Letters from ReadersSir—I have some comments on the

Farron and Trask articles from the Dec.2009 issue. Steven Farron’s article was

quite interesting, and together withRobert Henderson’s Oct. 2009 essay onAsian achievement, represents a refuta-tion of the “Chinese were superior toEuropeans” mythology and an effectiveriposte to arguments supporting “high-IQ” Asian immigration.

One critique is that Dr. Farron couldhave mentioned a paper by RichardLynn: “Race Differences in Intelligence,Creativity and Creative Achievement,” Mankind Quarterly, 2007, (48,2) 157-168. (Editor’s note: See Prof. Farron’sreference to this paper on page 13 of

this issue.) Also of interest is RichardNisbett’s: The Geography of Thought: How Asians and Westerners Think Dif- ferently . . . And Why, (Free Press; 2003).Although Mr. Nisbett rejects genetic ar-guments for IQ and behavior, one couldinterpret his ndings to conclude thatthe differences between European andAsian thinking are innate and heritable, and that “culture” cannot fully explainthe vast gulf between the Occident andthe Orient.

Dr. Trask is insufciently skepticalof Bryan Sykes’ work, which is grossly

incomplete. While I do not doubt Prof.Sykes’ data, his conclusions are basedon outdated methodology and are weakand unsubstantiated. Single-locus mark-ers like the non-recombining Y chromo-some (NRY) and mitochondrial DNA(mtDNA) may have some marginal util-ity in asking very specic questions onpopulation history; however, the word“marginal” must be stressed. We arenow in the age of large-scale autosomal(nuclear) genetic analysis, and conclu-

sions on group ancestry are valid insofaras they are based on a rm foundationof such analyses. Do not misunderstand:I am not saying that Prof. Sykes’ workis absolutely useless and should not

be discussed. However, I am saying itmust be put in context; that it is onlyan initial and very incomplete readingof the genetic evidence. Conclusions atthis point are premature, and we have toawait detailed and multiple autosomalstudies before concluding that we knowBritish racial ancestry and identity withreasonable certainly.

Further, even if we accept Prof.Sykes’ methods, he really does not knowwhat the genetics of the ancient Celts,Germans, and Romans were. Brennus,Arminius, and Julius Caesar did not stop

by Prof. Sykes’ laboratory to provideDNA samples; instead, Prof. Sykesextrapolates from modern populationsto their alleged ancient counterparts, anapproach that is fraught with difculties. Therefore, when Prof. Sykes says that“true Roman genes are very rare in theIsles,” what he more realistically meansis “NRY and mtDNA haplotypes that Iassume represent those of the ancientRomans are not found at high frequencyin the British Isles”—a far cry from theoriginal denitive statement.

While I understand why Dr. Trask

wishes to minimize the differences be-tween Germans and Celts, it is true thathe wrote in the same essay that the twogroups separated “tens of thousands” of years ago, which would mean they werenot much alike at all. Truth be told, Dr.Trask is in error. Time frames of “tensof thousands” of years are actually whatseparate Europeans from Asians; differ-ences between Germans and Celts arelikely measured in the thousands, nottens of thousands, of years. The point

remains that they were not identicalpeoples.

In a sense, however, this is irrelevantfor the purpose of British preservation-ism. It doesn’t matter how the Britishpeople and their gene pool came to be;they exist, and the British people havea vital interest in their own continuity. It doesn’t matter how “admixed” theBritish are, and past “admixture” of whatever degree does not obligate apeople to accept present or future admix-ture, nor does it justify genocidal racereplacement. However, I do agree thatan understanding of their identity andancestry may help motivate the peoplesof Britain to defend themselves and theirgenetic inheritance. Unfortunately, thequestionable work of Prof. Sykes is aweak reed on which to lean.

Sir — A couple of days ago a friendhere in the prison asked if I had receivedthe November issue of AR, which in-cluded my article about my prison ex-periences (see “Integration at its Worst,”AR, Nov. 2009). I jokingly told him itwas probably sitting on the desk of theGang Intelligence (GI) Officer. Thevery next day, a mail clerk brought mea denial slip for the issue, meaning thatit was being held up because it includedan article that was a threat to the security

of the prison—the article I wrote, forheaven’s sake! I guess I shouldn’t havebeen surprised. I have had run-ins withGI Ofcers and the mail room before.

Of course, there is nothing I wrotethat could be considered a threat toanyone or anything. It is all history andcommon knowledge. I appealed the de-nial, but this is a waste of time. The onlytime I have ever seen a denial withdrawnwas when the publisher wrote in protest. It would be nice to see my own article.

H. Scott Lacy, Lovelady, Tex.

Editor’s note—AR received a notice from Mr. Lacy’s prison explaining that  pages 1 and 3 of the November issuecontain “material that a reasonable person would construe as written solely for the purpose of communicating infor-mation designed to achieve a breakdownof prisons through offender disruptionsuch as strikes or riots” and that the is-sue must therefore be conscated.

We have appealed this absurd rul-ing.

lm Tora Tora Tora about the bomb-ing of Pearl Harbor. There were to be

ushers in World War II uniforms, PearlHarbor survivors, and vintage cars at agala evening at the 1930s-era WarnerGrand Theater in Sand Pedro. The De-partment of Cultural Affairs of Los An-geles, which runs the theater, canceledthe program, explaining that having anevent on Pearl Harbor Day would insultJapanese-Americans.

It has now become nearly impossiblefor a theater to show D.W. Grifth’ssilent classic, Birth of a Nation , becauseof its portrayal of blacks. In 2004, theSilent Movie Theatre in Los Angeles got

so many threats it cancelled a showing. The owner had lined up a lm scholar

to explain the movie’s value despite its“racism,” but that wasn’t enough.

Joseph Smith had a corn field in

East Lyme, Connecticut, and wantedto scare away geese that were eatinghis crop. He made scarecrows out of discarded environmental suits farmersuse to spray crops. The suits were whiteand had hoods, and blacks complainedthat they looked like Ku Klux Klanrobes, so Mr. Smith had to take downhis scarecrows.

In Chandler, Arizona, when policedescribed a 2007 rape suspect over theradio as “Hispanic,” Mayra Nieves, vicepresident of programming for KMYLRadio near Phoenix, complained that

this was “racial profiling,” and saidthe police should describe suspects as

“dark-skinned.”These days, whites must never dress

up in blackface unless they are NavySeals on a night mission—and eventhen, they probably need permissionfrom top brass. Four hockey players atColorado College were suspended fromthe team for four weeks after blackingtheir faces at a dress-up golf outing.Participants were to come as televisioncharacters, and they had chosen theprogram, “Family Matters,” which isabout blacks. Syracuse University sus-pended a student’s entire fraternity afterhe went to an off-campus costume partyin blackface as Tiger Woods. The Uni-versity of Illinois at Urbana-Champaignlaunched an investigation of four whitestudents who went to a Halloween partyas characters from a movie about Jamai-can bobsledders called Cool Running. Innot one of these cases did the students

mean to insult blacks. They modeledtheir costumes on people they liked oradmired.

Whites need no prompting fromnon-whites; they bow and scrape all ontheir own.

After the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist at-tacks in New York and Washington, DC,the Society of Professional Journalistsissued guidelines on how not to offendMuslims. Writers were to avoid termssuch as “Islamic terrorist” or “Muslimextremist,” and to “make an extra ef-fort to include olive-complexioned and

darker men and women, Sikhs, Muslimsand devout religious people” in articles. They were also to follow the AmericanMuslim Council’s rules in spelling suchwords as “Quran,” (not Koran) and“Makkah,” (not Mecca).

But whites can never know if they aredoing the right thing. In 1953, scientistsat the World Meteorological Organiza-tion (WMO) began giving female namesto Atlantic hurricanes. Women’s groupssaid this was insulting, so in 1979 theWMO added men’s names. Sincewomen were insulted by hurricanes with

girls’ names, blacks might have beenpleased that no hurricanes had nameslike Jamal, Keisha, or Latonya. Not so.Black Congresswoman Sheila JacksonLee (D-TX) complained that the nameswere “lily white” and demanded blacknames.

