The Creative Writing Concentration, aprogramledbyoutstandingpublishedfacultywriters that provides additional opportuni-tiesforstudentstohonetheircreativewritingskills, earn coveted prizes and become pub-lishedwritersthemselves. PresidentialInternationalScholar,anop-portunity for an outstanding, intellectuallygiftedstudenttovisitotherpartsoftheworldresearching specific academic areas of inter-est.

Woffordoffersdistinctivelearningoppor-tunitiesthatsetitapartfromotherliberalartscolleges. Athletic Director

Richard Johnson is in his tenth year as directorof athletics at Wofford College. The former headbasketballcoachhasbeenaninstrumentalfigureoncampusforover25years. JohnsonofficiallybeganhisnewdutiesonDec.3,2001.In17yearsasheadbasketballcoachatWofford(1985-2002),Johnsonhada100percentgraduationrateforallplayerswhocompletedtheireligibilityunderhim.Hewastherunner-upforSoConCoachoftheYearhonorstwiceintheTerriers’fiveseasonsofleagueplayunderhim.His200thwinwasa79-74victoryatClemsonduringthe1999-2000campaign. A1976graduateofTheCitadel,JohnsoncametoWoffordafterservingnineyearsasabasketballassistantathisalmamaterunderthen-coachandnowathleticdirectorLesRobinson. JohnsonalsoholdsanMBAfromTheCitadel. DuringhisWoffordcoachingtenure,JohnsonguidedtheTerriersfromNAIAmembershiptoNCAADivisionIIin1988,DivisionIIndependentstatusin1995andtheSouthernConferencein1997. Over the past several years as athletic director, he also has been adrivingforcebehindthedevelopmentofseveralfacilityprojects.RussellC. King Field and Switzer Stadium returned baseball to campus in2003.TheRichardsonBuildingwasrenovatedin2008,whiletheJoeE.TaylorAthleticBuildingandagolfpracticefacilitywerecompletedin2009.Johnsonhasalsobeenresponsibleforthegrowthoftheathleticendowment,withalong-termgoalofendowingallscholarshipsinthedepartment. He currently chairs the Southern Conference’s men’s basketballcommittee and is a member of the NCAA’s Men’s Basketball IssuesCommittee. JohnsonandhiswifeCarol,havetwodaughters,LindsayandLauren,andason,Rich.Lindsayisa2001Woffordgraduate,LaurengraduatedfromWoffordin2003andRichisasophomoreattheUniversityoftheSouth.TheJohnsonsalsohavethreegrandchildren.LindsayandBradLowryaretheparentsofLouisaandBradyLowry,whileLaurenandReeceMcWilliamsaretheparentsofMacMcWilliams.

Dr.JameicaHill,aprofessorofchemistry,isinherfifthyearastheFacultyAthleticRepresentative(FAR)atWofford. InherroleastheFAR,Dr.HillrepresentsWoffordtotheNationalCollegiateAthleticAssociationandtheSouthernConference.TheFARisresponsibleforcertifyingtheeligibilityofstudent-athletesandassuringintegrityintheeligibilityprocess.Inadditiontosupervisingathleticspolicies, theFARalso servesasa liaisonbetween the facultyand thestudentathletes,lookingoutfortheirindividualwell-beingwithregardtoacademicsandathletics. Hill, anativeofDueWest, S.C. andamemberofPhiBetaKappa,earnedherPh.D.degreeininorganicchemistryatClemsonUniversity,whereshewasaGraduateTeachingAssistantoftheYear.ShereceivedWofford’s1995MartinLutherKingJr.HumanitarianAwardandwasalsoanassociatedirectorforasummerprogramthatwasfundedbyagrantfromtheHowardHughesMedicalCenter. Hill’sinterestinathleticshasbeenalifelongone.Herfatherwasahighschoolcoach,andhertwochildrenarecompetitiveinmanydifferentsports.AsaprofessoratWoffordandthewifeofJasonHill’89,aformerWofford quarterback and assistant coach, Hill has always supportedTerrierathletics.HerdaughterShelbyisactiveincompetitivecheerleading(Level5),whilehersonJ.L.playsfootballaswellasAAUbasketballonateambasedinCharlotte.HillwasalsoacheerleaderforthefootballandbasketballteamsasastudentatWofford.

