Contemplation on Mudita (Appreciative Joy) 淨念喜無量心

Contemplate on Mudita: Although life is full of woe, it holds also sources of happiness and joy. Let us tell people to seek and to find real joy within themselves and to rejoice with the joy to others! Let us tell them to unfold their joy to ever sublimer heights! 淨念人生雖苦仍存喜樂 , 讓眾生得知如何發掘自己喜樂之泉源 , 而得更高層次的妙樂。

Noble and sublime joy is a helper on the path to the extinction of suffering. Not he who is depressed by grief, but one possessed of joy finds that serene calmness leading to a contemplative state of mind and liberating wisdom. 淨念喜無量心可斷煩惱遠離苦海 , 可得清淨心及無上智慧。

Fill your own heart with joyful bliss, it is in your power to increase such experience of sympathetic joy, by producing happiness in others, by bringing them joy and solace. 給予他人快樂可使自己更加快樂 , 你具有一切的能力把自己的心盡量開放 , 讓快樂的泉源無限制地流露出來。

Contemplation on Mudita (Appreciative Joy) 淨念喜無量心

Your life will gain in joy by sharing the happiness of others as if it were yours. 視別人的快樂如同己樂 , 你的生命會充滿著無限歡欣。

In moments of happiness a person’s features change and become bright with joy. Joy rouses a person to noble aspirations and deeds, exceeding their normal capacity.在喜悅的一剎那間 , 人會顯得更明亮光彩。快樂可使人添增更高的期望及更多的潛能。

Small, indeed, is the share of happiness and joy allotted to beings! Wherever a little happiness comes to them, then you may rejoice that at least one ray of joy has pierced through the darkness of their lives, and dispelled the grey and gloomy mist that enwraps their hearts. 一生中快樂的時候雖少 , 但這一點兒快樂的柱光就可以給人們帶來了無限的希望 , 把所有的黑暗 , 無奈和灰心都帶走。

Contemplation on Mudita (Appreciative Joy) 淨念喜無量心

The more sublime and noble the joy of others is, the more justified will be our own sympathetic joy. 淨念眾生得更高妙樂 ,與更深層次的喜無量心相應。

A cause for our joy with others is their noble life securing them happiness here and in lives hereafter. 眾生能永離苦得樂是喜無量心之因。

A still nobler cause for our joy with others is their faith, understanding and following in the Dharma so that they can be liberated. 若知眾生能依信願行來修佛法即得更高層次的喜無量心。

All of the Dharma lead us, step by step, to an ever purer and loftier happiness. 一切佛法都教眾生逐步如何得清淨心及永恒的妙樂。

Chapter 9 The One Mark is No Mark第九品 一相無相分

“Subhuti, what do you think, can a Sotapanna have the thought, ‘I have obtained the fruit of Sotapanna.’?” Subhuti said, “No, World Honored One. And why? A Sotapanna means one who has entered the flow, and yet he has not entered anything. He has not entered forms, sounds, smells, tastes, tangible objects, or dharmas. For that reason he is called a Sotapanna.”

「須菩提!於意云何?須陀洹能作是念:『我得須陀洹果』不?」

須菩提言:「不也,世尊!何以故?須陀洹名為入流,而無所入,不入色聲香味觸法,是名須陀洹。」

「須菩提!於意云何?斯陀含能作是念:『我得斯陀含果』不?」

須菩提言:「不也,世尊!何以故?斯陀含名一往來,而實無往來,是名斯陀含。」

“Subhuti, what do you think? Can an Arhat have the thought, ‘I have obtained Arhatship.’?” Subhuti said, “No World Honored One. And why? Actually there is no Dharma called an Arhat. World Honored One, if an arhat had the thought, I have attained Arhatship that would be attachment to self, to others, to living beings, and to a life. World Honored One, the Buddha says that in my attainment of the No Strife Samàdhi I am the foremost among men, that I am the foremost Arhat free from desire…”

「須菩提!於意云何?阿羅漢能作是念:『我得阿羅漢道』不?」須菩提言:「不也,世尊!何以故?實無有法名阿羅漢。世尊!若阿羅

漢作是念:『我得阿羅漢道』,即為著我人眾生壽者。世尊!佛說我得無諍三昧,人中最為第一,是第一離欲阿羅漢。我不作是念:『我是離欲阿羅漢』。

“…World Honored One, I do not have the thought, ‘I am an Arhat free from desire.’ If I had the thought, ‘I have attained Arhatship’ then the World Honored One could not say, ‘Subhuti is the foremost of those who delight in practicing Arana.’ Since Subhuti actually has no practice, he is called ‘Subhuti, who delights in practicing Arana.’”