$2.5 million a year as the coach of theDenver Nuggets basketball team, but in2001 he got into a shouting match witha fan after a 99-96 loss, and concludedthe exchange with: “Go drink anotherbeer you Mexican piece of s**t.” It was“Mexican,” not “s**t,” that got him in

trouble, and Hispanics threatened toboycott games. Mr. Issel groveled—publicly and tearfully—but the teamsuspended him for four games and nedhim $112,000. This did not satisfy His-panics, so the Nuggets red him.

David Lenihan used to be a talk showhost on a Saint Louis radio station, butone word ended his career, too. He wastelling his audience how excited hewas at rumors that black Secretary of State Condeleezza Rice might become

commissioner of the National FootballLeague: “She’s African-American,which would kind of be a big coon.A big coon. Oh my God. I am totally, totally, totally, totally, totally sorry forthat.” Everyone knew he meant to saycoup rather than coon, but the stationred him on the spot.

Tom Burlington used to be a week-end anchor for Fox News. In 2007, he

was discussing plans for the evening’snews broadcast, which was to includethe NAACP youth council’s decisionto “bury ‘the N-word’.” Mr. Burlingtonpronounced the word, saying he thoughtthat in a discussion of that kind refus-ing to use it gave it even greater power.A black woman who was present wasoffended. He apologized but was givensensitivity training and later red.

E.D. Hill was the anchor of the FoxNews program, “America’s Pulse,” untilshe broke the rules. After Barack Obamasecured the Democratic nominationfor president he bumped sts with hiswife. On the air, Miss Hill said “a stbump? A pound? A terrorist st jab?The gesture everyone seems to interpretdifferently.” She apologized for usingthe word “terrorist” but lost her programanyway.

In 2008, Prof. Donald Hindley, who

had taught at Brandeis University for47 years, was censured for explainingto a class that Mexican immigrants aresometimes referred to pejoratively as“wetbacks.” Simply for uttering thisword, he was sent to sensitivity train-ing and had a monitor posted to keepan eye on him until the provost wassatisfied Prof. Hindley was “able toconduct (himself) appropriately in theclassroom.”

In 2005, Governor Ted Kulongoskiof Oregon recommended state senatorNeil Bryant for a post on the board of

Oregon Health & Science University. Aspart of the vetting process, Mr. Bryantlled out a three-page form on “genderand ethnicity.” For a question about dis-abilities Mr. Bryant wrote “white/male”as a joke. This was such an outrage thatdespite an apology, Mr. Bryant wasremoved from consideration.

Kelly Tilghman was a reporter on theGolf Channel and friends with the blackgolfer Tiger Woods. During a broadcast, her on-air partner joked that Mr. Woodswas so dominant that the only way tostop him would be for young players to

“gang up” on him. “Lynch him in a backalley,” replied Miss Tilghman, with alaugh. Al Sharpton demanded that shebe red for what was “an insult to allblacks.” Mr. Woods issued a statementsaying it was a “non-issue.” The Golf Channel nevertheless suspended her fortwo weeks without pay. When Golfweek  magazine wrote an article about MissTilghman and put a picture of a noose onthe cover, editor Dave Seanor was redimmediately because the image was

considered insensitive to blacks.Just talking about nooses is danger-

ous. Travis Grigsby was a drummer inthe marching band at Lee’s SummitHigh School in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. He was talking about the best knots fortying up drum equipment and a fellowdrummer asked if he knew how to tiea hangman’s noose. Mr. Grigsby, anEagle Scout, said he did. A black whooverheard the conversation said he wasoffended, and this was enough for theschool to suspend Mr. Grigsby from theband for two weeks.

When Des Moines Area CommunityCollege published its student calendarfor 2008/2009 it contained a typo:“Black History Lunch and Learn” was“Linch and Learn.” The college imme-diately printed stickers to cover up themistake, and no less a person than thecollege president, Rob Denson, had to

apologize. There are people watching over usall the time, protecting us from nox-

ious stereotypes. Speedy Gonzales isa cartoon-character mouse who was aWarner Brothers favorite for nearly 50years. He wore a sombrero, spoke witha heavy Mexican accent, and outwit-ted foes like Sylvester, “the GreengoPussygato.” The 1955 animated short

“Speedy Gonzales” even won an Acad-emy Award. However, in 1999, whenthe Cartoon Network got exclusivecontrol of Speedy, it permanentlybanned him from American television. That was “because of its ethnic stereo-types,” explained spokesman LaurieGoldberg, who conceded that the mousewas “hugely popular” on The CartoonNetwork Latin America.

Little known fact: white people eat thestuff, too.

promised confidentiality. In 2001,officials at Montachusett RegionalVocational School in Fitchburg, Massa-chusetts, conducted a survey about racerelations at the school. They told stu-dents the results would be condential, and they got frank answers. Whites saidminority students got special treatmentand were starting ghts. School admin-

istrators identied ve white studentswho gave these answers and suspendedthem for three days for “behavior caus-ing a dangerous condition” and making“racist comments.”

Putting whites on the defensive givesnon-whites such enormous advantagesthat they are sometimes tempted to take

things too far. For example, at a 2008meeting of Dallas County, Texas, com-missioners, Kenneth Mayeld, who iswhite, complained about the number of trafc tickets that got lost in the centralcollections office, comparing it to ablack hole. “Excuse me!” said blackcommissioner John Wiley Price veryloudly, and insisted that the ofce wasa “white hole.” Another black, ThomasJones, demanded an apology. There wasno apology, but several days later Mr.Price explained there were other expres-sions whites must not use, such as “angel

food cake” and “devil’s food cake.”Mayor Michael Bloomberg of NewYork City got into similar trouble whenhe said that heads of the transit unionhad “thuggishly turned their backs onNew York City” by calling a strike. Ablack city council member and otherblack leaders complained that since thetransit unions were majority non-white,the word “thuggish” was “racist.”

In 2003, Grace Fuller and LouiseSawyer, both black, were about to y

out of Las Vegas on Southwest Airlines, when a white flight attendant urgedpassengers to take their seats, saying,“Eenie, meenie, minie, moe; pick a seat,we gotta go.” The second line is usu-ally “catch a tiger by the toe,” but MissFuller and Miss Sawyer said the rhymewas directed at them, since an olderversion is “catch a nigger by the toe.”The ight attendant, who was 22 atthe time she recited the lines, said shehad never heard the “nigger” version, and that she learned the rhyme froma co-worker who used it to encour-age passengers to take seats. TheUS District Court in Kansas Cityallowed a suit for damages againstSouthwest but a jury found the airlinenot guilty.

Southwest had the gumption tofight this absurd case rather thansettle it, and a jury recognized a

shakedown when it saw one, but thatsuch a case could even go to courtsays a lot about the racial balance of power in America. You can alwaysfind liberals who agree with thefamous British Macpherson Report  of 1999 that anything anyone says is“racist” is “racist,” especially if a non-white says so.

This is why whites police their lan-guage so ruthlessly. One woman wroteabout paying for food at a Wendy’sdrive-through and grabbing madly at adollar bill that a gust of wind blew out of

her car. “Oh, boy; that was interesting”

she said, when she managed to pin thebill to the side of the car. “I beat myself up as I drove away,” she added. Why?Because the person she handed the bill towas a young black man and she had usedthe word “boy” in his presence.