Dr.BenjaminBernardDunlaptookofficeasWofford’spresidentinJuly2000,becomingonlythe10thchiefexecutiveinthe150-yearhistoryofthePhiBetaKappa liberal arts college. A nativeof Columbia, S.C., Dunlap graduatedsummacumlaudefromSewanee:TheUniversity of the South in 1959. HeattendedOxfordUniversityasaRhodesScholar and Harvard University as agraduate student, receiving his Ph.D.in English Language and Literaturein1967.Fromthatyearuntil1993,heheldacademicappointmentsatHarvardandtheUniversityofSouthCarolina,wherehewasawardedboth theUSCTeacherof theYearAwardand theuniversity’sRussellAwardforDistinguishedScholarship.Duringthattime,hetwiceservedasaFulbrightSeniorLecturerinBangkok,Thailand,andChiangMai,Thailand,andwasalsoamemberoftheinauguralclassofU.S.-JapanLeadershipFellowsinTokyo.In1993,heacceptedanappointmentatWoffordCollegeastheChapmanFamilyProfessorintheHumanities,apositionhestillholds.In2000,hebecamethe10thpresidentofWoffordCollege. Dunlap’s academic fields include literature, intellectual history,Asianstudies,filmhistoryandcriticism,fictionwriting,andthearts.Onthosesubjectsandothers,especiallyleadershipandhighereducation,hehaslecturedandspokenwidelyinthiscountryandabroadincludingan appearance as one of “Fifty Remarkable People” at the 2007 TEDConferenceinMonterey.AfrequentmoderatorfortheAspenInstitute’sExecutiveandC.E.O.SeminarsaswellasitsHenryCrownFellowshipandsuchaffiliatedprogramsastheExecutiveSeminarAsia,theFacultySeminarsatWye, theAspen-RodelFellowship, theAfricaLeadershipInitiative,theCentralEuropeanLeadershipInitiative,andtheLibertyFellowship of South Carolina, he has also designed and moderatedseminarsinEurope,Africa,andtheUnitedStatesforcorporateclientsas varied as the Netflix Corporation, Young & Rubicam, the WatersGlobalForum,theNovaChemicalCorporation,andtheArabBankingCorporation. Dunlap’s many publications include poems, essays, anthologies,guides,andoperalibrettiaswellastwonovelsinmanuscript,FamousDogsoftheCivilWarandSunshine:TheAutobiographyofaGenius.As a writer-producer andon-cameratalentforpublictelevision, he has been amajorcontributor tomorethan 200 programs, forwhichhehaswonnumerousnational and internationalawards,and,forfourandahalfyearsinthe1970’sand80’s,heperformedassoloistandprincipaldancerfortheColumbiaCityBallet. Since 1963, he hasbeenmarriedtoAnneBoydDunlap. They have threegrownchildren.In2006,hewas awarded an honorarydoctoratebyhisalmamater,Sewanee:TheUniversityoftheSouth.

Entering his ninthseason at the helm ofthe Terrier volleyballprogramisheadcoachCoreyHelle.Underhisguidance,theWoffordprogram has contin-ued tomakeprogress

onthecourt,intheclassroomandbeyond.Witha95-156careerrecord,Helleiscur-

rentlythesecondwinningestcoachinprogramhistory,andisthewinningestcoachsincetheschool’stransitiontoDivisionIin1995.

Lastfall,HelleledtheWoffordTerrierstoan18-15overallrecord,themostwinsduringhistenureasheadcoachandthemostwinsforthe program since its transition to DivisionI. Seniors Joanna Sudduth, Shanna Hughesand Sarah Palmer each finished their careersas members of the 1,000 career digs club. Inaddition, Hughes finished her career with1,046kills,becomingonlythefourthplayerinschoolhistorytoreachthe1,000careermarkinbothdigsandkills.

