GEORGIA TECH UNIVERSITY?

Just five institutions that play NCAA Division I-A football do not use the word “University” in their official titles. They are: Air Force, Army, Navy, Boston College and Georgia Tech. The Georgia Institute of Technology is the official title, but Georgia Tech will work fine, or just Tech. We would appreciate it if you would use our name in those ways. Thanks.

Head Coach: Bryan Shelton (Georgia Tech, 1989)Assistant Coach: Anca Dumitrescu (Florida State, 2004) Volunteer Assistant Coach: Jeff Wilson

Q&A with Head Coach Bryan SheltonYou have once again challenged your team with eight teams ranked in the nation’s top 20. How do you prepare for such a daunting schedule? “Well, I think that our players understand the schedule and understand what they are going to face when they come to school here at Georgia Tech. Our schedule hasn’t changed too much from year to year over the last eight or nine years. We promise the players that come here that you will get an opportunity to play against the best competition in the country whether it is in conference or out of conference. We continue to go at it the same way and really prepare ourselves for later in the season when we are at the ACC championships and the NCAA tournament and feel like we are prepared to play the best teams because we played them throughout the year.”

Now in your 11th season, how has your coaching style changed over the years since taking the head job at Georgia Tech? “One of the big things I have changed over the 11 years that I have been coaching is the ability to be able to joke with the players. Also, just the ability to understand that everybody is different and we have different personalities amongst the team and sometimes you just can’t lump everybody together and only talk to the team in a broad sense. But, you have to work with the players as individuals, as individual student athletes, and really look at their strengths and their weaknesses. You want to try to build on their strengths. Also, learning how to communicate and talk to each player as an individual and helping them to grow and mature and develop. This is not only on the court but off the court as well. To me, my success as a coach will be more defined with what the players do after they leave college and not just what they do while they are here. Keeping that big picture in mind, which I have been able to do better over the last four or five years, and understand that it is more than just winning matches and it is more than winning championships, but it is helping these players develop as people.”

What are the team goals this spring?“We met with each of the girls individually at the end of the fall and addressed what their individual goals were as well as what the team goals would be for this coming year. Our team wants to continue a winning tradition. We want to feel we are ready and prepared to play every single match. Our goals are to continue to get better

throughout the season so that we can peak towards the end of the year and along the way hopefully we will be able to say we are ACC champions again and NCAA champions. Those are two of the goals that are at the top of our list as far as outcome goals. But how we achieve those outcome goals do not change. We have to put in good work every single day, team chemistry has to be great, the players have to understand their roles and how it all comes together for us will determine how successful we are. We have the right pieces in place and that’s exciting.”

What has been the biggest improvement for this team since they stepped on campus in August? “I think their understanding of the game is one of the things that they have improved upon the most. Understanding how to apply pressure on the court, understanding how their strengths can be utilized in a match play situation. I think that each player on our team has a real solid identity as to who they are as a tennis player and where they are going to find success when they compete. I think that having that understanding allows you to become more confident to rely on your instincts a little more and to not over analyze situations. This is something that gives you piece of mind and I feel like our players are very well equipped now to know how to play the game and how to play it at the highest level. More than anything else, our players are equipped with how to play against different styles of play and what percentage tennis is all about and how they can be effective day in and day out.”

When someone comes out to watch the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team play, what will they see?“The fans that come to our matches will see energy, enthusiasm, positive attitudes out on the court, players that are respectful and who compete hard but play fair. They can also expect to see a team that is on a mission to go out there and improve and be successful. I think they will see an attacking style of play with consistency. A fan that lives in the city of Atlanta will see a team that can apply consistent pressure on an opponent and they’ll see an exciting brand of tennis. This is the best place to be if you want to see high class tennis.”

Though injuries have set her back, Amanda McDowell will lead the team this spring. What kind of leadership to you expect from your lone senior?

“Amanda has been through everything here. She’s obviously been to the very top in collegiate tennis. She has won multiple team national titles, as an individual she has won national titles and so she’s seen the very best and has been a part of it and has been extremely successful. But she’s also experienced some lows; her lows have been due primarily to her injuries that have kind of plagued her over the last year.