This is, of course, crazy, but whitesimpose rules on themselves becausethey never know when blacks, in par-

ticular, will take offense. Radio hostDennis Prager writes that he learnedfrom a rm that specializes in analyzinghow people react to radio talk shows thatit uses no blacks in the listening panelsin puts together for studies. The com-pany discovered that almost no whites

are willing to disagree with a black. As soon as a black voiced an opinion, whites stopped saying what they reallythought. When Mr. Prager asked his ra-dio audience about this, whites called infrom around the country to say they were

afraid to disagree with a black person forfear of being thought racist. Some non-whites are never satis-

ed. In 2009, there were complaintsfrom minority staff in the DelawareDepartment of Transportation aboutinsensitive language, so the departmenthead, Carolann Wicks, distributed a “Di-versity Spotlight” newsletter describingbehavior and language she consideredunacceptable. Minorities were so of-fended that the newsletter spelled out thewords whites were not supposed to usethat the department had to recall every

copy and destroy them.A clever laboratory test has demon-strated the lengths to which whites goto avoid breaching racial etiquette—oreven mentioning race at all. In experi-ments at Tufts University and HarvardBusiness School, a white subject waspaired with a partner and each was given30 photographs of faces that varied byrace, sex, and background color. Theywere then supposed to identify one of the 30 faces by asking as few yes-or-

no questions as possible. Asking aboutrace was clearly a good way to narrowdown the possibilities, but when whiteswere paired with a black partner, only

10 percent could bring themselves tomention race. If they had a white part-ner, 95 percent of whites adopted this

obvious strategy. Samuel Sommers, an

assistant professor at Tufts, explainedthat whites are “worried that they’ll lookbad if they admit they notice it [race] inother people.”

Small children haven’t learnedracial etiquette yet, so they mentionrace in the experiment, but whitesstart avoiding it by about age 10 or11. Because they deny themselvesan obvious way to identify thecorrect photograph, older childrendo worse on the test than youngerchildren. “This result is fascinatingbecause it shows that children asyoung as 10 feel the need to try toavoid appearing prejudiced, evenif doing so leads them to performpoorly on a basic cognitive test,”

said Kristin Pauker, a PhD candidate atTufts who co-authored the study.

During Barack Obama’s campaignfor the presidency, Duke University

sociologist Eduardo Bonilla-Silva asked

the white students in his class to raisetheir hands if they had a black friendon campus. Every one raised his hand. When Prof. Bonilla-Silva asked theblacks in the class if they had whitefriends on campus not one raised hishand. At the time, blacks were about 10percent of the student body, so for everywhite to have one black friend, everyblack would have had to have an averageof eight or nine white friends.

What’s going on here? Even if, sta-tistically speaking, it was nearly impos-sible for all whites to have black friends, they were afraid someone would thinkthey were racist if they couldn’t claim tohave at least one. There is no pressure onblacks to claim they have white friends. In fact, many blacks pride themselves onkeeping away from whites.

Mexico on the BrinkGeorge W. Grayson, Mexico: Narco-Violence and a Failed State?, Transaction Publishers,

2010, 339 pp., $34.95.

Is drug violence destroyingthe country?

reviewed by Thomas Jackson

Is Mexico on the verge of becoming

a “failed state” like Somalia? GeorgeGrayson, who teaches government atWilliam and Mary, thinks it could be.Mexico was never a model of publicspiritedness, and billions in hot moneyfrom the drug trade have blasted whatlittle integrity the country ever had.Hair-raising stories occasionally oatnorth, but it takes the full picture Prof.Grayson offers to grasp how bad thingsreally are.

The United States and Mexico areboth cursed by having each other asneighbors. We get Mexicans and they

get a violent, enormously powerfulunderworld that exists mainly becauseof our insatiable demand for drugs.Although many Mexicans have becomeaddicts, the real money is in gettingmarijuana, heroin, and cocaine intoEl Norte, and that is why the worstbreakdowns in authority are in the sixsmugglers’-haven Mexican states thatborder the US.

Prof. Grayson reports that CiudadJuarez, Nogales, Nuevo Laredo, and

threats to kill an ofcer every 48 hoursuntil he quit. In 2005 in Nuevo Laredo, the job of police chief went beggingbecause no one dared take it. A printingcompany owner said he would give it atry and was dead within six hours. Howdid Mexico get this way?

A boost from the Americans

We have made the drug business ir-resistible for Mexicans, who learned theropes running booze during Prohibition.During the Second World War, when theJapanese occupied the poppy-growingregions of Asia, and Turkey sided withthe Axis, we taught Mexicans how togrow the opium poppies we needed formaking morphine. The hills of SinaloaState turned out to be perfect. After thewar, we asked the Sinaloans to stop,

but poppies were just too protable togive up. Drug use took off in the UnitedStates during the ’60s, and productionand smuggling grew to meet demand.Since then, millions of illegal immi-grants have sneaked across the border, plowing even deeper channels for illegaltrade.

Prof. Grayson writes that while theInstitutional Revolutionary Party (PRI)was the unchallenged political power, the drug industry was reasonably well

virtually every other Mexican bordertown is in a state of terror, overwhelmedby murder, dismemberment, and kidnap-ping. So many bodies show up withoutheads—or vice versa—that funeralhomes offer special deals to hold the

remains until missing parts turn up.Tourists are long gone, and undertakingand casket making are the only growthindustries.

In Ciudad Juarez, just across theborder from El Paso, the police chief resigned after multiple cop killings and

El Chapo’s third wife.

behaved. Each cartel stuck to its own ter-ritory and sold drugs only in the UnitedStates. Hit men didn’t kill innocentpeople, and kidnapping was rare. Druglords were deferential to politicians.

Things began to change in the 1990s,when Mexican drug trafckers startedbuying huge quantities of Colombiancocaine to sell in the United States. This added enormously to their protsand power. The National Action Party(PAN) began winning regional elec-tions, and the oppressive but stable PRIsystem broke down. At that time, federalauthorities were mainly responsible forghting drug crimes, and as local policecame under local control, it becameeasier for them to ignore the problemcompletely.

In 2000, the PRI lost a presidentialelection for the rst time in 70 years, and Prof. Grayson says the nal coupde grace

to the old centralized systemmade it easier to out the law and es-tablish parallel power centers. Anotherbig push toward anarchy was the arrivalof new cartels such as the Zetas and LaFamilia, which weremore violent than theestablished gangs andhad no respect for car-tel boundaries and theold, quiet way of doingbusiness. The stagewas set for real threatsto state power.

The cartels

How bad have thingsgotten? It is estimatedthat only one in fivecrimes is reported, andthat of these, only 13percent are investigat-ed, and of that numberonly 5 percent lead toa sentence. This meansthat about 1.3 crimes ina thousand are actually

punished. Kidnapping has been on asharp and terrifying rise, but only an es-timated 10 percent are reported becausethe public thinks the police were in onthe snatch. In the rst half of 2008 alone, there were 95 attacks on journalists, andso many newsmen have been killed thatpress organizations call Mexico one of the world’s most dangerous countriesfor newsmen.

An equally disturbing picture emerg-es from the details of the lives of drug

kingpins. Take Joaquin Guzman Loeraor “El Chapo” (Shorty), as he is known.Born in 1957, he is the head of theSinaloa Cartel, named for the state inwhich it is based. Forbes says he isworth $1 billion and rates him the 41stmost powerful man in the world. Whenhe was rst arrested in 1991, he dropped$50,000 on the desk of a Mexico Citypolice ofcer who was so startled he lethim go. El Chapo was caught and im-prisoned in Guatemala, where he livedin a luxurious cell, drank ne wines, chatted by phone with top media per-sonalities, carried on several notoriousaffairs, and ran his business unimpeded. He was transferred to Mexico’s top-security prison but escaped just a fewdays before he was to be extradited tothe United States. No fewer than 78people were implicated in the elaboratebribery scheme that led to his escape.

In 2007, he fell for Emma CoronelAispuro, a 17-year-old contestant forthe title of “Queen of the Great Guayabaand Coffee Festival” in Sinaloa. OnJan. 6, 2008, she held a dance in La

Angostura in supportof her candidacy. Twohundred armed men onmotorcycles roared intotown and secured theentrances to the city.A popular profession-al music group, “LosCanelos de Durango”

arrived by air to ser-enade the beauty withher favorite songs, andEl Chapo himself andhis entourage arrivedlater in a fleet of sixplanes. Emma’s beam-ing parents presentedher to her suitor, andthe party went on for 12hours before El Chapoand his pals made agraceful exit. Only the

next day did the cops

arrive. Emma won the beauty competi-tion, and went on to become El Chapo’sthird wife.