In2008,then-juniorJoannaSuddathwasnamedtheSouthernConferencePlayeroftheWeekfortheweekofSeptember12,markingthefirsttimeinschoolhistoryaTerrierearnedthe accolade. Helle also led the Terriers to awin at the USC-Upstate Volleyball Classic,and placed Suddath and Stacey Byrd on theall-tournament team. 2008 also marked thefirstwinfortheTerriersoverDavidsonsince2004andthefirstvictoryoverGeorgiaSouth-ernsince2001.

In2007,fiveofHelle’splayersearnedall-tournament honors at the various in-seasoneventsinwhichtheTerrierscompeted.Then-sophomoreJoannaSuddathgarneredaspotonallthreetournamentsquadsinadditiontocol-lectingMVPaccoladesattheseason-openingFatz Café Volleyball Classic, hosted by USCUpstate,whichWoffordwon.TheTerriersalsocaptured the tournament crown at the SCSUSpikeFestinOrangeburg,S.C.

corey helleIn 2006, Helle earned his 50th career

victorywitha3-0 sweepoverTheCitadel inCharleston,S.C.,Sept.30,2006.

In 2005, he guided the program to itsfirst-ever sweep over Furman and the team’sfirst-evervictory intheSouthernConferenceTournament,withanopeningroundtriumphagainst Elon. Freshman Brittany Thompsongarneredall-tournamenthonorsat theJasperClassic, while remaining in the hunt for theleague’stopfreshmanhonorallseason.

Alsothatseason,Hellehadtwostudent-athletes,KatieSobczykandAngelaBerry, in-ducted into Phi Beta Kappa. Sobczyk gradu-ated with the highest grade point average ofanystudent-athleteonWofford’scampusearn-ingtheHooleAward.Finally,everyfreshmanmentoredatlocalelementaryschoolsinanef-forttogivebacktoSpartanburg.

UnderHelle’sleadership,theWoffordvol-leyballrecordbookhasbeenvirtuallyrewrit-ten.CoachHelle’sfirstfourseniorclassesownthe majority of the all-time individual andteamschoolrecords.The2006class,ledbyset-terRheaDeJesus,have theirnames through-outthelists.The2005seniorclassboastsAn-dreaDuke,theTerriers’all-timeleaderinkillsandserviceaces,and is theonlyplayer tobenamedtotheAll-SouthernConferenceteam.The headliner for 2004 was Lindsay Lyman,Wofford’sfirstlibero.Hernamecanbefoundinseveralofthedigrecords.LymanwasalsoinductedintoPhiBetaKappa.Helle’sfirstse-niorclass,in2003,isthemostdecorated.Thatclass, ledbyMollyBushongandCurrieGos-sett,ownseveralindividualandteammarks.

Since being named head coach, he hassent10ofhis13seniorsabroadtostudy.Helleencourageshisplayerstostudyandexperiencelife in a foreign land, from Europe to SouthAfrica.

Priortobeingnamedtheprogram’sfifthhead coach since its inception in 1980, heservedasanassociateheadcoach(2001)andtwo-year assistant coach (1999-2000) under

Dr.JoeBowman.Before arriving in

Spartanburg,heservedasanassistantcoachatFur-man(1997-98)andSouthCarolina (1995-96). Bothof those programs regis-tered 20-win campaignswhilehewasamemberofthestaff.

WiththeGamecockshis primary duties werecoaching the setters andteaching technical de-fense. The 1996 squadposted a 22-8 overall re-

cord,includingan11-5markintheSoutheast-ernConference.

Inadditiontohissuccessatthecollegiatelevel,Hellehasmaintaineda similar track inJuniorOlympicvolleyball,wherehehasbeenaheadcoachsince1991.WhileincollegeatNe-braska,the1994LincolnSportsCourtsVolley-ballClubteamfinishedsecondnationallyandhadthreeplayersnamedAll-America.In1995,whileanassistantatSouthCarolina,HelletookthefirstJuniorsteamfromSouthCarolinatotheJuniorOlympicNationalChampionshipinSanFrancisco.

