Marian university tennis courts
The Marian University Tennis Courts are the home to the men’s and women’s tennis teams at Marian University. The courts underwent full reconstruction as part of the construction of St.Vincent Health Field, which was completed in 2008.
The eight regulation courts were repositioned, reconfigured, and underwent a facelift. The red and green paint scheme of prior years was replaced by a blue and green paint combination. Brand new steel fencing was installed on the perimeter of the courts and in between two banks of three courts, and it also features a blue windscreen around three sides allowing one side for a comfortable viewing experience.
The completion of the Marian University Softball Field, which is adjacent to the tennis courts, gave the tennis programs space for storing court maintenance equipment and playing equipment underneath the press box.
The open side of the courts allows for two sets of bleachers to be placed for an optimal viewing experience, while an open platform, utilized for hospitality at St.Vincent Health Field, is also used as a viewing deck for tennis matches where spectators can set up lawn chairs to view the matches.
The courts are another sign that Marian University is On the Move and Making History!

Cassie Mackell is entering her third season as head coach at Marian University.
In just two seasons at the helm of the women’s tennis program, Mackell has made a significant impact. Last season, she led the Knights to a 13-7 overall record and a 6-2 mark in the Mid-Central College Conference. She was named MCC Coach of the Year, coached the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional champion, and had two of her starters named All-Conference for the first time in seven years.
Mackell followed the Knights’ first-ever trip to the NAIA Regional tournament in 2007-08 with a 12-9 mark in her first season. She was without the services of two of the most successful players in school history as they had graduated before her rookie campaign, but she was able to steer the Knights to a winning season in her first year.
A four-year player at Milligan College in Tennessee, Mackell was named the Appalachian Athletic Conference Sportswoman of the Year as a senior, which is one of the conference’s highest honors. In her four years, she went 48-18 at No. 1 singles and was named NAIA Region XII Player of the Year as a junior. She was AAC runner-up at No. 1 singles in 2003 and 2004 and was AAC champion at No. 1 doubles in 2003 and 2005. She was also named the 2006 NAIA ITA/Arthur Ashe Leader and Sportsmanship Award winner in 2006.
In addition to her duties as head women’s tennis coach, Mackell serves the Department of Athletics as administrative assistant, where she oversees day-to-day operations. She recently got married and resides in Greenfield, Indiana.

Steve Mackell enters his third season as assistant coach with the Knights’ women’s tennis program.
Mackell is no stranger to the sport of tennis. He was a four-year letter winner at Scecina Memorial High School in Indianapolis and earned team Most Valuable Player honors in each of his four years.
He attended Georgetown College in Kentucky from 2001-05 and played No. 1 singles and doubles in 2004 and 2005. He was team Most Valuable Player in 2005 and earned All-Conference honors in singles and doubles in 2004 and 2005.
He recently got married and resides in Greenfield, Indiana.

2010–11 season previeWThird-year head coach Cassie Mackell is expecting
big things from the women’s tennis team in 2010-11.Coming off a 13-7 season in 2009-10, the
Knights were one win short of a runner-up finish last season with a 6-2 conference record. Mack-ell was named Mid-Central College Conference Coach of the Year for a season that saw three re-cords fall, and had the program’s first Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional champion crowned.
Just one letter winner was lost from last season, and Coach Mackell is excited as four new freshmen join 10 returners for the 2010-11 season. The returners include two seniors, three juniors, and five sophomores to compliment the competitive freshmen class.
“I believe some of our returners will be key contributors for this season,” said Mackell. “I am looking forward to what they can this season.”
Senior Dana Reynolds leads the way for the Knights as she returns and looks to take over the No. 1 singles position. She spent last season at No. 2 and posted a solid 17-12 record with a 5-3 mark in the MCC. She won a trio of matches at the ITA regional and won a pair at the DePauw Invitational. Coach Mackell is expecting Reynolds to step into a leadership position for 2010-11 and is excited to give her the opportunity to lead the Knights.
“Dana made it on the All-MCC team and the semis of our regional tournament,” said Mackell. “I think she will be a huge asset to our team.”
Senior Alyssa Richard returns after she spent last season at No. 6 singles. She finished the season with a 13-12 overall record and finished .500 (4-4) in conference play. It was her first season of top flight competition, and Coach Mackell is excited to see where she will end up in 2010-11.
A trio of juniors is anchored by 2008 MCC No. 6 singles champion Alyson O’Conner. O’Conner followed up a a 15-2 freshman season with an 18-7 mark at No. 4 and No. 5 singles. She is a combined 12-2 in the MCC in two seasons of competition. Coach Mackell is expecting O’Conner to step in to a leadership role as a junior. She also expects O’Conner to continue her stellar career at doubles. She is 27-18 in two seasons in doubles play.
“Aly is going to make a difference in doubles,” said Mackell. “She worked very hard this sum-mer and I think she will make a very big step for the success of our team.”
Another anchor for the junior class is Maria Berry. Berry set the school record for doubles vic-tories in a season with 16 in 2009-10, but Coach Mackell is expecting big things from her this year. Berry 22-21 in singles play in two seasons, but is 10-6 in conference play.
“She spent time in Kentucky playing over the summer so I am interested to see how she has improved,” said Mackell. “She won the most doubles last season and I am excited to see where her improvement takes us.”
Junior Samantha Jo Crump is also expected to provide a spark for the Knights this season. She is seen as the quintesssential vocal leader and one of the positive forces on the team. Coach Mackell is expecting big things from Crump this season.
Sophomore Tiffany Schendel saw the most ac-tion out of a large group of five sophomores after she went 15-12 in her rookie campaign. She also had a stellar freshman season with a 6-2 mark in MCC play. Coach Mackell sees good things on the horizon for Schendel.
“Tiffany, Alyssa, and Sam will be returning to fight for some spots,” said Mackell. “It should be interesting with a strong freshman class.”
Sophomores Amy Nocton and Hannah Rueg-segger provide a lift in doubles competition and will be figures in determining the lineup. Nocton went 12-11 with three different doubles partners in 2009-10, but has shown signs of being a strong doubles player. Ruegsegger is another positive force on the team and Coach Mackell is expecting a lot out of both of them this season.
Sophomores Casey DeLucenay and Hillary Car-penter are two young players that have a shot at cracking the lineup in 2010-11. Coach Mackell is impressed with each of their work ethics and sees good things in their futures.
The second freshman class for Mackell is loaded with talent from top to bottom. Four ultra-competitive freshmen that each can battle for a spot in the starting lineup were brought in for this campaign.