Emma’s story, by the way, has afairy-tale ending in the eyes of manyLatinas, who want nothing more than tocatch the eye of a drug baron. Sin tetasno hay paraiso ( No Paradise Without Tits) is the name of a novel by a Colom-bian author about mothers who pay forbreast augmentation for their daughtersso they can become the playthings of

men with drug money. The book wasmade into a wildly popular televisionseries that ran for 23-episodes and wassyndicated all over Latin America (thePuerto Rican version was called  NoParadise Without Breasts because theFCC forbids use of the word “tits”).

El Chapo likes to cause a stir when heeats out. He and a dozen heavily-armedbody guards will sweep into a tony res-taurant, introduce themselves, politelytake custody of the other patrons’ cellphones, and urge them to stay in theirseats and enjoy themselves for the nexttwo hours. After the thugs have eaten

their ll and strolled out, the patrons ndthat El Chapo has picked up their tabs. The cartel’s business operations are

rst class. Its 1,500-foot-long drug-run-ning tunnel from Tijuana to Otay Mesa, near San Diego, was made of reinforcedconcrete and had air conditioning. TheSinaloa boys dug an equally sophisti-cated tunnel to Douglas, Arizona.

The police may never catch El Chapo, despite a $5 million dollar price on his

head. Five million is peanuts to a manwho once boasted he splashes out thatmuch every month in bribes. He is a heroin his state, and his neighbors will neverturn him in. He has roads paved, handsout cash to the poor, xes up churches,

Corpse with a message.

builds sidewalks, and has created thou-sands of high-paying jobs in the poppyelds. Some fans attribute his manyseemingly-miraculous escapes to thefact that he was born on Christmas. Arival drug gang is more likely than thepolice to end his career.

El Chapo is celebrated in manynarcocorridos, or songs that glorifydrug bosses. Professional bands playnarcocorridos, and a catchy one cantop the charts. It is not well for a bandto become too closely associated witha cartel, however; hit men have takenout a dozen or so singers who praisedtheir rivals.

The Gulf Cartel, a long-time syndicatebased just south of Texas in TamaulipasState is the Sinaloans’ main rival. It usedto be run by Juan Garcia Abrego, who,in 1994, had the distinction of being therst Mexican and the rst drug smuggler

to make the FBI’s ten most wanted list.He was caught and extradited to the US,where he is serving several consecutivelife sentences.

He was succeeded by Osiel Cárde-nas Guillén, who was arrested andimprisoned in Mexico in 2003, butcontinued to run his empire from hisair-conditioned, liquor-stocked cell

equipped with television and telephone, where he enjoyed frequent conjugalvisits from ladies not his wife. Hewas a big hit back in Tamaulipas forsponsoring massive Children’s Daycelebrations in bull rings and baseballstadiums. As many as 18,000 peoplecame for free food, clowns, wrestlers, and presents for children with signednotes from Mr. Cardenas Guillen thatread, “Constancy, Discipline, and Ef-

fort are the basis of success.” The funcame to an end in 2007 when he wasshipped to the United States, where helanguishes still.

Teodoro Garcia Simental runs theTijuana Cartel. A line in a narcocor-rido sums up his relationship to thegovernment: “Listen up, President . .. in Tijuana I rule.” He pays his men$300 for every federal policeman theykill, and he, himself, likes to kill peopleat parties; he enjoys the sensation it cre-

ates. In his gang, status comes from themost creative and cruel killing; his menare said to have dissolved more than 300people in caustic soda. He split off froman earlier TijuanaCartel and his warwith the originalfaction has raisedthe kill rate inTijuana. Policewho operate inhis territory cov-er their licenseplates with tapeand run the otherway when theysee his proces-sion of CadillacEscalades.

T h e O a x -aca Cartel, alsonamed for the

state in which itis based, was un-til recently run byPedro Diaz Para-da. His most famousexploit dates back to a 1985 conviction, when a judge sentenced him to 33 yearsin prison. He told the judge, “I will goand you will die.” Six days later he es-caped, and two years after that his menred 33 rounds into the judge’s bodyand left a note, “a bullet for a year.” Hewas nally captured in 2007 and is in aMexican prison.

There are several other traditionalcartels, but two recently establishedones have distinct personalities. TheZetas have their origin in a 1997 deci-sion by the Gulf Cartel to hire Mexican

special-forces men for security. Therst batch of 30 brought others over tothe dark side and they eventually brokeaway from their masters and went intobusiness for themselves. The Zetas arenow the dominant cartel in Nuevo Leon

state and most of Tamaulipas. They arein such rm control that these two statesare the most peaceful of the six thatborder the US.

The Zetas are the most militarizedof the cartels and have set up at leastsix camps—one across the border inGuatemala—for weapons training. It issaid that one must kill to join the Zetasand that the only way out is death. Theygo to almost insane lengths to free cap-tured comrades and make a fetish of retrieving the bodies of dead Zetas. They

also have a system of benets paymentsfor bereaved spouses and children. TheZetas have broadened their reach byrecruiting American Hispanics, and aresaid to control such American gangs

as the Mexican Maa and the TexasSyndicate.

La Familia (the Family) came to na-tional attention in 2006, when some of its men burst into a night club in Urua-pan in Michoacan state, and tossed vedecapitated heads onto the dance oor.Attached was the message, “The Fam-ily doesn’t kill for money. It doesn’t

kill women. It doesn’t kill innocentpeople, only those who deserve to die.Know that this is divine justice.”

La Familia is said to have started asa group of armed citizens who wanted

to keep kidnappers and methamphet-amines out of their Michoacan neighbor-hoods, and although they deal in everyother kind of drug, at least in some areasthey do not handle meth. Its membersgo to church, carry around “Bibles” of their leader’s philosophy, and justify

Teodoro Garcia Simentallikes to kill people at par-ties; he enjoys the sensa-

tion it creates.

executions as “orders of the Lord.” Theyare so powerful in Michoacan statethat they appoint police chiefs in sometowns. They perform the usual localgood works: paving streets, buildingchurches, helping the poor. La Familia’sestimated 4,000 members are not sup-posed to use the drugs they sell.

Although each cartel has its person-ality, and chiefs cut distinctive gures, drug gangs have a lot in common. Likemany criminal groups, they are often runby brothers or other extended families.Members also tend to be both religiousand superstitious, and perhaps becausethey see it so often, have an almostpathological fear of death. They have apatron saint, Jesus Malverde, who is asemi-mythical 19th century bandit whois said to have stolen from the rich to

give to the poor. There is a shrine tohim in Culiacan, where smugglers comebefore a trip north to ask for protection. If the trip goes well, they come backand pay the shrine band to serenadeMalverde.

Another saint of the drug trade isSanta Muerte (Saint Death), representedas a clothed skeleton holding a scythe. She is an underworld saint, bannedby the Catholic Church, but has beengreatly popularized by drug runners. She

is especially venerated around NuevoLaredo, where the government has usedbackhoes to smash more than 30 shrinesbuilt to honor her.

Fighting drugs?

Since his election in 2006, PresidentFelipe Calderon has made control-ling the drug barons—and thereby thecountry—one his top priorities, but hedoesn’t have much to show for it. Drug-related deaths are climbing: 2,275 in2007, 5,207 in 2008, and in 2009 wereon a trend easily to break records. Oneapparently unsolvable problem is policecorruption. When a plane carrying oneof El Chapo’s top lieutenants was forcedto ditch because of engine trouble in

1995, he was found to have 33 activemembers of the Federal Judicial Policein his 40-man bodyguard.

The police, both local and federal, are so rotten that President Calderonhas relied on the army to control themand to ght the cartels, but soldiers geta reputation for high-handedness andarrogance wherever they are deployed. The education level in the army is solow that instruction manuals are writtenas comic books. Although not quite sorotten as the police, the army has beenhit by about 150,000 desertions between2001 to 2008, and many deserters havemoved to the cartels, where the pay isbetter.