Hellehasbeeninstrumentalinthedevel-opmentofJuniorsprogramsinSouthCarolina–havingcoachedover100athleteswhohavereceived college scholarships. He co-foundedClubSouthJuniors,whichhadover300play-ersparticipatethispastyear.

While at Wofford, Helle has also built asuccessful camp program. This summer over400 campers came for the Corey Helle Vol-leyball Camps. In addition to his camp inSpartanburg, Helle travels each summer tohighschoolsforanon-siteprogram.Overthecourseofeachyearheworkswithalmost1,000athletes.

A native of Princeton, Ill., Helle gradu-atedfromNebraskain1994withabachelor’sdegreeinhistory.Hellehasparticipatedintri-athlonsthepasttwosummersandenjoysplay-ingvolleyball,basketballandgolf.

He met his wife, the former Kim Ring,whenhemovedtoSpartanburgandtheyweremarried in June 2002. The couple welcomedtheirfirstchildren,asetoftwins,LucasJamesand Maggie Grace, June 4, 2007. Their thirdchild,daughterAbbeyRae, joined the familyon October 3, 2008. They reside in Spartan-burgandalsohavetwodogs,BaileyandKacy.

In2009,BrookshelpedleadtheTerrierstoan18-14overallrecord,recordingthemostwinsfortheprogramsinceitstransitiontoDivisionI.Withawealthofknowledge,bothasaplayerandcoach,Brookswasinstrumentalintheteam’sfirstSouthernConferenceTournamentvictorywithanopening-roundwinagainstElonin2005.TheTerriersalsoposted

theirfirst-eversweepversusFurmanthatsameseason,herfirstonthebench.PriortocomingtoWofford,sheservedastheheadvolleyballcoachatConverseCollege,a

localDivisionIIschool,in2003and2004.Brooksisaformerfour-yearstarterasamiddleblockeratSetonHall,amemberoftheBig

East.WhilewiththePiratesin2000,shesettheschool’skillpercentagemarkandpacedtheclubinsoloandassistedblocks.Shealsofinished10thintheleagueduringthe2000and2002campaignsforhittingpercentage.Offthecourt,BrooksgarneredBigEastall-academichonorsandwasamemberoftheDean’sList.

ShehasbeenactivelycoachingintheClubSouthJuniorsprogramsinceherarrivalinSpartan-burg.In2006,shecoachedthetop15steamtotheSouthCarolinastatechampionship.HerteamqualifiedfortheJuniorOlympicnationaltournamentinMinneapolis,Minn.Shehasledteamstothenationaltournamentthepastthreeyears.

Brookshasalsoconductedandworkedseveralcollegeandhighschoolcampsthepastseveralsummers.AnativeofFortMacleod,Alberta,shecompetedwithTeamAlbertaforthreeyearsandwasamemberoftheLethbridgeVolleyballClub.

ShegraduatedfromSetonHallin2003withabachelor’sdegreeinsocialandbehavioralsciences.InMay2005,shecompletedhermaster’sdegreeineducationfromConverse.

EnteringhiseighthseasonwiththeTerriersisChadOdom.ThisseasonmarkshisfifthontheWoffordbenchasanassistantcoach.

Inhisfirstyearwiththeteam,in2003,heservedastheteam’sdirectorofoperations.Healsowasthesquad’svolunteerassistantcoachduring2004and2005.

He has been active in the Club South Juniors the past six years. He has assistedformerTerriercoachSeanFitzgeraldandtheirteamshavequalifiedfornationalsduringthreeofthesixyears.HehasalsoworkedtheCoreyHelleVolleyballAcademythepastfivesummers.

