UMass Lowell Quick Facts

Never Rebuilding, Always Reloading

Each of the 15 veteran players on the 2010 UMass Lowell field hockey team has never ended their sea-sons anywhere short of the NCAA National Championship game. The squad will return 82% of its offense (73-89 goals), includ-ing 2009 Northeast-10 Player of the Year Sammy Macy. On top of all that, add an impressive freshman class from across the country to the mix, and you’ve got the recipe for another successful campaign from the River Hawks this fall. Others agree with that assessment, as well, as UMass Lowell was selected third in the NFHCA/Kookaburra Division II Preseason Coaches Poll and second in the Northeast-10 Preseason Coaches Poll. They’ve earned respect from fellow coaches and the time has come to live up to those expectations. “With a senior class this large [seven members], leadership is built in already,” ninth-year head coach Shan-non Hlebichuk said. “They know the expectations and they want to leave their mark on the program.” After their third heartbreaking Na-tional Title game appearance in as many years, the squad will work tirelessly to bring home the River Hawks’ second Na-tional Championship in program history and first since 2005. “After experiencing three years of National Championship defeat, if there is one class that should be hungry for a different outcome, it’s the class of 2011,” Hlebichuk said of her seven-member senior class.

2010 OUTLOOK The Offense

The River Hawks will return the vast major-ity of their offense from last season, including leading scor-ers in Macy (25 goals) and fellow senior Ka-tie Enaire (22 goals). Last season, Enaire tied the program’s record for single-game scoring after tallying nine points (4g, 1a) against Saint Anselm on Sept. 19, helping the squad to a 9-1 vic-tory. Enaire and Macy are

the team’s two returning Longstreth/NFHCA All-Americans, after four River Hawks were tabbed with the honor last year. Both were also named to the NE-10 All-Conference First Team, while Macy was also named to the NCAA Championship All-Tournament Team for her ferocious efforts in the post-season. Last year’s corps led the NE-10 with 3.71 goals per game, a stat which ranked them third in the nation. With an average of 21 shots per game, they were strides ahead of NE-10 opponents, as Stonehill ranked second with 16.64. The offensively aggressive team will look to continue its prominence among confer-ence teams and national opponents. “Our offensive expectations will be high after returning Sammy and Katie, but we also have a lot of experience and leadership on the offensive line with Lizzy Ales, as well. This year, we have no excuses not to produce offensively," said Hlebichuk." Key players such as Ales and Abby Auld will likely see significantly more playing time and have increased oppor-tunities to contribute to their team. Ales

Senior goalkeeper Amy Carbon

finished last season with 17 points and ranked fourth on the squad with eight goals. Auld, now a junior, saw action in all but three games last season, earning her first collegiate start and notching 13 points on the year (4g, 5a). This sea-son, more than ever before, will be their chance to excel.

The Defense

“I think Jaime Hadley and Liz Day are almost unsung heroes on this team. They don’t neces-sarily get recognized by the conference, but within the team, everyone knows they are two of the most important pieces of our system," said Hlebichuk. "With Jaime anchoring the defensive corps and Liz at the midfield, they have a lot of young talent surround-ing them, but they will help to hold it all together.” The team’s other two captains, alongside Macy, patrol the midfield and defensive lines, looking to not only continue their success from last season, but also fill in the gaps left by graduating All-American seniors Laura Sullivan and Ashley Smith. The seniors will be assisted by junior Annie Hansbury, a 24-game starter on the back line last season. She notched a pair of defen-sive saves last year, adding five assists, as well. Last year, the River Hawks ranked third in the conference, allowing 1.54 goals per game, and ranked atop the NE-10 in scoring margin with a 2.17 goal differential per game. They notched four shutouts on the year and let up an average of just 5.3 shots per

game to opponents, ranked second in the conference behind Stonehill. Returning goalkeeper Amy Carbon finished last season with 18 starts in 24 games, playing 1332 minutes in the cage. She earned a 1.63 goals allowed

average and amassed a 15-5 record on the year.

The New Class

A large batch of new talent entering the ranks, the River Hawks will look to incorporate their XX-member fresh-man class from the get go. “With the largest freshman class we’ve ever had, we have a lot of youth in our lineup, but this will be coun-tered and balanced by

our large senior class,” Hlebichuk said. “Since our freshman class is so geographically diverse, I

think this will bring different styles of play and elements to our team and help raise our level of competition.” Hlebichuk refers to the diversity of hometowns that include New York, Mas-sachusetts, California and Kentucky. The forward line will be beefed with the addition of dual-sport athletes Ali Ferraro and Melissa Effertz, who will also be playing softball at UMass Lowell. She will be joined up front by Rachel McCarthy and Corinne Trask. Mov-ing back to the midfield, local products Kayla MacDonald and Janelle DeCa-millis will join the line and defensive corps will be joined by Hellen Trainor and Corinne Schultz. The goalkeeper position will also be well-rounded with Melanie Hopkins and Kaitlyn McCle-nahen also vying for playing time.