In June 2009, President Calderonmerged the two federal forces into a

Where the GunsCome From

Gun grabbers have beenwhooping up a rumor that90 percent of the guns used

in crimes in Mexico come from theUS, and Barack Obama has helpedspread the rumor. Prof. Graysontells us otherwise. During 2007 and2008, Mexico had an agreement onsending captured guns to the US for

identication. During that period, itsent a sample of 11,000 to the ATFfor identication. Of that number, the Bureau managed to identify6,000, and 90 percent of those gunswere from the US.

In any case, the drug cartels haveplenty of money and are good atdiscreet international shipments. They could buy guns anywhere theylike. Often, they needn’t bother tolook outside Mexico. The police arefamous for hawking off the gunsthey capture.

new organization called the FederalPolice, but it appears to be the same badapples under a new name. Prof. Graysonsays Mexican legislators don’t want anincorruptible force because it might in-vestigate their own crimes, and that thepolice have such a bad reputation that itis nearly impossible to get honest men

to become ofcers. The army is jealousof the new Federal Police because it isafraid part of the military budget will beused to support it.

The local police are more than likelyon the take, and many are obese, physi-cal wrecks. Nearly two-thirds are hireddespite having failed background checksthat are supposed to weed out criminals,drug-takers, and crazies.

The prison system is a mess, withmassive corruption, and special privi-leges for cartel chiefs who can bribeguards. It has been impossible to keepcell phones out of prisons, so in 2007expensive jamming equipment was putin at 11 prisons. It has broken down andno longer works, so prisoners can tend tobusiness just as before. Drugs and liquorflow in and prisoners flowout. There were 22 successfulescapes during just the rstthree months of 2009.

Mexico has traditionally

been too proud to extraditecriminals to the US but Presi-dent Calderon knows thatis the only way to be surethey are permanently out of the way. He has extraditedseveral hundred, whom theAmerican taxpayer will feed, house, clothe, and medicatefor the rest of their lives.

In late 2009, the Mexicangovernment had rewards of

30 million pesos (about $2.4 million)on the top 24 drug kingpins, and smalleramounts on smaller fry, but there arefew payouts; cartel chiefs have madethemselves too popular—and feared—in their own states for anyone to turnthem in. In any case, when a big cheeseis taken out it can lead to bloody suc-

cession battles and border wars withneighboring cartels that think theysee an opening.

Failed state?

Prof. Grayson writes of “thedecomposition of the state,” andthinks only legalizing drugs willimprove things. In 2009, the govern-ment listed 233 “zones of impunity”where crime cannot be prevented orpunished. Mexico City’s interna-tional airport is a den of corruption,

where cartels routinely grease palmsto run contraband in and out. Manychurchmen are in the pockets of the

drug lords; they preside over privateservices in exchange for donations andchurch repairs. The powerful MexicanOil Workers Union is a morass of feath-erbedding, theft, and sweetheart deals. One third of the electricity in the MexicoCity area is stolen. The tax collectionsystem is a joke.

“Most Mexicans have become disil-lusioned by the corruption and inactionof the authorities,” writes Prof. Grayson,

“and consequently have little reason tofeel any obligation to their community.”It starts at the top. Mexican presidentsserve for a single six-year term, andthe last year is called the Year of theHidalgo. It gets its name from MiguelHidalgo, the historical gure on the ten-peso coin, and means that the outgoingpresident uses his last year for really

The authoralso insists on a labored, pointlesscomparison of the organizationof drug gangs to Catholic Churchhierarchy, which runs irritatinglythrough the whole book. He is acomplete rearms ignoramus, writ-ing about .9 millimeter weapons(such a weapon would re a roundabout as thick as pencil lead) and50 millimeter bullets (the Nazisand the Soviets used 50 millimetermortars during the Second WorldWar). serious stealing. Everyone’s hand isout. In 1985, when a huge earthquakecentered on Mexico City killed 10,000people and attened 6,000 buildings, survivors had to bribe the police to letthem through to where family memberswere pinned under the rubble.

When disloyalty to the communityreaches a certain level there is no go-ing back. Societies function only whenenough people are capable of acting onmotives other than pure selshness, andMexico may be nearing the point of noreturn. Drugs and drug money make

things worse, but problems startwith the every-man-for-himself mentality that thrives in LatinAmerica.

Mexico may or may not

crumble into complete law-lessness as Somalia and partsof Pakistan have, but we willpay the price no matter whathappens. The rot is alreadylapping over the border, takingroot in those parts of the UnitedStates that are already Mexicanin everything but name. The shooter . . .

Many attacks are down-played or whitewashed.

by Dave Gibson

The day after Maj. Malik Hasanshouted “Allah Akbar” as hegunned down fellow soldiers at

Fort Hood, President Obama told usnot to “jump to conclusions” about mo-tives. Since then there has been morethan enough evidence to prove that Dr.Hasan was a fanatic who put loyalty to

Islam above all else. His statements tocolleagues, his Internet postings, and hisdisturbing behavior have been widely

reported elsewhere, but if conrmationwere necessary one need only to look atMaj. Hasan’s business card. It includednot only his qualications and contactinformation but also the line: “SoA(SWT).” Experts tell is that SoA standsfor “Soldier of Allah,” and SWT stands

for “Subhanahu Wa Ta’all,” or “gloryto God” in Arabic.

Taking their cue from the President, the mainstream media downplayedMaj. Hasan’s fanaticism, and offeredthreadbare excuses about mental insta-bility and harassment from non-Muslimcolleagues. Typical was MSNBC’s Hardball anchor Chris Matthews’ ex-

planation as to why the Army and FBIdid nothing when Maj. Hasan tried toget in touch with al-Qaeda: “That’s nota crime to contact al-Qaeda is it?”

Perhaps most revolting was the reac-tion by Army Chief of Staff GeneralGeorge Casey on  Meet the Press. He,too, warned against drawing conclu-sions about Maj. Hasan’s motives, andlamented that “it would be a shame—asgreat a tragedy as this was—it wouldbe a shame if our diversity became acasualty as well.” He seemed to implythat “diversity” was more important thanpractical measures to keep murderousMuslims out of the military.

Despite the government cover-upsand media spinning, there is no doubtthat we have Muslim ter-

rorists plotting and at-tacking inside the UnitedStates. If we are to survive,we must open our eyes tothe facts and stop worry-ing about who may be of-fended if we take measuresto protect ourselves.

With 86 percent of Americans identifyingthemselves as Christians, radical Muslims realizethat they will never con-vert us and some, as direct-

ed by the Koran, have nowdecided to kill us. However, you will never hear that painful truthfrom the mouths of network anchors orfrom our spineless politicians.

What follows is a list of known plotsand terrorist attacks carried out sinceSeptember 11, 2001 by Muslim radicalsliving in the US:

On July 4, 2002, Egyptian nationalHesham Mohamed Hadayet walked intoLos Angeles International Airport andshot and killed El Al stewardess VickyChen and Los Angeles resident Yaakev

Aminov. Mr. Hadayet also stabbed anEl Al security guard who shot and killedhim. Israeli ofcials were unanimous incalling the attack terrorism, but Ameri-cans disagreed. FBI spokesman MattMcLaughlin told reporters: “There isno indication of any terrorism connec-tion in this matter,” and Los AngelesMayor James Hahn called it “an isolatedincident.”

In March 2003, while he was sta-tioned in Kuwait with American forces

preparing to attack Iraq, Sgt. HasanKarim Akbar tossed a grenade and redinto a tent lled with sleeping soldiers. In an attack clearly aimed at ofcers, hekilled Army Capt. Christopher Seifertand Air Force Maj. Gregory Stone, andinjured 14 other soldiers. Mr. Akbar, ablack who was born Mark Kools, con-verted to Islam after joining the Army, and identied with Iraqis rather thanwith his fellow soldiers. “You guys arecoming into our countries, and you’regoing to rape our women and kill ourchildren,” he said after he was arrested.Sgt. Akbar was sentenced to death andis awaiting execution.