世尊!我若作是念:『我得阿羅漢道』,世尊則不說須菩提是樂阿蘭那行者!以須菩提實無所行,而名須菩提是樂阿蘭那行。」

Chapter 10 The Adornment of Pure Lands第十品 莊嚴淨土分

The Buddha said to Subhuti, “what do you think? Was there any Dharma which the Tathàgata obtained while with Burning Lamp Buddha?” “No, World Honored One, there was actually no Dharma which the Tathàgata obtained while with Burning Lamp Buddha.” “Subhuti, what do you think, does a Bodhisattva adorn Buddhalands?” “No, World Honored One. And why? The adornment of Buddhalands is no adornment, therefore it is called adornment.”

佛告須菩提:「於意云何?如來昔在燃燈佛所,於法有所得不?」 「世尊!如來在燃燈佛所,於法實無所得。」 「須菩提!於意云何?菩薩莊嚴佛土不?」 「不也,世尊!何以故?莊嚴佛土者,則非莊嚴,是名莊嚴。」

Chapter 10 The Adornment of Pure Lands第十品 莊嚴淨土分

“Therefore, Subhuti, the Bodhisattva, Mahàsattva, should thus produce a pure heart. He should produce that heart without dwelling in forms. He should produce that heart without dwelling in sounds, smells, tastes, tangible objects, or dharmas. He should produce that heart without dwelling anywhere.”

「是故須菩提,諸菩薩摩訶薩應如是生清淨心,不應住色生心,不應住聲香味觸法生心,應無所住而生其心。

Case 23 : Summit of the Mystic Peak 妙峰頂

Once When Pao Fu and Chang Ching were wandering in the mountains, Pao Fu Pointed with his hand and said, “Right here is the summit of the mystic peak” Chang Ching said, “Indeed it is. What a pity!” Hsueh Tou added a word, saying, “Today what is the purpose of travelling the mountains together with these fellows?”

舉,保福、長慶遊山次,福以手指云:“隻這裏便是妙峰頂。”慶云:“是則是,可惜許。”雪窦著語云:“今日共這漢遊山,圖個什麽?”

Case 23 : Summit of the Mystic Peak 妙峰頂

He also said, “Hundreds of thousands of years hence, I don’t say there are none, just that they will be few.”

Later this (dialogue between Pao Fu and Chang Ching) was quoted to Ching Ching. Ching Ching said. “If it hadn’t been Mr. Sun (Pao Fu), then you would have seen skulls covering the fields.”

複云:“百千年後不道無,隻是少。”後舉似鏡清,清云:“若不是孫公,便見髑髅遍野。”

Case 23 : Summit of the Mystic Peak 妙峰頂

A monk asked Chao Chou, “ What is the lone summit of the mystic peak?”

Chou said, “I won’t answer this question of yours.” The monk asked, “Why won’t you answer this question?”

Chou said, “I fear that if I answered you, you would fall onto the level ground.”

某僧問趙州:“如何是妙峰孤頂?”州云:“老僧不答爾這話。”僧云:“爲什麽不答這話?”州云:“我若答爾,恐落在平地上。”

Case 23 Verse: Summit of the Mystic Peak 妙峰頂The lone summit of the mystic peak,Is the teaching of one-flavor equanimity.Each and every one – they’re all real;Each and every one – they’re all complete.Where there’s no gain and no loss,No affirmation and no negation. There it stands alone

revealed; Therefore Sudhana couldn’t see him.道妙峰孤頂,是一味平等法門,一一皆真,一一皆

全,向無得無失,無是無非處獨露,所以善财不見。

Case 23 Verse: Summit of the Mystic Peak 妙峰頂

On the lone summit of the mystic peak, weeds grow in profusion;

Clearly it is brought up – to be given to whom;If it hadn’t been Mr. Sun discerning the real point,Skulls would cover the ground, but how many people

would know?妙峰孤頂草離離,拈得分明付與誰。不是孫公辨端的,髑髅著地幾人知?

yuàn xiāo sān zhàng zhū fán năo

願消三障諸煩惱We wish to rid ourselves of the three hindrances and all klesas.

yuàn dé zhì huì zhēn míng lĭao

願得智慧真明了We wish to gain wisdom and real understanding.

pŭ yuàn zuì zhàng xī xiāo chú

普願罪障悉消除 We wish all sinful hindrances to be totally eradicated.

shì shì cháng xíng pú sà dào

世世常行菩薩道In one life after another we always follow Bodhisattvas’ paths.

回向Parinamana (Transfer of Merit)