“So, for her senior season I think she will be able to lead because she’s already experienced everything. She is going to be a great leader because it’s one thing to put on a smile and a brave face when things are going well but it’s another thing to be able to bounce back. To me, real character is when someone deals with adversity; when they get knocked down and get back up. And for Amanda McDowell and her goals for this season and my goals as well are for her to be the bounce back player of the year. I think that’s who the real champions are; those who face their adversity, who are knocked down and get back up stronger than they were before.”

Not many teams can say they return an NCAA Singles Champion and the No. 1 singles player in the nation. How has the relationship between Amanda McDowell and Irina Falconi made each other better? “Amanda and Irina are able to push one another. I think when you are the elite you know you need to be pushed. When you go to practice every single day you need to feel like you are being challenged so that you continue to grow and develop. And being able to go to practice as the No. 1 player in the country you need to know that you’re still going to be pushed out there on the court. I think it’s very important that you continue to develop. The thing I like most about both of those people is that they are both humble; they both understand that they still have a lot to learn. They are very coachable on the court and they are very team oriented; they’re always looking at the team and how they can help the team. I think the same goes for one another: they push each other and encourage one another and they work well together and have had some successes in the past as doubles partners, and whether they’re playing together or with someone else they’re just going to continue to contribute to the success of our program.”

After a great rookie campaign, sophomore Irina Falconi has continued to get better. She had one of the best falls in the nation and earned the No. 1 singles ranking for it. Where does she go from here? “She dominated this fall, and for her, it’s just about continuing to get better each day. She has set goals for herself that depend on her continuing to work hard every single day and really paying attention to the details of how you get better as a player. I know that she wants to win an NCAA title as well as win an NCAA team title this year so that’s something I know she’ll be shooting for. There is great competition out there, so she’s definitely going to be pushed when we get to the ACC portion of our season. But nationally, there’s great competition so she’s going to have the opportunity to play some of the best players in the country all season long. Playing the best will help make her a sharper player as she moves forward from here.”

Junior Sasha Krupina had a nice fall season. Where does she fit into the mix for the spring?“Sasha has made some of the biggest strides in her game over the last six months, especially in her physical game. So how far can Sasha go this season? I think she’s the one that will determine that. It’s going to come from her work ethic this spring and her consistency and being able

Georgia Tech Women’s TennisGeorgia Tech Women’s Tennis

2010 Georgia Tech Women’s Tennis - Page 5

to be poised not only in practice but in the matches. I expect great things and I truly believe that our team will go in the direction that Sasha goes this spring. If Sasha is an impact player for us this spring, it will make a huge difference for us this season.”

Your lone freshman, Elizabeth Kilborn, showed a lot of promise during the fall. What kind of impact do you expect her to make this spring after getting some collegiate experience in the fall?“I have big expectations for her. Elizabeth is just a great person. I think that she’s a natural-born leader who will develop over the next few years and will ultimately be the leader of this program. But in the meantime, I expect her to continue with her quiet strength as she plays her first season at Georgia Tech. I think she’s going to find a lot of success both on the singles court and on the doubles court. I think that her ability to soak in information and to apply it on the court is unparalleled. The sky is the limit for her. Elizabeth with continue to grow because she is a special kid. She brings a lot to us both on and off the court.”

The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team has historically done well in the classroom. What do you say to your team to stress the importance of doing well in school? “Well first and foremost, we are here to get an education. I was fortunate enough to receive a degree from Georgia Tech so I know how valuable that is and how hard it is to get. So when they first arrive on campus it’s one of the first talks that we have with the team. Also, during the recruiting process we tell each perspective student-athlete ‘if you come to school at Georgia Tech and you work hard, you have the opportunity to get a degree that is recognized around the world.’ Our goal is that they understand their priorities on the team. They understand that in order for them to be successful on the tennis court they have to be successful in the classroom and we put that as the top priority. We feel that we have the best of both worlds. We have the opportunity to give a great education here in the classroom as well as on the tennis court. There are a lot of universities that offer one or the other and this is a place where you can come and get both.”

Q&A with Senior Amanda McDowellWhat are your goals for your final semester at Georgia Tech?“I want to focus on enjoying every second of my last season. I am going to concentrate on staying healthy and giving myself the best possible chance of suc-cess.”

What are the team goals for this season?“I would love to see us continue to develop an identity as a team throughout the season and to be playing our best tennis in April and May. I want to win back the ACC title and put ourselves in a position to win a team NCAA championship at the end of the season.”