Odomgraduatedwithabachelor’sofeducationfromSouthCarolinain2001.HecurrentlyrunsOdomHardwareonAshevilleHighwayinSpartanburgandcontinuestoplayvolleyballwithlocalclubteamsintheUpstate.Heandhiswife,Lisa,liveinMoore,S.C.,andownadognamedAgnes.

TheSouthernConference,whichbegan its89thseason of intercollegiate competition in 2009, is anationalleaderinemphasizingthedevelopmentofthestudent-athleteandinhelpingtobuildlifelongleadersandrolemodels. TheSouthernConferencehasbeenontheforefrontofinnovationandoriginalityindevelopingcreativesolutions to address issues facing intercollegiateathletics. From establishing the first conferencebasketball tournament (1921), tackling the issueof freshmen eligibility (1922), developing women’schampionships (1984), to becoming the firstconferencetoinstallthethree-pointgoalinbasketball(1980), the Southern Conference has been apioneer. TheSouthernConferenceisthenation’sfifth-oldestNCAA Division I collegiate athletic association.Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley(1907),thePacific10(1915)andtheSouthwesternAthletic (1920) conferences are older in terms oforigination. Academic excellence has been a major part ofthe Southern Conference’s tradition. Hundredsof Southern Conference student-athletes havebeen recognized on ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDAAcademicAll-Americaandall-districtteams.Atotal

of19RhodesScholarshipwinnershavebeenselectedfromconferenceinstitutions. TheConferencecurrentlyconsistsof12membersinfivestatesthroughouttheSoutheastandsponsors19 varsity sports and championships that produceparticipantsforNCAADivisionIChampionships. The Southern Conference offices are located inthehistoricBeaumontMill inSpartanburg,S.C.Atextile mill that was in operation from 1880 until1999, Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 andtodayofferstheleaguefirstclassmeetingareasandofficesaswellasaspaciouslibraryforstorageoftheconference’shistoricaldocuments.

MeMbership history On Feb. 25, 1921, representatives from 14 ofthe Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s(SIAA)30membersmetatAtlanta’sPiedmontHoteltoestablishtheSouthernIntercollegiateConference.On hand at the inaugural meeting were officialsfrom Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute(Auburn), Clemson, Georgia, Georgia School ofTechnology (Georgia Tech), Kentucky, Maryland,MississippiA&M(MississippiState),NorthCarolina,NorthCarolinaState,Tennessee,Virginia,VirginiaPolytechnicInstitute(VirginiaTech)andWashington

&Lee. Dr.S.V.SanfordofGeorgiawaschosenasactingchairman and N.W. Dougherty of Tennessee wasnamedsecretary.Thedecisiontoformanewathleticconference was motivated by the desire to have aworkablenumberofconferencegamesforeachleaguemember.With30schoolsintheSIAAbytheearly1920s,itwasimpossibletoplayeveryschoolatleastonce during the regular season and many schoolswentseveralyearsbetweenplayingsomeconferencemembers.Inaddition,in1920,theSIAAvoteddownproposedrulesthatanathletemustbeinacollegeayearbeforeplayingonitsteamsandrefusedtoabolisharulepermittingathletestoplaysummerbaseballformoney. Playbeganinthefallof1921andayearlater,sixmoreschools joinedthefledgling leagueincludingTulane(whichhadattendedtheinauguralmeetingbuthadelectednottojoin),Florida,Louisiana(LSU),Mississippi, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. VMIjoinedin1925andDukewasaddedin1929. By the 1930s, membership in the SouthernConference had reached 23 schools. C.P. “Sally”Miles of Virginia Tech, president of the SouthernConference, called the annual league meeting toorder on Dec. 9, 1932 at the Farragut Hotel inKnoxville, Tenn. Georgia’s Dr. Sanford announcedthat13institutionswestandsouthoftheAppalachianMountains were reorganizing as the SoutheasternConference. Members of the new league includedAlabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Florida,Georgia,GeorgiaSchoolofTechnology,Kentucky,Louisiana,Mississippi,MississippiA&M,UniversityoftheSouth,Tennessee,TulaneandVanderbilt. ChaMpionship history ThefirstSouthernConferenceChampionshipwasthe league basketball tournament held in Atlantain 1922. The North Carolina Tar Heels won thetournament to become the first recognized leaguechampion in any sport. The Southern ConferenceTournamentremainstheoldestofitskindincollegebasketball. Commissioner Germann spearheaded theSouthernConference’sexpansiontoincludewomen’sathleticsduringthe1983-84season.Thatyear,leaguechampionshipswereheldinvolleyball,basketballandtennis. Cross country joined the mix in 1985 andtheleaguebeganholdingindoorandoutdoortrackchampionshipsin1988.Mostrecently,theconferenceinstituted golf and softball championships in the