In October 2005, a 21-year-old whitestudent attending the University of Okla-

homa accidentally explod-

ed a backpack bomb out-side of a sold-out footballgame at Oklahoma Memo-rial Stadium. According toeyewitness accounts, JoelHenry Hinrichs was sittingon a park bench about 100yards from the stadiumfidgeting with his back-pack, when the bomb wentoff. He is thought to havebeen arming the bombbefore carrying it into thestadium crowded with

84,500 fans. Mr. Hinrichshad a Pakistani roommateand had marked Muslim leanings. Policesearched their apartment and discoveredmore bomb-making materials as wellas anti-Semitic, anti-American Islamicliterature. The FBI claimed that Hinrichswas simply a “troubled” young man.

In March 2006, a young Muslimnamed Mohammed Reza Taheri-azarrented an SUV and drove it into a crowdof students at the University of NorthCarolina, injuring nine people. The Ira-nian native told police he was retaliating

for “the treatment of Muslims around theworld.” At his arraignment, Mr. Taheri-azar told the judge he was “thankful forthe opportunity to spread the will of Allah,” and has since pleaded guilty tonine counts of attempted murder.

In July 2006, Naveed Afzal Haqforced his way into the Seattle JewishFederation and shot six people, killingone, before surrendering to a SWATteam. He attacked only women, one of whom was pregnant. Jewish Federation

employee Marla Meislin Dietrich toldreporters that as Mr. Haq walked thehalls ring, he shouted: “I’m Muslim-American” and “I’m angry at Israel.”

His father is a founder of a Seattle-area

mosque. The authorities refused to callthis terrorism; Seattle Mayor GregNickels insisted it was “a crime of hate.”The city’s police chief, Gil Kerlikowske, added that he was “protecting mosquesbecause there is always concern aboutretaliatory activity.”

In August 2008, two weeks before theDemocratic National Convention, So-mali-born Saleman Abdirahman Diriewas found dead of cyanide poisoning ina room at the Burnsley Hotel in Denver, just a few blocks from the state capital. In his room was more than a pound of

sodium cyanide, which is commonlyfound in rat poison. It can also be mixedwith certain acids to produce extremelylethal cyanide gas that could have killeda large number of people. The FBIdownplayed any possible connectionto terrorism, and the story immediatelydropped from sight.

In October 2008, Shirwa Ahmedexploded a bomb in a suicide attack at aUnited Nations checkpoint in NorthernSomalia, killing 29 people. Ahmed wasa naturalized US citizen, living in Min-neapolis, Minnesota, after immigrating

from Somalia, and is thought to be therst American citizen to kill himself in a suicide attack. In 2008, more thana dozen men of Somali descent disap-peared from Minneapolis. US lawenforcement believes all of them havereturned to Somalia to attend terroristtraining camps or to join the al-Shabaabterrorist organization, which is closelyallied with al Qaeda.

In December 2008, five Muslimswere convicted of a 2007 conspiracy

to commit an armed attack at Fort Dix,in New Jersey. Mohamad Shnewer,Dritan Duka, Eljvir Duka, and ShainDuka, were sentenced to life in prison,

and Serdar Tatar got a 33-year sentence.

Three of the terrorists were illegal alienswho entered the United States fromMexico.

In May 2009, the FBI arrested fourmen who thought they were plantingcar bombs outside the Riverdale Templeand the Riverdale Jewish Center in NewYork City. They also planned to shootdown military aircraft with a Stingermissile. All of the bombs were fakessupplied by an informant. Three of thefour men are black converts reported tohave become radical Muslims in prison, and the fourth is Haitian. New York

City Police Commissioner RaymondKelly said the men “wanted to commitJihad” because they were angry thatAmerican soldiers were killing Muslimsin Afghanistan and Pakistan.

In June 2009, a black convert to Is-lam, 23-year-old Abdulhakim MujahidMuhammad, drove up to an Army-Navyrecruiting station in Little Rock, Ar-kansas, where two soldiers were takinga cigarette break, and opened re. Mr.Muhammed, born Carlos Bledsoe, killedPrvt. William Long, 23 and woundedPvt. Quinton Ezeagwula, 18. Police

stopped and arrested Mr. Muhammadonly 15 minutes after the shooting. Theattack took place during the same weekin which President Obama traveled toEgypt and made his apologetic speechto the Muslim world. Prosecutor LarryJegley explained that Mr. Muhammedtargeted soldiers because of what heconsidered to be their mistreatment of Muslims around the world and explainedthat “if there had been more recruits outthere at the time, he would have killed

more of them, or tried to.”In September 2009, a grand jury

indicted Afghan national NajibullahZazi on a charge of conspiracy to useweapons of mass destruction. The FBIclaims that he was plotting to blow upUS targets and was in possession of plans for making hydrogen peroxide-based bombs. Since his arrest, Mr. Zazihas admitted he received training at aterrorist training camp in Pakistan.

Also in September 2009, FBI agentsarrested 19-year-old Jordanian nationalHosam Maher Husein Smadi. The youngman, who claims to be an al Qaedasupporter, tried to blow up a high-riseofce building in Dallas, Texas with avan lled with what he thought wereexplosives—duds supplied by FBIagents posing as fellow terrorists. Hewas arrested as soon as he dialed a cellphone that he thought would explode

the fake bomb.Mr. Smadi came to the attentionof the FBI because of postings on theInternet six months earlier. Here aresome that the FBI presented at his ar-raignment:

“We shall attack them in their veryown homes. Brother, by God, we shallattack them in a manner that hurts, anattack that shakes the world. Oh Brother, let the backsliders know that the time for

their destruction has come.”“I want to destroy . . . targets . . .

everything that helps America in its waron Arabs will be targeted.”

“By God who created me, there willnot be a retreat at all, even if they takeme to Guantánamo for the rest of mylife. I will never forget Iraq, Palestine,

Mr. Smadi’s target.

Afghanistan, or any land where the callof, ‘There is no God but God, Muham-mad is God’s Messenger’ is raised.”

All of these attacks disappeared fromthe nation’s newsrooms. Many Ameri-cans have either forgotten them or nevereven heard of many of them. That is nodoubt the effect our press and politicallycorrect government want to achieve.

Even during the 2002 Washington,DC sniper attacks, federal officialsplayed down the possibility of terrorism. The snipers turned out to be two blackMuslims—one an illegal alien. JohnAllen Muhammad modeled himself on Osama bin Laded, approved of theSeptember 11 attacks, and reportedlyplanned to kill six white people a dayfor 30 days before setting up a campin Canada where he would train youngblack boys to carry out mass-murderattacks in the United States. He and his

protégé, Lee Boyd Malvo, killed some20 people but neither was characterizedas a terrorist or even charged with a hatecrime. Mr. Muhammad was executed onNovember 10, and Mr. Malvo is servinga life sentence.

Our political leaders either do notunderstand the threat posed by Mus-lims here in the United States or theyare so committed to the dogma of diversity—the idea that every groupis equal in every way and essentiallyinterchangeable—that they refuse todraw even the most obvious conclusions

about certain groups. There are now an estimated six mil-lion Muslims living in the United States, with more than 300,000 living in theDearborn, Michigan, vicinity alone. Some high schools in the area evenserve halal meals to accommodate their90-percent-Muslim student bodies.

There is a large and growing popu-lation—estimated at over 350,000—of converted Muslims inside our prisons. In 2005, The New York State Correc-tional System reported that 18 percentof its total state prison population was

practicing Muslims. Violent, anti-social

inmates are excellent potential recruitsfor terrorist attacks, and some evenget radical propaganda from officialsources.

In November 2001, while the ruinsof the World Trade Center were stillsmoldering, a veteran female Muslimchaplain at New York’s Albion Cor-rectional Facility, Aminah Akbar, told agroup of about 120 inmates, “Bin Ladenis a warrior for Allah, as all Muslimsshould be. Bin Laden is a hero to allMuslims.” She also added, “I am notan American, I just live here.” MissAkbar was red for remarks likely tostir up tension between Muslim andnon-Muslim prisoners, but an arbitrator

ruled her ring was unjustied. With

chaplains like her it is no wonder thatJose Padilla, who was arrested in 2002for planning a “dirty bomb” attack, wasa convicted felon who converted toIslam in prison.