How is your back and how will it affect you this season?“My back is continuing to get better. I am trying to be patient and realize that it is a process. I am going to focus on what I can control and stay on top of what I need to do to keep my back healthy.”

As the lone senior on the roster, what do you see your role for this team as?“I want to be a leader for the team and share my past experiences on what it takes to be successful with the other girls. “

The team is ranked No. 10 entering the 2010 spring season, what does the team need to do to finish higher in the rankings?“I try not to focus too much on rankings, but I think if we continue to work hard every day and pay a high attention to details we will continue to improve. We are all very excited about this upcoming season, and we can’t wait to start competing against other teams and having our handwork pay off.”

As you know, being ranked as one of the top play-ers in the nation is not easy. What advice are you giving to sophomore Irina Falconi as she enters the season ranked No. 1?“Being at the top spot is always difficult because everyone is gunning for you. I would say that focus-ing on the big picture and trying to keep improving everyday will help take the focus off of being No. 1. She definitely deserves to be No. 1 and she got there for a reason, so I know she will be just fine.” When you imagine your last official home match (Sunday, April 11 vs. North Carolina), what do you see?“It is crazy to think that in a few months I will be playing my last match at Georgia Tech. I hope that when that time comes I can look back and be proud of what I have accomplished over the years and enjoy the time I have left on the team.”

The team will face another tough schedule in 2010. What does the team need to do to be successful?“We have always been fortunate to have one of the toughest schedules in the country. We are challenged in every single match which helps us to be one of the most mentally tough teams in the country every year. I

know that our coaches will help us to be prepared for every match and I know that the hard work we have been putting in (on and off the court) since August will pay off this season.”

Which of your teammates do you expect to have a breakout season in 2010?“I think our freshman, Elizabeth Kilborn, has improved so much since she first stepped foot on campus. She is a great ball striker and a powerful player with a lot of strengths in her game. I think that she will surprise many people this season.”

How has head coach Bryan Shelton shaped your career at Georgia Tech?“He has taught me so much about the game and about my identity as a player. He has helped make me a tougher player and has been a great motivator. He has also helped me become a better person and I am so grateful to have had him as a coach for four years.”

You have had a lot of great moments at Georgia Tech, which one stands out the most?“There are two standout moments for me. It would definitely be the team 2007 championship and my 2008 singles championship. However, sometimes the small moments that I have shared with my teammates (travel adventures, times when we are joking around in the locker room, team dinners, etc) are some of my favorite memories.”

What are your plans after you have used up your eligibility and graduate from Georgia Tech?“I am planning on playing on the pro tour for at least two years after I graduate from Georgia Tech.”

Entering his 11th season at the helm of the Yellow Jacket women’s tennis program, Bryan Shelton is one of the most successful coaches in school history - he is one of just five coaches in the history of Georgia Tech Athletics to guide a team to a national title, and the only one to capture an NCAA Team Championship. The 2007 ITA National Coach of the Year and four-time Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year has directed the Yellow Jackets to three national titles - one outdoor (NCAA) and two indoor (ITA) - and his teams have captured at least a share of the ACC regular season title four times.

One year after guiding the women’s tennis team to its great-est achievement to date -- winning the 2007 NCAA Championship -- Shelton added another first to his already-long resume: coaching the first Yellow Jacket to win an NCAA Individual title as sophomore Amanda McDowell swept through the 2008 NCAA Singles Champion-ships en route to capturing the crown.

When Bryan Shelton returned to his alma mater as the head coach for the women’s team in 2000, the Yellow Jackets had yet to even appear in an NCAA Tournament, had yet to finish higher than fourth in the ACC, and had yet to have a player earn All-America honors. Since his arrival, Georgia Tech has made 10 NCAA Tournament ap-pearances, captured four ACC regular season titles, won three ACC Tournament championships and has had 10 All-America and 20 All-ACC selections.

He has also had one conference Player of the Year and two confer-ence Rookies of the Year during his tenure and has twice been named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s South Region Coach of the Year while being tabbed the ACC Coach of the Year on four occasions. Under his tutelage, one player has been named the ITA National Player of the Year, ITA National Player to Watch and South Region Rookie of the Year, eight have been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Teams, and 49 have been named to the ACC Honor Roll. Five of his student-athletes have earned the prestigious

Bobby Dodd Scholarship while two have earned the coveted Honda Award for Tennis.