springof1994andaddedsoccerinthefallof1994. The Southern Conference declares championsin10men’ssports-football,soccer,crosscountry,basketball,indoortrackandfield,outdoortrackandfield,wrestling,baseball,tennisandgolf-andninewomen’s sports - soccer, volleyball, cross country,basketball, indoortrackandfield,outdoortrack&field,tennis,golfandsoftball.

Wofford won the 2003 and 2007 soCon Football Championships.

WoffordalumnusandCarolinaPanthersownerJerryRichardsonmadea$1milliondonationin2008thatwasusedforenhancingtheRichardsonBuilding.Numerousimprovementsweremadeinthetwelve-yearoldfacilitytoensurethatitisoneofthemostadvancedathleticfacilitiesinthenation. EnhancementstotheRichardsonBuildingincludenewpaintandcar-petintheentirefacility.Thecoachingandadministrationsuiteshavebeenreconfiguredtoprovidebetterreceptionareas.Footballandmen’sbasketballofficesareoutfittedwithanewvideosystem,includingcomputers,editingsoftwareandlarge-screenmonitors.ThisnewsystemissimilartothosebeingusedbytheNFLandNBA. Inside the Harley Room, a new audio/video system was installed tohandlethevarietyofeventsheldintheroom.Newdisplaysforacademichonors,SouthernConferencehonorsandtheHallofFameareapartoftheproject.Additionalmuralsandphotoscomplimentthebuildingandgiveitafreshlook. In addition, the fitness facilities have been upgraded as well. At theendof the lastacademicyear, therewereapproximately 2,000 four-year colleges in the UnitedStates. Only 262 of them have the right to inducttheirgraduatesintoPhiBetaKappa,thenation’smostprestigious liberal arts honor society. There are fiveindependentPhiBetaKappacollegesanduniversitiesintheCarolinas:Wofford,Davidson,Duke,FurmanandWakeForest. PhiBetaKappahasaninterestinghistory.Foundedat the College of William and Mary in December1776,PhiBetaKappawasthefirstof theGreekletterfraternitiesandadoptedsuchritualsasthebadge,thesecretoath,andthespecialhandclaspfromthevarioussecretsocietiesoftheday. PhiBetaKappa,however,wasalsodevotedtotheprinciples of “friendship, morality, and literature (orlearning),”andthesecharacteristicsgraduallyattainedthe greatest emphasis. John Quincy Adams, EdwardEverett and Joseph Story, members of the Harvardchapter,arecreditedwithmakingthefraternityapublicliterary and honor society for undergraduates in the1830’s.WomenwerefirstadmittedtoPhiBetaKappain1875attheUniversityofVermont. OnlytwochaptersofPhiBetaKappaexistedintheSoutheastbefore1900,butgraduallythehistoricstateuniversitiesandthemostoutstandingprivatecollegesbegantosecurechapters.Theprocessofearningacharteroftentakesmanyyearsandstandardsareveryhigh.FinalapprovalcomesbyvoteofallthechaptersatthetriennialmeetingsoftheUnitedChaptersofPhiBetaKappa.AttheAugust1994triennialmeetinginSanFrancisco,53collegesanduniversitiessoughtchapters,butonlyseveninstitutionsevenqualifiedforavote. The City’s origins predate the RevolutionaryWar.SpartanburgwasnamedforaunitofAmeri-canRevolutionforcescalledthe“SpartanRifles”who helped defeat the British at the Battle ofCowpensin1781,undertheleadershipofGen-eralDanielMorgan. ThetownofSpartanburgwasincorporatedin1831andlaterasacityin1880bythe13OriginalStatesandTennessee.DuringthistimeSpartan-burgwasboomingdueinlargeparttotherapidlyexpandingtextileindustry. In the 1870s, Spartanburg became a railroad“hub city,” with mainline railroads extendingfromMagnoliaStreetdepotinalldirections,tak-ingpassengersandfreighttoCharleston,Augus-ta, Atlanta, Asheville, Charlotte and points be-yond.Asmanyas90trainsperdaycouldbeseenand heard operating in Spartanburg during thegoldenageoftheAmericanrailroad,1900-20. During the 1920s, Spartanburg built SouthCarolina’sfirstmunicipalairportandclaimedthestate’sfirstcommercialradiostation(WSPA).Itsleadershipinthestatewasreflectedbytheelec-tionofseveralresidentsasgovernor. ThousandsofU.S.soldiersboundforoverseasserviceinWorldWarsIandIItrainedatcampsinSpartanburg.ThepostheadquartersforCampWadsworth (1917-19) was located at the pres-ent site of WestGate Mall, and the Camp Croft(1940-45)waslocatedsouthofthecity.MuchofthatmilitaryreservationhasbecomeCroftState

