nancy were

world Missionaries assigned to

serve india.

There is perhaps no more challenging missions project in the world today than to open

an unreached area to the Gospel! That is the challenge of the PennDel Missions project

for 2010-2011. We are joining with the General Council of the Assemblies of God of India

and Eurasia Division of Assemblies of God World Missions along with missionaries Joel

and Carla Ellis to cut a new frontier in the state of Rajasthan, India. Rajasthan is the larg-

est state of India in area and parallels the border with Pakistan. It has a population of 55

million people: 88% Hindu; 8% Muslims; 1% Sikhs; 1% Jains and less than a few thousand

Christian believers. Rajasthan means “the land of the kings” and historically was the home

of the great maharajahs. The capital city Jaipur of 4.5 million is a bustling center of com-

merce and the gateway to all of India.

Several years ago Pastor Rajnish Jacob went from south India to Jaipur with the blessing of

the A/G India to establish a foot hold for the gospel. Today Cornerstone Church now has a

congregation of 300 meeting in a school. He also developed a Bible School which has been

meeting in a rented house. Also, several other pastors have responded to the call of God to

establish churches in unreached areas of Rajasthan. In India when a church has no build-

ing of its own, it is not seen as viable and is often targeted for persecution. It is our goal

to partner with our Indian brothers and help establish the church in this region of India

by building an Evangelistic Center, Cornerstone Church, in Jaipur. Building a Bible school

to train Rajasthanis to reach their state and building at least 10 new churches throughout

the state of Rajasthan. Henry Blackaby said, “Find out what God is doing and blessing and

then put your investment there.”

Notes From Our Missionaries:Sir Lanka — Dwight Dobson reports the war is over in Sir Lanka and the Bible College is making incredible progress with God’s help. An addition to their facilities is under construction to enlarge the library, provide seating for 550 in chapel, and 4 new classrooms to accommodate a growing student enrollment.

Africa — Pat Mahar states numerous church structures have been built throughout the country and a building for their Orphan Care Project is ready for construction. A food distri-bution by Convoy of Hope through 5 churches and communities was able to feed more than 400 families. Spiritually, countless numbers of people have committed their lives to Christ and have experienced the Spirit’s baptism.

Mexico — Art Stoneking writes that a ground breaking service was held for the new children’s home in Tijuana plus a number of churches are working their way through construction projects. Thank you for your help in construction and feeding projects.

Ecuador — Doug Baldwin has completed a shortened itineration and has returned to Machala. He reports the church has grown to 450 people, and they are looking for ways to provide additional space for their growing congregation.

India – Arlene Stubbs is continuing her mission in Hyderabad. The church continues to grow and offer numerous ministries. The church has added live streaming of their services at www.newlifeag.in.

Bolivia — Steve Potutschnig reports on the growth of Light and Truth School to include an enrollment of 1200 students. Three graduates of the 2010 class have responded to God’s call and will enter full-time ministry. The school came in 1st place overall in the national Science and Technological Exposition.

Caribbean — Sam Mayeski has planned new church evangelism in the Bahamas, Grand Cayman, St Lucia and Trinidad island nations. Clinics and seminars are scheduled to teach and train national workers for disaster response and HIv/Aids awareness.

Edward and Faith Ferguson are retiring after 42 years of missionary service with the Assemblies of God. Their missionary work included church planting in Ghana, Africa; ICI, Teen Challenge, founding an English speaking church in The netherlands, and served as the ICI International Director of Development. The last half of their ministry has been dedicated to working with military personnel serving overseas. They pastored the neighborhood Assembly of God Military Church in Okinawa, Japan, served the Asia/Pacific Region as Military Coordinator, and planted another church near the Marine Air Base in Iwakuni. During their years in Okinawa, 2,500 people became a part of their congregation and some have responded to God’s call to become pastors and missionaries.