The national championship didn’t come as a surprise to most people surrounding the program, as Shelton had steadily built a cham-pionship team over the seven years prior. As a matter of fact, his .702 winning percentage is the sixth-highest among ALL coaches in Georgia Tech history, behind former football coaches John Heisman (.779) and Bobby Dodd (.713), former softball coach Ehren Earley-wine (.722), former volleyball coaches Shelton Collier (.704) and Bond Shymansky (.729).

The 2007 NCAA Championship run began after a successful fall campaign. The Yellow Jackets embarked on a gruelling dual-match schedule that began in Madison, Wisc., where they snapped the three-time defending national champion Stanford Cardinal’s NCAA-re-cord 89-match winning streak with a thrilling 4-3 victory in the semi-finals, then shut down Notre Dame, 4-2, in the championship match to capture the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor title in early February. The Jackets went on to post an 8-3 record in the month of February and, after dropping a 4-3 match at Clemson to begin the month of March, embarked upon a 21-match winning streak to conclude the season, culminating with NCAA Championship in May.

Georgia Tech earned at least a share of the ACC regular season title for the third-consecutive season in 2007, finishing 10-1 in the league to tie with Clemson. Tech breezed to its third ACC Championship with a 4-0 victory over Duke in the quarterfinals and a 4-2 win against North Carolina in the semis before dispatching Miami in the title match for the third straight year, 4-1. Almost a month later, Shelton’s squad began its run to the championship with a pair of 4-0 victories against Furman and Kentucky in the NCAA Atlanta Regional before moving on to Athens, Ga., home of longtime rival the University of Georgia, for the remainder of the NCAA Championships.

In Athens, Shelton relied on a steady mixture of energetic underclass-men and experienced veterans to continue advancing through the tournament. The Jackets received key singles victories from seniors Alison Silverio and Tarryn Rudman, as well as underclassmen Christy Striplin and Amanda McDowell, to get the team over the hump of the NCAA Sweet 16, where Tech had seen its title hopes end in 2005 and 2006. Shelton’s squad then went on to post 4-2 victories over Notre Dame, California and UCLA over the next three days to earn the former Yellow Jacket All-American his first national title.

Georgia Tech concluded the 2007 ranked atop the national rankings for the first time in history and had a pair of players earn All-America honors. Whitney McCray earned her first All-America honor by earning the No. 3 seed in the 2007 NCAA Doubles Champion-ships, teaming with Kristi Miller, who earned All-America honors in both singles and doubles for the second-consecutive season. Overall, Shelton had two members of the squad compete in the NCAA Singles

top-20, and Tech concluded the year ranked 21st in the nation after finishing with a 15-10 dual-match record. That same season, Wong became the first Yellow Jacket to represent the Institute in the NCAA Singles Championships, and Shelton became the first Georgia Tech women’s tennis coach to earn ACC Coach of the Year honors.

The 2003 team proved to be even more successful for Georgia Tech, concluding the season with a 14-7 dual-match record and the school’s fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Jackets also set a record with five wins against ACC opponents in 2003, while Wong earned her second straight appearance in the NCAA Singles Championship after earning her third all-ACC honor. That same season, Kelly Anderson became the first Georgia Tech women’s tennis player to earn ACC Rookie of the Year honors.

Shelton guided his 2004 team to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in his five-year tenure, advancing to the second round for the fourth time in the program’s history. The Yellow Jackets accumulated numerous honors during the year, beginning with earning the inau-gural ITA National Team Sportsmanship Award in March and conclud-ing with winning the ACC Sportsmanship Award and being named an ITA All-Academic Team for the first time in school history. With both Anderson and Lyndsay Shosho earning all-conference honors, 2004 marked the first time since 1989 that two players earned all-ACC honors in the same season. Shosho became just the second player in the program’s history to represent Georgia Tech in the NCAA Singles Championship, while Anderson garnered GTE/CoSIDA Academic all-District III accolades and was named the prestigious Bobby Dodd Scholarship recipient. She also joined Sekita Grant, Maria Nieto and Alison Silverio as ITA Scholar-Athlete honorees.