After eight years as head coach at UMass Lowell, Shannon Hlebichuk has little left to accomplish after guiding the River Hawks to five straight Northeast-10 Conference Tourna-ment championships (2003-08), seven consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament and the 2005 NCAA Championship. She has compiled a sterling record of 138-42 (.767). Awards have been plenty in Hlebichuk's eight seasons for her and her players. She was named the Division II Coach of the Year by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) in 2003, 2005 and 2007; as well as the NE-10 Coach of the Year six of her eight seasons at the helm and NFHCA Division II North Coach of the Year four times. She has also guided her players to all-conference honors 39 times and All-American status 29 times - including five in both the 2004 and 2005 seasons.UMass Lowell is coming off an 18-6 year in 2009, which saw them make it to the NE-10 Tournament Semifinal and despite earning the #5 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, the

River Hawks played to the National Title Game for the third consecutive year. UMass Lowell held its south region rival Bloomsburg to a close game, but were not able to overcome the four-time consecutive National Champion Huskies, and lost 3-2. Five of Hlebichuk's student-athletes were named to the NE-10 All-Conference team, four were honored as All-Americans and junior Sammy Macy was named NE-10 Player of the Year. In 2008, UMass Lowell compiled a 20-5 season and earned its third NE-10 regular season championship in the four years, in addition to an appearance in the NE-10 Conference Tournament Championship, despite falling to Bentley in a 1-0 (OT). Despite the loss, the River Hawks earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament and they advanced to the title game before falling to Bloomsburg, 6-2. UML's finished at 19-3 in 2007 - which included both the NE-10 regular season and tournament titles - and hosted the NCAA Tournament in which they fell to then 13-time champion Bloomsburg 5-2. In 2006, the River Hawks peaked at the opportune time, winning 13 of its last 15 games en route to a fourth successive NE-10 Tournament title and bid to the NCAA semifinal. In a near perfect 2005 season, UML advanced to the NCAA Championship game and scored a 2-1 overtime victory over Bloomsburg. The River Hawks capped the year with a sterling 20-3 record, which included the NE-10 regular season title and share of the tournament championship. In the fall of 2004, Hlebichuk guided UML to a splendid 19-3 clip and spearheaded the River Hawks to their second straight NE-10 Tournament title and an encore trip to the NCAA semifinal. Along the way, UML spent all but three weeks ranked No. 1 in the NFHCA Division II poll. That season followed a special 2003 campaign in which Hlebichuk guided UML (15-8) to its first NE-10 tournament title and the NCAA Tournament championship match, where it fell to Bloomsburg, 4-1. On the eve of the 2003 NE-10 Tournament championship, Hlebichuk became the third field hockey player inducted into theUniver-sity's Athletic Hall of Fame. In her first season (2002), Hlebichuk guided the River Hawks to a 9-9 overall record (6-4 in the NE-10, sixth), as well as the team's first postseason appearance in 20 years. Outside of coaching, Hlebichuk currently serves on the NFHCA Hall of Fame Committee and was the former Northeast Region chairperson of the NCAA Division II Field Hockey Committee and the NFHCA Division II All-American Committee. She served two years on the NFHCA North-South All-Star Game Committee and was named head coach of the North Region squad in 2004 and 2005. During the summer, Hlebichuk is the direc-tor of the Northeast Field Hockey Camp at The Governor's Academy in Newbury, MA, which trains more than 150 players. Over the span of her career (1994-98), Hlebichuk amassed 33 goals and 29 assists (formerly a school record), pitting her fourth on UML's all-time scoring list. She was an integral player in helping the River Hawks to a 15-4 record in 1997, up from a 5-15 clip the year prior. A two-year captain, Hlebichuk was twice named to the NFHCA All-America team and was named the 1997-98 NCAA Woman of the Year for the state of Massachusetts. Hlebichuk's field hockey prowess carried over to the classroom as she earned a spot on the NFHCA National Academic Squad three times. She was also named a GTE Academic All-American and was co-chair of UML's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Upon graduation in 1998, Hlebichuk earned her master's degree in higher education at Arizona State in 2000. Hlebichuk and her husband Korey reside in Nashua, NH, with their daughter Liv Marie (7).

A four-year defensive starter, Mroz helped the River Hawks to the NCAA Division II Championship in 2005 and was instrumental in the program cap-turing NE-10 tournament titles in 2003, 2004 and 2005. As a senior, Mroz earned first team All-American honors by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) and was named to the NE-10 All-Conference First Team. In 2007, Mroz returned to UML to compete for the university's softball team while she obtained her degree in business administration/marketing. College, Chelsey Feole enters her first year on the UMass Lowell field hockey coaching staff.

While at BC, she was a two-year captain of the Eagles and twice named All-American (First team in 2009 and Second Team in 2008).

As a senior, the forward was named All-ACC and was named to the All-ACC Academic Team in each of her final three seasons with the Eagles. During her senior campaign, she was also named

to the ECAC Division I First Team and All-ACC Tournament Team. She left the Heights with a school record for most goals (26) and points (64) in a single season and earned the Athletic Director's Award for Academic Achievement. Aside from her accomplishments at BC, Feole was also a member of the USA Field Hockey Program and played for the U21 Junior National Field Hockey Squad in 2008 and 2009. She was also a member of the New England High Performance Team in 2008 and 2009, winning the National Championship in 2008.