Since 2005 they have served in the Kaiserslautern area of Germany. This was at a critical time as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were directing many wounded veterans through the military medical centers, coming from the battlefields and being transferred to the uS for further treatment. They have also pastored a military church with ministry to nearly 500 people, many of whom served in the war zones. Ed and Faith are returning to reside stateside and transition to the Assemblies of God uS Missions Military Office where they will minister God’s love to the military families and veterans of the wars. They express their deepest gratitude for your faithful prayer and financial support as they lived out God’s call to missions.

Scotty is a nationally recognized youth communicator with a passion for reaching students and equipping leaders.

Worth Dying For is from Modesto, California. Their self-titled debut album was released on April 15, 2008 by Integrity Music. Integrity Music, who signed Worth Dying For, told web-based magazine Christian Music Daily, “In a day when most new bands are anything but original, Worth Dying For is an exception; This band is writing great new songs, and their sound is fresh and original. Birthed out of a church with a desire to reach their generation for Christ, Worth Dying For is focused on the right stuff. It's refreshing and contagious.”

We are so thrilled that you would consider bringing your youth minstry to Youth Convention 2010 - “NEXT”. Last year thousands of students had the time of their life. There is nothing like an arena full of teenagers seeking, desiring, and being challenged to make the right choice in life.

We as youth leaders and pastors have a difficult challenge in reaching a generation with the truth about Christ’s NEXT step for their life. I invite you, your entire youth group, and all of their friends to join us in an event that will impact their lives forever.

Church Plant Areas for 2010LEWISBURG, PENNYSLVANIAThis charming little town along the Susquehanna River is a crossroads community, minutes away from farms, mountains, trout fishing and just an hour north of Harrisburg. It has beautifully kept historic buildings and a downtown with great restaurants, galleries and lots of fun places to shop. It is a great place to hike, bike, kayak and fish, or sit back and catch the July 4th parade.

The Lewisburg Area School District is ranked in the top 10 percent in the state and Lewisburg is home to Bucknell university with 3,400 undergraduate students that come from all 50 states, and from more than 50 countries.

It is the county seat and a great place to plant a church. If you are interested in finding out more, email Jonathan Baker at [email protected].

CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, PENNSYLVANIACranberry Township, located in venango County, is home to the area’s regional hospital, uPMC northwest and is the hub of shopping, dining and entertainment for the local area. It has experienced tremendous economic growth in the last 30 years.

Morrison Park features the annual Cranberry Festival and the Samuel Justus Trail is used for walking, jogging, bicycling, roller blading, hiking and horseback riding. The view is beautiful and over 100,000 people use it a year.

Presbyter Ken Martin ([email protected]) and Presbyter Chris Clark ([email protected]) have both expressed a desire to see a church planted in Cranberry Township.

BETHANY BEACH, DELAWAREAs you drive south on Route 1 to the corner of Delaware, the beach houses

get increasingly larger and the air notably quieter. A giant carving depicting

a nanticoke Indian chief appears before you as you enter Bethany Beach and

then it hits you—you’re in beach suburbia. Bethany Beach is peaceful and

relaxing. Walk the boardwalk, stroll the tree-lined streets or get a bushel of

crabs and spread out some newspapers on the deck for a full blown feast.

Coastal beach towns like Bethany Beach were well-kept secrets until AARP

rated Rehoboth Beach one of the Top Ten Places to Retire. now this area is

We are several weeks into the new Year. How many new Year’s resolutions have bit the dust so far? new habits can be difficult to establish. This year, make a resolution, start a new habit based on God’s heart, the great commission; go and make disciples.

Making disciples is not an easy task. Just as there are many learning styles, there are many ways people are discipled. One of the most effective is becoming a discipling friend. Taking the time to invest in a new believer is very rewarding; taking time to invest in a new friend is life changing. Every church has new believers who need you! We want to give you the confidence and tools to be that discipling friend.

Our network is privileged to host Jim Hall, nationally appointed home missionary to disciple makers. Jim is the author of the Harvester’s Handbook. We will be traveling throughout Pennsylvania and Delaware during May 14 to 18 equipping ordinary people into disciple makers.

Consider being a part of your church’s disciple making team. We are still working out the details; check our website for a schedule (penndel.org/ce).