The 2005 team accomplished multiple “firsts” for the program, including first ACC Regular Season Championship, first ACC Tourna-ment Championship, and first appearance in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Championships. The Jackets concluded 2005 with a record-breaking 21 wins and nine conference victories en route to the first ACC Tournament Championship for any Yellow Jacket tennis team. Shelton was named the ACC and ITA South Region Coach of the Year and had three all-ACC honorees in Kristi Miller, Dasha Potapova and Alison Silverio, while Miller also wrapped up the ACC and ITA South Region Rookie of the Year honors. The 2005 season also provided another “first” in the program’s history, as Miller became the first Yellow Jacket to earn All-America honors when she was selected as one of the 16 seeds in the 2005 NCAA Singles Cham-pionship, where she advanced to the

played in the NCAA Doubles Championships. Miller was again tabbed an Academic All-American in 2007, while seniors Alison Silverio and Tarryn Rudman took home the ITA’s South Region Sportsmanship Awards. Seven members of the team finished the season ranked in the top 100 in singles, while three Yellow Jacket doubles teams earned national rankings at the season’s end.

In his first season at the helm, Shelton guided Georgia Tech to the first NCAA Tournament berth in school history, recording a victory over 25th-ranked Washington in the first round of the 2000 NCAA Regional in Los Angeles, Calif. The Yellow Jackets’ No. 29 national ranking in the final polls was the highest end-of-the-year ranking ever for Georgia Tech. Under Shelton’s guidance, Jaime Wong earned the first of her three all-ACC honors, while Laura Ozolins garnered first-team GTE Academic All-District III accolades.

Shelton guided Tech to its second NCAA Tournament appearance in 2001, while Wong was named to the all-conference team for the second-straight season. Ozolins also garnered conference honors in 2001, winning the ACC Flight 6 Singles Championship.

The Jackets made their third NCAA appearance, reaching the second round of the postseason tournament, in yet another successful season for Georgia Tech in 2002, while climbing to a record-high 17th in the nation in the polls. The No. 17 ranking was the first time in program history that the Yellow Jackets had been ranked in the

teamed with Silverio to become the first tandem to represent Georgia Tech in the NCAA Doubles Championship.

The team reached as high as No. 4 in the polls during the season and concluded the year ranked sixth in the nation, both of which were new marks for any women’s sports team in Georgia Tech history. Anderson again earned GTE/CoSIDA Academic all-District honors, and joined Miller as Georgia Tech’s ITA Scholar-Athlete recipients for 2005. The team also earned its second straight ACC

Sportsmanship Award and was named an ITA All-Academic Team for the second consecutive year.

The winning tradition continued in 2006, as Georgia Tech again captured the ACC Championship and made its second-straight ap-pearance in the Sweet-16 at the NCAA Championships. For his work, Shelton was again named the ITA South Region Coach of the Year, and the Yellow Jackets finished the season with a record-high 23 victories and a final ranking of No. 7 in the nation. He had two play-ers to earn All-America honors, as Kristi Miller was named a singles and doubles All-American while Lyndsay Shosho earned Doubles All-America honors in her final season on the Flats. Miller also achieved another first for the program, as she became the first Yellow Jacket to earn the No. 1 ranking in singles play, before finishing the season ranked No. 2. For her outstanding performance, Miller accumulated numerous awards, including the Honda Award for Tennis and the ITA National Player to Watch. She also became Tech’s first Academic All-American, while Kelly Anderson was named CoSIDA Academic All-District for the third-straight year. Rounding out the accolades for the Jackets were ITA South Region Cissie Leary Award for Sportsman-ship winner Alison Silverio and Academic All-ACC members Anderson, Miller, Shosho and Silverio.

In his most recent season on the Flats, Shelton led the Yellow Jacket team made up of six underclassmen to the programs fifth straight Round of 16 appearance at the NCAA Tournament and a final national ranking of No. 8. Freshman Irina Falconi became the fifth Jacket to earn All-American honors in the history of the program.

Prior to returning to his alma mater, Shelton spent over a year as a national coach with the United States Tennis Association. Before joining the USTA coaching ranks, Shelton spent nine years on the ATP Tour, winning two singles and a pair of doubles titles prior to his

retirement following the 1997 U.S. Open.

Shelton’s hiring in the summer of 1999 reunited him with former Georgia Tech teammate and doubles partner Kenny Thorne, who serves as Georgia Tech’s head men’s tennis coach.

