After twelve long months of designing, analyzing, building, and testing Athena, the 2010 Formula-Hy-brid@SJSU team showed up to competition with something to prove. Four days and a lifetime later, Athena became one of just 14 cars to compete in every dynamic event, grabbed 2nd place for the Hybrid-in-Progress category, and finished 12th place overall. The days were filled with ups and downs, twists and turns, but on the other side of it sits an experienced team hungry for more.

Competition began Monday morning with check-in and technical inspection. Electrical Inspection was moving slow, so the team decided to hit Mechani-cal Inspection first. After making a few small ad-justments, the team had passed Mechanical and was ready for Electrical. On Tuesday, the team passed Electrical with flying colors and quickly finished tilt table and brake tests. We were one of just three teams to finish all technical inspec-tions by Tuesday night (along with Texas A&M and Politecnico Di Torino - Italy). Tuesday also saw design and business presentations. Formula-Hybrid@SJSU placed very well in both, earning a top-ten finish in design and receiving 95.6 out of 100 points for the business presentation.

On Wednesday, we were ready to race. We were the first team to run acceleration and recorded times of 6.2 for electric-only acceleration and 6.3 for unrestricted acceleration. These times were

both competitive, and gave us an early lead in the Hybrid-in-Progress category. The afternoon saw a whirlwind of activity as the car broke a rear steering tie rod during our first lap of autocross. The team came together and was able to get the car back on the track in less than an hour. We finished our re-maining three autocross runs and came in with a top-ten time of 53.1 seconds. At the end of the day, Formula-Hybrid@SJSU led the Hybrid-in-Progress category by over 100 points.

Thursday morning the team came to the track ready to finish strong. With ominous weather, the track was declared wet and all teams switched to rain tires. After delays for all teams to go through rain certification, endurance began. Athena started strong showing lap times of less than 00:01:15. Driver Gabe Crisologo cruised through seven strong laps, and suddenly the car slowed. Electronic protec-tion software kicked in because the battery voltage had dropped to dangerous levels. As it turns out, several cells in our 140-cell pack had failed, causing the surrounding cells to dump energy into them. This made the pack unstable and unable to hold voltage. With no battery management system in place to protect our batteries, we were forced to leave the track having completed only seven laps.

Despite our low score in endurance, we are proud to have finished 12th overall in a year plagued with many challenges. The team has gone through incredible adversity and through it all has built a competitive race car that kept up with the best. During the long drive home from New Hampshire, several team members couldn’t hold themselves back so they started designing our 2011 entry to Formula-Hybrid. The team took a few days to wind down, relax, and also prepare for finals. Stay tuned for more...

WOW! That’s Engineering is a day long event for high school girls and their parents. It is an annual event that is organized and hosted by the Society of Women Engineers, also known as SWE. This year’s event was held at Santa Clara University and gave industry professionals and college students (from SCU and SJSU) an opportunity to give back to their local com-munities.

The high school students experienced the creativity, innova-tion, and fun of engineering and technology through a variety of activities. These activities included a keynote speaker, 5 hands on workshops (which included bio, biomedical, electri-cal, mechanical, and alternative energy engineering exercis-es), a campus tour, a parent seminar, as well as a continental breakfast and lunch.

Our 2011 Formula SAE team volunteered at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca during the 6 hour American Le Mans Series race. They spent the weekend helping out at the souvenir shop and also helped out at the children fun center. When they weren’t volunteering, they were at the paddock speaking with race teams such as Dray-son Racing, Flying Lizard Motorsports, and Corvette Racing Pratt & Miller.

Our student chapter was also given an opportunity to showcase what we do at SJSU. We displayed our 2009 Rookie of the Year FSAE racecar and spoke with friends, families, industry professionals, and motorsport enthusiasts from all over the country.

THANK YOU to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and the Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Penin-sula (SCRAMP) for giving us all these amazing opportu-nities.