Remember, Jesus spent 3 years investing in 12 men, 11 completed the course and changed the world. Is there a world changer in your church just waiting for you?

New Year, New Disciples

Become a Disciple-Maker

Go and make disciples of all nations… Matthew 28:19

You will be ready to disciple new Christians and help them mature in their walk with Jesus. In turn, those newly-matured Christians will be ready to repeat the process.

James Hall will explain the discipling process and give you the confidence to fulfill the Great Commission, “Go and make disciples of all nations… Matthew 28:19.”

Learn how to mentor others through friend-ship and informal one-to-one coaching.

Jim is the founder and national Director of urban Bible Training Centers — impacting over 40 cities nationwide, with enrollments of up to 1,000 students.

Being the Dad of three young ones I’ve watched a phenomenon take place in each one of their lives. They came into the world and immediately they took the fake milk formula we called their food. Like clockwork they would crave it, and they would enjoy it on many occasions. As they became older, we began to serve them some dif-ferent flavors. Our middle child Jalyn was espe-cially hooked. The moment she had apple juice she didn’t go back. The sweat taste changed everything for her. It was a moment that moved her into a whole new experience. The milk was no longer satisfying; she wanted something more.

I relate missions to that moment that changes everything. When you travel to see the culture and conditions of some people, it opens your eyes to a whole new experience that does not

allow you to live life the same way. You can’t go back to the same thing, the ordinary or common. Life takes on new meaning when you see the world and what God is doing in it. What were once identified as problems in your common, ordinary world are no longer problems and what seemed to be important takes a few seats back to other things. It truly changes everything.

We want to provide you with an opportunity to experience this new perspective. Maybe you have, and you’d like to experience it again. We encourage you to pray and ask God what He might have in store for you this summer. We will be leading two PennDel AIM teams from the network and we invite you to join us. Bring your youth group or just yourself. We believe it will be a life altering moment that will change everything.

GREG SCOTT Royal Rangers

In March of last year Robert Berdine, our District Outreach Coordinator, was privileged to be part of a team of fellow instructor trainers to travel to Jamaica on a training missions trip. He and four com-manders from the north Texas District, along with Matt Kling, RRI Director of Op-erations, headed to the island of Jamaica for an intense week-long training event.

The leadership of the Jamaican church welcomed them with open arms as the country is in desperate need for a ministry to mold their boys and young men into the leaders of their homes and churches.

Many boys in Jamaica have been aban-doned by their fathers and grow up without any Christian mentoring. This is something the church hopes to provide through proper training of leaders in the Royal Ranger ministry. Training is some-thing that Royal Rangers is known for worldwide.

The classes that were taught during the week qualified the leaders to teach in their respective churches. Each earned their LMA (Leaders Medal of Achieve-ment) at the end of the week.

Some of the classes taught were Ranger Fundamentals, Discipleship, Outpost Council, Age Specific Activities, Royal Ranger Curriculum, and Safety in the Church.

The leaders also learned about working in patrols and the importance of Fun and EXCITInG meeting times with their boys.

There were 56 leaders present for the training and, as a result, we expect to see great things happening in Jamaica.

In addition to performing training, the Penn-Del District Royal Rangers has sent numerous Pathfinder teams around the world to build churches for missionaries in remote areas in order to help evangelize the world. Pathfinder Teams have gone to such places as Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, Dominican Republic, Panama, Peru, China and many more to help support our mis-sionaries and Royal Rangers International.

“Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” Hebrews 12:1b

It is with perseverance that the race is won, that the battle is victorious. While I love a great battle story, the truth of the matter is, most wars are won in the everyday mundane.

With constant and persistent pressure, a waterfall cuts into hard rock. The steady blowing of the wind pushes a kite high into the sky. And the unre-lenting tapping of the woodpecker breaks through the toughest bark.

As we live for Christ, our persistence and unrelenting testimony will win more for Jesus than our sporadic bursts of zeal in witnessing. Consistency, perseverance, faithfulness. Good words for this year.