Steve Emerson, an expert on Islamicterrorism, warns that there is almost nomonitoring of what prison imams—full-timers and part-timers—say to inmates. In February 2005, FBI director RobertMueller told the U.S. Senate IntelligenceCommittee that “prisons continue to befertile ground for extremists who exploit. . . a prisoner’s conversion to Islam.”

Some public schools promote Islam.

In 1997, the US-based Council on Is-lamic Education produced a lesson planfor American children called “MuslimHolidays.” It is full of politically cor-rect propaganda about Islam as well astips on how to circumvent regulationsagainst teaching religion in publicschools. More than 4,000 US teachersare reported to have used the lesson planin their classrooms. The same educa-tion system that has done everything inits power to drive children away fromChristianity is now pushing Islam.

We can do very little about thecover-ups taking place inside this na-tion’s newsrooms. It is apparent that theleftists sitting behind network anchor

desks will stop explaining away Muslim

murders only when their own headsare sawed from their bodies. However,we can direct our politicians to defendthis nation. Let us take to the streets inpeaceful, though robust protest, let usll Congressional ofces, and let us castour votes wisely!

Those of us who have not been intel-lectually castrated will point out Islamicterrorism every time we see it. If we lackthe courage to name our enemy or evenrecognize its violent acts we can hardlyexpect to keep our country safe.

In my article “Why the West HasDominated” in the last issue of   American Renaissance I proposed

an explanation for the one exceptionto the otherwise universal correlation

between a races’s average IQ and itsachievements. That exception is that Eu-ropeans and people of European originhave achieved much more than North-East Asians, despite North-East Asians’higher average IQ. My explanation istwo characteristics that have been fun-

damental to Western civilization sinceits beginning and have distinguished itfrom all other civilizations: an obsessionwith self-criticism and a fascination withother civilizations.

Richard Lynn read my article and sentto me an article he wrote on the same

subject. Most readers of  AR have somefamiliarity with Prof. Lynn’s work (see, for example, “The Global Bell Curve,”AR, Dec. 2002 and “Survival of the Fit-test,” AR, June 2007). He has written byfar the most comprehensive studies of the world-wide correlation between theaverage IQs of races, ethnic groups, andnations and their achievements.

The article he sent me is entitled“Race Differences in Intelligence,Creativity and Creative Achievement.”It was published on pages 157-68 of  Mankind Quarterly, 2007 (48, 2). In it,Prof. Lynn points out that Europeansand people of European origin havecontinued to be preeminent to the pres-ent day. Between 1950 and 2006, theywon more than twenty times as manyNobel Prizes and Fields Medals (themost prestigious award for outstand-ing achievement in mathematics) than

North-East Asians.Lynn cites eminent scholars, bothWestern and Oriental, who have as-cribed this lack of North-East Asianachievement to the extremely high valueAsians place on conformity and groupharmony, compared with the individual-ism and competitiveness that character-ize the West. However, until recently, there have been no hard data by whichthis hypothesis could be tested.

Now we have psychometric tests thatmeasure “openness to experience.” Thedenition of this trait is “openness to

feelings and new ideas, and exibilityof thought.” Robert McCrae reviewedresearch on this subject and reportedin an article on pages 1258-1265 of the  Journal of Personality and SocialPsychology, 1987 (52) that the open-

ness to experience scale is correlated ataround 0.4 with a variety of measuresof creativity including divergent think-ing. He concluded, “these data suggestthat creativity is particularly related tothe personality domain of openness toexperience.”

Tests that measure openness to expe-rience have been given throughout theworld. The averages for each countryhave been calculated in relation to an

average set at 50.0 (standard deviation= 10) for the United States. Countries inwhich the main population is European

or of European origin have the highestaverage score: 50.10. North-East Asiancountries have the lowest average score:44.15. That is 0.6 of a standard deviationlower the than European average, whichmore than offsets the 0.4 of a standard

deviation advantage that North-EastAsians have over Europeans in aver-age IQ.

Prof. Lynn also points out that scoreson openness to experience are remark-ably consistent among the countriestested. All North-East Asian countriesscore below all other countries, andall European countries score above allother countries. This consistency sug-gests that these differences are geneticin origin. That conclusion is supportedby a study done in Canada that foundthat Canadians of Chinese origin scoredsignicantly lower in openness to ex-perience than Canadians of Europeanorigin, even though they were raised inthe same cultural environment.

It is extremely signicant that Prof.Lynn arrived at exactly the same con-clusion that I did: Greater European“openness to feelings and new ideas, and

exibility of thought” more than offsethigher North-East Asian intelligence.Prof. Lynn reached this conclusion froma totally different direction from mine, and he used totally different types of evidence. He deduced it from psycho-metric tests; I induced it from millenniaof history. My article also corroborates—with empirical, historical evidence—how important exibility of thoughtand openness to new ideas have been inintellectual and technological progress. In addition, my article shows that racialdifferences in openness to experience

have remained constant over centuries. It thus adds to Prof. Lynn’s evidencethat these differences are geneticallydetermined.

Richard Lynn has read and endorsed this article.

Blacks Attack Whites

In November, police in Denver,Colorado arrested 32 gang members

they say were responsible for a seriesof racially motivated assaults and rob-beries that had gone on for months. Theperps are black; their victims are whiteand sometimes Hispanic. Gang expertssay the Denver spree is part of a grow-ing national trend in which gangs of blacks videotape themselves attackingwhites in trendy tourist districts (whichare supposed to be safe) and then sellthe videos on the underground market.“They knock a young white guy out with

O Tempora, O Mores!one blow to see if his knees will wobbleand surround them and take their mon-ey,” says Rev. Leon Kelly, who runs aDenver gang-prevention program. Rev.

Kelly says gang members “crave thenotoriety” of having their “one-punchknockouts” recorded and sold on theblack market: “They’ll rewind the tapesand watch them over and over.”

Denver Police Chief Gerry Whit-man says four or ve blacks usuallyapproach a victim late at night or earlyin the morning and taunt him with racialslurs. One of them then sucker punchesthe victim, hoping for a knock out. Thegang then steals his wallet and cell

phone. Many victims suffered brokennoses and shattered eye sockets.

On the same day that the Denverpolice announced their arrests, St. Paul

police arrested two blacks for a seriesof attacks on random whites, whichthey videoed and posted on YouTube. The attacks were in broad daylight inresidential neighborhoods. The blacksdid not cover their faces, and appearto have identied themselves by name. All appear to be young Somalis. Thevideo, which is set to music, can beseen on the  American Renaissance website at http://www.amren.com/ videos/20091118somalis-in-mn/index.

Divided Loyalties

Jose Hernandez, the US-born son of illegal Mexican immigrants, has gonewhere no Mexican has gone before—into orbit, courtesy of the US taxpayer.Mr. Hernandez served as a missionspecialist on board the space shuttle

Discovery during its two-week ightlast June. He spent much of his timeaboard Discovery being interviewed bytelevision crews from Mexico (where

he became a media star) and postingmessages on social media websites inSpanish (his native tongue) under the

nickname, “Astro Jose.”NASA ofcials were caught off guardwhen, during an interview after Discov-ery landed, he told a Mexican TV crewthat he thought the US should legalizeillegals because they are important tothe American economy. NASA ofcialssaid Mr. Hernandez was speaking onlyfor himself.

Mr. Hernandez was surprised by thefuss. “It all became a big scandal,” hesays. “Even the lawyers were speaking

to me.” But he has not backed down.In September, he told the host of theTelevisa network’s popular morningshow, about looking down from orbitwith joy on a world “without borders”and explained how “impractical” itwould be to deport millions of illegals.[Tracy Wilkinson, Mexican AmericanAstronaut Isn’t Changing Course onImmigration Stand, Los Angeles Times,Sept. 17, 2009.]

Mr. Hernandez has since traveled toMexico City where he hoped to persuadelawmakers there to create a Mexicanspace program. He says he doesn’tplan to leave NASA, but would like tohelp the Mexican program “get off theground.” [Astronaut Says Mexico NeedsIts Own Space Program, AP, Nov. 24,2009.]