2010–11 season previeW“We have a strong freshman class coming in,”
Mackell said. “That makes for an interesting season of competition for the six spots in the lineup.”
Freshman Olivia Pursell is expected to compete for any of the top three positions in the lineup. The Westfield, Ind., native is a solid player with all the tools to improve as she continues her col-lege career. Coach Mackell expects her to step in quickly and contend in her rookie season.
“Olivia played at Westfield High School and will be fighting for a singles and doubles spot,” said Mackell.
Freshman Kemi Adeyemi, an All-State honor-able mention in 2009, is a former sectional champion who can contend for any of the top three positions. A Lafayette, Ind., native, Adeyemi is a strong hitter with a tendency to hit winners. She is a strong server and can play serve-and-volley throughout a match. Mackell is excited to see what Adeyemi can do this season.
“Kemi is a player we are really looking forward to seeing contribut as a freshman,” said Mackell. “We believe she and the other freshmen will contend for the lineup.”
Freshman Brittney Horlacher was a two-time All-Conference selection in high school and was the team’s Most Valuable Player twice. She wa part of a conference championship team, and she is expected to contend for a spot in the start-ing lineup.
“Brittney plays USTA tournaments year-round and that is good,” said Mackell. “She will defi-nitely be making a strong contribution this year.”
Freshman Lauren Paras was one of the first commitments for the 2010-11 season and Coach Mackell is excited to see her compete. The Bishop Chatard graduate had a 42-24 career re-cord at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, and was a three-time All-City selection. Mackell is impressed with her ability to compete and expects her to provide big things in 2010-11.
“Lauren played this past summer with Olivia so that is a nice dynamic,” said Mackell. “She will contend for a spot in the lineup and we just have to see where the chips fall.”
ScheDule PrevieWThe Knights have steadily improved over the
last five years and Coach Mackell is looking to take the program to the next step.
“My goal for this team is to contend for the win over Taylor,” said Mackell. “We finished third last season and I really think we have a shot to get into the top two this year.” The Knights have a schedule loaded with strong competition and in the MCC, nothing is a guarantee.
After opening on the road at Calumet-St. Joseph (08.28) and Bethel College (08.30), the Knights return to Marian University for a three-match home stand that includes Saint Francis (Ind.) (09.02), Spring Arbor (09.04), and Hunting-ton (09.09).
A trip to Grace College (09.11) is an interlude before a non-conference match against Ander-son (09.15) at home.
It is at this point that things get tough for the Knights. They head to defending MCC runner-up Taylor University on September 18 before head-ing to defending champion Indiana Wesleyan on September 21. Those matches will prove key to the success of the 2010-11 season.
The Wilson/ITA Regionals are on September 23-25 before a road match at Goshen (09.28) and a home match against Olivet Nazarene (09.29) close out the regular season.
The MCC Tournament was where the Knights placed third last season, and Coach Mackell is hoping for more in 2010-11.
