Hartley Greens manufactures traditional English Creamware in the same manner used since the eighteenth century. Earthenware forms are

slipcast and then joined with characteristic hand-twisted handles. A pierced design is then cut by hand using a simple metal tool for each

shape of hole. Lids are topped with the Tudor Rose, and after firing a creamy liquid glaze finishes the product.

Dollond Portable SundialOur wooden-boxed brass sundial is a completely self-contained

portable instrument, inspired by a design from the 18th-century instrument maker Peter Dollond. The original is in the London Science Museum.

Instruments like this were once usedby explorers and navigators to tell the

time anywhere in the world. For this tobe possible, the gnomon, which casts the

shadow, can be set for latitude on a slidingscale and the whole instrument oriented for

direction by means of a magnetic compass inthe base. A spirit level and height-adjustable

legs ensure that the instrument is used upright. The Sundial is3.5" dia., and comes in a wooden box with brass fittings

measuring 4" square, 2.5" tall.