False Alarm

When police discovered the bodyof 51-year-old Census worker Wil-liam Sparkman Jr. in rural Kentuckyin September, the media speculatedbreathlessly that he was the victim of something that pretty much exists onlyin the minds of lefty reporters and SPLCdonors: the “anti-government Right.”Speculation intensied after reports thatSparkman’s nude body had been foundbound and gagged with duct tape, witha noose around his neck, and the word“fed” scrawled on his chest.

Sparkman’s death came at the endof a summer in which mostly white“Tea Party” activists protested Presi-dent Obama’s medical insurance plansand his runaway spending. The mediahad spent several weeks pushing theidea that much of the Tea Party angerwas really hatred of a black man inthe White House, and the Left had theSparkman killing pegged as yet morehate. The Village Voice warned about“rage against Washington . . . especiallyin the rural South” and that Sparkman’sdeath had “all the makings of some anti-

government goober taking his half-witbeliefs way too far.” Cable televisionkept reminding viewers of the Augustincident in which more than a dozenlegally armed protestors showed up at ananti-Obama rally in Phoenix, and hintedat some sinister connection betweenthem and Sparkman’s death.

It was all fantasy. Initial reports thatSparkman had been found hanging in atree were wrong; police say he was onthe ground with the rope tied to a tree.

In late November, the Kentucky StatePolice announced that Bill Sparkmancommitted suicide. Acquaintances saidhe talked about suicide, and that he hadrecently taken out hefty life insurancepolicies that did not pay benets on

suicides. That was why he wanted tomake his death look like a murder. DNAevidence also conrmed that Sparkman

took his own life. [Richard Fausset, Cen-sus Worker’s Death was Suicide, NotAnti-Government Violence, Police Say,Los Angeles Times, Nov. 25, 2009.]

Vindication

In 2006, US District Judge JanetBond Arterton ruled that Frank Ricciand the other white and Hispanic re-ghters denied promotion by the cityof New Haven had not been victimsof discrimination, and threw out theirlawsuit. An appeals court later upheld

Judge Arterton’s ruling, but both wereoverturned by the US Supreme Courtin the 2009 Ricci v. DeStefano decision(see “Supreme Court Throws Whites aBone,” AR, Aug. 2009). The Court sentthe case back to Judge Arterton, who, onNov. 24, issued the ruling she shouldhave made in the rst place: that the civilrights of white New Haven reghterswere violated when city ofcials threwout the results of the 2003 promotionexam only because no blacks passed. She ordered immediate promotions.[Judge: White US Fireghters Must be

Promoted, AP, Nov. 25, 2009.]

Immigrant Contract

There are 15 million immigrantsamong Germany’s 82 million residents, and many have lived in Germany fordecades without learning the languageor trying to assimilate. The Germangovernment now wants to draw up as-similation contracts with them. Immi-gration commissioner Maria Boehmer

says long-term residents will have tolearn German and show “a readinessto take part in society.” What does thatmean? Dr. Boehmer says it includes acommitment to such things as “freedomof speech and sexual equality.” Thereappear to be no enforcement provisionsin the contract. A Turkish immigrantliving in Germany agreed that “it’snot a bad idea for immigrants to gainknowledge of the German language, butGerman people also have to accept thattheir country has turned into a multi-racial society.” [Germany to Draw Up‘Values Contract’ for New Immigrants,BBC News, Nov. 23, 2009.]

Post-racial BNP

Last summer the UK’s Human RightsCommission gave the British NationalParty (BNP) an ultimatum: admit non-

whites or face prosecution for violatingracial equality laws. Fearing that a legal

ght would bankrupt the party, chair-

man and recently elected Member of the European Parliament Nick Grifn(who will address the American Renais-sance Conference in February) decidedto adapt and survive. Assuming themembership approves the change in anupcoming vote, the BNP will now ac-cept non-white members. It even hasits rst applicant, Rajinder Singh, a78-year-old Sikh immigrant who onceserved as a character reference for Mr.Grifn during a race-hatred trial.

Mr. Singh, a retired teacher, is arelentless critic of Islam, who blames

Muslims for the death of his fatherduring the 1947 partition of India, inwhich 2 million people died. “Anyoneescaping that genocide would pray toGod, say never again, and vote for theBNP,” he says. Mr. Singh has beenassociated with the BNP for years, has written for the party’s newspaper,Freedom, and appeared on its Internettelevision channel, BNPTV. He sayshe would be honored to become a card-carrying member. A BNP spokesman

says of Mr. Singh, “He is perhaps thekind of immigrant you want if youare going to have them.” Mr. Singh islikely to be followed by another Sikh,an accountant who goes by the name of Ammo Singh and has helped the BNPhand out leaets critical of Islam.

Sikh groups say they are “appalled.”Indarjit Singh, director of the Networkof Sikh Organizations, says, “Sikhismstresses equality for all human beings. Therefore, Sikhs who are true to theirfaith will have nothing whatsoever todo with any party that favors any onesection of the community.” [Ben Quinnand Jerome Taylor, BNP Signs Its FirstNon-White Member, Independent (Lon-don), Nov. 20, 2009.]

Not What They Fought For

Nicholas Pringle is a British author

who, after hearing tales of his grand-mother’s life during the Second WorldWar, decided to write a book aboutthe experiences of her generation. Heplaced ads in newspapers asking olderpeople to send him their stories. Nearly150 replied, and most had very negativeresponses to two of Mr. Pringle’s ques-tions: “Are you happy with how yourcountry has turned out?” and “What doyou think your fallen comrades wouldhave made of life in 21st-century Brit-ain?” The overwhelming sentimentexpressed by surviving veterans and

civilians is betrayal: “This isn’t theBritain we fought for,” wrote one. “Mypatriotism has gone out of the window,”wrote another. “I sing no song for theonce-proud country that spawned me,”wrote a sailor who fought the Japanese,

“and I wonder why I ever tried.” A com-mando who participated in the raid onDieppe told Mr. Pringle, “Those com-rades of mine who never made it back

would be appalled if they could see theworld as it is today.”

Immigration and transformation of Britain into a multi-racial society toptheir list of complaints: “People comehere, get everything they ask, for free, laughing at our expense. We old peoplestruggle on pensions, not knowing howto make ends meet. If I had my timeagain, would we ght as before? Needyou ask?” Says another, “Our countryhas been given away to foreignerswhile we, the generation who fought forfreedom, are having to sell our homesfor care and are being refused medicalservices because incomers come rst.”“Our British culture is draining awayat an ever increasing pace,” wrote aformer infantry soldier, “and we arealmost forbidden to make any com-ment.” A veteran of the North Africanand Mediterranean campaigns wrote,

“This is not the country I fought for.Political correctness, lack of discipline, compensation madness, uncontrolledimmigration—the ‘do-gooders’ have alot to answer for. If you see youngstersdoing something they shouldn’t and yousay anything, you just get a mouthful of foul language.”

Older Britons have near-universalcontempt for politicians of all parties, with one exception: Enoch Powellwho, in his so-called “Rivers of Blood”speech in 1968, warned that mass im-migration would cause the ills they are

now enduring. Mr. Pringle’s book, TheUnknown Warriors, can be purchased atwww.theunknownwarriors.co.uk. [TonyRennell, ‘This Isn’t the Britain WeFought For,’ Say the ‘Unknown War-riors’ of WWII, Daily Mail (London),

They Learn Quickly

The Florida legislature recentlyapproved a 200 to 400 percent in-crease in fees on hotels that are listedon state-owned signs near Interstate

highway exit ramps. Indian hotelowners, who have learned how thingswork in America, have complaineddirectly to the governor that the newfees are unfair. As Nash Patel, spokes-man of an Indian hotel owners’ asso-ciation explains, “The vast majority of

hotels in the state of Florida are ownedby our association, so we feel that it isa direct impact on us.” [Hoteliers UpsetOver Fees, WCTV-TV (Tallahassee),Nov. 24, 2009.]