One of the greatest successes of thiscampaign was the development of the BMWmanufacturing center near the Greenville-Spar-tanburgAirport. Spartanburg’s downtown, which always hasbeenanchoredbythecampusesofWoffordandConverseColleges,hasbeenundergoingamajorrevival since the mid-1990s. In addition to thecorporate headquarters for Denny’s, AdvanceAmerica,QS-1andseveralothercompanies,thecity has acquired a magnificant public library,theMarriottHotelatRenaissanceParkandmostrecently,theChapmanArtsCenterandtheUSCUpstate George Dean Johnson School of Busi-ness.TheareasurroundingMorganSquaregrad-uallyisredevelopingwithavarietyofinterestingrestaurantsandurbanapartment-stylehousing. Throughoutthe20thcentury,textilemanufac-turing companies formed the backbone of theSpartanburg economy. The most significant of

Study Abroad Programandawell-written,thoughtfulacademicstate-ment of purpose, the GPA requirement foreach program is an important component inthe consideration of the candidate for studyabroad.Eachprogramhasavarietyofeligibil-ityrequirementswhichcouldincludeacertainclassstanding,statusasastudentingoodaca-demicandsocialstandingwiththeCollege,aswellasspecificcoursepre-requisitesandlan-guageproficiency.TheOfficeofInternationalProgramswillworkcloselywitheachstudent

to help select an ap-propriateprogramforthe student’s needs,however, it is the stu-dent’s responsibilityto make certain thattheeligibility require-ments are met beforeapplying.

The curriculum offered to Wofford studentswhile in foreign residence is as varied as thecurriculumtowhichtheyhaveaccessatWof-ford.Studentsmayfollowcoursesofstudyinart, architecture, economics,history, and sci-ence.Atthesametime,theymayfurthertheirmajor in a chosen foreign language. Creditreceived for courses taken abroad transfersdirectlyandcompletelytoWofford.Withtheappropriate permission, credit may be ap-pliedtomajordisciplinerequirementsaswellastogeneraleducationrequirements.Gradesearnedoverseasarecomputed into thegradepointaverage.

Feesfortheprogramsofstudyabroadvaryde-pendingonthechoiceofcountryandprogramtype,butinmostcasesthebasiccostsarecom-parabletothoseofattendingWofford.Finan-cial aid assistance may be applied to foreignstudy fees.Specific informationonprogramsand costs can be found under each programrubric.Manyprogramsalsoofferfinancialaidtoqualifiedstudents.