Shelton and Thorne both lettered for the Yellow Jackets from 1985-88 and helped Georgia Tech to an overall 70-38 dual-match record and a 20-7 ACC mark during their four seasons. As seniors in 1988, the duo guided Tech to a school-record 26 wins, which included a 7-0 run through the ACC, a second place finish in the conference tourna-ment and Tech’s first appearance in the NCAA Championships.

Shelton earned all-ACC honors in each of his four seasons on the Flats and garnered All-America honors in 1988. He advanced to the quarterfinals of the 1988 NCAA Singles Championship, falling to eventual champion Robbie Weiss.

Shelton ranks second on the Jackets’ career singles wins list with 101 victories and was inducted into the Georgia Tech Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993 and the Georgia Tennis Hall of Fame in 2002. He was also inducted into the Huntsville-Madison County Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007.

Following his collegiate career, Shelton won his first tour title at the Hall of Fame Championships in 1991, becoming the first African-American to win an ATP event since Arthur Ashe in 1978. He repeated as the singles champion at Newport in 1992 and also claimed a pair of doubles titles, winning the 1994 Mexican Open with Francisco Montana and the 1997 Australian Hardcourt Championship with Patrick Rafter. In 1993, Shelton was a finalist in the Mixed Doubles at the French Open.

A six-time participant at Wimbledon, Shelton defeated second-seeded Michael Stich in the first round of the tournament in 1994 en route to a berth in the Round of 16. Shelton climbed as high as 55th in the ATP singles rankings and also played in seven U.S. Opens, six Aus-tralian Opens and four French Opens while posting victories against the likes of Andre Agassi, Thomas Muster, Richard Krajicek and Todd Martin.

After retiring from the tour, Shelton coached MaliVai Washington, a 1996 Wimbledon finalist, until being named a USTA National Coach. With the USTA, Shelton assisted with the development of some of the top juniors in the Southeast, covering North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennes-see and Kentucky.

The Tradition Consistency. It is the mark of true excellence in any endeavor. However, in today’s intercollegiate athletics, competition has become so balanced and so competitive that it is virtually impossible to maintain a high level of consistency. Yet the Atlantic Coast Conference has defied the odds. Now, in its 57th year of competition, the ACC has long enjoyed the reputation as one of the strongest and most competitive intercollegiate conferences in the nation. And that is not mere conjecture, the numbers support it. Since the league’s inception in 1953, ACC schools have captured 113 national championships, including 60 in women’s competition and 53 in men’s. In addition, NCAA individual titles have gone to ACC student-athletes 125 times in men’s competition and 84 times in women’s action. Women’s tennis made a significant contribution to that success in 2009, as ACC champion Duke brought home the conference’s second women’s national title and freshman Mallory Cecil captured the NCAA singles championship. Sixteen singles players – including automatic qualifier Julia Cohen of Miami and defending national champion Amanda McDowell of Georgia Tech –were chosen to represent the Atlantic Coast Conference in the 2009 NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Singles Championships. Seven ACC doubles teams were also selected to the field.

A History The Atlantic Coast Conference was founded on May 8, 1953, at the Sedgefield Inn near Greensboro, N.C., with seven charter members - Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest - drawing up the conference by-laws. On December 4, 1953, conference officials met again at Sedgefield and officially admitted the University of Virginia as the league’s eighth member. The first, and only, withdrawal of a school from the ACC came on June 30, 1971, when the University of South Carolina tendered its resignation. The ACC operated with seven members until April 3, 1978, when the Georgia Institute of Technology was admitted. The Atlanta school had withdrawn from the Southeastern Conference in January of 1964. The ACC expanded to nine members on July 1, 1991, with the addition of Florida State University. The conference expanded to 11 members on July 1, 2004, with the addition of the University of Miami and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. On October 17, 2003, Boston College accepted an invitation to become the league’s 12th member starting July 1, 2005.

The 2007 ACC Champions

ACC Tournament Notes: From 1977 to 1982 the conference champion was determined solely on the basis of a post-season tournament with points awarded on individual play. From 1983 to 1985 the conference champion was based on points awarded for both regular-season and tournament play. The regular season results accounted for approximately 40 percent of the total and the tournament, the remaining 60 percent. From 1986 to 1989, the conference champion was determined by a three-day, single-elimination dual match tournament with a playback to determine places one through eight. Since 1990 the conference champion has been deter-mined by a single-elimination dual match tournament with no playback.
